A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Can We Do This?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 10, 2022

You know, with Rondon and Webb we really do stand a chance to make the post season. Disco is gone (thankfully) and Wood still needs to recapture what he once had. And goddammit Cobb really does have great stuff. I had counted on Matt Boyd to help this year and I’m not giving up on him yet and Junis is serviceable if he can get healthy.

I dunno, I woke up unusually positive today.

Could our starting pitching get us to the post season?

I’m totally on board with making a solid Wild Card run with the SP with one condition….If the hitting stays as is and Longo and Belt are out of touch leaving the heavy hitting to Joc the answer goes to NO.

I also like Cobb. I think IF we are in post season we still have great chance. If we trade for a very good middle IF who can hit we make it. ONE good hitter changes things. Even losing what is it 15/20 we are still in the WC chase. As painful as it is now they will improve just because we are not as bad as were are currently playing.

And as a flyer, we should trade for Soler. Miami isn’t keeping him, he isn’t a hot commodity,

Top of my wish list for this offseason? Trea Turner!!

Junis is more than serviceable before he got hurt, he was 4-1 and an ERA of 2,62 096 whip with batters only hitting .205 against him.If he comes back strong after the A/S break that’s a huge bonus..

Had to laugh about Karros ripping the Giants for batting Flores third, then eating crow when Flores hit the 2 run bomb to win it for Rodon, who was lights out in his masterpiece, still hitting 97-98 in the 9th, quite impressive, and deserved the win and not be Cained for a change..

    • Flavor said, on July 10, 2022 at 12:57 pm

Junis is serviceable. If you think that small sample size is what we’re going to get from him all year, well, go look at his career stats and get a reality check.

All I ask is that on September 1 they are still within 3 games of the WC. Late season baseball rooting for a non-contender is unwatchable, with or without bunts, steals, shifts etc.

  9. James said, on July 10, 2022 at 12:05 pm

The best Karros moment came when he criticized the shift, citing the missing “athleticism” it contributed to. Moments later, Wilmer, ranging over to straightaway short, makes the backhanded, twisting one hope throw for the out.

I don’t think we have much of a chance on making the playoffs. As the season goes on I can see more fatigue and tired arms. If our starters can do anything remotely like Rondon’s last game then maybe. Anything is possible I guess.

  11. willedav said, on July 10, 2022 at 12:20 pm

Um, with lineup like that, pitching would have to carry them. Don’t think there’s enough myself.
Someone will have to step up like Wilmet did and hit ball out of ballpark.

  12. willedav said, on July 10, 2022 at 12:32 pm

Flav that’s funny you woke up positive–when I took morning walk I felt exact opposite. If Z took same approach to upcoming FAs and signed none of them (Turner Bell Bogaerts etc.) to IF and ran Estrada Villar LaStella Craw and maybe Wilson along with Flores and Ruf, plus let Rodon and Pederson get away, Giants muddle through 2023 like this one hovering around .500 and continue to bore. Til top prospects show up 2024, maybe while trying to reload SPs every year with hits and misses.

  13. James said, on July 10, 2022 at 12:49 pm

I’m one of the biggest apologists for the current regime, but one actual miscalculation (as opposed to injury or major unexpected decline in production) they might have avoided is Yaz. Between his 2020 and 2021 splits, you’d probably want to rely on the latter. He’s the reason Austin Wynns is our DH today. Austin Wynns should never, ever be your DH.

    • Flavor said, on July 10, 2022 at 12:58 pm

it’s funny because it seems like half their hitters are DH’s. You’d think with that list to choose from you’d come up with something better than……Wynns.

  14. willedav said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:00 pm

Giants still sit 9th NL in ERA. Not high enough to carry team that is 10th NL in slugging 9th in OPS. Not to mention all the defensive shortcomings that have them near bottom of all baseball.
Karros was so awful I shut sound off and listened to Wayne Shorter tunes, with Art Blakey Messengers and his 60s blue note stuff as leader. Worked out just fine.

  15. mrsprtdude said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:06 pm

    100% re Yaz
Never say never but drafting Bart looking like a bust. Expectation for college guy at # 2 pick in the nation is all star level. Serviceable player is a low bar, and he is a long way from serviceable. In December he will be 26. His struggles are what you expect from a HS draftee who would be 22 now…

A dominant and talented performance lifted our spirits regarding the Giants. Rodon put some energy into the dugout. Hopefully it carries over.

    Go Giants!

  18. willedav said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:35 pm

ha good to have Estrada back!

