Ode to Panik
I will never be a fan of both the slow and the weak but Joe Panik played an intergral role in 2014.
Will always qualify as a great Giant because of what he did for our last World Series win.

Congrats on a great career, @JoePanik! You’ll always be #ForeverGiant 🧡 pic.twitter.com/FwXy5425dn

It’s a shame he never played in Detroit.
From a 2014 game:

Panik (makes last out) in Detroit.
Hah, it had to be done. WTG Mac.
Such a strange career. 2014 giants were scrambling for IF help with guys like Arias Ehire Duffy Brandon Hicks, then Panik comes up and finishes year hitting a soft .300. Couple more decent years when he hit some HRs but he was done as a hitter after age 26. And never recovered with other teams either. To be fair he did have neck/back issues that limited playing time and maybe weren’t fully solved and healed.
still new, he fielded the last out of Lincecum’s second no hitter
Interesting and random how things happen in sports. Panik won a championship, and McCovey and Will Clark didn’t.
I sensed something going wrong in Panik’s career when defenses were doing a big shift on him. If ever a hitter needed to use the whole field, it was Panik; but he maybe got caught up in the MLB obsession with HRs, to his detriment. Who knows? I think we’ll always be a little mystified about his career. And, as Willie says, injuries may have been the thing that were the issue.
He’ll always be remembered for the ’14 season. And that’s a lot.
I’m not sure replay officials would overturn that Hosmer call these days. It seems, to me, that replay officials have become more conservative over the years about overturning calls.
I seem to remember Panik had a big game in my first meetup with Loo at Giants-Mets in August 2014. Yeah, Panik filled a hole at 2B that last WS season. I can watch that double play vs. the Royals all day.
You’re right as usual, Mac.
This was the game:

I think our encouragement helped get a struggling Panik on the right track.
BTW, heard this morning that the Panda is playing in some Mexican league.
Supposedly Bartolo Colon and some other notable ex-MLers are teammates…
Slush has Chron column on work Crawford is doing with hitting coaches to get going. Does mention that lockout and shortened ST hurt. “The last couple years, I’d been working with our hitting group 3, 4 days a week during January and February and that led to so much muscle memory that I really didn’t get this year. That was a big, big factor last year…”
Craw and Belt, 2 others in the play, still going and thriving. Panik out of baseball at 31
Mac and Loo, thanks for thread with 2014 box score of game you guys went to. Talk about the usual suspects–Perez in LF Blanco in CF Ishi PH Duffy an AB at 2b.
Wilmet PH that day too. Other than him Craw and Belt and I guess Romo, who else from then is still playing MLB in America?
From the Giants side, Bum,Stickland,Triple 000 Andriiaze (Sp) still playing..
Mets at the time..Wheeler, DeGrom, Família, still playing I believe?
Thx Kat. Did see Strick is still around somewhere.
that was HBCU Morgan St. Univ marching band playing at Pimlico.
Notable alumni include RB Leroy Kelly, T Rosie Brown and Willie Lanier. wow what a player that guy was, part of outstanding trio of linebackers for Stram’s Chiefs. Mr. Lanier still alive too at age 76, as is Mr. Kelly at 80..
My favorite RB & LB right there.
Not easy following Jim Brown…
Gonzalez back, Wade to IL with left knee inflammation.
Is that the same knee that sidelined him earlier?

Yeah same left knee. That’s not a good sign missing the start of the season, rehabbing, rest, plays some games at Sac, then a handful of games before it acts up again?Wondering if this will be a ongoing problem all year?Good to have Gonzalez in your hip pocket but Wade is special when he’s going good. They don’t call him “Late Night” without a good reason with his clutch hits from last year..
Yikes, didn’t take long for Pads to strike back.
Well, that sucked.
Ruf getting a couple back.
Ruf Ruf!
Ruf’s really turned it round – rewarding Kotter for sticking with him.
I was ready to DFA him a few weeks ago…
Ruf even showing some glove.
Ruf that fucker up.
Ruf Ruf!!
Old Ruf and Ready!
Instead of this ugly camo crap that the U.S. military probably receives peanuts from, why not show some guts and wear something in the colors of the Ukraine? Then follow it up by actually sending them a major chunk of what it brings in…
Agreed.
Casali should’ve caught that but the batter was definitely cramping his space.
No idea what the rule is…
I thought that could of been called batters interference, your suppose to get of the way on any play around home plates..
Can’t they do better then Radio Shack earpieces for pitchers?
Miller allotments jacked up on his calls..Rountine out to right by Yaz and he’s sending it In McCovey cove..
Got to say camo green and orange jerseys is a real god awful combo.
Thanks God Rogers doesn’t sidearm those throws to first.
Dubs with a gutty win.
The Giant killer.
It seems like this guy’s been killing them for 20 years.
Usually with the long ball…
Fuck. 2 bleeders and a blast.
Dubs really clamped down on defense the 2nd half .Looney fantastic game!
Goddam Rodgers!!
I get so tired of seeing Rogers give up 3 infield hits an appearance.
Bark’s swing has more holes than Blackburn, Lancashire…
Haha.
Why the fuck would go with Pederson over Belt?
Wilmet!
Good old Mr. Ed!!!
Can’t believe Pederson mustered that walk, that was huge! And of Course the horse called Mr.Ed clutch again to tie it up!!
All too briefly.Machado has hurt them all night.
Games like this drive me crazy.
That hurt…
