A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Back in…..First Place!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 27, 2022

I’m not sure if I could hate those red Giants uniforms more. I’m not posting a pic because you know what they look like and not posting a pic is one less time I have to look at them. Everything MLB does is for money and yet I’ve never seen a single person walking around with one of those on. Who’s buying them?

There was a hilarious tweet someone sent out about those uni’s last year I wish I could find it. It went something like: “those new Giant uniforms look like if a minor league team bus broke down in a Disney movie” –it was something like that only much funnier.

First place, yeah baby. Hey, it’s early, but who the fuck cares. Keep on rollin’!

Red unis? You mean orange? Regardless, I am sure you are talking about the City Select or whatever the fuck they’re called. I own a few jerseys but would not rock one of these.

Nice to put a thumping on our cross-bay rivals. I am not an A’s hater, but I do like to see us kick their asses when we play. Let’s get the sweep!

fun fact: Mookie Betts and Thairo Estrada lead baseball in pct of times scoring when reaching base (61%) per Fabian Ardaya, Dogs beat writer, noting that Betts has .347 OB but leads everyone with 16 runs scored.

Did they have the matching helmet last season?
    I don’t remember it.
It doesn’t help much, but I think they play about .800 ball when they wear them…

    • chipower9 said, on April 27, 2022 at 8:12 am

Loo – I am pretty sure the matching helmets are new this year. As much as I am not a huge fan of the unis, they do have a great record when donning that laundry.

    • Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 8:45 am

Yeah, I think the helmets are new. Nothing about these unis appeals to me, but whatever. As long as they keep winning I couldn’t care less.

Speaking of “hilarious”, thanks to Flav for last line of yesterday’s opening thread, “And now…”
Saw that film of sketches (redone, not originals) at SJS in early 70s, and I was hooked on Flying Circus.

There’s a Brit mystery show on PBS called “Death in Paradise” set in fictional Caribbean island with great small cast of local (and French background) police force led by bumbling Brit Inspector, with great music (J Cliff Desmond Dekker etc.). In one episode from 7-8 years ago a man leading a birder tour expedition into jungle is killed while supposedly sneaking off from group to get photo for himself of rare indigenous parrots.
at end of show, local outfitter for the tour admits it’s a scam, and that the bird died off and no longer exists.
At which point he and police guy he’s drinking with trade off dead parrot one liner jokes.
    “It’s pining for the fjords.”
    “It’s an ex parrot.”

C conundrum. Despite Giants at 2nd for most runs per game in NL and tied for first in HRs, not getting much out of C spot for offense.
Looked up Casali splits from last season. Hit much better (.771 OPS) in 100 ABs at home than on road, and fared better vs. RHP than LHP by considerable margin too.
2 good months, June and July, during which he went 22-67 with 4 bombs and in both months OPS was over 1.000. Other 4 months, best OPS was .640.

    This season 4-23 with 11 Ks/2 doubles.
Bart is 5-38 and has 23 Ks in 46 PAs.
Casali probably isn’t going anywhere, but Bart’s inability to make contact has to have coaching staff concerned, no? And as was asked yesterday, what is alternative? Ricardo Genoves is hitting .217 with .671 OPS at Sac, with 2 HRs and 18Ks in 46 ABs.

Another “bullpen” game tonight. Long slated to open (he started the game in Milwaukee on the 25th). Bullpen has been lights-out.

Amazing the team has scratched-out the second best record in the majors while missing three starting position players and two starting pitchers, and just finishing an 11 game road trip. Definitely speaks to the depth of the team’s roster. Z and Harris have done a great job.

  7. Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 8:49 am

Bart looks completely lost at the plate. I’m not sure how much longer they can keep trotting him out there. For me, nothing has changed. I have very little confidence in his long term prospects as a major league hitter.

Ruf ain’t much better. I suspect that when Wade returns, Ruf will head to the bench for a while.

    • chipower9 said, on April 27, 2022 at 8:58 am

Belt has always been streaky. For his glove alone, he will continue to get the lion’s share of starts at 1B. And I do not share your concerns about his bat. He always seems to heat-up and produce in clutch moments. Last year was his best:

      .274, .378 (great OB), .597, .975 with 29 bombs.

This year he is off to a pretty good start:

      .258, .387, .500, .887 with 4 bombs in 16 games.

Again, he is streaky as fuck. He should be in the LU almost daily, IMO. There isn’t a better option, esp. on D, IMO.

      • Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 9:17 am

I have no issues whatsoever with Belt. He’s as good as they have right now and his defense alone is stellar. You may have misread that I was referencing Joey Bart.

