A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Crash And Burned

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 24, 2022

When you look back on it, it’s really incredible that the Giants let Matt Williams play and suck so much as they did in ’87, ’88 and ’89. I mean, those were hardly rebuilding years. And yet though he was patently awful he had nearly 700 at bats during those 3 seasons.

Which brings us to Joey Bart. Do we just keep running him out there over and over watching him strike out about half the time. HALF! Shit Williams at his worst never hit the 50% strikeout ratio. He had more power, too. And was a stud defensively. So why exactly do we keep Bart around?

Because there’s no one else? Because we’re hoping he “blossoms” the way Williams did? The whole “blossoming” thing is funny to me. Like, they are completely different people, why should one be linked to the other? Isn’t it entirely possible that Bart is just another complete whiff in a long line of first round draft whiffs the Giants have made over the last 30 years?

If you want to read something completely hilarious take a look at like 1988 onward. They’ve hit on like 4 guys in 34 years. That’s a *Bart-like* average.

Sometimes I wonder if Bart isn’t being over coached, kind of like Belt was until he simplified the input. Matt got it together when he worked with Dusty and later Bobby to keep his bat back, he started licking his shoulder to remind himself to hold back

Yes, draft picks are tricky, I doubt the Giants record on picks is any worse or better than other teams. Bum, Timmy, Caine and Buster were great 1st round picks. I’d have to consider Zack Wheeler was also but not for us. Joe Panik was an AS and GG winner and contributed to a championship. Although not great careers, Aardsma and Gillaspie both had 8 years in the majors and Culberson is still playing. The Giants 1988 1st rounder is probably my favorite SF SS, Royce Clayton. Although he didn’t turn out to be the next Barry Larkin, he was an AS once and had a 17 year career.

Lets hope Bart puts it together because the 1st rounder picked just two year after him, Patrick Baily, is only hitting .210 with a.625 OPS for the Emeralds at the high A level.

Improved draft and development was supposed to be calling card of Z/H regime. Bart was in Sac last season, and so was Ramos for a bit. Neither of them look like ML players right now; Bart has trouble making much contact and Ramos is struggling in hitter friendly AAA league with OPS in .600 range. So are these guys beyond help and total washouts?

Checking Slush twitter last night came across some explosive posts by J T Snow, who lets all beat writers have it and says none of them (Slush Baggs Pavs) hold Zaidi and ownership accountable. Says there is significant talent gap btw SF and quality opponents and says “this is what it looks like when you build a roster around waiver wire cast offs and old past their prime guys and don’t spend any money on premium talent .”

Trying to find tweet either from him or that he retweeted from someone else that blamed “johnson family” for funding insurrectionists instead of baseball team.

    • Macdog said, on May 24, 2022 at 9:04 am

I don’t think that’s the real JT Snow. The one you saw has 1 follower, haha.

Ha thanks. He was pretty funny though.

Teams never give up on first-round picks. The guy will be 30 years old and playing in a AA jerkwater town with one streetlight before everyone will agree that he sucks.

  5. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 24, 2022 at 8:22 am

At the start of the year, I figured you give Bart the whole season. If he figures things out, great, and if not, find someone else. His lack of production doesn’t seem too tragic when the team is winning, but it becomes more problematic when they’re not.

  6. willedav said, on May 24, 2022 at 8:34 am

fwiw, Hjelle pitched 5 shutout 2 hit innings Sunday for Sac. Other than hot hitting 3b Villar, don’t see much help coming from there. We’ve already seen Vosler etc. As Chuck mentioned one of the Catchers Pareda is hitting .290 but with .719 OPS and not much power.

  7. snarkk said, on May 24, 2022 at 8:37 am

For years we’ve been fed the continual line of hyped talent, like Ramos. Now the guy should be ready to play, and it looks so far like he’s a bust, or is tired of being in the system and not getting a shot. Another possible zero in a long line of decades of no superior home-grown outfield talent. None, nada. I don’t consider guys like Duggar to have broken that losing streak. Instead, inferior guys like Ruf are playing LF and making a hash of defense, as in last night. Based on his moves so far and a 107 win last season, I’m easily giving Farhan the benefit of the doubt this year to get the next generation of minor league talent ready to play for 2023. This season looks like a “let’s see where we are” year. But, I agree with JT, this billionaire ownership sits on a big time revenue team and needs to start funding some real MLB talent, and not white supremacist, insurrectionist aszhat politicians. The Dubs ownership actually acts like it is always desperate to put a winning team on the floor, and spends like it…

  8. xoot said, on May 24, 2022 at 9:40 am

I have a tendency to look at the top ten picks. Bart was a Sabes/Evans’s number-two pick. Up to that point (from 97 on) they’d done pretty well in the top ten. Farhan’s first top ten pick was Bishop (a whopping .637 OPS in Eugene right now).

Old 3B AS Al Rosen had faith in Matt Williams. I can’t believe that anyone on the Giants’ staff or in the FO has faith in Bart. (Wtf happened to the guy who showed up looking like a major leaguer for the first two weeks of the season?) But it’s also hard to believe they have much faith in Bailey.

  9. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2022 at 9:42 am

107 wins buys you some leeway, but if we continue the fall, the rumbling grows louder.

What then? Sell at the break? Jettison anyone with a pulse? Mr. IR Belt? Crawfish isn’t leaving and has another year. Longo has another year as well. But our payroll is way down, so

    • Macdog said, on May 24, 2022 at 9:56 am

Longo next year $13M team option, $5 buyout, which hopefully will be the latter.

      • Macdog said, on May 24, 2022 at 9:57 am

        $5M buyout.

