A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What Went On Behind The Scenes?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 18, 2022

I’m coming back to this story because it’s such an excellent example of nobody knowing how anything works. You can think you know but you don’t. NOBODY had Davante Adams going to the Raiders. NOBODY. In fact, nobody had him going anywhere. “They’ll just franchise tag him” everyone said.

I follow this random vegas content guy on twitter just cause I like the stuff he posts and I like to keep a watchful eye on the happenings in that quaint little town. So on March 4th he tweeted this (typical of the stuff he tweets):

This dude isn’t into sports at all and I remember reading it and thinking, “so what? Dude likes to gamble? Who knows. The Raiders aren’t getting him”. About a week later Rodgers resigned with the Packers for some absurd number—I think I read 150 mil but that’s not relevant to this thread so I’m not looking it up.

Now here’s my question: what are the odds that you would be working with someone, closely, and have no idea that they just bought a 12 million dollar home in a random city? Probably pretty low. And what are the odds that you were a football player who just randomly bought a 12 million dollar home in a town with an NFL team and you had no intention of playing for them? Then two weeks later you force a trade there?

So how did all this go down? Is Rodgers just a horrible person who took 150 mil knowing his #1 was leaving in 2 weeks and the Packers are now completely screwed? Did the Raiders somehow tamper at all here? Or was this some master plan that Adams executed all by himself? Another Paly grad I might add….

I am genuinely interested in knowing how this all went down.

First ? I would have is where was Adams living before? It sure as hell wasn’t anywhere near Green Bay. Paly guy yes and helluva basketball player too, who ditched Bay Area to play college ball at Fresno St for some unknown reason.

There’s no such thing as loyalty anymore, anywhere.
    Look no further than here…

      Except in Ukraine that is…

@xoot–I think using transfer portal to reload presents issue for most of coaches of integrating them all to each other and system/expectations of coach. For Calipari and UK, those expectations are through roof and he had 3 brand new starters who see ball lot in Tshiebwe Washington and Wheeler. Grady is grad transfer new too.
Over last 9 games they went 5-4, so questions start at top.

I re read his book last month and he admits in one losing season he could not get his guys to buy into system (and ditch hero ball) no matter what he did and that as recruits they didn’t work out like he thought they would. If he could keep this group of them together another year and build around them….but it’s unlikely and he might have to replace all 3 again. So now he might have to start over again with new set of recruits and transfers.

    Last night Wheeler had 4 boards/6 assists, but also 4 fouls/6 turnovers and missed 3 FTs/made 2.
Washington went 2-10 from floor, Given strength of inside game, he needed more from his new back court.

Contrast that with St. Mary’s with returning senior backcourt guys Kuhse and Logan Johnson, who dominated.
Or UCLA who return all 3 top scorers from last year Final Four (?), Campbell (much improved shooter) Juzang and Jaquez. In both cases top players have that familiarity with each other and coach’s expectations.

    • xoot said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:25 am

I don’t know. Wheeler and Washington last night reminded me of the start of the season; but the entire team improved a lot over time as they played together (the peak may have been the nationally televised blowout of KS, at KS). Then their play turned erratic again. Last night they had no 3 pt game, they couldn’t harass St Pete’s 3 pt shots effectively, they turned the ball over constantly, and at the FT line they really didn’t take advantage of the Peacocks’ aggressive fouling. They also looked exhausted in OT. Mid-season, they’d seemed to leave all that crap behind. (The big exception, of course, is Tshiebwe, who played well all year and last night.)

      • xoot said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:46 am

Wheeler and Washington were both out with injuries in the second half of Feb. Some sort of factor, for sure.

      • xoot said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:54 am

oh, to wrap it up by connecting to the theme of thread: a friend in Lexington tells me that Calipari recently bought a huge home in Nashville.

      • Macdog said, on March 18, 2022 at 9:13 am

I think Calipari has a summer home on the Jersey Shore, town called Lavallette.

