Shades of 2010/2012/2014
Sorry for the late thread. I got up at 2am to watch The Open and I needed a nap.
Anyway, that’s how we did it back in the Championship years. Fun to get a whiff of that again.

Got up at 2 AM to watch golf? People usually put golf on at 2 AM if they’re needing help getting to sleep. 🙂
Nah zum, If I have trouble sleeping I just flip on pretty much any Beatles tune and I fall fast asleep immediately 🙂
It was irritating watching the Cards blow a 6-run lead to the Dodgers.
But….the more I thought about it, I had to admit that it’s more helpful to the Giants if the Dodgers beat the Cards.
No doubt, Zum.
Checking the standings feels like something from the past…

Regarding what Willie posted about the Royals on the last thread…..one of the Royals’ un-vaxxed players said he would get vaxxed if the Royals were a playoff team. Wow! As a GM I’d be very tempted just to DFA him right there. I don’t know if he’s one of their better players or not, because I just can’t remember anything about that team, other than Perez the catcher.
“Our team sucks, so I don’t see a problem with missing those games in Toronto.” Such a winning attitude.
10 (!) players. It doesn’t surprise me, though. With the amount of white players in baseball, a certain amount of them are going to be conservative politically and/or culturally, and the stats show that the vast majority of the counties with the highest death rates from Covid now in the U.S. are counties that Trump won in the last election. Those counties have low vax rates.
One of them is Benintendi right? This is guy who could wind up on contender. Suppose that team has to go Toronto at some point in regular season or even worse would have to go there for playoff game or two?
Was just weird reading through the twitter feed, as Baggs and those who supported what he said “failure of leadership”) took lot of heat and blowback.
The average price of an apartment in Manhattan is now over $5,000.00.
Where do people get this kind of money?
Most rich people inherited their wealth. It’s “old money.” There are many people who get wealth from their own efforts, but there are a lot of “trust-fund” people out there.
Sean Lennon is a cool guy, and has made some good musical recordings, but what would it be like to inherit millions of dollars? Paul McCartney’s son James doesn’t strike me as Mr. Ambition.
Hard to believe little Sean is in his late 40’s.
Met Julian in LV 30 some years ago.
Nice as could be…
I have a couple of Julian’s albums. They’re good. So sad that John never got to see Julian have some success in the music business. And, of course, so sad for Julian to lose his dad so young.
Sean Lennon is touring with Les Claypool (of Primus). I’d love to see that.
The number of daily Covid deaths has been going up again, following (so far) that pattern of the last 3 years of the numbers going much lower in the middle of the summer, and then starting to rise as the calendar heads to Fall.
2/3 of the nation so far has gotten vaxxed at all. But only 47% has gotten vaxxed AND boosted.
This Royals blogger goes off on the unvaxxed Royals:
https://www.royalsreview.com/2022/7/14/23212926/the-royals-vaccination-mess-reveals-the-team-as-something-worse-than-bad-a-farce
The 47-42 Blue Jays (who just fired their manager (!)) get to play 4 games vs. a much-depleted Royals team. That’s got to grind some execs and players from other AL teams trying to get a playoff spot.
That firing of the Blue Jays manager is a reminder to all MLB managers how no manager is truly safe from getting fired. What if the Dodgers and/or Yankees don’t win the World Series this season? Roberts and Boone could be on the outs.
Roberts has done very little with what should be an unbeatable team with oodles of talent. You could say the same for Boone as well but I don;t know the Yanks as much as the Dogs.
The video for Julian’s song “Saltwater” is from 1991, but it’s eerie how the video depicts, in a kind of dystopian way, people walking through a city while wearing medical masks. It’s downright prophetic.
Zum that was good thread from Royals blogger guy, thanks. Also interestingly enough in the comments, one guy lamented that with all the buyer teams in AL East, it diminishes chances one of them would take on Merrifield or Benintendi (or other non vaxed guys) because they’d have to sit out any future games at Toronto.
Yeah, it does a good job of comparing the Royals to the White Sox, who have a very high rate of vaccination on their team. The White Sox made it a priority throughout their organization, and the Royals not so much.
The Mariners and Angels got into a stupid brawl a couple of weeks ago, and……the Mariners are 10-0 since the brawl.
Stupidity tied to so much winning.
will be interesting to see if Giants can build off momentum (does that still exist?) of couple feel good Ws, or stay on .500 win a couple/lose a couple plane. After AS break they have 4 in LA, then play them again for 4 here after series with AZ (road) and Cubs (4 at home). Cubs series would end just before deadline.
