A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

From 107 to 77?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 28, 2022

So who goes at the trade deadline? Rodon, Pederson, Yaz and maybe Doval? I wonder if Z will try to package LaStella’s terrible contract into any deal he makes. Buckle up boys, this could happen fast and furious.

Either that or Z sits on his hands when he finds out he’s got no takers for those guys.

    Sorry, I couldn’t resist . . . https://youtu.be/gtTV9tZeRD4

That was fun. 77 Sunset Strip was a must see show in our house. Great period show for Hollywood.

      • blade3colorado said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:29 am

Yes, same in our house. However, more affected by Tony Dow passing away at 77. I grew up in a dysfunctional home. Consequently, Leave It To Beaver was my benchmark for happiness. Back then, I always wondered if this was a true life depiction or pure fantasy. Turned out to be mostly fantasy, at least judging by my friends families, which were just as dysfunctional as mine. lol

      • Winder said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:37 am

Yep. Just like the Ozzie and Harriet show the Beev’s family looked to good to be true.

As we enter, what, the disgusted days of summer? I hope whatever move(s) Zaidi makes is to make the remainder of this year more competitive, and with next year in mind.

Looking at our farm system, I’m not seeing (m)any difference makers for 2023, hopefully I’m wrong.
My prospect long shot, Carter Williams, was sent back to San Jose from Eugene in June. Probably sent down to give Najee Gaskins a look and he wasn’t really doing much at high A. Since being sent down he’s hit 10 doubles, 1 triple and 7 HRs. His line for the low A team is .408/.490/.672 with a 1.162 OPS. I hope he’s not part of a package and I know he’s a huge long shot, but I’m really rooting for the guy.

    • unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2022 at 7:51 am

I’d keep Doval. He has electric stuff.

Bozo, this year is a wash. As is next.

      • djloo27 said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:08 am

Not blown away by Doval but definitely keep him.
They’ll have plenty of takers for Rodon.
        The others, who knows?

      • Bozo said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:49 am

If there isn’t an answer to this year’s current collapse and no expectations for next year, Harris and Zaidi should be fired. The stated goal was to field a competitive team late into the season, while building within. It was not supposed to be a long term rebuild and having just one winning season out of five.
Sabean was fired after going 2 1/2 losing seasons and he won us three championships.

  4. willedav said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:14 am

Most depressing thing about last few games (not counting allowing Melancon to get saves) is that watching the DBacks young core was so much more interesting than any Giants players not named Estrada.
They have good farm and lot to look forward to for their fans.

    • Winder said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:19 am

Curious to see how our farm is rated now. At the start of the season I believe we were in the top 10.

  5. willedav said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:21 am

Flores could be one of those guys to spark post season run for anyone, like Howie Kendrick did for Nats or Eddie Rosario did for ATL vs. Dogs. Solid clubhouse guy (and leader among SF latin ballplayers) who can hit and fill in at different IF spots if needed.

  6. alleykat69 said, on July 28, 2022 at 8:22 am

Guys like Doval, Santos,Marte&hopefully RJ Dabovich who they should callup are the young fire ballers they need to keep but they need to develop are trade for some LHP relievers for sure..

Nobody is taking LaStella know teams are that stupid..

    • Flavor said, on July 28, 2022 at 9:33 am

Well they would take him if it meant they had to give up less in prospects.

  7. unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2022 at 10:07 am

Bozo, the front office is waiting for their picks to make their way through the minors. No regime change before then. I’m sure Charlie, Greg, and whatever fucking Johnsons are minding the store don’t really give a shit, but we are looking now at 2024 or even 2025 to be competitive.

They all lost a season of competitive ball due to COVID so that fucked up their plans somewhat.

There will be an uproar as 2023 and 2024 are really bad penny years, but them’s the cards. Why throw money at a shitty team? If they can get 2 solid starters and a couple relievers out of the crop of pitchers they have, and a few position players through the farm and on the field by mid 2024, then they can look to spend in 2025.

Last year (and COVID) really did set the team back a couple years in the development of the team.

    • Bozo said, on July 28, 2022 at 10:52 am

I don’t know Unca, I have never heard that the FO was just waiting for the prospects to make their way through the system. Winning baseball puts butts in the seats and historically that has been the front office goal. You don’t get major TV revenue or national TV coverage with empty stands.
Whatever, if you’re right I don’t expect to see playoff baseball in SF until 2025 or 2026 and that’s if our current group of kids actually become ML players and not Bowker redux.

      • xoot said, on July 28, 2022 at 11:11 am

recent discussion about the a’s money sources (cf. their rock bottom payroll) reminded me that the teams get even shares of some mlb revenue streams. The owners used the down time during the pandemic to reevaluate their profit priorities. Their lockout and unified approach to the new CBA reflected their new consensus. They know what they’re doing. Wish I did. The mlb IT platform (sorry) is strong and getting more manipulatively sophisticated every day. They’re getting ready to make the move from cable-bundled tv to on-line. Meanwhile, I suspect they’ll be fine with fewer ballpark patrons on average at higher prices.

