Nice One
That was a quality win. One of the harder things to do is to go to SherpaLand with the Rockies having already been playing there. They are already used to the climate and it’s tough for a team to come in there and compete Game 1 of the new series. Couple that with the fact that we’d just gotten blown out in the Sunday night game and it’s even more impressive that we scratched and clawed and still came out with the victory. And even Yaz with the most suspect of mustashes ended up being the hero.
Casali slash line: .298/.377/.532 for .909 OPS
Cueto went 6 shutout innings in debut for ChiSox.
Bum took L giving up 3 runs in 5 vs. Dogs.
Cobb/Webb to close out series vs. Rox. Freeland goes tomorrow for them and he was on mound last time Rox won over Giants (6 innings 1 run), game Mac was talking about from Aug 14 at the O with him and Sarge Chi and Flav.
7. San Francisco Giants
Record as of 5/16: 20-14
Last Power Ranking: 10
The Giants just got boat-raced by the Cardinals on Sunday to drop a series, ending the week on a dour note. But most of the week was spent winning, and it hardly seems like anyone should be worried. We long ago answered the riddle of “Are the Giants good?” in the affirmative. Now, we have moved on to other questions.
Is the Giants’ offense better than it seems? (Yes.) Could your grandmother, the one with the bad hip, strike out Joey Bart? (Maybe.) Could any of the free agents the Giants didn’t sign have helped them? (Surprisingly, Grant Brisbee deduces, only a few.) You know things are going well when most of the ink spilled this week was to scrutinize the Connor Joe Era and pick apart small trades that sent Mauricio Dubón to the Astros and brought in Donovan Walton from the Mariners.
But the biggest unanswerable question remains: If you have a beard, do you have a mustache?
power ranking from the Athletic
So glad we didn’t sign Bryant.
Giants are still 2nd NL for runs per game scored, even though slugging hasn’t been there like last year. Yes Bryant and other FAs from Brisbee column imo would not have been good long term/$$$ fit. Hopefully guys like Ruf Craw and others can get going and Giants can continue to get on base if power is gonna lag somewhat. Can Wade and Belt do what they did last year? Can they get more out of 2b with Estrada and LaStella?.
More worried about pitching, which is only 7th NL for runs allowed. They don’t allow many HRs or BBs, but are middle of pack for many other stats. Missing DeSclafani for long time, Webb still not right, Rodon high pitch counts limit innings he can throw. Cobb and Junis mostly fine so far, but there are fewer pen guys you can call reliable, so more work they get due to SPs going less innings isn’t good.
Rogers and McGoo are worrisome. They don’t seem to be where they were last year.
Quality win, especially coming off an ass-whoopin’ in St. Louie…
I am happy overall with the team at this juncture, given all the injuries and covid set-backs. There are some areas of concern but overall, I think the team is looking good.
Upcoming series against the friars and Mets will be telling. We are beating the teams we should beat. We need to win series with teams that are playing well, such as SD and NY.
I’m with Flav, any win at that damn ballpark is a good win. Even more than the Latrine, I dread these games at Coors, because as we saw last night no lead is safe.
It is a tough ballpark to play in but the Giants have won 11 straight against the Rockies so I don’t see any dominating factor the Rockies have anymore there..
When I read stat about baseball catchers only averaging .211 hitting throughout the leagues I can’t overly bitch about the Giants catchers especially when they have 8 HR’s 4 each and Casali on a hot streak with an average over .300!
Unca and I were at a game there a couple years ago (I was on business, he was there visiting). Giants got out to an early and large lead. Rox rallied and won it with a walk-off hit. NO lead is safe in that nightmare ballpark.
Yeah, that was awful. Bochy was going with his ‘one-batter-per-pitcher’ strategy from the 6th inning on and it was sucky because I knew they were gonna come back.
An early highlight tho.
Gonzalez optioned to Sac to make room for LaStella…
1. Tommy La Stella (L) DH
2. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
3. Wilmer Flores (R) 3B
4. Joc Pederson (L) RF
5. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
6. Darin Ruf (R) LF
7. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
8. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
9. Curt Casali (R) C
P. Alex Cobb (R)
New #1 catcher?
