All Star Time
Anyone care about the all star game tonight? If it weren’t for the dozen or so draftkings teams I put together I can’t imagine caring about it. When I was a kid it was everything. Guys I’d pretty much only seen on baseball cards not only came to life on my tv but they were PLAYING eachother! I was rivited, glued to the screen.
Now, just like everything else in the world, all these players are completely overexposed. My interest in seeing guys I see all the time play a game tonight is…..low.
Was rooting for J-Rod last night. He had a much tougher path to the finals than Soto who cruised. I think the HR Derby should be at night. It was hard to track where the balls were going with natural day time light.
well, um, the ambience of the host venue leaves lot to be desired. Nothing against Opie, but pass on this one.
AS games in 60s were hard fought affairs and guys like Mays played the whole game. Not to mention HOFs like Frank Robinson and Billy Williams got left off NL starting OF.
Baseball was king during the 60’s. I never missed an all-star game. No interest in tonight’s affair.
Haven’t watched since 2002 and everyone knows why. Zzzzz . . .
I remember my Father not liking the all-star games of the major sports except baseball, because he viewed baseball as the most individual of the team sports and he liked seeing, as you said, those baseball card guys come to life for an evening. I did watch as a kid but haven’t paid much attention to it for decades now. Maybe there are kids out there now who feel excited about it, I don’t know….
Kids aren’t excited about baseball. This isn’t a blip.
I don’t even watch highlights of the AS game.
Like others, as a kid I wouldn’t miss it because it was the only chance to see players heard of, but rarely seen, given no interleague play and the rarety of games on TV. Now, it’s a bunch of strikeouts interspersed with an HR or two, and constant churning of players I don’t know.
I’d rather see a Dubs game from a random Tuesday night in February…
What a great description about the baseball cards coming to life. Maybe I’ll catch Joc’s AB, but I’ll likely pass on the game, especially if the telecast turns out to be a lovefest for all things Dogpile and the Latrine.
That is damn good!
Yeah. Giants will be there Thursday anyway for 4 games.
Chavez Ravine. The Latrine of Broken Promises . . .
The AllStar game as a kid was much like your experience Flav…magical was the best description.
Slush said Belt had knee drained but he thought he would be able to play 1b after break. Not fun experience I imagine.
That was from July 17.
He’s repeatedly getting that knee drained. That means something is wrong, needs to be fixed. Either they fix it and he’s done for the season, maybe as a Giant, or he limps on/off the IL most likely for rest of the year…
Oh man the Allstar games from the 60’s-70’s you could not miss from HOF hitters and HOF pitchers it just didn’t get any better. I was glued to the TV. The best of the best were all there and they prided themselves to go all to win!
And the games were just 2hrs-2:30 ! Today that’s 3 innings..
I’ll never forget Reggie Jackson’s1971 jaw dropping HR off the light transformer at Tiger Stadium estimated at 539 ft( still the longest HR ever in an A/S game I believe)and surely would of been farther and out of Tiger Stadium without that Roy Hobbs light transformer..Always been a NL fan but I couldn’t help respecting Reggie, A’s uniform helped being a local team with a guy just starting his prime years of bashing a baseball..
Baseball all star game was the best. I was also riveted. Now? Not at all. Why is it less now? Interleague play, so the leagues were no longer separate. Players wanted to win for their league. The players played hard. Best vs the best. Now I think the 2nd is the over saturation.
As a die hard Giants and NL guy I never saw the greats of the 70’s from the AL, and rarely saw the top NL players either. KTVU maybe had 15 games a year? Giants weren’t good most of the time so they were rarely on game of the week Sat am or Monday night baseball. I watched TWIB for just a glimpse of highlights.
Brett Nettles, Reggie, Yaz etc to name a few. I miss those days…
Yep, when TV games were rare, they held much more fascination. Especially as a kid.
Now, you can see any game, any time, as long as you fork over some cash for MLB network service or whatever.
