A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

A LOT Going On

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 13, 2022

Lots of wild, unusual stuff from last night’s win. We saw Darvish get completely lit up by a team that previously couldn’t light up a Christmas tree. We saw a shocking accusation of racism lead to the first woman ever getting to coach on the field. And we saw the Padres get their panties bunched up about *unwritten rules* without question the dumbest of all the rules (mostly because they aren’t rules at all).

After the dust settled we saw what we usually see when we face the Padres: them being face down, ass up.

Cobb with the 10k’s in 5 innings, too. Very nice.

Cobb looked good, so did Beede for that matter. Bats broke out and hitters with .100 BA can chill a bit.
didn’t like the bunt nor what Kap or Dubon said about it. Give credit to Melvin for putting Myers in there knowing Dubon was due up 3rd that inning. Dunno what his 3b coach had going on with Giants dugout or Richardson.

I can only imagine Huff besides himself kicking the TV after Alyssa went to coach 1st base…. Giants, a step ahead of all MLB.

  3. alleykat69 said, on April 13, 2022 at 8:35 am

I heard it was 3rd base coach Mike Schidt ( Ex Cards manager) who yelled towards Antone Richardson and the Giants dugout :You better control this motherfucker! And after Richardson said What did u say? The ump tossed him saying he was the instigator.(supposedly Kap didn’t hear the racist remark and Melvin&Schidt had no comment after the game)Kinda like in football , the second guy who throws a punch gets the heave.

Maybe I’m not in tune with this new BS etiquette code, but I think both Dubon who is a total dumbshit with a snail 🐌 for a brain bunting up 11-2 in the 7th is a fucking joke. Then theirs Kapler in the dugout knowing Melvin&Williams are watching when Dubon comes off the field, Kap gives the I’m ripping a new one to Dubon in front of the camera’s when he’s actually praising him for being aggressive in the moment in the postgame show?? And when Kapler mentioned, we’ll if we’re losing big, I have know problem with a team bunting are stealing on us late.Huh? That’s a stupid comment that your players shouldn’t agree about imo..

Missed the entirety of the game and just watched the highlights and just saw the female coach coming in part of the story not knowing the background until Flav’s post.

So now reading about the Duggar stolen base which obviously is what prompted the ire of the Padres third base coach who should have been the one tossed immediately but don’t find that him calling someone a motherfucker a racist thing. If our first base coach was white I think their coach still calls him a motherfucker.

I know some here will disagree and believe the old school is well too old school and the way the game has always been played should disappear. I completely disagree. Why do you not steel and bunt for a base hit with a big lead???? Because of the old school rules that when you do that then one of your guys is taking one in the ribs. What if the Padres decided to throw at a young guy like Bart or oft injured Belt and injured him??? Foolhardy by Kapler to praise playing full throttle. Even though even with a team like the Flodgers who I live humiliating, you don’t break the “rules” because you are asking for retaliation and Kapler should know better. Now that the pitchers don’t hit they won’t have any hesitancy to hit batters because they won’t have to stick their ass in the box.

    • Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 9:33 am

there’s no one to retaliate towards. The players are doing what their manager is telling them to do. I came from the Will Clark era but I’ve always disagreed with the unwritten rule that you’re supposed to stop trying once you get a big lead. That’s bullshit. I’ve gotten in more than a few shouting matches with opposing players (baseball and then softball) because I played by the motto of “you play hard, I play hard.” If someone wants to let me know they’re giving up and waving the white flag, ok I’m fine with just “running out the clock.” But this bullshit that you’ve got a big lead and the other team gets to keep trying but you have to stop, man, fuck that.
Also GH it wasn’t calling him a mother fucker that was the racist thing. Come on, you really didn’t see why that was racist??????

      • Giant Head said, on April 13, 2022 at 1:08 pm

Think he would have called that to a white coach as well

      • Giant Head said, on April 13, 2022 at 1:14 pm

But I agree wholeheartedly that our couch could have felt it was intentionally racist and their coach should have been the only one tossed. But I really don’t think in today’s world in a professional sport a coach with black and Latinos players throughout their team would be that racially hateful.

