A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Piling Up The Losses

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 8, 2022

Well another horrendous ending. At least we were competitive this game though in a rather boring way. My main man Luke made the trek down for the game.

San Dawg had 4 tickets to the game but had to ditch them as he has to go to a wedding up here this weekend….

Luke said the stadium is quite handsome in person.

Baggarly this a.m. says that Kapler & Co. expected the bunt and planned “to try to record the out at third base. That was the main intention. We weren’t able to do that.” He actually said “record.”

    • Flavor said, on July 8, 2022 at 7:49 am

Last night was the maddest I’ve seen you since you’d tussle with twinfan back in the day

  2. unca_chuck said, on July 8, 2022 at 8:21 am

Dumb. Get an out in that situation. We prolly woulds lost anyway, but at least after the bunt and out we could play the IF defense back after loading the bases again.

Not bunting the runner to 3rd is infuriating as we rarely get timely hits, but all 3 guys in the 9th k’ed anyway so what’s the point?

Noticed someone near Pads bench late last night in their new City Connect gear-light blue hat, colorful unis. Good to see Pads fill the joint even if SanDawg isn’t one of them.

Did Luke eat 50 eggs at the game?

    • alleykat69 said, on July 8, 2022 at 9:18 am

Mercedes’ can handle 50 eggs, they’re no failure to communicate with his belly..

    • Macdog said, on July 8, 2022 at 9:24 am

Not a good 10th inning for the two trade chips.

      • djloo27 said, on July 8, 2022 at 9:47 am

True, Mac. Hopefully Met brass slept through it.
In the meantime, every idiot Yankee fan that calls WFAN never heard of anyone but Benintendi.
        Clueless, entitled dumbbells…

  5. alleykat69 said, on July 8, 2022 at 9:16 am

Still don’t get Kapler’s dumb thinking walking the catcher to start the inning?
If he’s up there bunting you easily have a better chance nailing the runner at 3rd, even a good bunt he isn’t going to beat out a hit.. Grisham is a real good bunter with 6 sac bunts on the season and with speed, that was setup to be a disaster from the beginning..

And what’s this hogwash about a visiting team playing for a 2 runs are more in extras, just get a run in and have some confidence ( though shaky) that your bullpen can get the job done.

  6. willedav said, on July 8, 2022 at 10:50 am

idk, might seem counter intuitive, but I looked up some columns on bunting as visiting team in 10th, and most said not a good idea. analyses of minors ball (where ghost runner rule has been there longer) showed run expectancy didn’t change much with 1 out man on 3b, and that teams won just as often (and in some cases more often) by choosing not to do so.

Caveats seem to be where you are in the order, and how well the player you are asking to sacrifice (which does go wrong) can handle the bat.

And there is much agreement it’s incumbent on visiting team to score more than once.
iirc, sites like baseball prospectus downgraded managers that bunted more frequently.

    • blade3colorado said, on July 8, 2022 at 11:00 am

I agree with you completely, but ONLY because no ONE knows how to bunt properly, e.g., here are the best of all time . . . https://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/platform/amp/2012/12/10/3748738/best-bunter-all-time-career-bunt-hits-bases-empty-mlb

Sheesh, if teams taught it, maybe they would have a better success rate. Question – does little league even teach it anymore?

      • snarkk said, on July 8, 2022 at 11:34 am

I heard the other day on KNBR that the Giants had yet to have one sac bunt so far this season. In early July.
This is a game that is a stranger to me. No bunts. No steals. Rocket shot 3 hoppers gathered up by the 2nd baseman playing beer league short right field and throwing out the runner at first. No name “openers” going 1-5 innings — go 5 and give up 3, and that’s a quality start. Either I’m getting too old for this new type of game or this new type of game sucks and I’m wondering how any young people can possibly get interested in it anymore…

      • blade3colorado said, on July 8, 2022 at 11:56 am

I can’t watch today’s game, albeit, I follow the player statistics, box scores, online game casts, etc., and that is due entirely to daily fantasy (Draft Kings primarily). Same deal with football and college basketball . . . I digress though. The game is unwatchable for the reasons you stated snarkk. I just do not understand why they don’t just set the “clock” back to the 1960s rules and style of play, particularly pitching rules/roster allotments. Let’s see how long these Specialists last when they have to pitch longer than one freaking inning because the roster pitcher size is 8 or 9 pitchers versus the 13 or 14 today.

