A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Rivalry

After the Nats torched our pitching staff I must admit I am not headed into the series with LA with much confidence at all. At least we have Rondon going tonight.

Rodon has been great. Behind him, um…struggling guys and opener(s).
DeSclafani hasn’t been good and is hurt.
Webb admits he isn’t right either after giving up 11 hits in 6 innings.
Wood has an ERA of 4.19
Cobb was awful in first start back. Yes Vosler miscue hurt, but he walked 2 bottom order guys after that and balked in a run.

Wood and Cobb fastballs have looked good. Health is still the key to strong pitching this year.

Looks like it’s gonna be a long year.

Too many struggling starters for my taste!
Time to use Jakob Junis in a starting role, he’s been light outs( all he does is throw up ZEROS)and is wasted as a long man coming out of the pen.He can easily go as long as the other starters in pitch counts, innings. What’s Kapler’s excuse for not starting him?

If nothing else we should see some team resolve playing LA. They seem to bring out the best in us.

I posted this at the end of yesterday’s thread, regarding youth interest (or lack of it) in baseball:
All the youth baseball these days is organized leagues. Kids aren’t playing pick-up baseball games anymore. And a lot gets lost because of that. Looking back, I marvel at how well we got along in those pick-up games. If there was a dispute on a play, we didn’t need an adult there to resolve it; we peacefully solved it ourselves, usually with a “do-over,” which was fine. The batter never minded a “do-over.” It meant getting to hit again. We learned to resolve things. It was part of the maturing process.
And, of course, nowadays, school yards are locked when school is out for the summer, and to have pick-up games kids would have to climb a fence and literally trespass.

i watch little league games sometimes near my house. The quality is pathetic. Nearly every kid out there would be the worst player on my LL team when I was a kid

      • djloo27 said, on May 3, 2022 at 12:55 pm

I was thinking the same thing the other day in the big park near where I live.
I was walking around (there’s like 8 diamonds) and stopping to watch a little of each game.
        These kids are mostly horrendous.
        No fundamentals – no skills…

when I was 10/11/12/13 etc right around then…after a big rain we’d walk over to Stanford Stadium and play mud football on their field. No lock on the stadium, we’d just walk right in. LOL, we would tear that field up. Nobody cared. Later that week John Elway would be on the same field dominating and we’d be in the stands.
      Man, different time indeed.

      • Winder said, on May 3, 2022 at 1:04 pm

Stanford campus had a lot to offer with the amphitheater, the baseball diamond, Lake Lagunita. As kids we made the campus some of our stomping grounds and we were never asked to leave.

We played in a huge field behind my house. Used whatever the hell we could scrounge for bases. Played daylight to sunset on weekends and during summer break. And you’re right, Zume, we never had an issue sorting shit out…it just all worked, beautifully. Such a simple time…I miss those days. Being trying to put together a pick-up wiffle ball game with friends.

On a visit to Berkeley one day, in the late 1990s, I was walking around on the Cal Berkeley campus and I walked right into the football stadium and onto the football field, and walked around on the field for a while. The public was totally allowed to do that in the pre-9/11 years.

  8. zumiee said, on May 3, 2022 at 2:46 pm

In the late 1990s, on a long visit to Seattle, I spent part of a day walking around the Univ. of Washington campus. I walked right into the university sports arena, and stood relatively near the sideline for a while watching the women’s volleyball team having their practice, and nobody there could have cared less.

  9. willedav said, on May 3, 2022 at 3:07 pm

NBA games at Oakland used to be able to walk from one side of arena to the other to get to your seats, and stand under the basket (where all the photogs are now) and watch them warmup before game started. Man that was so cool.

  10. willedav said, on May 3, 2022 at 3:15 pm

Someone in Chron today complained about how poorly NBA games are reffed and that fouls are constantly ignored. what? Calling more fouls would slow game down even more than all the commercials timeouts and reviews already do. Plus it’s incredibly hard game to officiate anyway, due to speed and skill level of best players in the world, who oh btw are very big men.

SanDog and Flav and Zum are very tall men—and would be shorter than half of NBA players if not more.

Pumped about Dubs and Gigantes tonight!!!

  12. James said, on May 3, 2022 at 3:51 pm

If little league is now more about keeping the kids busy, the skills of the high school age players who’ve made some commitment to the game seem far beyond when I played. It’s kinda like the educational system at large. While I know they’re on their way out, etc., what constitutes a 90th percentile SAT score nowadays would have been 99th back in the 70s.

And the starting line-up for YOUR San Francisco Rivercats!

