Drag Of A Game
Last night was exhibit A of why we need to fleece Al Avila of his best bullpen arms. Give them whatever he wants it doesn’t matter. Everything Avila wants turns to shit.
What a waste of a nice offensive game from us.
Del Mar opens today.
Cogent, prospicience decision by Murray . . . I had no idea the A’s payroll was this low.
Does Zumiee let you sit in his box just above the Del Mar finish line, Flavor?
Did Slater misplay the flyball? I mean I know Gonzalez did cuz Miller was allover that, but it sure sounded like Slater had a chance to get there.
You can see it here Chuck in the video above Pav article…
https://sports.yahoo.com/mookie-betts-reminder-giants-blockbuster-065057231.html
Tigers are right here in Oaktown. Get one or two of them now they could be here for rest of series.
OK, I think the ball beat Slater to the wall and he jumped after it without much hope of getting there.
Here’s another question though: who was calling all the offspeed pitches in the 8th? Leone had shown 97 heat and yet threw ton of sliders before hanging one that got whacked off the wall in CF. Garcia got burned by throwing consecutive changeups to Betts, after walking Mendoza line Bellinger.
at least they were yesterday, oops. Hosting Twins tomorrow.
Last night’s game pretty much showed you everything right and wrong with the team.
A classic microcosm.
Sell anybody but Webb and build a young team already.
We were still supposed to be in the dark ages or whatever we were calling it until last years historic aberration changed the expectations.
Tear it the fuck down…
I agree. You can’t win unless you can play defensive ball. At this level they should have that aspect down. Young or old get rid of the players that can’t play the game.
The Wilderness Years was the other name I couldn’t think of for the era of Giant baseball we thought we were in prior to last season…
Baggs points out major differences btw where Dogs were at time when they acquired Betts, the trade and the contract he signed vs. where Giants are now. The Yahoo headline is dumb.
Dogs had recent history of success and a winning team before he got there; Giants have one winning season since 2016. Their farm was good enough to produce Alex Verdugo and top prospect J Downs to include in deal without hurting them at all. Giants don’t have ML ready OF comp to Verdugo and most of others are in AA ball.
Not to mention taking on Price contract and the 10 yr./$300 mil contract for Betts that Soto and Boras would want to exceed.
Florent Geroux has mounts today at Del Mar, Mike Smith too. Isn’t Smith riding in Haskell at Monmouth this Saturday?
Yes, along with many other top riders who will spend the day there…
yeah, thanks Loo looked it up. Geroux on Cyberknife, Smith on Taiba, Rosario on White Abarrio, Jose Ortiz on Jack Christopher, etc. Have to check that out.
Giants game tomorrow is another one on Fox at 4:15 LA time.
I gave up at 5-0 for shit eye and disappointing performance from Rodon. Why does he throw a down the middle fastball to Freeman first inning at 0-2. Just a shitty pitch call. Is that Wynns call? Then to wake up and see the score and then find out we had the lead!!!
Watching the replay this morning and watch shit ass slider from Leone first to Klay’s Bro and then Jarlin’s back to back shitty change ups. This pen and Rodon had almost four days and they can’t come back throwing their best stuff???
Shut eye lol
GH I like Shit eye better watching the Giants.Getting no hit for 5 innings against a scrub like Mitchell White a number 5 pitcher tells it all that the break did them no good and they sure played like it.Fortunate the pitch count caught up to him and Spicoli,Vesia we’re just as bad as are to let them back in it and even take the lead. But of course are BP gave it up easily.Yeah Garcia can’t throw a strike to Mendoza Bellinger was maddening wtf?( definitely the key moment as he choked 4 straight pitches)even Kap said u have one job to do and you can’t throw strikes on the lefty/lefty matchup? Once Betts came up I knew it was lift off time as Garcia couldn’t get pulled yet..
Wynns put the first inning 0-2 target high and in, at the very corner of the zone. The pitch, of course, was middle middle. Why FB high and tight? Freeman’s statcast spray chart is amazing. He pokes as many doubles down the LF line as down the RF line. Maybe a slider away would’ve been a better choice after brushing him back. Hard to say. Rodon just made a very bad mistake to a very good hitter.
While reading the Athletic, it was noted that the “3 true outcomes” (homers, strikeouts and walks) have gone down in the same season in 17 years (since 2005) … which was the only previous season it had happened in the last 30 years. Interesting article, but what I found really fascinating what this nugget:
“The average pitching staff in 1992 had a strikeout rate like Chi Chi González (5.6 per 9 innings pitched). By two years ago, the average K rate (9.2 per 9 IP) was closing in on Nolan Ryan (9.5).” That’s unfreakingbelievable, except it’s true.