      • Giant Head said, on April 13, 2022 at 1:09 pm

Shouting match one thing but in baseball did one of your teammates get an intentional beaning?

  5. Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 9:37 am

now, whether Schilt meant it as racist or it was just a “micro agression” we’ll never know. But I totally see where Richardson perceived it as racist in the moment. Either way, looks like they’ve talked it out. This is this morning…..

  6. snarkk said, on April 13, 2022 at 10:00 am

I’ve never been into all these stupid unwritten rules. No bat flips, etc. If somebody purposefully throws at you for some reason, sure, I’m up for a retaliation if it’s not to the head. But, this stuff about “showing up” the other team is utter crap, and always has been. Does the other team, if it’s way behind, not employ their defensive “shifts”? Play the game hard, all the time. Did Bill Walsh, in the second half, stop beating the crap out of the other team because the first half clobbering was enough? No…

    • Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 10:04 am

this is correct. That’s why “you play hard, I play hard” is impossible to shoot down if you’re on the opposing team and getting beaten but you’re still trying to come back and win the game.

      • Winder said, on April 13, 2022 at 10:51 am

That’s why I have always hated the prevent defense in football, you are basically giving up half the field. Love that the Giants hammered the Pads yesterday

  7. Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 10:06 am

it’s tough to tell if Richardson accepted Shildt’s words. His body language suggests he didn’t. Micro aggressions are real though and whether Shildt meant it or not that’s how it was perceived and that’s all that matters.

    • snarkk said, on April 13, 2022 at 10:26 am

Assuming it went down as Richardson says, I can understand his taking offense as being the target of racist behavior. Why does Shildt get to yell to Kapler to “control that MFer!”, when Shildt is giving as well as getting in the heated conversation with Richardson? Demand that someone be “controlled” is definitely a racially loaded word in such a situation, or so I’m learning / reading, as a white dude. Then, the ump just gave Richardson the black dude the quick heave ho as the “instigator”, no questions asked. Maybe Melvin needs to get his coaches under “control”. In all, a bad look for baseball, as usual. If the Padres throw at somebody today for last night, when no Padre was threatened by anything except their poor wittle egos for getting trounced, that will be utter BS…

  8. knight2king1 said, on April 13, 2022 at 10:38 am

Been years since I checked out the comments on this blog, which I find to be a curious ether of toxic human aggression and banal computer generated commentary. For my benefit only or to my detriment, here’s why this game was an evolutionary leap forward, and like the “Tauchman Catch Game” against the Dodgers, will give the Giants an edge on a division rival:
    1) The Giants offense came to life.
    2) The rivalry with the Padres has always lacked passion, they’re like Canada to the Dodgers Russia.
    3) Duggar, Dubon, even Yaz and Flores are in a pitched battle of musical chairs. They have every right to execute any play if it helps them win a spot on the pending 26 man roster. Fuck the Padres feelings with a fungo.
    4) Even in a blow out, behind or ahead, the Giants should always do things that will help them win the next game. Wear down the opponents bullpen, expose a weakness in their defense, rest key players, get them frustrated and angry.
    5) A Padre coach insulted Antoan Richardson in a borderline racist way, which ironically, resulted in having the first woman in history on the field to coach first base.
    6) It’s entirely possible, Kapler told Dubon to bunt. It would be a perfect way to send a message to Shildt and the Padres coaching staff, that what they did is inexcusable. Even if he didn’t, it enabled him to unify and inspire his team in the post-game press conference. It was masterful.
    7) The unwritten rules are horseshit. They’re not even about sportsmanship, they’re about ego, and harken back to a game played before Jackie Robinson broke the Color Barrier. Rather than break actual rules against intentionally throwing at a batter, let the Padres try to get a nine run lead. They can then steal and bunt to their hearts content.
    8) This particular unwritten rule should only go into effect if a team has a 13 run lead, because 12 run leads have been overcome several times before. What a terrible message the Padres coaches sent to their team, if you’re down 9 runs, you have no chance of winning. They should have brought Myers in to pitch in the 2nd inning if they felt that way.
    9) Logan Webb is just the man for the job today. He won’t let the Padres gain any traction in the aftermath of this kerfuffle. He’ll shut them down, and hopefully won’t have to drill a batter in retaliation.
    10) 6th game of a 162. It’s on, and there’s nothing better than playoffs in April.