      • chipower9 said, on April 27, 2022 at 9:39 am

DOH! Yes I did, LJ. Sorry about that. I agree with you re: Bart. Not sure he is ever going to be a solid ML hitter. But, from what I have read, the pitching staff loves him and how he calls a game. Hoping his stick starts to come around.

    • James said, on April 27, 2022 at 9:10 am

Agree on Bart, but Ruf should recover, especially once his time is more limited to platoon DH duty when Wade returns. He looks like he is in one of those stretches where the occasional hard hit ball is at someone, every guess at a breaking pitch is the one fastball to hit in the AB, and every pitch two inches off the plate gets called a strike. It’s still very early, and 3-4 good games will make the numbers look respectable in a hurry.

      • Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 9:15 am

Yes, I expect Ruf to get it together eventually, but right now he’s a black hole. I think some time out of the lineup would help him. He seems to be pressing, but at least he has a history of producing.

  8. Giant Head said, on April 27, 2022 at 9:40 am

Awful stupid uniforms. I would once call them gay but guess that is frowned upon now…

  9. Flavor said, on April 27, 2022 at 9:48 am

hoping to get anything from Casilla as a long term starter is stupid. He’s a part time player at best. Asking him to catch more than he does would torpedo the minimal production he usually gives us.

  10. Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 9:56 am

Maybe Patrick Bailey will pan out. After a slow start last year, he really started to come on at the plate and he’s supposed to be pretty polished defensively.

  11. Winder said, on April 27, 2022 at 10:01 am

I guess I am the only one that likes the orange unis, hope that doesn’t make me gay.

    • Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 10:14 am

Nah, they’re not all that bad, but they’re going from arguably the best uniforms in MLB to those ice cream suits. Kind of jarring. The caps aren’t absolutely horrible but nothing I’d ever buy and I’m a bona fide cap junkie. lol I’ll buy a lot of different iterations, but not these!

    • chipower9 said, on April 27, 2022 at 11:18 am

They’re not horrible IMO, but certainly not my favorite. Other teams have some pretty horrendous ones that make ours look pretty good.

  12. unca_chuck said, on April 27, 2022 at 10:10 am

The Nats ones are pretty cool. The White Sox ones are the best.

    • Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 10:16 am

Yeah, the Nats ones were pretty good. Just looked at the ChiSox unis and they do look good. I like the Southside on the jersey.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 27, 2022 at 10:57 am

Both my parents are southsiders. Of course my grandfather and dad were Cubs fans. Just to be different I guess. They didn’t like the AL.

  13. willedav said, on April 27, 2022 at 10:30 am

Flav is right, Casali as a hitter is probably a lost cause.
But he’s only supposed to be the back up that plays once every third game or so, not the main man.
Bailey is 6-39 with 2 bombs so far at High A Eugene where they haven’t played much due to cold weather.
He’s 22 years old, year younger than Genoves.

    • willedav said, on April 27, 2022 at 11:53 am

they are the same age. Genoves is 2 weeks older, both born May 1999.

  14. alleykat69 said, on April 27, 2022 at 10:44 am

I’m pretty sure it’s going to be Jakob Junis starting tonight over Long..
He gave them 5 strong innings of shutout ball last time else, so hope Kap lets him go pretty far instead of his own unwritten rule of having 8 pitchers pitch an opener…Pulling Long after one inning last time out was ridiculous on 19 pitches..

    • chipower9 said, on April 27, 2022 at 11:23 am

Heard Kap say on a recent postgame about how they will play games, and that their decisions will be dictated by past success. The bullpen games have been pretty successful, so I doubt they stray too far from what they did on the 25th. Long is shown as the starter on MLB in the preview.

  15. James said, on April 27, 2022 at 11:29 am

Casali’s career OPS is 711. He finished at 663 last year, the league average for catchers was 698. I’d take 400 ABs of 663 this year, in the absence of a better solution. Bart doesn’t look like he’s even capable of those kind of numbers.

    • xoot said, on April 27, 2022 at 2:49 pm

Bart’s current OPS, in the middle of a slump, is .646. If he pulls out of it, he’ll beat .663. And if he begins throwing overhand to 2B again, he’ll gun down runners. But he’s failed before . . . .

      • James said, on April 27, 2022 at 3:16 pm

Yeah, I looked up his current stats and still didn’t bother to qualify my assertion. Belt has looked equally horrible for 30-40 ABs, but he had history to tell you it probably wasn’t a permanent decline. Bart does at least have minor league numbers that indicate he shouldn’t be this much of a mess . . . .

