Way WAY Under the Radar Moves
In all the *excitement* of Farhan’s moves, I missed that we designated Austin Dean so that Matt Boyd could be added to the 40 man roster.
I also read we were finalists in the Trevor Story chase. If true, I guess that’s a good thing. But that also just magnifies Farhan’s inability to score a big FA signing.
We have all the $ in the world, if we misfire in a FA it’s not a big deal.
I’m tired of nothing but Brebbia Aisle pick ups.
Ah this is how Z Kap et al are gonna roll so time to let things play out. In less than 3 weeks, Xoot will represent at Opener. Gotta admit, I rarely if ever watch ST except for Bridge series vs. A’s, but it was fun to watch few innings I did last night and catch Flemming and Krukow. Couple games on MLB net today (yanks-Jays and LA later) and tomorrow and Giants should be on by weekend.
Kap started 2 x LH OF last night, with Slater joining Wade Jr. and GD at top of lineup and he left them in to face Hader in 4th inning, without any success.
GD/Slater combo in CF last year hit 20 HRs, and posted above average .750 ish OPS. For GD it was tale of two halves–first half OPS of .845, second half .636. Hit better at home too, .834 OPS vs. .708 on road.
hmmnn. Kevin Pillar signs minor league deal with….Dodgers. $2.5 mil if he makes team.
I seriously doubt the Giants were finalist at all with Story.
He still wants to play SS but he might only have to wait 1 year for Bogearts to move on, while Crawford’s has 2 years on this contract, and Crawford’s never going to play another position, unlike Story now, plus the money talks,as no way the Giants dish out the years are money that Story got..
Yeah, the length of the contract was probably enough to shut Z down.
I agree it would not have been that big a deal to sign, e.g., Kris Bryant, to an overpriced long term contract. But it cuts both ways. While it’s not like he was useless last year, even when he disappointed, he wouldn’t make the difference between a good or a mediocre team in 2022, either, with a great season.
Because I’m James!
I think it’s to Z’s credit Giants have not overspent on pitching, instead identifying quality arms in rotation and pen and working out shorter term deals. I liked Gausman, but 5 yrs/$120 is a lot to gamble on, and though I love the guy, Bum contract with AZ is a bad one. Look back on how many times they spent a lot of $$ on pitching that didn’t go well, going back to end of Cain Lincecum Smardz Cueto and few others.
IIRC, they were close to giving Tim 4/80, which was considered huge then, but chose instead to give Matt the big bucks for which they got one outstanding year and a title (2012). The rest of his contract was a disgrace, but I could never have hard feelings towards any of the guys (even Zito) who in my mind accomplished the unfathomable over 5 years…
They went from torturing us for decades to spoiling us I guess…
Giants sign Darin Ruf to a 2/6.25 with an opt for a 3rd year.
Solid signing by Z the way Ruf mashes LH pitching through out his career with the Giants..
“Look back on how many times they spent a lot of $$ on pitching that didn’t go well, going back to end of Cain Lincecum Smardz Cueto and few others.”
Sabean was giving those contracts based partly on “inning eating” just at the time when the new GMs didn’t consider “inning eating” a thing, and those younger GMs were more than happy to bullpen a game at a moment’s notice.
To his great credit, Sabean was on the cutting edge of the new philosophy of giving quality relievers generous contracts. That proved to be pivotal for the Giants’ 3-in-5.
I think Affeldt was one of the greatest weapons we ever had.
There’s a difference between spending big $$$ on bullpen guys because you stumbled on some good relievers and placing value on and consciously increasing bullpen innings because they make your staff more effective overall.
So we agree that long contracts rarely work out. Longish contracts on elite hitters usually do. And yet we have none. Of the bore core, only Belt gives me any confidence of a repeat. Is Wade jr going to be a pinch hitting machine or did league figure him out? Our line up had 2 very good hitters and that takes pressure off the lesser guys. Losing Posey and Bryant is going to hurt. Not sure we have the talent to replace those guys on the roster. We needed a good / solid / experienced outfielder. There were plenty available and we got none. GRR
Guitarist George Benson is 79 today. Born in Pittsburgh PA, child prodigy played on soul jazz organ LPs then broke out later on CTI label in early 70s. I had few of those (and he was on those by other artists like Stanley Turrentine and Freddie Hubbard), very enjoyable, and saw him live few times too in SF, at time when he wasn’t singing too much.
Klay Thompson with 15 points in 3 quarters and no headband, all for it. As a friend said, it’s one thing if you are Slick Watts. Otherwise, no.
Or Wilt…
Acceptable, yes.
Geez what a screw up finish by Warriors starting with Klay’s dumb foul with less than a 1sec on a 3 pt no chance making it that cost them 3 points they never recovered from..
Slush has nice column in Chron and on Twitter on Ramos. He lost weight in off season and wants to be CF. Hitting coach Viel said he’s made adjustments to swing too. Hope this works and he can contribute at ML level, soon.
That’s good news.
He looked like Zion Williamson last time I saw him…
Slush column said he got into cardio and is 15-20 pounds lighter.
15-20 join 21 as exciting Heliot numbers.
Can someone explain to me how the hell Jose Pagan finished 11th in the MVP voting in 1962?
https://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_1962.shtml#NL_MVP_voting
Easy. Same morons that voted Maury Wills (WAR 6) the MVP over Willie Mays (WAR 10.5), Frank Robinson (WAR 8.7), and Hank Aaron (WAR 8.5) were also responsible for Pagan’s 11th place finish. MVP voting was a travesty that year.
Or Ken Hubbs winning NL ROY with a 0.0 WAR.
That is weird. He was pretty much an automatic out. Great fielder though.
Warriors have been awful closing games these last few weeks. Flat terrible. 2 days ago, same thing. Late foul on a missed free throw ended it.
That MVP list from Loo shows difference in 2 leagues. 5 of top 6 guys in NL were Af Am, only 2 of top 10 in AL. Factor in top 20, and btw AfAm and Latin ballplayers, 12 (of 22) in NL, only 5 of 24 in AL. Amazing time to grow up here and have HOF come to town on regular basis.
yuck ghost runner on 2b rule coming back and rosters expanded to 28 for month of April per story on MLBTR.
Wonder if that gives Dubon a shot if LaStella not ready to go, or if Ramos could avoid Sac after ST.
The ability to finish well in NBA games is so crucial, of course. The Kings’ record is terrible, but they were in a number of those lost games until the final two minutes. Fox has been in the league several years now, and he’s still sketchy at the end of games, including missing crucial free throws.
I know the Warriors are injured but these last 20 games they’ve blown leads in just about all the losses.
Klay’s fuckup was pretty big. Then again Kuminga fouled a 3 point shooter late as well.
