A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Dreaded Cardinals

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 13, 2022

The Cardinals are one of those teams I think should be better offensively. I like their entire LU. And yet the only thing they really do well is steal bases. I’m worried about this series though, they could break out offensively at any moment.

I’ll check in with Daniel and see if he knows why they aren’t hitting as well as I think they should be hitting.

Webb needs to bring his A game today.

If I knew why they weren’t hitting I’d be making a lot more money than I am now.

It’s pretty befuddling. It wasn’t too surprising that Paul DeJong was struggling, even though he had a great spring, given the last couple of years. It was still surprising it was so bad he had to go to Memphis, though. Tyler O’Neill was an MVP candidate last year and just looks lost this year. Some of that has been, by his own admittance, the arbitration process weighing on him, but that’s settled now and we’ll see if that helps. (Another reason the Cards shouldn’t have gone through this with him, even though they won.)

Arenado’s doing well. Goldy’s Goldy, as y’all all know. Carlson has started to come around and Molina has shown a little more life, but he’s also a 39 year old catcher that you can only ask so much from. The young guys of Yepez and Donovan have brought a little life. This is a team that can put up 10 on one day and barely scratch out four hits in the next.

If it wasn’t for the pitching staff, I don’t know where they’d be.

thanks buddy. What is up with this Yepez fellow? I read they got him for Matt Adams but don’t know anything else about him.

      • Cardinal70 said, on May 13, 2022 at 9:55 am

Yepez was seen as probably a lottery ticket when Adams was traded to the Braves in 2017, but it’s paid off. He was starting to develop before the pandemic and spent 2020 at the alternate site, then blossomed last year as probably the best minor league hitter the Cardinals had (and they had some good ones). He’s more of a 1B/DH type but right now they’re getting him work wherever they can. Yesterday’s game was the first one he hasn’t had a hit in and even then he smashed a ball that was just foul that would have given the Cards the lead in the seventh, I think.

Thanks to Daniel for his comments. He has two recent posts on his C70 blog that cover Cards series here last weekend and games this week vs. Orioles.
Hicks I thought pitched well vs. Giants while Webb continued to struggle on day Giants bats went off. Supposed to be hot in STL so maybe both teams offense could be big factor. Added bat means Kap has more hitters than pitchers right now. Hope that gives him more flexibility and doesn’t hurt when they go to Colo for 3 Monday.

    • Macdog said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:37 am

“Supposed to be hot in STL.” Giants always seem to play there mid-August in brutal heat, was hoping they’d avoid it in May, maybe it’s not quite as humid this time of year.

      • Cardinal70 said, on May 13, 2022 at 9:58 am

I live in Arkansas and it’s been quite hot and humid the last week. There’s supposed to be some relief coming this weekend, I believe. Looks like some storms tonight dropping the temps to mid-80s in SL this weekend, which would be better.

  3. willedav said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:31 am

Webb’s last 4 outings he’s given up 32 hits in 21 1/3 innings, plus 7 BBs, and 13 earned runs for any ERA 6.19. Only 1 HR though. Cards got to him for 8 hits and 2 BBs in 5 last game, the day they lit up Matz etc. 13-7.

  4. willedav said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:50 am

Fun fact: Cards recent called up rookie SS Kramer Robertson, who played college ball at LSU. His mom is HOF current LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey. There’s a nice twitter pic of two of them on field; gotta be thrill for any parent. as expected, LSU fans replies have a lot of “Geaux Kramer”.

    • Cardinal70 said, on May 13, 2022 at 9:56 am

Even if it was just temporary, it was good to see Robertson make his debut. He went back to Memphis before yesterday’s game when Edmundo Sosa came off the COVID list. Robertson’s more of an organizational piece and it’s possible that, if the Cards needed that 40-man spot, he’d be put on waivers, but it’s also possible we’ll see him again for a short stint here and there this season.

I can’t miss my yearly chance to use my phrase about the Cardinals, those “relentless zombies,” meant as a compliment, as they just keep rising up and coming after you.

Willie, I definitely want to read more of Allende’s work, including “Violeta.”
“In the Midst of Winter” was so interesting and entertaining. And read very well in the audiobook by a combination of three different readers. They would trade off reading depending on whichever chapter was mostly from which of the three different main characters. And it was so great how the novel starts off as kind of one thing, and then turns into a wacky caper. And the novel works in fascinating and poignant Latin American history, including refugees from war-torn areas trying to get into the U.S.

I heard about the $100 million christian ad campaign but I think those computer generated billboards behind homeplate tonight– hegetsus.com–represent my first sightng of it. They’re building the brand, they say.

    I. Allende? Come on.

Webb got velo up but wildness cost him.