Maybe it was something that bound that team together and they had different players from different orgs all throughout their lineup including Carlos Santana late from the Royals…
U.S. Covid deaths:
July 13, 2021: 432
July 13, 2022: 882
I’m going to go out on a limb and say there are some Giants fans will never go back to the ballpark. They are finished with being around big crowds of strangers.
Some player in MLB needs to use the beginning of the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter” as their walk-up music. It would be epic.
Time for flavor to ketch another nap 😴
It’s associated too much with the Manson family and Tate–LaBianca murders. As stupid as this commissioner is, I don’t see that happening any time soon. Great song though!
KC Royal players smh that they’re so stupid . . . Exceeded only by the owner’s moronic approval. Side Note: I must be old, as I have come full circle on free agency. To think I once supported Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally’s free agency in 1975, and the subsequent adept piece of negotiation by Marvin Miller, the head of the Players’ Association, whom won the players the 1976 free agency contract . . . Sheesh, I hate what the players and owners have done to the game today.
Funny thing is, it’s about a fucking slide.
Giants claim another Rodon,Angel Rodon from the Cardinals.RHP did pitch effectively in brief appearances with Cards.Giants had a open spot with the release of McGoo. Going to AAA for now, he could be used as a long reliever, spot opener, only 24 that’s a postive, like the Z pickup here adding more depth to a pen that could use it eventually..
Ivana Trump (73) found dead in her apartment…
good. 1 down. Hopefully more to come.
What you said . . . If there’s a God, hopefully the rest are struck by lightening at the funeral.
Guess you won’t be giving the eulogy…
What would the world be like without “The Donald.”
Hah!!! Now that made me laugh!! Fuck ’em all!!!
Thinking about McGee reminds me of opening intro by Cannonball Adderley to live in studio version of Joe Zawinul’s great Mercy Mercy. “you know, sometimes we are not prepared for adversity.”
The guy saved 31 games last year, pitched 59 innings K’d 58 walked only 10. WHIP was 0.90 and he only gave up 44 hits in those 59 innings worked.
Now he’s toast, and Alvarez other LHP pen mainstay is on 60 day IL with elbow problem.
Like Cannon said, Z is just “caught short.”.
Cool Hand Luke also used that expression when asking permission to take a roadside leak…
Heyman says unvaxxed Benintendi now off Yanks wish list.
Yaz a cheaper solution says me…
If we are sniffing the 6th spot, we ain’t dealing.
A local kid who my son knows from the little league was there number one pick a few years ago. He got called up and will start. Nick Prado. Good kid. Hope the KC idiot Hunter Dozier (who plays) 1st gets Wally Pipped!
Pretto? From Mater Dei, the juggernaut of California high school sports.
Pads lost again @Sherpts 8-5. Snell couldn’t get out of 4th inning and walked 6 and soft throwing Crismatt gave up 3 in 6th after Pads had tied game. Giants only 3 behind them, only 1 in loss column..
huh no Wilmet. Scratched from lineup due to calf soreness per mlb.com
“calf tightness.”
Are we the worst conditioned team in the league?
Fuck McCutcheon BTW
That wasn’t a strikeout situation, that was a strikeout the side situation.
like stuff Satchel Paige used to do right? Sometimes he’d tell OFs to sit down, or wave them off the field and then K the side. Giants lose Rodon I’d miss him more than anyone else on entire team.
I also like that story about Mays hitting a double off of Paige. Satch supposedly said, “That’s all for you today, young ‘un.”
and struck out Willie in his next 3 ABs.
yeah that’s a good one. I’m going to throw you 3 pitches and you’re gonna sit down.
I guess we are just old
Slick play by Wade there.
Rodin is definitely bulldogging it out there. Dude is money.
Come on phone. Rodon.
Dude plays with his hair too much
Yeah, what is he hiding in there?
Wade is 5-37 since he came back off IL. 1 double 1 HR. Be great to see him get going.
I was going to ask if anyone knew what was up with Wade. He was such an important part of last year’s success and has oft been cited as a big key to help the team this year. Just doesn’t look comfortable….
Tô me Wade never got on track with assorted injuries this year.A lot like when Yaz got plunked on his hand in the last ST game last year.Never has been the same since..
Wade’s knee is fucked up. They pumped it full of lubricating fluid just to get him back into minor league rehab play. Not cortisone, or the like, but crank grease normally used to soothe osteoarthritis.
Must be Christmas in July.
Shit. Lost my feed. What happened?
Severino needs to get drilled hard next time up!
Shit disturber in the box, stare down at Rodon on the walk!
Fuck this guy!
maybe just strike him out and smile, huh?
Um isn’t that Gonzalez in Rf, not Wade?
not an error but still a dumb play.