Since it’s been years since you’ve been here, maybe you can enlighten us all about your Cicada-rhythmed post — is it “toxic human aggression” or “banal computer generated commentary”. Personally, I see elements of both …

      • knight2king1 said, on April 13, 2022 at 11:06 am

It’s both. That’s how it works these days. For example, before the 2016 Election, flesh and blood Russian agents operating in St Petersburg, would post anti-Clinton stuff on social media, then the comment threads would be inundated with computer generated “opinions”.
The last time I posted here, within moments, presumably a human, informed the blog that an entity, formally know as “Twinfan” had passed. Then the thread was flooded with tributes, all within a few minutes. That’s not how it works in “real time” Without using the internet, don’t have the resources or inclination to ascertain anyone’s humanity.
I predict we’ll see a few old-timey avatars resurrected today.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 13, 2022 at 11:55 am

lol, Knight2KingIdiot that is a wild imagination you have. Take your conspiracy bullshit elsewhere.

  10. zumiee said, on April 13, 2022 at 11:34 am

There are some “unwritten” rules that I don’t agree with; but I don’t agree with bunting for a hit while ahead by 9 or 10 runs or whatever it was. Everyone that’s coached appreciates it when you’re WAY down in the score if the other team will kind of “call off the dogs.” It’s just a courtesy to a fellow coach. Coaching is very hard work and stressful, and the coaches should adhere to some kind of code of courtesy. In my opinion, Kap comes off looking off on this one. And kind of feeds into the narrative about him before he arrived to the Giants, that he kind of misses some concepts. I’m still a big Kap fan; I just don’t agree with him on this.

    • Winder said, on April 13, 2022 at 11:55 am

I feel that coaching is more like gambling and SOME gamblers will do just about anything they thing think they can get away with. It’s just human nature. It should be open season on any team especially division rivals. They have the same opportunities we do.

    • willedav said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:29 pm

Agree Zum, and that’s the same expression (call off the dogs) coaching mentor used. Larger issue is respect for the game itself, bigger than Kap and players etc. Right and wrong way (not just one way) to play the game imo.

You think bunting for a base hit with a 9 run lead is playing hard? That’s fucking laughable. Take your hacks, meat.

It just shines a light on Dubon’s lack of baseball IQ more than anything else.

I kinda thought the steal in the 2nd was a bit unwarranted, but it WAS the 2nd inning.

But all it does is piss off the Padres. Like we are rubbing their noses in shit.

    • Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 11:58 am

Trying to score runs is playing hard. Don’t fucking fucking talk down to me Chuck.

  13. Bozo said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:01 pm

If you are going by LaRussa’s unwritten rules, then Shildt shouldn’t have gone to the Giants dugout.
I don’t understand why Kapler didn’t hear the remark if he was there to defuse the situation. The dude should have been in Shildt’s face the minute he came to their dugout and started jawing.
MLB need to fine the umps for not 86ing Shildt.
Every ballplayer should realize that Duggar and Dubon are not only playing to win, but also to stay on the team. Every guy out there would try and bump up their stats if they were in that situation.
Can the Pads really complain, yet bring out Myers to throw BP pitches? Unless the Giants were not supposed to swing away at those lobbed pitches.
How is tacking on an unwritten rule these days anyway? With bandbox stadiums and juiced baseballs, is any lead safe anymore?

