A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Giants Lose, Open Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 15, 2022

Tough loss. It’s 2am and I’ve been watching The Open for the last hour. Better get the thread in now. This is easily my favorite major. There’s something methodically hypnotic about watching a ball bound down a hard, brown fairway—this is a place where luck and strategy form the perfect partnership.

Scheffler just banged in a 15 foot birdie.

Anyway, it’s the best.

My only problem with The Open is that can never see the god damned ball!!! Now my oldest kid was born on July 17 during the Open so fond memories sitting at the hospital with a 7 am Sat delivery and spending the whole weekend there watching golf.

Like to see Fitzpatrick with a couple more birdies and get in the weekend hunt at 50-1 for me.

???? Fitz was like 20-1 where did you get 50-1 on him lol

Another pfftt L after winning couple games, same old same old–feel good Ws and then back to reality.

. Yaz is 7-42 in July, Joc is in big slump too. Neither of them have a HR this month. Wade looks awful, Gonzalez 3-19 since he returned. Villar is hitting .229 1 double 1 gift triple 1 HR. 4 hits in 10 innings last night and Doval can’t keep manfred man from scoring.
Just don’t see a spark anywhere to lift them out of .500 doldrums 82-80 ain’t gonna get it done.

  4. willedav said, on July 15, 2022 at 6:51 am

Much as I like Rodon, Burnes outdueled him last night. The bottom order (as James said) guys got to him and the Davis kid AB was the killer. Brewers made the plays in field too.
Bart does look better out there; subbing him out for Wynns getting more and more questionable.

It’s still the British Open to me.

  6. alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2022 at 8:30 am

I can’t even fathom how high a round I would put up at these browned out cow pastures.
Between the knee high weeds, some crazy plant called a gorsh, gorn whatever? and then those bombed out bunkers that are like 15 ft deep, even with my wedge wide open and hit it solid I doubt I get out. They don’t call them HELL BUNKERS for nothing!! I definitely would be pounding extra Guinness out of frustration, but still I love golf and would sure like a crack at te home of golf someday….

  7. unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 9:39 am

I’d just use my putter through the whole place. At least within 100 yards. Roll those fuckers on the hard pan.

  8. unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 9:39 am

The question is, Flav, did you cry when Tiger walked to the 18th green?

  9. snarkk said, on July 15, 2022 at 9:55 am

SF now 13th in MLB attendance.
Some of the decline is Covid and the outrageous pricing, but can’t be all of it.
Not knowing who’s on the field in the home laundry is certainly part of it…

    • Flavor said, on July 15, 2022 at 10:02 am

      Zumiee’s housewives have stopped going.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 10:07 am

It’s pretty sad complaining about pricing when you can get decent seats for $20.00 to $40.00. Sure, the rest is a pain, like parking, but even looking for that right you can save $10.00 to $20.00 by getting to the city early and eating somewhere.

Eat and drink before you go and you can do a game for 2 for under $100.00.

I think it is more about the lack of anyone who is a must-see player. Joc is kinda close, but not nearly enough. Plus, he’s a platoon guy anyway. That and the fact we are not playing well for the last 2 months. I went to one of the Cincy games (Fri night) and it was packed. they drew well that series but I think that was the start of the slide and the drop in attendance.

      • snarkk said, on July 15, 2022 at 9:17 pm

        $16 beers, $50 parking?

  10. alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2022 at 10:10 am

I think a lot of real true fans are pissed off about Kapler’s over analyzing approach. Do you really want to see Belt getting pulled for a PH after he has 3 straight hits? Same with Pederson your best HR slugger getting pulled for Slater in the 5th inning? Losing these bats early are late still effects the production, especially going into extra innings..

    • unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 10:57 am

I don’t think people are thinking that hard about it.

But i can’t stand it when we get to the 9th and we are out of pinch hitters. Mainly quit yanking Belt and Joc. When (no more) Wynns is your fucking option off the bench, you are doomed.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 10:57 am

If they do anything at the deadline, they need a couple reievers and a couple hitters. They don;t have to be great. Just serviceable.

