Winning Without Hitting

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 21, 2022

Despite Yaz, Ruf, Slater, Crawford, Estrada, Grave Duggar and Bart all hitting under .221 we are still managing to cobble together wins.

Some how the A’s, who gave up before the season started, are also winning. Speaking of the A’s, this is what it looked like at the Mausoleum yesterday at first pitch:

I strongly support their fans and the boycott they are engaged in.

What a joke if a franchise and the hat fan base…

MLB.com lists 2700 at game. One before that I think had 3700. Owner needs to sell; lot of noise about continuing lawsuits to nullify or delay new stadium fantasy plan, and owners unlikely to approve Vegas move either.

Giants have done well vs. two of Mets’ three starters, but they’ve been shut down by the relievers, which is the opposite of how the Mets’ pitching has gone this season. They better hit today since DeSclafani hasn’t looked too sharp in his first two starts.

  4. willedav said, on April 21, 2022 at 8:20 am

Getaway day ahead of 3 with Nats, projected to be NL East doormat. So far they have hit fewest bombs in NL (7) and are batting .229 as a team. ERA also among NL worst. Giants also get Nats at home following weekend.

who’s the guy with the ball? Jackson?

      • alleykat69 said, on April 21, 2022 at 9:19 am

Yes that’s Phil Jackson about to score.I recognize Jerry West&Gail Goodrich also maybe Bill Bridges?

      • willedav said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:30 am

Yeah he was odd looking with longer hair and stache, gangly. Mostly a bruiser off bench who didn’t score much.
Great shot of Clyde and Logo.

      • djloo27 said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:35 am

Jackson made a bunch of clutch FTs in that PS, especially vs. Celts..

    • willedav said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:36 am

That’s Jim McMillan near FT line and I think Leroy Ellis going after Jackson’s shot.

  7. djloo27 said, on April 21, 2022 at 8:39 am

This is Giants 15th season without Bonds and 20th without Kent…

Ha those shoes are what I played HS ball in, white high top Chuck Taylor converse like Wilt has. Celts had classic look low black with white socks. Think that is Sixers sixth man Billy Cunningham trying to get shot off over Russell, lol.

Duggar comes out after a swing, looks like oblique.

  10. djloo27 said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:37 am

And down goes the Grave Duggar.
Hernandez already has him on the DL for 8 weeks with oblique…

    • willedav said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:38 am

Then Dubon costs him a K trying to bunt with 2 strikes.
      Away with this guy pls.

  11. Macdog said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:38 am

Dubon takes the AB, tries to bunt with 2 strikes and misses, Mets announcer thinks Dubon didn’t know the count.

    • djloo27 said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:40 am

Dubon’s a moron, but you would think one of our 26 coaches might’ve said something…

  12. xoot said, on April 21, 2022 at 10:46 am

Maybe the a’s are trying to show everyone what Oakland would be like without its last pro franchise. Maybe they’re packing up. Owners spent a lot of time working together during the offseason lockout. They decided to welcome the a’s back to receive revenue sharing. They’ve said that La’s Vega’s is a viable alternative to Oklnd. Who knows.

I litigated EIRs a few times, and I rode many engines and cabooses on the double mainline that bifurcates Jack London Square. (Also, one of the EIRs I litigated concerned Calif. High Speed Rail.) The Howard Terminal EIR proposes to build one ped/bike bridge over the RR tracks. EIR also shows that experts analyzed RR traffic 12 hrs per day for a week in July, and documented many crossing blockages up and down the line, including one freight train stopped dead for 1 1/2 hours. It happens. Trains headed to or from the W Oak yard can be two miles long. You do not want thousands of frustrated, half-drunk baseball fans trying to climb over, between, or under freight cars that can start moving again at any moment.

So I think only one pedestrian bridge over the long stretch of JLS RR tracks is absurd. No wonder UPRR and the Capitol Corridor passenger train agency have sued. Maybe they’ll settle and add another bridge to the design. The a’s and the city sure as hell need to deal with those trains.

With the Corpse out and heading for the DL probably, let’s get both Ramos, and that kid we got from the White Sox’s Luis Gonzalez who’s got 3 bombs and ops over .800 team needs a spark..

  14. willedav said, on April 21, 2022 at 11:02 am

Loo, didn’t realize how well Jackson played in series vs. Celts for 73 Champ Knicks. He scored 70 points, 10 a game, high man off bench (better than Lucas or Meminger) and almost as many as Willis Reed. any team that beat Celts in those day was cool with me.

The Celts roster then did include power forward Paul Silas, McClymonds Oakland guy and on bench were Paul Westphal and Hambone Williams, one of best nicknames of all time.

    • djloo27 said, on April 21, 2022 at 12:45 pm

Knick bench was awesome that series…

  15. James said, on April 21, 2022 at 11:07 am

Disco has a pretty good chance to be out of the rotation by the end of the year.

  16. alleykat69 said, on April 21, 2022 at 11:20 am

I would say Disco needs to go to the pen, but who’s the replacement Long,Beede who sucks and can’t throw strikes Hejelle who’s getting knocked around in Sac meh 😒

    • James said, on April 21, 2022 at 11:37 am

He won’t be any good in the pen either without a fastball in the mid90s. I don’t know if the gun in NY is “slow” or it’s the weather, but Disco and Webb did not throw hard enough to be effective this series.