Ralph Terry dead at age 86. Great obit in NYT, complete with pic of him being carried off field by teammates at Stick after WS ended in 1962. didn’t know he was guy that gave up dramatic WS homerun in 1960 to Mazeroski.
Baseball is on today, Giants vs. Cubs tonight 7 PM. Um, every time I see “Cubs” it hurts a bit. Man lot of doom over at Athletic where Brisbee (who quoted Baggs as saying Giants might be set with roster) has column comparing 2 starting lineups btw. SF and LA. One blogger wondered if Z is holding off adding position players til top prospects ready in year or two. hmmnn

    • Winder said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:52 am

I think Terry pitched in 3/4 games in the 62 series and just crushed us. We just couldn’t hit him.

  5. willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:52 am

cbs story per Ian Rapaport said Rodgers knew Adams wasn’t gonna accept franchise tag and wasn’t coming back. fwiw Derek Carr is Fresno St. guy too.

    • Flavor said, on March 18, 2022 at 9:42 am

Then he’s a fucking selfish idiot. GB is fucked now with him making all that cash and then having no ability to add anyone to help

      • willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 10:09 am

yeah though that’s hardly out of character. Noticed Niners had to make some adjustments with couple other players to get under cap til they can find trade partner for G.

  6. unca_chuck said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:54 am

It’s a fairly big advantage that smaller schools like Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, St Pete, etc. have players that stick around for 4 years.

  7. unca_chuck said, on March 18, 2022 at 9:13 am

As far as Adams goes, he’s had a long-running feud with the Green Bay front office over his not getting paid like the best WR that he is. Rodgers certainly knew about their issues. A-Rod wanted his money and got it. DA didn’t.

The Raiders are cray cray, but what else is new? Carr has his Bulldog buddy back.

Just wish the Niners would have gotten Chandler Jones.

  8. unca_chuck said, on March 18, 2022 at 10:27 am

That’s all well and good, A-Rod is a dick and all, but I’ll bet you the Packers go further than the Raiders in the playoffs. The Raiders problems go much further than WR.

I’m just worried how this affects our signing of Deebo. His price tag is skyrocketing with all the huge WR deals.

  9. unca_chuck said, on March 18, 2022 at 10:33 am

Willie, Adams was living in De Pere Wisconsin. His new house is next door to Derek Carr.

    • willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 11:55 am

whoa, thanks. I was gonna make a joke about him being far away from Kuiper ville.

  10. unca_chuck said, on March 18, 2022 at 10:51 am

Is Story the next guy that got away? Not a ton of power but a hell of a lot more than what we currently have.

    • Winder said, on March 18, 2022 at 11:55 am

He’s one that I would really like to real in. He can play mulitple positions and has a great bat. Craw and him along with Belt and Longo would make a very formattable infield.

    • willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 11:57 am

From what I heard he is adamant about playing SS. Though maybe x amount of $$ might make a difference. Fans at least always leery of Coors guys. Even though Arenado did fine in STL, not up to what he did previously.

      • Winder said, on March 18, 2022 at 12:42 pm

If that is the case then he is probably not a fit for the Giants.

      • willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 1:56 pm

Hey just read on MLBTR Story is open to “short term” position change. Giants in mix of 4 teams they say.

  11. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 12:34 pm

Adams was adamant that he would not play under the franchise tag the Pack put on him at 20+million.He wanted to be highest paid receiver in football which was Arizona’s Deandre Hopkins. He got his wish as the Raiders contract puts him on top at an annual salary of 28.5 million per season for 6 years.Packers screwed the pooch signing Rodgers first and thinking Adams would except the franchise tag after. Now the drama will start all over in GB when Rodgers pouts about not having a true #1 receiver again..

    Padres get Luke Voit.

