Baseball Sucks
Tired of the Giants.
Let’s talk coolest Niners. You guys got my Niner love going last night with the Rathman talk. Without question the coolest Niner I ever met was Tom Rathman. He was a fixture at the Bay Meadows clubhouse in the off season back in the day. Totally approachable, just one of the guys, he loves horse racing. Bobby Bonds was there all the time too but he spent most of his time on the porch smoking cigs. And he’d never talk to anyone when he was inside. But Rathman? Just an awesome dude.
Speaking of football I read an article the other day, I can’t find it now I think it was in the Chronicle, that said flag football is inevitable. All football will be flag some day except pro and I didn’t really understand how that would work. Like you’d play flag growing up and through college then all of a sudden go to tackle in the pros? Didn’t make sense.
mm met a few over the years. Ronnie and Ms. Lott came into store a few times and I sold something to Joe Staley, who is massive and really nice guy. Mooch used to come into store too as did Ms. Coach Shanahan, nice lady/high end shopper well aware of what she wants without being difficult.
Roger Craig’s daughter Ro played b-ball for Menlo School for 2 years when I was assistant at Paly. he used to wander hallways during games apparently because he couldn’t stand team or coach.
next thing you know Ro transfers to state powerhouse Mitty and becomes D 1 player that romped locals. Watched from opposing bench on night she got 31 at home gym off bench.
Used to be you could see a bunch of Niners running around Menlo Park and Redwood city. With the money they make now they probably live in Atherton or Hillsborough.
Never spoke to him but seen Joe at One Market restaurant and a couple of times at Tadich Grill, always looked like he was having a good time. Don’t know if it’s true, but so many of the Niners seemed to be approachable. The guy I always thought would be great to have a couple of beers with was John Taylor. He always seemed like just a regular guy and IMO, one that should be in the football hall of fame. I imagine drinking with Charles Haley could have been an interesting night out.
My mom showed Joe and his wife a house in Atherton back in the day. She said Jennifer was clearly in charge and Joe spent most of the time marveling at the stove and the hood above it. lol
Saw Joe and Dwight Clark at the Hillsdale mall with my friend Dave (guy next to me in photo) about 2 months after Super Bowl 16. Talked to them for a few minutes, and was amazed at how small Joe was and how big Dwight was. No one was really paying attention to them and they were goofy as all get-out. Told them they brought so much happiness to so many long-suffering fans. They laughed and said, we’re just playing football trying to have a good time.
Met Ronnie Lott and Cedrick Hardman at the Keystone PA with Dave when Kevin’s band opened for the Paul Collins Beat. Bought them a couple beers and gave Ronnie shit for going to the Raiders. Hardman had just retired (i think). Ronnie too was smaller than I thought. Hardman was all shoulders and legs and huge.
ha. Mid 80s I was playing softball in Redwood City for team that practiced over by Niners facility on Roosevelt. Walked through gym once and one look at Hardman cured any thoughts I might have had about playing.
Patrick Walsh, from DeLaSalle and longtime coach at Serra, is one of proponents of flag ball.
Pat’s dad was my Drafting teacher at Serra.
When I worked next to Levitt’s in San Carlos we used to go bowling at Bel Mateo bowl for lunch and would run into Ronnie Lott, Tim McDonald, and Jerry Rice bowling. It was usually pretty empty and they were usually putting down the beers. Good times. Easy to talk when they are having fun.
Yeah, it was a different time when you would see guys everywhere. Saw Rice at the Foster City Black Angus. Square Cow Fun Bar! Dave yelled out, “Nice contract, dude!” RIce was more embarrassed than anything but he did drink the beer he bought him. Nice mellow guy.
I think there will always be football. The difference will be affluent schools dropping it. Less affluent in most of the country will still play. A way out / college to big an opportunity for many, even if the chances are small. My son might not have even bothered with college if not for lacrosse. Played D3.
From 18-22 he figured things out, graduated and has a job in Chicago. It’s not just D1 to the pro but thousands of D2 and D3 programs…
I agree with BF’s line 1 of today’s thread.
They’ve been hard to follow for at least 6 weeks now.
Keep Villar playing, bring some more kids up.
This team needs a collective double shot of Geritol.
They don’t score well (11th in MLB, which is surprisingly high to me) because they don’t hit near as many dingers as last year.
Last year: 241. They’re on course to hit around 185 this year, about a 25% fall. 20th in staff ERA doesn’t help.
They can’t string together enough hits to have big innings except on the rare occasion, and they’re slower than molasses on the bases…
For all the 3 outcomes noise, the thing I can’t abide most are the walks. The Giants walked 7 of punchless Padres last night, and gave up 9 hits to them in 8 innings for an OB of .400. That team has only 1 hitter to worry about period, and they’ve allowed him to burn them in each game. That team however is 2nd NL for ERA.
We saw what happened to Doval the other night. A guy with 100+ heat and 90 mph slider and he walks 3 guys and gets 2 outs in 37 pitches. What good is all the stuff you have if you can’t find the plate with it or at least get close enough to make guys chase?
Everyone but Long walked guys. It is infuriating.
I can’t access this complete article, except for the beginning 7 paragraphs, but this is exactly what I am talking about regarding pitchers today being coddled. A freaking starter today barely goes 5 innings. That’s pathetic. Forget about complete games. lol 😝

If anyone has ESPN Plus and can access the rest of the article, I would love to see the rest of it. I like this guy Passan going back to his Yahoo days as a sports writer. Thank you in advance.