  19. snarkk said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:42 pm

Giants are not NLCS material without major roster overhaul, giving up substantial “prospects”.
    Not going to happen.
Name one hitter on this 26 that is a real, consistent threat at the plate. Joc. That’s it.
And, he basically isn’t allowed to hit against lefties.
And, he’s a one year rental.
The “sore core” have to come together and be healthy/productive in the Stretch of the season for this team to have a shot.
Like the Dubs core came together at the end of their season, and start of the playoffs. That seems like a long shot right now.
At present, they don’t look like a WC team to me.
Villar is a big boy. Early Villar looks to have potential to take over 3rd for, what’s his name — the guy who is there once in a while between regular injuries…

  20. willedav said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:52 pm

Yaz imo is part of problem, not the solution. At this point I’d sell him off and let Slater play CF everyday. Fill in corners with Wade and Gonzalez Joc.

  21. willedav said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:54 pm

Not gonna throw fastballs by Wilmet.

  22. Macdog said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:55 pm

    Wilmet!

  23. zumiee said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:55 pm

Giants only have a three-day break for the All-Star game this year. I like that. It’s like the old days. The four-day break is too long.

    • snarkk said, on July 10, 2022 at 1:56 pm

The Pen could use a week off, and two new arms.
Since they DFA’d McGoo, they can DFA Tyler, too…

Maybe Rodon goosed the team energy yesterday?
Up 4-0, they need to add on.
    HRs back, they’re in bidness.
    No HRs, no bueno offense…

    • djloo27 said, on July 10, 2022 at 2:40 pm

I think it’s very possible about Rodon, Snarkk…

  26. snarkk said, on July 10, 2022 at 2:15 pm

    Adding on !

    • snarkk said, on July 10, 2022 at 2:20 pm

      And on.
Knock me over with a feather. 7-0 bonanza of runs !

Good couple innings to actually sit down and watch after tiring travel day back home from being out there yday and family insisting on a 1:30 am IHOP stop. Plus pitching last year got us to a first round five game series with a much more effective offense last year. This is the most punch this lineup has shown in a couple of weeks and nothing close to last year. So don’t think this staff can save us from weak hitters. Plus we are beating up a below average starter today so today is more of a mirage than really an effective competitive baseball lineup.

  28. Macdog said, on July 10, 2022 at 2:21 pm

What’s that, 3 straight hits with a RISP? Who are these guys wearing Giants unis today?

    • willedav said, on July 10, 2022 at 2:26 pm

      Lulz.

    • snarkk said, on July 10, 2022 at 2:33 pm

It’s nice to find an oasis of runs in a desert of offensive failure the last 3 or more weeks.
      Could be a mirage …

  31. unca_chuck said, on July 10, 2022 at 3:37 pm

Hoooooooo! See? There’s a game you can call 7 strong innings. Not 5. Not 6. 7 strong. Anything under 7 and you didn’t pitch strong or excellent or great. .

  32. Macdog said, on July 10, 2022 at 4:07 pm

It wouldn’t be a Giants game without a reliever giving up a walk with a 12-0 lead in the 9th.

  33. alleykat69 said, on July 10, 2022 at 4:09 pm

    Mr.Ed have a day! 4-6 2 bombs 4RBI’s
Send a note to Eric Karros telling him to fuck off for dishing me chump..

    Two in a row!

  35. snarkk said, on July 10, 2022 at 4:46 pm

BTW, this stuff about position players pitching late in blowouts is getting really old.
Bad look all around. You’re paying good money to see that? MLB office should tell the teams unofficially to knock it off.
Maybe they have. I don’t remember in the “old days” that happening very much. Now, it’s happening all the time…

  36. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on July 10, 2022 at 6:20 pm

Agree about the pitching, 4-man rotation of Rodon Webb Wood and Cobb is post-season ready. I’d take that rotation into the NLDS every day. On the other hand, at this point, current starting position player lineup is not post-season ready (despite nice blowout today). There is still time if Z/Harris choose to work some deadline drama, although not sure there’s much that can be done adding good hitters in the next few weeks. I guess how the team overall performs the rest of July will determine the direction at the deadline.

  37. alleykat69 said, on July 10, 2022 at 6:32 pm

Rodon&Webb both snubbed for an A/S reserve spots! Just another bend over for the Giants by MLB..
Screw it anyway, get your rest it’s a clown show event anyway.
And speaking of a Dipshit Imbecile, the Commish Manfred decides to go and add 2 legendary fossils in Caberá (AL) and Pujols ( NL) as legendary picks wtf 😳 taking up extra roster spots for a stupid curtain call scenario?
Manfred has to go, he’s destroying what ever integrity is left in the game!

    • snarkk said, on July 10, 2022 at 7:28 pm

One of them might get selected after the usual injuries beg off from coming…

I admit, I have no clue what he’s doing or what that means.
But, if it helps Yaz pull up his average from the basement, I’m all for it…
