A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Farhan’s Holes

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 21, 2022

Still doing a slow burn about Farhan. You know, he says he’s in on all these top tier free agents and yet he never snags any of them. What does that tell you about him? Bargain hunting is fine and he’s excellent at it. But it’s not unreasonable to think we overachieved last season and by losing Gausman, Posey and Bryant and that we are in for a huge let down this year.

Signing FAs to long term deals (something Sabes was rightfully trashed for) isn’t something normally supported here and other than Suzuki I don’t think there were good choices out there. Bryant got stupid money, and with opt outs Correa deal could be a one off where he bolts and that doesn’t seem like a Z thing either. No to DHs guys like Castellanos Schwarber Soler or Nelson Cruz for me. I can live with Ruf and Flores plus Pederson.

Could he have done more to improve team? We’ll see but I am glad he solidified pitching. Having a strong bullpen is getting more and more important and 3 headed back end with Doval McGee and Rogers is great.

As for guys they lost, Posey is not replaceable and C seems to have good prospects in system beyond Bart. Bryant Solano and Dickerson had to go anyway for one reason or another. 2022 will be critical season to follow top prospects trying to move up from one level to another. I think that’s where Z’s focus is, looking to future a year from now to see who can do what and how close they are to ML.

      Wilmer is the forgotten Giant.

      • willedav said, on March 21, 2022 at 8:41 am

I love watching Flores hit and with DH he’ll get more ABs and won’t have to be replaced in field so often.

Once Posey decided to hang it up I stated I was expecting this will be an evaluation year which I am fine with so I expected a regression. But then why sign Rodon and coming off surgery Boyd??? Thought those signings meant a likely a big right-handed bat was coming…wrong…

You really think he would be that surprised if this team doesn’t perform nearly as well as last year’s? If he’d found his inner Bill Walsh, and endured the complaints about not extending Craw and to a lesser degree, Belt, he could’ve signed Correa and Freeman. That would have been impressive. And seeing Belt as a Dodger would have been amusing.

Bryant? Farhan’s plan hasn’t changed despite the unreasonable success last year. The plan was to phase out the big contracts and bring up the young guys. Well, the bore core got a little more rope. Signing more older guys isn’t gonna wildly change our fortunes.

And our big acquisition Austin Dean was DFAed for Matthew Boyd.

Willie, I disagree with signing Pederson over Cruz, with the NL going DH full time I would have preferred that middle of the order power from the right side, but that’s just me. If Zaidi’s plan is to mix the young guys with the old ones than I’m onboard with that strategy. But I’m against it if he ends up doing his waiver wire dance that ends up taking playing time away from the homegrown players. If he doesn’t trust the kids in our own system, then trade em.
BTW, I think Bart is going to be solid behind the dish and at the plate.

    • willedav said, on March 21, 2022 at 9:11 am

Oh yeah another RH bat would have been great. Brisbee said so in Athletic today. Maybe Ramos becomes next Wade Jr another guy that totally surprised.

    • James said, on March 21, 2022 at 9:13 am

At the plate, Cruz might be a marginal upgrade over what they have in Ruf/Flores and Pederson. All 3 of those guys can rotate onto the field when needed, unlike Cruz.

Not youngsters exactly, Duggar and Slater are from the system, and they really tried to make a go of Dubon. Bart will be in the line up and Ramos should get his chance, although his only promising numbers right now are 21.

All good points and I do have to remind myself that Zaidi has made some good trades while in SF. So, if the team starts looking more like an 87 win team as opposed to 107, hopefully he’ll be wheeling and dealing.
I know this is a big if, but if Belt can stay healthy, I think he could have a monster year.

    • Winder said, on March 21, 2022 at 9:29 am

I agree, if our minor league players don’t show good progress as time goes by we should just trade em. I would always be looking out for exceptional talent. Young players that show potential get a longer pass but even that only goes so far.