      • alleykat69 said, on May 24, 2022 at 10:28 am

I’ll pay for the 5 dollar buyout and throw in a few rounds of beers for Longoria just as a parting jester Mac…

Besides Estrada at 2B going forward there is just so damm many holes to fill, outfield,SS,3B,1B,C it will take time to get Z’s supposed hot shot prospects and pitchers up to speed and experience to succeed. There just too green right now as even Ramos the closest to help out is back struggling in AAA..

They need an impact player( 2 would be better) Other then Lucky Luciano,Harrison&Bednar,Bishop &that other outfielder Marte? who scouts rate better then Ramos all other prospects can be on the trade table. The tight wide ownership that has Z’s hands tied, need to let him pull his 1st blockbuster trade and go after Juan Soto the fan base needs a “Star” to really get behind right now instead of the same recycled dumpster pickups.

      • unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2022 at 10:51 am

        $5 sounds much better!!!

      • Macdog said, on May 24, 2022 at 12:25 pm

Haha, I knew that $5 typo wouldn’t get past you guys.

  10. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2022 at 9:56 am

so we need to start buying if these guys don’t work out this year. The Fairchild/Padlo/Lloverna experiment is just sifting through hay for that needle. Then again, who thought Connor Joe from Kokomo would be so good?

But if this continues with the vets getting hurt and the AAA guys playing like AA guys, bring up Ramos, Pereda, Hjelle, and Bishop. Other teams do this shit all the time.

I don’t expect them to be Ted Williams out of the gate, but at least we can get a sense of something. Give them a taste of the bigs. Ramos is 22. Bishop 23. Give them a shot. And if (when) Crawfish goes down, bring up Luciano. Their collective psyches won’t be irreparably damaged by getting a taste of the bigs.

    • Bozo said, on May 24, 2022 at 10:24 am

Connor Joe was another Farhan waiver wire pick up. The Giants would have had to keep him on the 20 man roster after they picked him up in 2019, since they needed a fix right then, that wasn’t going to happen.
He ended up having surgery for testicular cancer and has come back from that, so good on him. Does being able to have testosterone legally, help him with hitting? I don’t know, but whatever it is, he sure looks like a different hitter to me.

  11. snarkk said, on May 24, 2022 at 10:45 am

Only 26K attendance last night against a good Mets team.
Sure, it’s Monday, but that’s not great compared to the sell out years. Could still be Covid caution, but I think there must be more to it than that. Morning guys on KNBR today were ripping Giants and Farhan for the seemingly endless turnstile of players, that leads to fans not being invested in the team…

    • unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2022 at 10:52 am

And there were a lot of Mets fans in the house

  12. zumiee said, on May 24, 2022 at 12:12 pm

Kap needs to give the “position player pitching” thing a rest for about 3 months. It’s kind of funny ha-ha once in a great while, but two games in a row went from humorous to painfully embarrassing.

    • Macdog said, on May 24, 2022 at 12:28 pm

Agree, and 3 times in the last 8 days.

  13. zumiee said, on May 24, 2022 at 12:19 pm

I’m willing to give the Giants fans a huge amount of slack regarding attendance at the games. For me, who usually went to several games a year, I’m just not ready yet to sit near strangers for 3 hours. And I haven’t been to a movie theater in over two years. I went to a small outdoor concert last summer, where judging by the performer, I’m sure the vast majority of people there were vaccinated.
I’m still wearing a mask in grocery stores, and recently I got the first bit of mocking I’ve ever gotten for wearing a mask. A guy across the parking lot said I “look silly in that mask.” He was a pretty big guy so he’s no doubt used to bullying people. I just kind of stared at him and kept walking and he lost interest in me pretty quickly. Like, why did he even care anyway? That’s so weird, in my opinion.

    • snarkk said, on May 24, 2022 at 1:47 pm

      Probably an anti-vaxxer, too.
He’ll look sillier on a ventilator in ICU.
Covid is on the upswing in the Bay Area. The Bay Area positive test / case rates are up near the highest in the US since the rates were low to start, and now people are letting it hang out and not masking, or doing other risky behavior. And, it could be even higher since people that test positive with home tests may not report in to their doctors. I’m wearing a mask everywhere I go in public in stores and other inside places. I’m not getting on a flying tube anytime soon…

  14. Winder said, on May 24, 2022 at 12:31 pm

We certainly don’t have any element of surprise anymore. It just seems to me to be an overall weak squad. We have our days but they aren’t very regular. SD’s pitching is way better this year and they are gonna be tough in every game. The Mets are a very good team and I am afraid that we will only be successful against the bottom feeders this year. I had a lot more hope and faith in our minor league system than I do right now. Looks like we might be struggling for awhile.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2022 at 1:13 pm

There’s the rub. Our hope is to capitalize on the bottom-feeders until we make a splash at the deadline. Or we sink to the bottom ourselves. With the playoffs basically becoming the hockey/basketball playoffs, we still may be able to sneak in. But the haves and the have-nots show a big disparity.

We are hurt and scuffling. If we can tread water til Wade and Belt get off the trainer’s table, and Longo/La Stella get going/ the pitching settles down, yadda yadda yadda, we might get in.

  15. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2022 at 1:35 pm

I’m not high risk, so I don’t wear a mask. Didn’t even have to wear it on the flight to Hawaii last month. Both my daughters got it and suffered minimally. But they didn’t get it from us.

At this point in the whole deal (been vacced and one booster) I figure it won’t be too bad. But what do I know?

Lost 2 friends before the vaccine came out, so it really sucks, but it’s to the point of being something that only very high-risk people are getting sick from. And I don’t hang around anyone who is very high risk.

Not doing a lot of big gatherings anyway, so there’s that. But there are 2 weddings coming up.

  19. unca_chuck said, on May 24, 2022 at 7:07 pm