So many pitchers now feature stuff like Ryan’s. This has as much to do with the increase in Ks as any hitting philosophy. As a whole, hitters have undoubtedly gotten quicker, but there’s nothing they can do to compensate fully for the increased velocity they see.
Unless they get one in location they can handle. Rodon threw 96-97 fastballs by Trea Turner and others including Freeman. when he unfortunately put one in the middle of the plate it got hammered over CF wall.
Are hitters of today used to seeing more high velo pitches? Is it more late movement that gets them out?
It’s a general argument. Hey, they did score runs off of Nolan Ryan back in the days of 5 Ks per nine. Whether it’s movement or better specialty pitches, the simple fact that so many pitchers throw 95+ ensures that more hitters end their ABs with a K. They just have less time to adjust.
Ah Frank Mirahmadi calling races at Monmouth. Really enjoyed listening to him at Santa Anita.
Willied, I think it’s the movement getting big league hitters out more often then not.
Last night for example Marte totally locked up Muncy for strike 3 call and he knew it .
The ball started out at his right hip then just the speed and incredible movement brought it back to an inside corner at the knees, it was a thing of beauty.I like Marte he may be green and inconsistent at times( hmm Doval as well) but they both have filthy stuff and are young.
Most of these guys are young and wildly inconsistent. Infuriating.
1. Austin Slater (R) CF
2. Wilmer Flores (R) 2B
3. Darin Ruf (R) 1B
4. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
5. Brandon Belt (L) DH
6. Thairo Estrada (R) SS
7. Yermin Mercedes (R) LF
8. Joey Bart (R) C
9. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
P: Logan Webb (R)
Leading jockey at Santa Anita Juan Hernandez won first race at Del Mar today. Christina Blacker was on hand, plus delightful Andie Biancone in nice yellow print long dress. She was talking to trainer Mark Glatt before 3rd race and his horse Priano won photo finish ridden by Abel Cedillo. Jessica Pyfer won 4th.
i just got featured on tvg (26 second mark)
Awesome! gotta laugh out of Christina Blacker too. well done
Did you catch it live? That was on their national broadcast. That’s my buddies daughter’s hat from a 2016 trip we took down there
They would never suspect your devastating handicapping abilities…
Lol. That’s great.
wow Yermin in LF. Giants this year are 19-10 vs. LHP and will now face 3 in a row. Tyler Anderson followed by Julio Urias tomorrow and then Opie on Sunday. also currently 23-25 vs. +.500 teams.
Sounds like 3 straight bench game sittings for Joc to me sadly ..
Joc hasn’t homered since Woodrow Wilson’s first term…
wow Rispoli finds lane to inside of favorite and wins Oceanside stakes on turf for trainer Phil D’Amato.
Slush said per Ken Rosenthal Brewers signed McGee to ML deal.
Two ABs particularly rankled last night. The Mercedes strike out on a pitch over his head. And Bart’s whiffs on some hittable pitches in his last AB.
Missed opportunities.
Toronto is leading Boston 27-3 in the 6th inning.
For real…
Babe Parilli benched…
Didn’t Gino Cappeletti lead AFL in scoring as receiver and PK for Pats?
The only Cappelletti I knew was the Penn St RB John. Went to the Rams.
Canadian football starting early?
We bat out of order?
Oh boy. Webb is wobbly.
Webb isn’t even fucking close.
Jesus Webb is more wild then his rookie year.
Can’t believe how many shit breaking balls he’s thrown, can’t trust his FB?
Why is Webb so far to the left of the rubber. ALL his misses are left of the plate.
Clown show, Fuck fuck fuck. This is incredibly bad. 4 outs, 4 walks, 2 hits, 1 error.
Surprised Mookie didn’t go to 2nd.
60 pitches, but only 1 run!!!
Ground hog day all over.4 freaking walks for Webb out of 9 batters, and of course the obligatory error by Mercedes, as the worse defense in the league continues their carny act..
wtf is Mercedes in LF? Why (as Slusser suggested) is Webb pitching when Cobb and Wood are more rested?
Don’t argue with the AI.
Because they’re keeping Belt off the field. Or are you asking why is Mercedes playing at all?
BTW, it’s not technically AI the baseball stats nerds are exploiting. You build statistical models, they get “trained” as you add more data. It’s not quite the same thing as attempting to build sentient robots. Admittedly, machine learning doesn’t have the same name recognition.
I think my question’s clear. And AI’s such a great target. I guess it’s metonymic excess. I apologize.