The guy who made game winning FTs for Miami with3 seconds left as they edged USC 68-66 is Charlie Moore who started his career at Cal. He was on 2016-17 team coached by Cuonzo Martin, who left as his 3 best players left to go pro, including Jaelen Brown of Celts. Moore led Cal in assists then transferred out as well, going first to Kansas then DePaul (where he graduated) and finally as grad transfer to Miami. Good story, he’s studying for masters and glad things worked out for him.
    Poor Cal has never recovered.

  15. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 2:46 pm

Story is a great fit if he’s in on moving positions.I think he would give Crawford a blow as well against a tough lefty matchup, and even 3rd I believe he has better splits then Longo batting RH.Lots of flexibility added and who wouldn’t want a real good defense on the infield with Belt,Story,Crawford &Longoria. And a dayoff are DH roles they’re is ton of options on both sides of the plate!
Just hope it’s not lip service again by Giants floating a rumor there in on him. It’s seems like upper management won’t let Z/H pull the trigger as the payroll keeps going down, their like 13th in spending at 128 mil for a big market team, why won’t they add a bat?And next year even more big money goes away in Belt&Longo and a lot of the other 1 year deals

  16. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 3:18 pm

Wow crazy money Deshaun Watson to receive a 5/230 million contract fully guaranteed that’s 46 million a year!! and a 5th rd pick. (NFL record contract)

Texans get 5 draft picks 3 first rd picks one is expected to be the 13th pick in this year’s draft a 3rd rd and a 4th rd pick..

  17. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 3:25 pm

Forgot to say the team is the Cleveland Browns..
Watson could still be suspended for some games by the NFL stay tuned..
Baker Mayfield now looking for a team, could suck some for Jimmy G and the Niners making a deal on a trade??

  18. willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 3:38 pm

Story in Chron today on point guard Damari Milstead, wearing #11 for Fullerton State, #15 seed set to play Duke later today in Greenville So Carolina. Played HS ball at nearby Moreau Catholic of Hayward, spent 2 seasons at Grand Canyon of AZ, one back home at USF but lleft after getting only 15 minutes a game. He transferred to Fullerton as senior now, where he’s been second leading scorer and assist/steals leader for them. uh good luck tonight!

  19. djloo27 said, on March 18, 2022 at 3:53 pm

I’m sure as usual the Giants will be sure to offer the big FA (Story) just enough to get outbid.
In many cases, it’s proven to be just as well…

  20. djloo27 said, on March 18, 2022 at 3:59 pm

And LaStella’s freaky back loaded contract is another deterrent.
    We ain’t gettin’ Story…

  22. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 4:31 pm

Hey Loo, yeah the Giants will be in their usual smoke& mirrors move for Story so I don’t expect a signing..
But hey atleast your Chiefs came through adding another weapon for Mahomes signing Ju Ju Schuster to a 1 year 10.75 mil contract.Only played 5 games last year due to injuries, so it sounds like a prove your healthy contract.Could be a real steal, he’s only 25, can line up in the slot and his yac is one of the best in the league..

    • djloo27 said, on March 18, 2022 at 4:40 pm

      Very happy about it, Kat.
They never replaced Sammy Watkins and the rest of the division made big moves…

    • Winder said, on March 18, 2022 at 5:05 pm

Juju kind of reminds me of a young Allen Robinson. I think he could be one of the best in the league.

If you’re gonna break my chops, you can take it on the arches. Understand?

  24. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 4:41 pm

Lol for Aaron Rodgers who probably wishes he can rework his contract which IS ONLY 150 million compared to Watson’s 230 mil 80 million more deal..

  25. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 5:01 pm

Does anybody agree that the Washington Commanders and the Cleveland Guardians are the dumbest team names ever?

    • xoot said, on March 18, 2022 at 5:20 pm

the Cincy redlegs and redstockings weren’t great. Colt 45s was hilariously bad. redskins and indians? Even worse.

  27. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 6:03 pm

Oh man the Colts 45s was the bomb of all jerseys and cap for me!
And who was better then Jimmy Wynn “The Toy Cannon” wearing that classic look! He rocked it bigtime!