  11. unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 11:46 am

Fucking dump La Stella and hope Longo has a couple good weeks before he breaks down completely. Christ. They really aren’t too too far from being good. They just have too much dead weight.

  12. willedav said, on July 15, 2022 at 12:10 pm

Looking at clip on mlb.com for the cheapo IF hit Doval gave up that brought run in, he hardly lifted his front foot at all when he threw that pitch. Other times he is completely different, raising front leg up to waist level. dunno if he does this for cutter or slider exclusively, but it’s odd his delivery is so different in an inning.

A guy on MCC site suggested Brewers were laying off Rodon slider due to a tell–he leaves glove more open when he throws slider than on fastball. hmmnn have to check that out next start because MIL swung at fewer of them as game went on. Maybe they were just geared up for 98 heat, idk.

    • James said, on July 15, 2022 at 12:24 pm

He didn’t seem to put very many sliders in the strike zone, either. They can’t all drop below the zone, or you can comfortably lay off anything that’s not a fastball and take the consequences.

      • willedav said, on July 15, 2022 at 12:44 pm

good point. what do you think is up with Doval?

      • James said, on July 15, 2022 at 1:00 pm

Doval has a little bit of Hunter Strickland in him. Throws a 100, may as well be 92.

  13. zumiee said, on July 15, 2022 at 12:54 pm

    “Zumiee’s housewives have stopped going.”

There’s something to that. Everything is more expensive because of inflation. People that do their family’s grocery-shopping see it on a weekly basis. They feel less comfortable about spending money on an extravagance like an MLB game. (MLB games didn’t use to be extravagances, but things are what they are now.)

  14. zumiee said, on July 15, 2022 at 1:06 pm

I saw the numbers earlier today comparing the Giants’ W/L record in one-run games in the last two seasons.
I don’t have the stats handy, but if I remember them correctly, the Giants won about 2/3 of their one-run games last season, and have won about 1/3 of their one-run games this season so far.

Kuiper made a reference to not liking the shepherd’s pie one of the ballparks had prepared for the food room for the media, and I had to look up what shepherd’s pie is. I’ve never had it. From the photo and the description, it doesn’t look like something I would like. I’m absolutely not a food snob, but that just didn’t look good.

  17. zumiee said, on July 15, 2022 at 1:37 pm

In the bottom of the tenth, and the ghost runner on second base, Craw flew out to left field, and unproductive out. And K&K said nothing about it being an unproductive out. They obviously feel Craw’s career has earned that kind of treatment from them. Miller and/or Flemming surely said the phrase “unproductive out” on radio.
That’s one of the differences between broadcasters who are ex-players and those who aren’t.
There are positives and negatives to both types of broadcasters.

    • James said, on July 15, 2022 at 2:50 pm

Whatever the motivation, I welcomed the break from a tedious and often hollow criticism. Williams threw him an excellent, wide breaking change-up on the inside corner and followed it with an up and in fastball that Crawford was behind on.

  18. zumiee said, on July 15, 2022 at 1:45 pm

Some of Krukow’s best work this week was describing the dynamics going on when a pitcher almost or does hit a batter in the head. He described very well the thoughts and emotions of both hitter and pitcher.
I think the average fan may wonder why a pitcher doesn’t walk towards the batter and say an apology. As Krukow said, the batter absolutely doesn’t want to hear it, or see the pitcher walking towards him.
The Giants pitcher waited until the inning was over, and signaled an apology towards the guy, who seemed to accept the apology.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 2:58 pm

Asaw that. The guy didn’t look happy about it but he accepted the apology.

  19. unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 1:47 pm

Miller said it on the radio. it’s baffling that when they NEED that run, a) they didn’t try to bunt him over (for the 1,000,000,000th time), and b) they ran Yaz after one was out. Yaz is on 3rd, he scores easily on the fly ball.

    • xoot said, on July 15, 2022 at 2:40 pm

yes and yes. wtf? Is Kapler trying to surprise the opponent by not doing what seems logical?

