A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Win As Many As You Can

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 11, 2022

With the Dodgers probably starting another 12 game win streak yesterday it’s important to win games like last nights. Although it should be pretty easy making the post season this year even if they run away with it. I’m not conceding the division…..but come on. Look at that team. And ours is significantly weaker than last year’s.

But that does mean I don’t think we can make a lot of noise this year. Let Z make another deadline deal or two and we’re good.

Finding different way to win from last season.
Despite slump, SF still 2nd in league for runs per game.
Last year they were 6th in doubles 5th triples #1 in HRs.
This year 14th doubles 12th triples 5th HRs.
Last year 3rd OB #1 in slugging and OPS
This year 4th OB 7th slugging 6th OPS
Tied for tops NL for fewest HRs allowed.

Nothing against Luis Gonzalez at all except for couple screw ups in OF, one on windy day when he overran fly ball in LF corner.
Looks fine at plate, gets on base, just not much pop. 2 doubles 1 HR in 52 ABs.
Kinda what has happened lately to Yaz. He has raised BA from .231 to .282, but it’s almost all singles–1 double and 1 HR in last 30+ ABs. Maybe it’s ball/humidor just different from his power years of 2019/20.
Rox sure played some sloppy baseball last couple days.

Re catcher one would think Contreras from the Cubs will be available trade deadline. I don’t deal Bart though for him.

    • Giant Head said, on May 11, 2022 at 7:45 am

And Contreras a free agent next year so seems certain he will be traded or at least available by the trade deadline. And being a forthcoming free agent, should not require high end prospects to land him.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 11, 2022 at 7:56 am

Trade for Contreras and send Bart down? If it comes to that, then why keep Bart? It would show that the team has no faith in him.

This is from a Brisbee article in the Athletic.

The San Francisco Giants have scored 4.79 runs per game through Monday night. This is down slightly from last year and 2020, and you can feel the difference. It’s not a huge drop, but it’s enough to get the brain whirring. Is it the dead ball? Is it that the Giants’ hitters are more susceptible to the dead ball than other hitters? Is it age? Is it an inability to manufacture runs? An over-reliance on home runs? These questions aren’t unreasonable.

Before you burden yourself with them, however, there’s context to explore. More than almost every other sport, baseball is about following a single team and not an entire league, so while you’re up on everything that’s happening in Giants Land, you might not be as caught up on what’s happening throughout the entire league. You’ve heard about the dead ball, and you might be aware that offensive numbers are down everywhere, you might not know just how bad it is.

It’s bad. Only three teams in baseball have scored more runs per game than the Giants. The average National League team is hitting .235, with a .312 on-base percentage and a .376 slugging percentage. In 1968, a season that was so friendly to pitchers that they raised the mound the next year, NL position players hit .251/.310/.355.

It’s 1968 again, just with a handful of extra home runs. Unless something changes — and you know Major League Baseball likes tinkering with the baseball — this will be the kind of season that baseball fans remember indefinitely.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2022 at 8:34 am

Outstanding post Winder . . . What is insightful from Brisbee is two-fold: 1. The Giants have company for their hitting “doldrums,” although they are actually in the top 4 hitting NL teams statistically; and, 2. This is bad for baseball fandom and MLB – despite all the tinkering with rules, including adding a DH to increase hitting in the National League, they have FAILED miserably to increase ACTION in MLB.

Consequently, the snooze factor has increased, right? I have no answers, except maybe they ought to at least go back to the rules prior to 1968, especially roster size and how many pitchers are allowed on each roster (no more than 9 imo). In effect, the game wasn’t boring in the 1960s. Today’s game is. Just a thought . . .

      • Winder said, on May 11, 2022 at 8:46 am

I don’t know what can be done either. It seems that all pitching is so specialized now and just about everyone can throw in the mid-nineties. The only thing i can think of is moving the fences in, maybe quite a bit. But then what’s fair for the record books? Personally i enjoy a good pitched game if I am at the park but on TV it is kinda boring.

    • blade3colorado said, on May 11, 2022 at 8:56 am

“Personally i enjoy a good pitched game if I am at the park but on TV it is kinda boring.”

Same here . . . However, with one caveat, a complete or near complete game a la Gibson, Koufax, Marichal, Drysdale, etc. Sheesh, even pitchers like Cain, Timmy, Kershaw, I will take. Not these 5 inning wonders.

  5. Bozo said, on May 11, 2022 at 8:27 am

I’m curious about the term “dead ball”. My assumption was that not using a juiced ball meant MLB would go back to using a ball with the pre-juiced specs, is that not the case?

  6. willedav said, on May 11, 2022 at 8:50 am

Baggs had write up on Bart’s failings at plate today, in lieu of Casali going 3-3 last night. Lot of telling stats about how bad he is when behind in count and how he’s missing pitches in middle of zone. Baggs brought up Kap hitting for him the other night in 6th and wondered if C rotation might shift to 60/40 Casali.

    • Winder said, on May 11, 2022 at 9:16 am

Yes, I think that Bart is going to be much more scrutinized in the near future. I feel bad for the kid but I feel worse for the organization. Mistakes are made all the time and there still maybe time for him to correct his plate woes. But I think time is running out.

  7. willedav said, on May 11, 2022 at 9:00 am

9 runs on 8 singles 4 doubles 5 walks 0 HRs and some help from Rox D last night.
should be sunnier/warmer day overall plus 12:45 start.