    • Winder said, on March 18, 2022 at 6:34 pm

I think Colt 45 was the worst tasting malt liquor I have ever had. Loved the unis though. Joe Morgan’s card was also a classic to me.

Willie, would be interested in seeing that Brisbee column comparing the starting lineups of Dogs and Giants. What was his overall take? My first thought was, other than Belt and Crawford, Giants don’t have a *starting lineup*….

    • willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 7:59 pm

Kind of yikes. Said it’s possible zero Giants are better individually. Smith Freeman Taylor T Turner J Turner Pollock Bellinger Betts with Muncy as DH.

    • willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:04 pm

As you say, lot of variables in any Giants lineup and Kap will make changes as other team brings in relievers. He did add that other than Posey, same could have been said last year.

  30. Flavor said, on March 18, 2022 at 7:05 pm

here we go gents, let’s watch some baseball. Webb on the bump

  31. xoot said, on March 18, 2022 at 7:26 pm

Logan looks good. The shiny plastic black ST hats don’t. Bring back that style Willie Mays always wears.

  32. Flavor said, on March 18, 2022 at 7:32 pm

Webb seems to be just a touch dialed in. 7 hitters, he strikes out 5. 30 pitches, 2 innings, done. We are so fortunate to have this guy fall into our lap

    • Bozo said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:36 pm

Picked at 118 in the 4th round, $600,000 signing bonus. Yep, not bad, not bad at all.

  33. alleykat69 said, on March 18, 2022 at 7:51 pm

Glad he’s just a camp arm, cause Brickhouse is heading to the outhouse soon.

  34. willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:11 pm

Paul, sure Grant Brisbee very active on Twitter as are Giants beat writers like John Shea Susan Slusser Andrew Baggersly (sp) etc. They often re post columns from each other.

  35. djloo27 said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:15 pm

Posey’s game calling and leadership are irreplaceable for now.
    But 18/56/.304 doesn’t have to be…

  36. paul sorensen said, on March 18, 2022 at 8:29 pm

Thanks for that little recap, Willie. Sure, a straight-up comparison probably would reveal that “it’s possible zero Giants are better individually. Smith Freeman Taylor T Turner J Turner Pollock Bellinger Betts with Muncy as DH.” That’s because THAT is a starting lineup. Don’t really know how you compare Giants to that, it’s nearly apples and oranges in a way.

    • willedav said, on March 18, 2022 at 9:12 pm

Yeah exactly. giants position players ranked really high in NL last year everywhere except LF and 2b. Yaz tailed off, but combo of Slater Wade Jr. Ruf and Duggar did fine collectively in OF. Kap made it work with what he had, no small accomplishment.

Flav. re Rogers.. No matter how many trophy’s he wins, I will always be a huge fan of TB!2! Why?

He is the ONLY star athlete who has repeatedly reduced his own salary to let his team sign other guys. I read somewhere 10+ times he has reworked his own deal to free up money for his team.

To be clear..For the elite players…1st big contract? Max out. But once you have 100+ million the next contract could and should be less. Kobe Bryant is held up as a guy who was all about winning, but demanded to be highest player in NBA at the end, and his reward is his last 2 years Lakers sucked ass. Rogers did it now. Curry too if I want to be fair. Dubs are against the cap. Why Stephs max deal number 2. Countless examples of elite players doing this. Why? Once you have made 100 to 200 million make some money sure, but max out? No reason.
Isn’t it better to make a little less and be a contender vs not? Is pro sports fun on a bad team? If your 2nd deal is $100 million on a good team vs 140 million on a bad team wouldn’t that suck?

Of course fans all agree on this, but TB 12 is the only one who actually does it…

    • Flavor said, on March 19, 2022 at 5:34 am

Manning used to do it all the time, too

    • unca_chuck said, on March 19, 2022 at 7:47 am

Plenty of players have done that. Steve Young springs to mind. It’s just that none have lasted near as long.