I also apologize, it’s just that when “creativity” is at such a premium in a baseball manager, you never know.
Is Slusser suggesting Webb is exhausted? I’m sure if Webb had sucked on Saturday she’d point out how he was too strong, diminishing the sink on the sinker. Some people are paid to be full of shit.
Are they hiring?
I just have a compulsion about citing sources. Slusser’s suggesting that Webb got no AS break while everyone else did and that may be related to his struggles. Ask the AI about it.
So, what was your opening word last night?
I thought I heard Webb was going up to Tahoe for his break? Why would he be exhausted? Unless he lost a bundle playing craps, are had a sore elbow from the slot machines..
Webb is pitching tonight on his regular rotating schedule, without any EXTRA rest. Wood and Cobb both got an extra rest day (or two) becz of the break. Why not give Webb one extra? He’d pitch in this series. Etc.
Why give him the extra day’s rest? Why bring it up as if it had anything to do with his performance? He threw 88 pitches on Sunday and had his regular 4 days’ rest. Maybe it was somehow a physical thing, the all star break coming precisely at the right time Logan desperately needed an extra day or two? Or was it psychological?
Could of started Villar in LF easily over Mercedes’, but why would Kappy get creative?
If Logan Webb was born 100 years ago he might’ve been one of the Little Rascals…
He does kinda give off that Jackie Cooper vibe.
Huh. Some actual defense.
Well, the Merc did drive in our only run.
Born DH and occasional position player off the bench.
He ain’t even that. This is our fucking K-Mart lineup.
We got to hit this stiff at some [point.
Mufucker is 10-1?
He’ll be terrible again next year. This year’s Randy Jones Award winner.
Has Kruk ever seen an opposite field hit that wasn’t an intentional act, a hopeful sign that the game he grew up with and still loves may not be dead yet?
Fleming is going with the Duane Kuiper school of broadcasting. A bloop reached the warning track and a popup was medium deep LF.
Bet if Mercedes smelled his ass it wouldn’t smell as well his bat.,
Oh boy. Is it a wonderful day in the neighborhood?
It has been 30 of the 42 days he’s shown up, but no guarantees.
Make that 31 of 43.
According to clueless Fleming ,Rodgers is still as good as last year lol .
Some of his stupid stuff just gets old and stall to me quickly..
He actually has not been that far off from last year. He gave up 7 earned in 1/3 of an inning early in the year due to some crap defense and bad luck. It’s really distorted his stats.
Time for the bomberooski.
Roberts will get roasted if Vesia gives up runs again.
How fucking slow is Villar? God, that’s terrible. Have we cornered the market on slow guys?
Aye carumba.
This shit gets so old.
Can’t spell Wade without an E.
Fucking bellinger. Start drilling these fuckers.
I’m gratified that Sam Long has learned his lesson not to throw an 0-2 hanging curveball to a struggling hitter. I’m sure it will pay off for many years to come.
Fuck. I nearly smashed my remote against the wall when I heard that.
Screw this team ! Ballgame
Grandslam to a useless Bellinger down 0-2 and he throws a hanging curve wtf I’m done with freaking useless team, of horseshit, donkey dick, cesspool of toxic waste, with their asses so far up where no sun will shine!!!
I concur.
The biggest stiff on their team repeatedly kills us.
Haven’t heard that story 4,000 times.
fuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuckfuckfuckfucfuck
When does football season start???
https://howmanydaysuntil.center/nfl-kickoff/
Didn’t realize Gino Cappelletti died just couple months ago. he led league (AFL) in scoring 5 times. and won MVP for old Boston Patriots of the 60s.
Wonder if Wade Jr. is part of long term plan to take Belt’s spot next year as LH hitting and throwing 1b. Such a different skill set from corner OF, fielding ground balls, throw to pitcher covering, et al. Not as easy as it looks.
Wade fields that cleanly and gets the second out of inning there, K of Lux ends it. Doesn’t excuse Long hitting Lamb or the HR on 0-2 count, but the error helped Dogs extend the inning. Not to mention SF getting 2 runners on in 8th and 9th and failing to score.
Time to wrap up Joc and Rodon into nice trade packages. Unless we win these next 2.
It’s time to cut bait.
Funny thing is, it makes Roberts look like a genius for letting Bellinger (aka Cody Mendoza) hit off LHP. He had been 5-73 vs. SF in last 2 years. roberts said “you just got to keep running guys like that out there and believe that it’s going to turn”, lol.
KC LB Jim Lynch died. 76. Part of that great 1970 championship team and that awesome defense.