Shea says McGee DFA’d, Littell to IL Yunior Marte returns and as noted in Loo’s lineup Gonzalez back live.
Finally
Yippie kai a motherfuckers
Gonzales back is a plus, should be anyway.
McGoo gone?
Fine. But, I think the turnstile nature of this 26 from game to game is getting to be too much, with no core to hold things together. How can you have cohesion, chemistry in a clubhouse when the guys go in/out of the roster like it’s Friday night at the pub? I wonder if Posey quit a year early because he didn’t like what he saw in 2021?…
I feel your pain…
No. He wanted time with his kids. The reason there’s no cohesion is because Belt, Longo, Wade, Crawfish, and Belt, and Blet, and Belt, and LaStella have all been hurt. 6 starters have barely played.
The rest is bullshit.
Morning, Flappers! 6:20am Sunday morning here, up early to head to Cambodia to do a visa run, still dealing with visa issues. If all goes well, back by mid-afternoon and should be good for 3 months to try one last time to get long-term work permit and resident visa. Always something. First trip out of country in 3 years, thanks to Covid. Enjoy your Saturday evenings, gentlemen (?)….
Good luck on your visa issues Paul, hope it gets resolved for you long term especially..
Hallelujah McGoo is gone!
The daily options and releases should continue!
Bring up Dabovich for the pen, dude has filthy stuff, glad to see Marte back up as well.
Typical Giants moves, one bad outing by Alvarez let’s find an injury, they callup Littell for Alvarez and after 37 pitches of dog shit pitching 4 walks and a hit, gone with a left oblique! Get some young fresh arms up here it would peak my interest more.Rodgers can take a hike too, but Kapler’s bromance with him won’t do it..
Old and slow.
THe curse of the bases loaded, 0 outs.
He shoulda been out, but hey. I’ll take it.
Yazzzzzzzz.
Lame
Belt dragging an anchor with him miraculously scores with no slide!
Yaz of course pops out, man the Giants just completely suck getting runners in with no out, 1 out ,2 outs DOB ( Dead on Bases💀)
SF must lead the league in being unable to score a guy from 2nd with a base hit to the OF…
And we DO lead the league in not fielding grounders.
Belt yikes.
Can’t even reach the track.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Well, took ’em 3 games to not throw Manny spank-me sliders.
Rodon and high hard one at 98 thing of beauty.
Curse of the lead off double.
yazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wastes yet another oppo today.
Yep leadoff double and thenzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Rodon is dealing. Low pitch count. Shocking.
Atleast Rodon is dealing nasty fastballs at 97-99 and decent pitch count at 58..
Unbelievable how inept this team is at hitting the ball.
Yazzzzzzzzzzz with his 3rd popup.
Right now they couldn’t score in a whorehouse..
Like the Rams dumping Jeff Fisher, I expected the Padres to get better dumping THE TINGLER and hiring Melvin.
It doesn’t get any better than this . . .
Someone is due. Everyone is due.
Yessssssssssssssss!!!!
Wilmet!
Wilmet!
MR.Tingler shocks the padres with that 2 run shot!!
We are the slowest team in the league. And the includes every beer league softball team.
Fuck Belt. DFA him. SO fucking tired of this half-assed gimpy lame fucking garbage.
A horse is a horse of course of course and everyone loves a horse of course especially when it’s the famous Mr.ED!!!!
As usual Belt pulls up lame like a horse 🐎 10 days minimum are shoot him?
They’d better send Rodon out there.
Villar looking a little overmatched these days.
When was the last time they called up a guy and he came out blasting?
McCovey?
lulz
WIll Clark
Oh Call up. Buster.
Buster just 2-17 when called up in 2009…
Boy, this guy had a rough nickname…

Could of sworn I heard the Fox announcer say Villar was a 1st rd pick number 11 overall in 2018?
In reality he was a 11th rd pick in 2018! Do your homework chump..
Z gonna be gettin lotsa calls for Rodon…
20 in a row. Wow. Auditioning for the deadline.
Or a new deal, no?
The Craw and Belt signings were bad. They seemed like reasonable signings at the time.
How could he not have signed them? Bill Walsh had Super Bowl cred when he made harsh decisions, and none of his calls were as brutal as letting those two go would have been. The best free agents were at short and first. I’m not a believer in the Zaidi had his hands tied by ownership theory. He was constrained by history and an amazing 107 win season that Crawford and Belt had a huge hand in.
whoosh and the message is delivered by rodon. that is how it’s done.
Alright Rodon, a complete game!
Masterpiece by Rodon firing 98 still at the end for a CG!!!
Sweet win. Go Claude go.
Carlos Rodon will be having some SD spumoni cake tonight!!
Loo, maybe Pablo?
Good one, Mac!
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=sandopa01&t=b&year=2008
wow nice call Mac. After that first 0-3 game (with sac fly rbi) he had 9 game hitting streak where he went 15-33.
Thanks Loo. didn’t realize Pablo started off Giants career like that.
Neither did I…
Trade Rodon for some hitters before he needs a TJ before the trade deadline.
He gone FA $ next year anyway…
Money isn’t Giants problem, talent is, right?
why not spring for him and redo contract? Guy is beast. Having 2 like that at top of rotation would be awesome.
Parting gift for Brandon Belt, a hospital wing named after him..
The Cap’n Crutch wing?
My daughter is in town (in OC) and I watched the game. Finally a win. LOVE it Rondon called people out and then kicked ASS!
As an aside…Karros announcing on fox.. He knew it was going to be close as the ball flashed by when belt 1/2 way to 1st. Bummer belt likely hurt again but funny none the less..