  10. alleykat69 said, on May 13, 2022 at 5:51 pm

Pitcher Hicks had glove problems with the ump, crazy shit, ump didn’t like the color scheme, had 3 gloves out there at one time before the ump said screw it lets get going..

Alright Gonzalez knocking in Yaz to tie it 1-1..

  11. alleykat69 said, on May 13, 2022 at 6:07 pm

Pitch count with walks is dooming Webb, he’s all over the place.Give him credit for battling to keep it tied, but that 85 degree heat and humidity is sapping him.Lucky to get 5 maybe 6? He needs a clean inning with a low pitch count next inning..

  12. alleykat69 said, on May 13, 2022 at 6:16 pm

2 run double for mustache Yaz!!

  13. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 6:18 pm

Yaz!! 50 pitches in 2 innings is not gonna cut it. Webby needs a clean one.

  14. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 6:19 pm

    Fuck. Nice start, crabman.

  15. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 6:42 pm

    14 pitches for 2 innings. Wade to 1st . . .

  16. willedav said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:03 pm

Celts playing on 4 guards and Horford. Up a dozen with 3 minutes left Game 6.

    • willedav said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:05 pm

On road no less. Gianni’s has 44.

  17. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:14 pm

Porter officially out. We have to start Loney. Kuminga isn’t getting it done. At least early.

  18. Macdog said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:30 pm

Wasted chance there with Belt and Wilmer.

  19. Macdog said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:34 pm

Another misplay by Gonzalez in LF.

  20. James said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:35 pm

Fred Lewis never butchered a play that badly.

  21. Lurker John said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:38 pm

Gonzalez is really struggling in left right now.

  22. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:39 pm

I love it when Klay has an uncontested layup and kicks it out to Memphis. Then on 3 straight possessions, a terrible lead pass by Dray, a lazy cross-court pass by Klay, and a dumb kick out by Steph.

These turnovers are simply stupid stupid stupid.

  23. Macdog said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:49 pm

    Craw comes through!

  24. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:50 pm

  29. alleykat69 said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:53 pm

Good to see Longo drilling a 2 run double he needed that one.
    Casali a 2 run bomb sweet 8-1 !!!

  30. James said, on May 13, 2022 at 7:54 pm

Between Webb’s best start and the extended line up doing its thing, the 88 win prediction looks pretty conservative right now.

    • alleykat69 said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:20 pm

I had the Giants winning 94 games there easily on that pace I believe?

      • James said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:32 pm

Yeah, that’s pretty safe, barring major injuries.

  31. Macdog said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:27 pm

    Good start in St. Lou!

  32. mrsprtdude said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:34 pm

    Go Giants!!!
    Dubs look lost. Unwatchable.
Question..Why can’t Warriors have Kerr on a zoom call on the bench? He wasn’t suspended, and he surely is watching. I know some credit goes to Memphis, but our play has been so bad.
Turned on the game after turning it off for a while saw Curry miss a FT, then back to back turnovers. Dubs had 7 in 2nd Q. Memphis zero.
I’m going to find my joy elsewhere apparently. No more watching…
    Go Dubs!

  33. Lurker John said, on May 13, 2022 at 8:35 pm

Man, Craw makes playing short look easy. He’s going to be missed as much as Posey whenever he decides to hang ’em up. Still playing at such a high level. He’s so consistent it’s easy to take him for granted.

    That should do it.

  39. willedav said, on May 13, 2022 at 9:32 pm

    What an effort from Looney.

    • willedav said, on May 13, 2022 at 9:57 pm

      Wiggins too.

  40. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 10:05 pm

Loney and Wiggins definitely get their kudos for this one. Wiggins hit the biggest 3s in the 4th quarter as the rest of the team struggled. Wiggins finally had a loud 18 instead of a quiet 18.

And Loney had the rebounding game of his life with 22 boards.

But Klay Thompson had a pretty big statement game of his own.

    Dray? 14 points 15 rebounds.

  41. alleykat69 said, on May 13, 2022 at 10:09 pm

70 rebounds unheard of led by Looneys incredible 22 crushed Grizzles 70-44!! 25 on the offensive boards!Onto the the WCF!!!

  42. unca_chuck said, on May 13, 2022 at 10:11 pm

70 rebounds for the Warriors tonight. Somewhere (North Korea?) Dennis Rodman is smiling.

  43. alleykat69 said, on May 13, 2022 at 10:29 pm

Larry Smith and his hard hat section fans are smiling as well. He’s the last Warrior to get 20 plus board in a playoff game back in 87.. Man I miss that guy he was ferocious on the boards and his followers in the upper deck was fantastic entertainment, they were hilarious!

  44. djloo27 said, on May 13, 2022 at 10:40 pm

In a 1970 playoff game Willis Reed had 36 points & 36 rebounds.
Never seen anything like that outside of Chamberlain…