All time greatest players from the 60’s that are still alive:
Willie Mays
Sandy Koufax
Jim Brown
Dick Butkus
Oscar Robertson
Bill Russell
Bobby Orr
Bobby Hull
Ditka
I tried to go absolute top of the line off the top of my head.
Ditka not quite in that pantheon.
If I went beyond 2 per sport Marichal is next.
60’s Alcindor was 99% college…
Looked up Bobby Orr and he really didn’t go off the charts crazy till the early 70’s.
I’m done with this stupid game…
Hah! Bill Walton was too late as well . I ha d baby hill in my head
Another recent death of a former Giant who they horrifically acquired straight up for Jose Pagan…
Wasn’t all bad yesterday–Phils and Cards both lost, to Cubs and Reds respectively. After first, Webb was fine.
Baggs twitter account has long thread where he asked Belt after game about Kap hitting for him late game with Villar. As you can imagine, Belt didn’t care for it and thought he was man for the job (Slush had thread on this too). Said he realized why it was done and thought he could do more at plate and ultimately change Kap’s mind. He is hitting .135 off LHP this season as was mentioned.
Don’t care for Kapler’s constant over analyzing player switching out.Not only you take out the veteran Belt( don’t blame him for being pissed, and he’s probably not alone)bat for the rookie, you lose his defense on the play that Wade butchered which they would of got out of the inning not scored upon..
And no way is Wade a 1st base option next year, he’s strictly an OF/DH only.
1st base will be another black hole to fill next year..
Lineup I saw today per Pavs has Belt back in there vs. Urias (LHP) at 1b, Gonzalez in RF Yermin in LF.
Slater CF
Flores 2b
Ruf DH
Longoria 3b
Belt 1b
Estrada SS
Mercedes LF
Gonzalez RF
Bart C
Wood P
AIiiiieeee
This LU could win today, or get crushed. That’s a .500 squad at work against a team with vastly superior talent.
Let’s get real.
This team, even if somehow it limps into a WC spot, has a snowball’s chance of going anywhere in the post-season. Add a Pen arm (Rosenthal) or two and a decent bat before Aug 1 — still not enough.
Next season, we need to see the farm system step up with some players on the big club, else I’m calling the alleged farm system upgrade a mirage. And, the team’s Seditionist ownership better open the wallet to get some real hitters in here.
If middle of the MLB pack payroll, and $90 million+ in spending below LA’s base payroll is the rule going forward, that isn’t going to get much done. 3 in 5 looks looks more and more like hagiography as the seasons pass…
https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/
Which happens first?
Bart gets above the Mendoza line or Rwanda lands a spacecraft on Mars?
Drumpf gets through one day without lying at least once?…
Loo, how about this for a comp? Max Muncy, at .155. slash line .311/.306 for OPS of .617
Consistent if nothing else. 2-23, 5-46 in July.
.160 at home, .151 on road. 9 HRs, 3 more than Bart, who has 120 less ABs.
Currently in last year of 3yr deal for $26 mil.
For what it’s worth:
After WWII, for a decade or so: Ks per game were in the 3s – 4s
In the 60’s – ’70s when I was a kid paying attention to MLB: Ks were in the 4s – 5s per game.
Now, in the decade since SF won the WS in 2010: Ks are up from the high 6s to the mid to high 8s per game
So, Ks per game have basically doubled since the early post WWII period, and up over 50% since baseball’s “Golden Age”.
Also:
Balls in Play (BIP), meaning ABs where the defense must confront a batted ball (nic HRs and Ks), have gone in the post WWII period for around 29-31, to in the last 5 years in the 23-24 range, basically a 25% fall off.
If you are a fan of the game where the ball is put in play and the defensive players make a play or attempt to make a play on it, and I am one of those, then the game is definitely more boring than it used to be…
https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/bat.shtml
During the golden age, most of the time, I listened to the games. There was only so much detail Lon Simmons could provide about that ground ball to short. You can only see defensive plays completely unfold when you’re at the game, although a good seat also makes a difference. I go to about 7-8 games a year.
in an Elizabeth Tallent shortstory, a child is in the back seat of a car driving through the desert at night with the radio tuned to a baseball game. A jackrabbit bounces into the sage like a grounder to short.
Flavien Prat takes over Monmouth, wow.
Frankly the less balls put in play against our defense the better.
Xoot your post reminds me of this.
Decent speed, surprising power.
yeah, whatta chicks who never faced a fastball know?
Jesus. Wilbur need to do a lap for swinging at that.
I think the Giants City Connect unis should’ve been all black.
Belt don’t look very comfortable out there.
turrible movie, Forrest Gump.