No idea what this Commissioner is thinking. I’m betting this will be a regional sport a la beach volleyball, hockey, or soccer in 10 years.*

        * Probably wrong to put soccer in this group, e.g., I visit my mom’s house frequently and the school yard is ONLY used for soccer (and cricket . . . WTF???) on the weekends and not at all during the week. Equally important, it has an approved little league diamond with stands and snack bar, but little league closed it down 1-2 seasons ago. Shameful. When I was a kid, I played little league and unorganized ball until dark on that field all year and multiple games (baseball in spring and summer, football in fall and winter) . . . Concrete basketball courts ALWAYS had all courts being used too.

  7. willedav said, on July 8, 2022 at 10:54 am

Ben Clemens from fangraphs june 30 2020 So you want to bunt in extra innings:
“Don’t bunt as the visiting team. It simply doesn’t do what you want it to do.”

    • xoot said, on July 8, 2022 at 12:13 pm

I can see that, if Wynns isn’t leading off the inning for you.

  8. willedav said, on July 8, 2022 at 11:48 am

Minus Estrada and Gonzalez as they are right now, Giants just aren’t built to bunt or run much except for Slater.
Once analytics got to looking at run expectancy/win expectancy, bunting and giving up an out didn’t accomplish all that much.

    • snarkk said, on July 8, 2022 at 12:19 pm

This new game has removed a ton of athleticism from the game. It’s removed the reasons we used to have for watching it — great athletes running, jumping, throwing, making great plays.
I’m not going to pay $200 to go see a game with a snarkette, with tickets, parking or BART, food, all that time, just to see a bunch of Ks, fly outs, former hits made into outs by infielders in shifts, with maybe a couple of home runs. No steals, no great plays on the infield due to the shifts, etc. This new style of game is just boring ass…

  9. Bozo said, on July 8, 2022 at 12:02 pm

It seems this team was built with the live ball in mind. Maybe MLB will put it back in play during the second half so we can get that “energy” back.

For today’s loss, I have a throwing error in the 8th inning by whoever we have at 2B.

    • Flavor said, on July 8, 2022 at 12:37 pm

they have way too many DH’s on this team. And LaStella should never play in the field again. It’s borderline cruel to ask a guy with zero range and one bad leg to play 2nd base at the MLB level.

  10. alleykat69 said, on July 8, 2022 at 1:26 pm

It’s borderline insanity that the Giants keep a cripple like LaStella on their roster.
Figures he was the ghost runner in the 10th, it would of taken 2 hits to score him.
Can’t they reach an injury settlement with him? Are is his contact totally locked in?
Are is it simply Z’s first stupid 3 year contract and he doesn’t want to look like a fool,
by doing anything but let him collect his free money, and continue to use him for options to the injury list which surely will be coming up again..

    • unca_chuck said, on July 8, 2022 at 4:53 pm

They got 2 hits all game. Hoping against hope for 2 in the 10th is a fool’s errand. And yeah, bunt or no, walk or no, we were gonna lose regardless.

  11. xoot said, on July 8, 2022 at 4:41 pm

I don’t have any idea how hobbled LaStella is now. Commentators keep saying he has to take it easy, but how do you know? 15 PAs this month, on base twice, both BBs. Only 3 SOs, so maybe he’s slow down the line, but I just haven’t noticed.

    Joc starts the AS game!

  12. willedav said, on July 8, 2022 at 4:46 pm

The game itself is so different from what I grew up with, but not so different from a year ago.
How the Giants as presently constructed are playing it, though, light years away.

I’m reading Roger Angell, “The Summer Game”, from his New York perspective in the stadium and neighborhood bars in 60s, and he’s complaining too about dilution of talent due to expansion and TV taking over World Series and revenue. It was during this era that CBS owned Yanks. Fascinating stories, and he traveled covering WS and 1962 playoffs in LA, SF and in later years St. Louis Minnesota, etc.

Snell tonight, another LHP for however long he lasts. Not trying to reverse hex Giants but he has had rough time in SD.