Familiarity breeds contempt…
I very well remember a day when I was a kid, at home in summer watching a Sat day game “Game of the Week” on TV, circa ’65 or so, at the Latrine. Koufax was pitching, IDK who the opponent was. That crappy B&W shot from behind the plate showed his amazing 12-6 curve ball, time after time. What a marvel. I’ve never forgotten that. Had to be the best curve ball in modern MLB history…
The enthusiasm to follow baseball no matter how my team was doing, that’s what I miss.
Everyone just misses being young.
It wasn’t as great as you think…
Truth!
Yeah it was.
All Star games were about not seeing the Giants’ reps fuck up. The rest of the players were just talented stars my sad sack team didn’t have.
Didn’t Rick Reuschel get shelled? I can’t forget Hammaker’s disastrous outing. It fucked up the rest of his season. Earlier as a kid it was pretty cool seeing the guys that I rarely saw in the AL.
Didn’t go to many A’s games growing up, or even later. Of the 4-5 games i’ve seen there, one was to see Ted Williams managing the Senators, one was to see Jeffrey Leonard playing for the Mariners, one was to go to a game with my brother in law. He brought 3 friends and a pony keg to the Coliseum bleachers. One of my first benders at 11. Good times. He drove mom’s ’67 Galaxie convertible (390 FE). Coming back we were doing 110 the whole way across the San Mateo bridge. Ahh, the 70s.
The rest were freebies. Saw the bash Bros against the Bostons.
Yep, he did. Still remember Chris Brown hitting into a DP to end another one.
Ha, right. after Bobby Bonds’ MVP in the ’73 ASG, most times I was watching these games with dread.
I’ll gladly take the over-saturation that enables me to watch the Giants all season long from the east coast if it means whatever juice is taken away from a once-a-year meaningless exhibition game.
Good point! I want it all though. The nostalgia and the access!!
We want the world
And we want it . . .
NOW!!!!
Is anybody watching this gimmickry?
Anybody else you mean. Yes.
Talking to the pitcher while he pitches was a little more fun that I thought it would be.
Only cause I’m caught up watching “Terminal List” which is badass!
Good to see Gonsolin get lit up like a Christmas tree.
A withering amount of in-game interviews. So a bunch of players can all say the same thing, about how special it is to be in the game. Is it special? Yes, it’s special. How about you? Yes, it’s special. How about you 50 other guys? Yes, it’s special.
Yeah like when they’re asked what’s your favorite cereal ? And they all say Special K..
I enjoyed watching the new Rod Carew whiff on a fastball a foot above the zone.
Joe Davis said we’re all in awe of Ohtani. I think there was some awe originally, but now it’s just accepted what he does. Plus his team is lousy, with Trout as a teammate. The Angles are a non-team. A non-entity.
They were outscored something like 16-2 vs. the Dodgers in a recent two-game series.
Dumpster Divers rejoice!
Is Syndergaard sucking? I haven’t been paying much attention.
The Angels have what, 2 of the best players on the planet in Trout and Ohtani, and two of the best pitchers in Thor and Ohtani, and they are fighting for the cellar with the A’s?
This is why I think getting Soto would be a fool’s errand. We need more than one guy,
Thor’s not terrible he’s just not the same dominant pitcher he use to be.This year 5-7 ERA an even 4.00.
They also have Anthony Rendon who’s no slouch, but he’s out with a fractured hand. Angels have just been sucking along time.Brutal that Trout&Ohtani will never see the playoffs with them..
They may as well dispense with mound visits. “Hey, Kap, here. The ump really didn’t fuck you over on those close pitches. Despite the less than optimal outcomes, don’t resort to the fastball, guys, the slider is still statistically your best bet.”
That baseball glove Nestor Cortes is wearing is really cool. The baddest I’ve ever seen, with the red,white&blue..
That was pretty cool. Damn. Fixed my dishwasher AND my TV today.
I get an extra beer tonight.
big brother of Will Bednar, our first-round pick last year, pitching now. WHIP about 1 at San Jose, for Will.