  16. Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 12:26 pm

I’ve been impressed with Long’s stuff so far. Three legit major league pitches and a smooth, compact delivery. His heater really seems to get on the hitters. I think he ends up being a solid starter at some point, if not even more than that. I like him.

    • chipower9 said, on April 27, 2022 at 12:29 pm

Great story, too. Local kid (from Sacramento). Until signed by the Giants, he had considered giving-up on baseball, but decided to give it one more shot. I too think he is a valuable piece to the team, either as a starter or in long relief.

  17. zumiee said, on April 27, 2022 at 1:15 pm

I know a married couple who bought the Giants City Connect jerseys and caps. The wife doesn’t follow baseball, but she liked the jerseys because she thinks they’re cute. There’s a certain market out there for the City Connect jerseys.
I could do without them, but, man, it can’t be denied they sure win a lot when they’re wearing them. I’m not superstitious at all, but I would say that certainly the Giants players have to be feeling a good vibe now when they’re wearing them. And baseball players are possibly the most superstitious of athletes.

  18. alleykat69 said, on April 27, 2022 at 2:19 pm

They would of been better off with a cool Alcatraz Prisoner design then these horrific orange glacier Gatorade look that doesn’t even include a full jersey number on the back, that’s just half assed done, complete garbage look..
And to think they want a laughable $400 plus for these hideous garments that anybody with a sane mind would avoid.. Who did they get ahold of to design this? Barnum&Bailey Circus 🤡

  19. Lurker John said, on April 27, 2022 at 2:23 pm

Clearly there’s a market, just check the stands during the games. They’re everywhere. I think they’re fugly myself, but I agree, as long as they keep winning while wearing them I couldn’t care less about how they look. Somewhat reminiscent of the “Orange Friday” thing from a few years ago when they wore the orange-billed caps and orange jerseys. Seems like they won a good percentage of those games, though I’ve no data to back that up. Don’t know if that’s held up through the current season.

Right now, I’ll take 13-5 any year. lol

  23. zumiee said, on April 27, 2022 at 3:18 pm

Speaking of noise, it sounded to me like the Nats stadium was pumping in some artificial crowd noise during those games, like was done during the height of the pandemic. I wonder if any teams are doing that still. If any are, it’s a pretty cheesy thing to do.

Very rare to have a shark attack while you’re in the water column with them. Attacks on humans almost always while the human is at the surface or in shallow water near or in the beach area…

Probably right. I have two game day Giants jerseys (authentic), one Posey in road gray, the other Lincecum in the home cream. They were $230 each 12-13 years ago. Can’t imagine they’ve gotten any cheaper in the ensuing years.

After a long surfing trip to Maui ten years ago, my younger son was stoked. We drove down to Santa Cruz every chance we got. Then one good, southswell summer day on the east side, just beyond the lineup, a great white hit a yellow kayak. Small fishing boat took the kayak to Capitola; local expert id’d the huge teeth left in the fiberglass. We didn’t know what had happened until we watched the evening news. My kid lost much of his enthusiasm then. Back in the day, we didn’t even know when such events occurred.

That was after 1976 season, losing one under Rigney as mgr. and Spec richardson as GM and then Altobelli took over and they still lost. Attendance both years was worst in NL and Giants almost moved a year earlier when Stoneham tried to sell them to Labatt’s, and Bob Lurie put together new ownership group.

Bart is a black hole from the right side as well. I’d rather have Ramos up hitting lefties and righties than the Ruf-suck going on.

They were Galapagos sharks, and we were about 3 miles out in water about 450′ deep. It was pretty trippy. The weirdest part was the absolute blueness of the water. Pretty heavy chop as well. No markers, no reef, no bottom, nothing to see. but the sharks, the occasional tuna, and a curious barracuda. There were 7 sharks milling around. The dive master said that the occasional Tiger shark will swim by but that they aren’t a problem either.

When the boat stopped, 3 sharks were immediately on the boat right at the surface. It was a little unnerving getting in, but the guide said they are mainly curious and won’t do anything. She said don’t try to touch them, and don’t go under them. Hard to do with only a snorkel, but there you go. I could have touched one of them, as they were pretty close at times, but I resisted. Another weird thing was, when I got out of the water, I felt something in my ear, and when I stuck my finger in, a tiny crab ran onto my finger. One of the other guys with us pulled a crab out of his ear as well. It was like the size of a sesame seed.

Beautiful ass sharks tho. It was very cool. It was $150 for 2 hours.