Kapler’s not dumb enough not to ride the hot bat of Casali right now..
It’s time for La Stella to make some memories for Giants fans. And I actually hate that phrase “making memories,” but in this case I think it has some usefulness. I was trying to think of a La Stella memory with the Giants and I was drawing a blank. He’s left no impression so far.
He has the stomach turning habit of spitting into his batting gloves after every single pitch…
I’m pleased to see the Red Sox doing lousy. Cora should have been banned at least 10 years from MLB.
Well I guess LaStella can continue to in his gloves after that Monster upper deck HR!
Measured at 464 ft!! Their’s a memory moment Zumie..
Spit
Great AB by Yaz fouling off tough pitches working the count then ripping his 2nd double of the game knocking in Belt,Mr.Ed!! Yaz is really finding his groove right now..Now a base hit for Ruf and it’s 6-1..
Just like walks errors will cost you here too.
Pour it on!
Good call, blue!
Get him out!
Unreal. Here we go.
jeez 10-7. SF may need to tack on another field goal or TD to win this one.
Kapler is such a moron Cobb obviously lost it 5 freaking hits the last one a 3 run bomb now it’s a game again at 10-7!!!
I fucking hate Coors Field. The goddamned place should be razed. 10 runs and it’s not near enough.
Gotta get some of those runs back.
Well it doesn’t help when Kapler can’t realize he doesn’t have a pitcher except Webb&Rodon who can go 6 innings! Why does he always wait to long to pull a starter? Until it’s too late!
Pederson hasn’t done shit it two weeks.
Yeah LJ I can’t stand watching Joc the Cock useless AB’s right now, and he’s had plenty of chances to knock in some runs..
Pederson is wearing out his welcome. Fucking Cobb was done and Kappy had 3 chances to get him out and didn’t.
He’s a lot less likable when he’s sucking at the plate, but they’ll keep trotting him out there. And Kapler does have a tendency to wait too long to pull starters. Seems like that happens quite a bit to managers early in their careers.
Slowest game in history? 3.5 hours so far.
The 6th inning alone was probably an hour.
23 minutes long but felt like an hour! Shit the Giants have 7 walks( btw Rockies pitcher suck throwing strikes)2 more on errors ,14 hits, something like 23 baserunners, yes that will add up to a marathon time game,
La Stella is indeed making some memories tonight.
Jesus. FInd the zone.
Doval is really hard to watch. He just does not grasp the concept of pounding the zone and his body language on the mound is awful.
Last night he was hitting 101 with fastball and got a K with slider too. Inconsistent command.
Two fucking walks ahead of Cron.
Slater with the save!
Hooooooooooboy.
Nice one Chuck!
lol. Great movie.
Giants always have to do it the hard way!
Doval battles back after the 2 walks as Slater makes the nice play to finish it off!!
Another W against these chumps 12 straight wins now against them!!
Yeah, Javi, he fought his way through that inning. It seems like that happens more often than not. Somebody give him a tape of Mariano Rivera’s career highlights so he can see how a top closer goes about his business. He has the stuff, but his head is not there yet. Right now he’s the human crapshoot.
Out lasted em.
East coast hangs in there. Game seemed like it started yesterday.
I’ll take the win but they can’t get out of there fast enough as far as I’m concerned.
Seemed like Bochy would very often sacrifice those weekday afternoon getaway games with a scrub lineup…
Doval’s “body language” on the mound is great. He’s cool, arrogant, and thoroughly unconcerned with what you think. Unfortunately, his command hasn’t quite matched his attitude, but it’s close. I think we’ll remember him the way we remember Beck, Nen, Wilson, and, for me, Romo. (I remember Lavelle and Minton, too, but those were different times.)
Kaplan is surely a moron for listening to the stats, to the AI, and to the dozens of coaches advising him. A fucking moron. And Cora is a sinner. He “stole.” He probably also commits adultery and bears false witness against his neighbor. He should be stoned and shackled to a dungeon wall for ten years, not managing in a MLB dugout.