  14. James said, on July 28, 2022 at 2:29 pm

A friend suggested trading Rodon for a top flight prospect or two and then packaging him/them with a couple of our own to try to land Soto. I gave him a nod for a tiny bit of creativity.

    • Flavor said, on July 28, 2022 at 2:51 pm

i really don’t have a lot of interest in getting Soto. You have to send 4-5 of your best prospects, ruining the system, AND THEN you have to give him 500 million dollars. That just sounds too complicated

      • James said, on July 28, 2022 at 3:13 pm

The idea is to halve the number of current prospects you’d be giving up by combining them with some one else’s via Rodon. I’ll go out on a limb and say, barring injury, Soto will add more value to a team than, at the very least, any two of the Giants’ current prospects.

      • Flavor said, on July 28, 2022 at 4:01 pm

Sure but you have to factor in the 500 million. That limits a lot.of flexibility for the next 10 years

      • James said, on July 28, 2022 at 4:26 pm

Gambling on a Bonds like run from Soto would be worth it, IMO. If they did sign him to a long term deal, it wouldn’t make sense to penny pinch with the rest of the roster. They just simply wouldn’t go after him in the first place. 50 for Soto still leaves 200 which is 50 more than they spent this year and still less than LA and SD’s spend.

“The mlb IT platform (sorry) is strong and getting more manipulatively sophisticated every day. They’re getting ready to make the move from cable-bundled tv to on-line.” I wish. Aren’t there a bunch of long term cable deals many franchises are enmeshed in? It seems like MLB would make paying to watch local games an option, if feasible. It’s unlikely to be a current technology barrier preventing it.

    • xoot said, on July 28, 2022 at 5:45 pm

I think cable bundling is doomed, but it seems to be rotting slowly rather than vanishing. I have no idea how exclusive any of the franchise cable deals may be. Local blackouts on the mlb network must relate to such agreements, but mlb is still making money from them so a gradual shift seems feasible. As I say, I surely don’t know what the owners are up to, collectively, but I think there are definite signs on the surface. (Now, rule changes, gaming, gambling . . . .)

  19. snarkk said, on July 28, 2022 at 5:18 pm

Sorry to hear about Tony Dow from LITB fame.
That show was a favorite of mine as a kid for after-school TV viewing at home.
I identified big time with The Beav. I had an older brother like Wally. Alternatively harassed and disdained by him, then protected, too, fortunately the latter more often than the former. Not too unusual in a 2-brother family, I think. Lumpy and “Hello Mrs. Cleeeeeever” Eddie Haskell are still there in the recesses of my brain. My brother is moving towards Tony Dow age, and I’m not liking that at all…

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2022 at 5:38 pm

I had an older brother who was one of the best older brothers of all time. He was five years older than me, so we didn’t hang out together all that much, but he was never unkind to me a single time. Never. I really mean that. Never a single time. Just a really sweet dude. And then the worst thing that can happen to a family happened. My older brother, in his early 20s, was killed in a car accident that wasn’t his fault. He was a passenger in a car driven by a friend of his.
The next few years for me were a blur. I can look back now and see how traumatized I was. Our family just kind of existed in shock for a few years. Then my sisters started having children, and my parents were getting grandchildren, and there was new life in the family. Our family was finally able to move on.
I’ve written about my brother on the Flap before. I’m grateful to have been with him the few years we had together. I had some friends whose older brothers were jerks to them. One of my friends had an older brother who was really cruel and sadistic to him. It always stunned me that some people had older brothers like that.

    • zumiee said, on July 28, 2022 at 5:49 pm

Leave it to Beaver was a little ahead of my era. Its “gee whiz” innocence, where the dad and mom were endlessly patient and full of wisdom, didn’t play as well with later generations. In fact, thinking about the family shows I watch as a young person, it’s interesting how many of them were not the typical Leave it to Beaver type of family. Andy Griffith was raising a child with the help of Aunt Bea. The Brady Bunch was a blended family of step-parents and step-siblings, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father was about a single dad and his maid. The Nanny and the Professor, a single dad and the nanny. Partridge Family had a single mom. Even the Waltons were a little different in that grandparents lived with the family, which didn’t happen in shows before that. All in the Family showed tensions in a family with adult children sharing the house.

      • zumiee said, on July 28, 2022 at 5:55 pm

Although, other than Archie Bunker, all the parents in those shows are endlessly patient and wise.

      • unca_chuck said, on July 28, 2022 at 6:38 pm

Luck of the draw I guess. My bro was a major league asshole till I outgrew him. He was 6 years older than me so it took a while.

Courtship and Brady Bunch/Partridges were my era. Beaver reruns were so unreal as to be laughable. Same with Mayberry/My 3 Sons. Who didn’t want an Asian maid after watching that show? Bill Bixby was my jam as My Favorite Martian was my fave as a little kid.