I’m not too bothered with Z passing on those free agent bats. The Freeman signing apparently has made this an issue, but since the gap between the Giants’ and Dodgers’ lineups already was ridiculously huge even before they got Freeman that signing one of those free agents to try and narrow it probably wouldn’t have made that much of a difference. And I don’t want the Giants saddled with another Longo-type contract. I know it’s a lot to count on another big year from Craw and Belt, but I’m okay with that. The most glaring issue to me is replacing Posey. Let’s hope Bart is ready to roll.

Well back to posts not appearing after replying. I just raised the issue if this was going to be an a valuation year with Bart Ramos and others and not signing a significant bat then why sign Rodon and a injury recovering Boyd???

    • unca_chuck said, on March 21, 2022 at 10:49 am

Because good pitching beats good hitting.

    • willedav said, on March 21, 2022 at 11:00 am

and they do need to cover 192 innings Gausman worked last year.

Unc, just read on cbs site report is Lynch telling teams he has offer of 2 x second round picks for G. not that it matters but who?

      • unca_chuck said, on March 21, 2022 at 11:48 am

I’d think Indy but could be the Saints.

  7. Giant Head said, on March 21, 2022 at 10:18 am

    Evaluation year

  8. alleykat69 said, on March 21, 2022 at 12:07 pm

It’s not going to be the Colts Chuck.
Colts just acquired Matt Ryan for a 3rd rd pick..

At this rate Jimmy G might be coming back to Niners😵‍💫
I still have him going to either Saints are Panthers, but shit Mayfield is still out there as well..

  9. Winder said, on March 21, 2022 at 12:29 pm

    So is Mariota.

  10. unca_chuck said, on March 21, 2022 at 12:54 pm

Jesus. Saints re-sign Winston, Falcons get Mariota, and Lynch is left holding his dick as the entire league switches out their QBs.

  11. unca_chuck said, on March 21, 2022 at 1:12 pm

Houston and Carolina seem to be our only hope.

    • Bozo said, on March 21, 2022 at 2:12 pm

Some folks I know here in NC have been talking him up from the get go.

    • willedav said, on March 21, 2022 at 2:54 pm

thought Panthers don’t have second or third round pick.

      • willedav said, on March 21, 2022 at 2:58 pm

per Eric Branch in Chron and twitter

      • Bozo said, on March 21, 2022 at 3:06 pm

Not sure, I haven’t really followed the Panthers, just some neighbors thinking Jimmy would be a good fit. Not sure what the team thinks.

  12. Flavor said, on March 21, 2022 at 4:21 pm

I still think it is gonna be Pitt. Why the fuck they signed Trubinski I’ll never know. But having Jimmy there with Trubby as a back up makes a lot of sense

  13. alleykat69 said, on March 21, 2022 at 4:40 pm

No I think the Steelers are going to draft. QB Malik Willis and just use Trubuttwipe for this season like the Niners did with Lance. Then like you say BF Who Knows?
One thing for certain is true I’ve never seen this much QB movement in one off-season
but it figures it would be Jimmy G left out by all the teams due to his injury history, interceptions in the clutch,etc..

    • Winder said, on March 21, 2022 at 6:27 pm

They can still draft him and have him learn behind Jimmy.

The Giants game is on the Giants’ TV channel tonight.

Bozo, agree about Belt. Now that Posey the defacto captain is gone, I think BB could step up and have one of the best years of his career, and the team will sure need that. Health of course being the wildcard. Two other keys (well, there are many…): 1) Has Yazz conquered his twitchiness against lefties after the HBP last year? They need him too. And 2), Will Doval be the effective closer it seems everyone assumes, especially after his last-appearance loss in the NLDS? Those 2 need to have their heads on straight. No reason to think they won’t, just something to watch.

  17. zumiee said, on March 21, 2022 at 7:52 pm

Tonight’s game is pretty uneventful so far. I actually started looking forward to the in-game interviews, and that’s just crazy-talk.

    • willedav said, on March 21, 2022 at 8:33 pm

Fun to watch though, despite fact Giants got no hit for 4 innings and Hader blew them away. Wood looked good too.