  14. Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:05 pm

    agree with all of this

  15. knight2king1 said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:18 pm

Speaking of bots, they’re all over baseball tweets. Because his “success” is measured by abstract stats like FIP and WAR, not wins, the face of AI commenters is deGrom. It’s always enlightening to argue about who is better, him or Kershaw. They’re the same age and one of them is arguably the greatest starter of all time, the other is an often injured, back-luck pitcher with ungodly stuff.
Kershaw e has or had a perfect game going when I started this post, deGrom is on the IL.

kershaw was in the middle of a perfect game, 13ks and he’s only thrown 80 pitches and he just got yanked. What the fuck are we doing here?

    • unca_chuck said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:29 pm

There’s your passing of another unwritten baseball rule. Roberts is saving his pitcher for the season.

      • Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:43 pm

80 pitches. He was fine. And all this did was further the pussification of this game.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:56 pm

Kershaw is injured seemingly every season. I get why Roberst is reluctant to push him this early. Beyond that, the pitch count bullshit has been going on for the past 20 years. There are tons of unwritten rules. Don’t bunt with a big lead late. Don’t steal with a big lead late. Don’t take out a pitcher during a perfect game.

  17. Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:26 pm

  18. unca_chuck said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:27 pm

Kapler made a show of acting like he was dressing down Dubon for the bunt when he got back to the dugout because he KNEW Melvin was watching him from the other dugout. Then he reverts to this?

I guess when the beanballs start flying today it’ll all make sense.

  19. unca_chuck said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:28 pm

If anything at least it makes this game more interesting. Nothing like a little fuel to a division rivalry.

  20. snarkk said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:45 pm

I liked Dusty’s old rule that he said as a Giant manager, when I think he was accused of not backing up his players enough with retaliatory bean balls or some S like that. He’s used it several times over the years, too. It was something like: “We don’t start nothin’, but we won’t just take nothin’ either…

  21. Flavor said, on April 13, 2022 at 12:51 pm

Robert’s is such a doofus and I’m glad he’s the Bums doofus.Opie’s working a masterful PERFECT GAME with 13K’s on only 80 pitches and its not like Kershaw will have that many chances at 34 to have that on his HOF resume. If I’m a veteran like Kershaw I would tell him to stick it im finishing this game I’m way under the normal pitch count at less then 12 pitches an inning.

  24. willedav said, on April 13, 2022 at 1:34 pm

Giants went 11-8 vs. SD last season, 10-9 vs. LA. Giants split 4 game series with Pads in September and at that point led 7-6. Ended season taking 2 of 3 twice from them as they fought to hold off LA as Pads were being eliminated.

    • Winder said, on April 13, 2022 at 2:42 pm

I had thought we played them better than 11-8, so they played us pretty tough last year.

  25. alleykat69 said, on April 13, 2022 at 1:41 pm

Williams should get every start at 3rd over Mr.Ed against lefties, just for his glove work and strong arm over a rag arm Wilmer.I’m ok with Flores on the occasional spot start at 1st for Belt like today against a tough lefty, but Williams is the far superior fielder making heads up plays not errors for now..

Would MadBum have agreed to leave with a perfect game in progress at 80 pitches in and 6 outs left? Hell no. Bochy let Timmy heave 144 or so pitches to get that no hitter in Diego. It was wonderful to have that finish out, and with the Buster hug. Watching good ball used to be lots of fun. Now, it’s all or nothing HRs and Ks and no steals and frozen rope line outs to a beer league guy standing in the middle of right field in back of the 2nd sacker and in front of the RFer…

    Here’s Opie’s reaction:

“Those are individual things. Those are selfish goals. We’re trying to win. That’s really all we’re here for,” Kershaw, who had an arm injury last season, told reporters after the game. “As much as I would’ve wanted to do it, I’ve thrown 75 pitches in a sim game on six innings, let alone seven. Slater 0-4 with 3 Ks , now 1-13 on season and hitting .077..