YES John that’s Gonzo out there. Tell your boy Kruk too
Bunted
more proof that Yaz is the only guy on the roster who can play RF competently, esp at home. Gonzalez has a good arm; he likes to use it, no matter what, apparently.
Was that Gonzo or Wade who hit into the DP?
Gonzalez
Of course, Yaz can play CF, too.
Yes he can, although I like him better in RF, no doubt best RFer on the team…
the dilemma
Slater’s been doing pretty well, but I still think they need to go out and get a real starting CFer..
I agree. If only Gonzalez could play CF. He’s spent limited time there this year (34 innings); only OF position where he hasn’t committed an error.
How many real starting CFers are there?
https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2022-specialpos_cf-fielding.shtml
well, that Thomas guy on the DBacks looked good while he was here and I see he’s on top of that list. But I’m not going to dig into it. Fact is, the Giants are weak up the middle on bad days and much better when Crawford, Thairo and Yaz are in there. But, of course, that test is just so dated — goes back all the way to when the game was irrationally exciting.
Didn’t take Brebbia long to lose the lead.
Is that a blown hold?
Reds took 2 of 3 from Yanks in Bronx, and came close to a sweep. Barrels got RBI single in 10th tonight to make it 7-4, and that was just barely enough of a margin for the Reds’ lousy bullpen to hang on for the win.
Fuck. Brebbia gucked up again? Missed it. What happened to Rodon? Too many pitches? In 5???
Rodon just threw too many pitches every inning.
Like 7 hits and 3 walks it’s a miracle held the Brewers to 1 run.
Omg do they really need to give that red rhino freak air time?
Haven’t seen that fucker all year.
He was good luck last season.
And like everyone else on IG he’s got his own merch for sale…
Another great play by Crawford, but Wade did a helluva job stretching out as far as he could to catch that good throw — made the difference.
“How many real starting CFers are there?” There are at least some on that list from Baseball Reference, although I see Thairo listed there: total of 2 innings in CF. So, I guess not all *real* starting CFers. I don’t know… wouldn’t have to be Ricky Henderson, I’d settle for the likes of Blanco or Pagan at their best…. even a youngish Kenny Lofton type. But yes, James, I don’t really know who’s out there; just doesn’t seem like it should be impossible to find. And maybe the team doesn’t think it needs one anyway.
Yaz is not an everyday player. He’d make a good platoon with Slater – a better solution than most of that list, as good as Pagan, certainly better than Blanco – but Belt is injured so Wade plays first etc.
“Not an everyday player” …. I guess that’s not quite right, he just shouldn’t bat regularly against lefties.
On this team, Yaz is an everyday player.
Yes, the other day I suggested that was a roster miscalculation.
DId Crawfish give away another out on the bases? MIller seems to think so.
No it was a slow roller to 3rd Crawford was out if he slid are not..
fuck
They should make the big splash and go after Juan Soto!!
two runs, twelve hits, for the brewers. that’s pulp fiction point blank range luck territory.
Who does that remind me of?
huh?
The Giants. Plenty hits, no runs.
oh.
Villar a bit overmatched these days.
Is this our Gott? Didn’t know he ended up in Wisconsin.
“Fouled straight back – he was on it”
Never really understood that one…
Timed it right. Just hit the wrong part of the ball.
Okay, I can live with that…
that’s when you smell the smoke off the bat, they say
Thanks, Xoot…
Same pitch multiple times. same swing. same result. Augh. Any chance a team has poorer numbers with bases loaded than SF??
Go Giants!!
I prefer:He squared it up and hit a HR..
Doval at his 20 pitch danger zone…
Doval reminds me of Felix in decline circa 2002…
Has trouble finishing guys off…
Still a little painful to remember that game 6…..
he needs to pay Romo to teach him once in a while a back door slider works
AAAAAAaaaaaaaaAAAAAAnddddd Estrada got him!
Miller is getting real annoying trying to say what is happening. The play is over and done and he’s still struggling to spit out what occurred,
He hit 50 pitches?
Fuck. Pull him.
maybe the good luck we had last year evening out? Weak as grounder does us in again. Happens to us a LOT!
You know, with the kinda stuff Duval has, it shouldn’t be this difficult this often.
Ghost runner time o joy!
Bunt anyone doubt it why get a guy over to 3 rd with one out
Way to be heads up Yaz!
Yaz stole 3rd one batter too late.
Come on Late Night.
Love it when Wynns is our guy off the bench. Oh Donnie, we miss ya.
There goes another one.
Giants really not good in extra innings. They’re inability to get consistent contact really shows there…
Dog shit.
The difference was Williams is a better pitcher then Doval when it comes to extra innings..
Rodon was gifted two runs against a dominant opponent and threw way too many pitches against some shitty hitters. That was the ballgame.