  8. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2022 at 9:56 am

One thing for sure there’s no dead ball are no dead bats when it comes to hitting off of Jake McGee..
He hasn’t had a scoreless inning since facing the A’s on April 27th.
Since then in 4 relief appearances 3 earned runs,3 earned runs,3 earned runs,
1 earned run!!(ERA stands at 9.68 and that’s after it went down .18 after only giving up 1 run last night lol) Dude is out of whack and should atleast go on the 10 day DL with a fake injury, instead of thoughts of shipping Gonzalez out their best hitter right now, make a more sensible move first..

  9. Unca Chuck said, on May 11, 2022 at 10:14 am

This is Bart’s make or break year. That being said, if he doesn’t start hitting the ball hard, they will send him down, if only to get his confidence up and relieve some of the pressure on him.

No matter what anyone is saying, the onus to fill Buster’s cleats is a large amount of shit to deal with.

He’s 25 and reaching the point of diminishing returns. If this season continues to be a struggle, they may just go ahead and give him a change of venue at the deadline. Sure, he’s a 1st round pick and all, and i’m skating away from what I said yesterday, but he may not be able to handle the pressure of filling the void left by Posey.

  10. willedav said, on May 11, 2022 at 10:36 am

MLBTR listed Contreras someone who will attract lot of attention at deadline. Giants have someone doing well at AAA. Genoves, but he’s really young. Would they bring up another young guy to go with Casali? What would you expect to happen in that case?
Genoves will be 23 in couple days. Hitting .284 at Sac with .800 OPS 2 bombs 6 doubles in 74 ABs. Doesn’t sound like second coming of Posey either.

Longo is back. Let’s sweep these sorry fucks.

    1. LaMonte Wade Jr. (L) RF
    2. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
    3. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
    4. Joc Pederson (L) DH
    5. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
    6. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
    7. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
    8. Luis Gonzalez (L) LF
    9. Joey Bart (R) C
    P. Alex Cobb (R)

  13. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2022 at 12:01 pm

The hitting coach Viule (sp) always with the positive saying Bart has 52% hitting the ball hard along with 10 walks is the positive.Of course the K rate is way to high obviously. The pressure of learning all the pitchers, the new button on the sleeve for calling pitches, yada yada and manning the most important position could all be playing in his head. They say nobody feels it more then Bark and he’s taking all kinds of extra hitting, though their working on his stance with a toe tap mechanism that he has and should try and simplify it if possible. Like with Ruf’s struggles early on they will keep working with him for now, but results need to happen soon.Doubt they callup Genoves who’s way to green right now..

    • Unca Chuck said, on May 11, 2022 at 12:26 pm

They’ve got Bailey in front of Genoves. I think. What happened to Aramis Garcia?

      • willedav said, on May 11, 2022 at 12:35 pm

Bailey is at Eugene High A ball. Hitting .164 in 17 games. Weather has been bad in that league so far iirc.

      • alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2022 at 12:46 pm

Garcia is with the pathetic Reds batting a buck 75 he’s no help..

  14. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2022 at 12:07 pm

There you go Kap&Z are listening to me lol..
They put McGoo on the 15 day DL with back tightness to make room for Longoria..
Team will always come up with the fake injury when it calls for it.

Omg who in their right mind would want that gay city connect Fanny pack??

      A fanny packer.

Steven Okrap pitching for the Marlins. . . Streameast isn’t working for the Giants game for some reason.

  28. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2022 at 3:48 pm

Another boot by the Rockies atrocious defense on Longoria’s hit ball as the Giants load them up again and now a run on a Joc walk as they keep the Congo line moving..

  29. Macdog said, on May 11, 2022 at 3:50 pm

Giants have probably scored more runs without a hit than with a hit this series.

  30. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2022 at 3:56 pm

Yep every time I look up it’s baseloaded with just bone head defense, walks, they can’t even throw a ball to 2nd on steal attempts, awful series by these pathetic Rocks, who just want to get out of town fast..

Read a story the jockey Sonny Leon just got sent down for 4 days from Ohio race April 27. Article said it’s his 5th suspension since last September. hmmnn
Wonder if owners will run the filly that won Oaks with Luis Saez aboard in Preakness?

  44. mrsprtdude said, on May 11, 2022 at 7:34 pm

Go Giants! Dubs look awful again. I never gave Kerr as much credit as he deserved. They look off on defense, and no off ball movement, lots of standing around. Tough to watch so I’m not:)

  45. alleykat69 said, on May 11, 2022 at 7:39 pm

Geez Dubs should just pack this one in and play the bench!
They are just awful, 13 turnovers and playing like it should even be higher, getting killed on the boards and Grizzlies hitting every shot, are getting the rebounds for an easy 2nd chance bucket..

  46. unca_chuck said, on May 11, 2022 at 8:27 pm

Warriors down 52. This is what they need. A hugely embarrassing loss.

Dray must be feeling the effects of his losing his friend. He has done nothing but turn the ball over tonight.

I feel bad for the Kings. Their coach is awful. He may get fired before coaching a game.

  47. unca_chuck said, on May 11, 2022 at 8:31 pm

And we might have lost Porter. Which really sucks. All our defenders off the bench are out.