    • James said, on July 15, 2022 at 3:14 pm

It seemed like Yaz ran on his own when Williams didn’t look at him. There was no way they were going to send him with zero outs, and, if Williams had been paying him any mind, probably not with 1 out, either. As for bunting Crawford, well, Wynns proved that one thing doesn’t always lead to another. I doubt the likelihood Crawford makes one of those hallowed productive outs or gets a hit swinging away is much less than he puts down a successful sacrifice.

      • xoot said, on July 15, 2022 at 5:04 pm

If the pitcher was ignoring Yaz with one out, was he ignoring him with zero? I didn’t notice. But I don’t think Kapler makes the sort of instantaneous in-game adjustments that might have sent Yaz in response to the pitcher’s flaw, or given him the green light to go, based on what he saw with a lead from the middle of the IF.

      • James said, on July 15, 2022 at 5:23 pm

I agree, he probably wasn’t sent on that specific pitch. But he at least had some discretion to go, presumably if he was sure he could make it. Maybe that was relayed to him from the bench, maybe not. I only became aware that Williams was ignoring the runner after the steal.

  20. xoot said, on July 15, 2022 at 2:41 pm

I bet Big Joey Bart drags the Giants’ stat down a lot here.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 2:57 pm

I think he’s all of it. Well, 2010 through 2017 was the dark days of Saebevans tenure.

      • willedav said, on July 15, 2022 at 3:12 pm

well there were a lot of whiffs before Beede. Bart looks better really since he came back. Giants knew there was going to be dropoff from Posey; to me it’s more they haven’t been able to develop guys to cover for what’s happened to Belt Crawford Yaz Ruf and pitching. Dubon Duggar Dickerson J Davis these guys had brief flings with success in AAA and ultimately dumped off for nothing. Ramos isn’t doing well and there isn’t anything else beside Voslers and Krizzzzzans down there.

      • xoot said, on July 15, 2022 at 3:52 pm

Joey’s up to 0.1 WAR now. I think he’s looked fairly promising since he returned, not as good as the first couple weeks of the season, but better than the thereafter leading to his demotion.

    • snarkk said, on July 15, 2022 at 3:13 pm

      Cardinals on top.
Not surprising. They are always bringing up some minor league guy(s) that kill it.

  30. Macdog said, on July 15, 2022 at 9:06 pm

Now that they’re losing, what inning does the parade of pinch-hitters start?

  31. snarkk said, on July 15, 2022 at 9:17 pm

    Absolute ClusterF of an inning.
8 straight runners get on with 2 out.
Wade is playing a position unfamiliar, he hasn’t played there much since back, so makes a bad play, the hounds are set loose.
And, Rodgers? I don’t get him coming in. WTF Kapler? Was Wood tired — he’d been good, they got on with a couple of lucky ones.
As usual, Rodgers gave up the dinks and doinks, hits a guy, walks in a run. Really really tired of his act. Umpires don’t know how to call balls and strikes with him, he can’t get Ks much, which is a problem…

  32. alleykat69 said, on July 15, 2022 at 9:18 pm

From now anytime Rodgers comes in I’m heading directly to the liquor cabinet!
And I will continue to drink until he leaves the game..

    It’s everyone and everywhere.
WTF Villar — Craw was calling for it.
It’s like guys don’t know each other or are playing unfamiliar positions all the time. Why would that be?…

Motherfucker. Went to the movies (The Black Phone, a pretty well done horror flick) and was listening to the 9th inning on the way home. Missed everything but Miller talking about the home runs Bark/Ruf hit. Had to get inside to deal with the dogs, Streameast has failed me, regular TV (fucking dish) is fucked up, and I didn’t get back to the radio in time. Hell of a win. I guess.

But, WTF with Wood? 0 runs on 4.2? When are they gonna McGee Rogers? Mr. Kotter is really struygglling with every pitching decision it seems. Hell of a comeback, and Miller was talking about Hader’s problems recently.

  55. unca_chuck said, on July 15, 2022 at 11:32 pm

Be bnice to see them string together some wins, but the defense and relief pitching is a real shanda right now.