    1. Austin Slater (R) RF
    2. Mauricio Dubon (R) CF
    3. Darin Ruf (R) 1B
    4. Wilmer Flores (R) DH
    5. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    6. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
    7. Kevin Padlo (R) 3B
    8. Luke Williams (R) LF

  14. djloo27 said, on May 3, 2022 at 5:18 pm

    Better question: Who’s on 3rd?

      • willedav said, on May 3, 2022 at 5:53 pm

thanks Loo. He hit 3 HRs in a game Sunday after coming over to Giants. river cats lost 16-8 as Sean Hjelle got raked for 11 hits and 7 runs in 4 innings. Game was played in Albuquerque, another hitter friendly park at 5000 ft elevation.

  15. willedav said, on May 3, 2022 at 5:57 pm

Helluva exciting start to NY Rangers-Penguins opening playoff game, 3-3 after 2 periods .Beauty of a short handed goal off face off in their own end, and then give up tying goal down 2 men.

    • djloo27 said, on May 3, 2022 at 6:04 pm

      Insane game…

  16. willedav said, on May 3, 2022 at 6:05 pm

Slush says Pederson available off bench tonight, and Yaz and Wade Jr. could be back tomorrow.

  17. Macdog said, on May 3, 2022 at 6:09 pm

Mets-Braves nightcap was a throwback, took 2:18, Mets starter Carrasco went 8 IP, Braves starter Wright 7 IP.

    • djloo27 said, on May 3, 2022 at 6:17 pm

Pretty sure I saw Vogie beat the Mets in under 2 hours at CF a few years ago.
Felt like I just sat down and then left…

      • Macdog said, on May 3, 2022 at 6:30 pm

Yeah, don’t know what year but I remember that one.

  18. Macdog said, on May 3, 2022 at 6:37 pm

    Oh man, no goal.

  19. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 7:36 pm

One of the Flapaloozas was Tim Hudson game that was over in less than 2 hours. The ONE time I wanted a game to go 3.

This Dubs game is nuts. Payton is out. Draymond gets stitches on a siot to the face and no foul.

  20. Macdog said, on May 3, 2022 at 7:44 pm

    Maddening inning by Rodon.

  21. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 7:47 pm

Fucking Ja gets the James Harden brush foul treatment

    • Macdog said, on May 3, 2022 at 7:48 pm

      Yep.

  22. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 7:54 pm

My daughter is at this game. Hopefully she brings us the win, but it doesn’t look good. Urias is tough.

  23. James said, on May 3, 2022 at 7:55 pm

Shoulda used Rodon to close out the Nationals and taken your chances with Cobb tonight.

  24. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 8:10 pm

Ja took 6 steps on that double team. Nope, nothing to see there!!

    • James said, on May 3, 2022 at 8:13 pm

That is really a much bigger difference than the three point shot. The travel to the hoop. And it is infinitely more disgusting to watch.

  25. alleykat69 said, on May 3, 2022 at 8:51 pm

Lord I was born a traveling man
Took 4 steps cause I knew I can

  26. alleykat69 said, on May 3, 2022 at 8:56 pm

And the Penguins 🐧 in 3OT’s beat the Rangers 4-3 in just an incredible game!
Tough loss for Loo I assume..

  27. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:07 pm

    this is absolutely fucking ridiculous.

  28. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:08 pm

Dray didn’t touch or do anything to Ja and they call a foul on a fucking rebound.

    Fuck this

  29. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:09 pm

    This is an absolute joke.

  30. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:28 pm

The refs might as well home town this shit all the way through the playoffs. I’d like to see Ja get 3 quick fouls called on him in the 1st quarter.

But he doesn’t play defense so it’ll be a stretch.

  31. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:35 pm

Be nice to see Slater running but why put pressure on the defense?

    • Macdog said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:38 pm

Especially on a night when balls are dying on the warning track.

  32. mrsprtdude said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:53 pm

Initial report says Payton has a fractured elbow. Shit.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 10:16 pm

Goddamn it. Sure looked like they were targeting his ass. We should have JTA take out Ja’s knees.

  33. mrsprtdude said, on May 3, 2022 at 9:55 pm

Tough lose. Took without looking it up I would say the worst 3 point shooting night the Warriors have ever had and Morant scoring 47 for Dubs to lose a road game.

  34. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 10:09 pm

Fuck Crabman. Got to get one win tonight

  35. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2022 at 10:17 pm

    Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft.

Rodon had one weird inning and that’s all it took.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 3, 2022 at 10:47 pm

As Chi said earlier, that looked like a Rivercats lineup, against LA no less. Rodon has been lights out and his start was effective, but yeah, that lineup was just not good enough to overcome even one bad inning.