  17. willedav said, on April 21, 2022 at 11:48 am

Slusser (in Chron per twitter) talked to McGee, who complained about new ball. She said “pitchers on both teams have described the ball as feeling hard and slick all week.” Also McGee described them as cue balls and that “it’s not going to go where you want it to go.”
Maybe lack of grip is what has caused velo for these guys to be off. McGee also said you don’t want to overthrow it.

  18. alleykat69 said, on April 21, 2022 at 11:59 am

Grip? Slick ball? Doesn’t seem to effect Carrasco who’s retired the last 15 Giants in a row..

  19. djloo27 said, on April 21, 2022 at 12:03 pm

I’m ready to say goodbye forever to the Grave Duggar.
This team needs a Brett Butler/Kenny Lofton type.
    Or the 2010 Andres Torres…

yes. It is time to say goodbye forever. But with respect.

one thing cannot be argued: Grave Duggar contributed much more that Davis ever did. Glad he’s gone, worthless.

  27. djloo27 said, on April 21, 2022 at 12:40 pm

Grave Duggar made some nice contributions from time to time, but his ABs drive me absolutely insane…

    • Flavor said, on April 21, 2022 at 1:08 pm

Grave duggar was mostly about his HOF fame nickname anyway. He had his moments tho, unlike Davis

  28. snarkk said, on April 21, 2022 at 12:42 pm

Since Farhan is in DFA mode, add Beede to the list for April 30 roster decision, or sooner.
Dude is thick headed. He can’t even think to cover first or cover home on a wild pitch.
Let some other team finally discover his talent that’s never arrived and never will…

  29. snarkk said, on April 21, 2022 at 12:58 pm

Mets pitching is good, but even given that, Giants hitting so far this season is pretty pathetic.
After Dubon got out dumbly trying to bunt with 2 strikes, SF hit like they wanted to make sure to arrive DC early to make their hooker appointments.
SF so far is in bottom 3rd or half of most offensive categories.
Looks like another season of HRs and not a lot else…

    • Flavor said, on April 21, 2022 at 1:06 pm

Lose buster and Bryant plus have guys like yaz and ruf regress to their means and this is what you get. It isn’t surprising

      • snarkk said, on April 21, 2022 at 1:14 pm

I’m ready to see Ramos and any of these minor league OFers come up and get a real shot. Time to see if their hype is just that, or is justified. So far, and it’s early, what I’m seeing makes my 90 Ws prediction look optimistic…

  30. mrsprtdude said, on April 21, 2022 at 2:02 pm

    Time for Conforto???

  31. James said, on April 21, 2022 at 2:03 pm

The vets off to slow starts haven’t regressed to a mean — they are far below it. None of these guys is going to finish with an OPS below 600 and are pretty unlikely to be south of 700, either. That’s not to say this line up is going to score like last year’s, but the idea that we are now seeing what’s in store all season long is off base.

“Looks like another season of HRs and not a lot else…” The Giants were 5th in doubles, 6th in triples and second in total hits last year. That factors in the lamest hitting pitching staff in the league.

  32. zumiee said, on April 21, 2022 at 2:28 pm

NBA refs are pretty good at what they do, I think. I have a much more positive vibe about NBA refs than I do MLB umps.
And the NBA refs have to put up with so much griping from the players. Just about every drive to the basket ends with shooter or defender outraged at the refs. How the NBA refs are able to not get fed up with it is amazing. I’m assuming they are paid well, because the players are so tiresome with their constant whining.
The constant griping of the players to the refs hinders my enjoyment of watching the NBA playoffs. That, and the millions of 3-point shots.
Having said all that, it’s remarkable (or maybe not) how well the Warriors have disrupted their opponent in the first two games. Jokic was reduced to barking at the refs, like Cousins, and getting tossed from game 2.

  33. willedav said, on April 21, 2022 at 2:39 pm

mm it would be great if Giants could find a Lofton type somewhere in the system. Someone with a little pop, lot of speed on bases and OF and an above average hitter. Best options right now are in High A ball and won’t be here for 2 years or so. Agree it would be great to see Ramos get an extended run/non platoon mode. just dunno if Kap is up for it.

Bottom line, anyone with enough skill to be D 1 basketball player just doesn’t gravitate to baseball or favor it as their #1 sport any more.

  34. zumiee said, on April 21, 2022 at 2:40 pm

I’m really impressed with Jordan Poole. I didn’t know much about him. He’s turned out to be a great draft pick for the Warriors. Well done by the Warriors’ front office.
He was picked in the 2019 draft. Few really good players and a bunch of stiffs got drafted ahead of him.

The A’s playing the Orioles…..I’m sure the combined team payrolls of those two teams is hilariously ridiculous.

  37. mrsprtdude said, on April 21, 2022 at 3:15 pm

    Zumiee for fun I looked
    #1 Dodgers $288M
#13 SF $153M ( 13th ). !4th is Texas and that is the divider of league average. Lame we are so low!

    29th A’s $ 53 M
    #30 Baltimore $45M

Bauer and David Price tied at 11th highest salary at $32M
So Dodgers getting ZERO out of $64 M. Just sick. Cleveland, Pirates, Baltimore, Oak all getting less than those 2 combined!