Estrada was activated, LaStella to covid list

    • snarkk said, on July 8, 2022 at 6:10 pm

So Estrada gave it to LaStella?
Looks like LaStella is Farhan’s first big bust. The guy seems to be an IL magnet. He IS a former A’s player, and was hurt a lot there. I generally don’t want any ex A’s. Durham was stone hands; Hudson was so-so and then cratered in the 2014 playoffs. Baseball is the least athletically taxing on a body, other than pitchers, compared to the other pro sports in N. America. A guy constantly hurt playing baseball is somebody I would not want as a FA, because it’s not the sport really doing the injuring, it’s the guy’s body that is somehow conducive to injury…

mm used to visit Seattle and south of there a lot for mgmt conferences (owners had number of stores there and owned hotel and other biz) and talked to men and women who lived and worked there and enjoyed it. I’ve heard weather has mellowed a bit over the years. Knew a sales rep who lived on one of the islands and had catch ferry to get home from city.
good luck to you and family. Couple minor league teams up there too, besides M’s.

Good for you Snarkk&Mrs.Snarkk and the Snarkettes..
Yeah I used to get up to Washington ( and it’s much nicer and greener then Oregon imo apologies Winder)where my x-father in law lived. He got sick of the Bay Area living in Burlingame cause he felt like all his friends would use his house as a hub to the airport when they traveled.

Moved up to Anacortes Washington it’s really beautiful there and kinda in a banana belt for weather ( not as much rain as in Seattle)AnaCortes is the gateway to the San Juan islands and it’s a harbor area but you can still drive anywhere from there, that including taking your car on a ferry ⛴ to visit are stay in a motel/camp if you like at islands named Friday’s Harbor,Orcas Island,Lopez Island.
Another thing he loved it’s 75 miles north of Seattle which was on purpose, so there wasn’t anymore airport drop offs! 😂✈️

Then he rips a gapper and going into 2nd with a slide the dogs blew up with mustard everywhere. The opponents were just cracking along with the Tigers players, everyone but Smith that is..

Diane Keaton’s character, a young woman, who, for reasons I can’t remember, married an old herring salesman. And now he is on his deathbed.
Faking grief, she says “I wish we would have made love more often. Or even once.”
The old man summons his last remaining strength to rise up a moment, and looks at her, and says:
        “Once would have been nice.”

I saw an NFL network documentary about Tom Rathman. It was great to get to know more about him. I didn’t really know much about him. He helped bring toughness to the “finesse” offense. He’s got a good sense of humor. I had totally forgotten that he fumbled late in a game vs. the Rams in ’89, which allowed the Rams to kick a field goal at the end and win 13-12. I remember that as one of the two regular season losses that season. The other was against Green Bay, when a pick-six for the Niners got wiped out by an off-side penalty. That ’89 team was a repeat Super Bowl champion that season, but Rathman still is bothered by that fumble. It just shows how things can stick in the memory in sports. The fans have long forgotten he fumbled late in that game, but he remembers it well.

    • zumiee said, on July 8, 2022 at 9:47 pm

I think a case can be made that the ’89 Niner team is the best team in NFL history. They had to start the season playing about 6 of their first 7 games on the road, because of the Giants being in the World Series, and the earthquake. And they started the season 6-1 or 7-1. They crushed all their opponents in the playoffs, including the 45-10 bulldozing of the Broncos in the Super Bowl.
In the final regular season game, with the top seed in the playoffs already clinched, and playing for nothing in that last regular season game, they shut out the Bears with a score of 24-0, or something like that.

      • unca_chuck said, on July 8, 2022 at 10:21 pm

Damn straight. There are some that think the ’87 team that lost to the Vikes was better. ’88 was a strange ass season that they struggled like hell until they caught fire halfway through the season. I think because of the loss to the Vikes in that ’87 playoff game.

Yeah, baseball is fading. Football gonna be gearing up soon.

My friend Kevin (2nd from left), his kids went to preschool and kindergarten with Rathman’s kids in Belmont back when Rathman was coaching. That jersey sat in the back of his car for 4 years as I wanted him to try and get Rathman to sign it. Alas, it did not come to pass.
