A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

O.Jo Time, Baby

The most aware Flappers know I’ve been trying to win the dinner for 2 at Original Joe’s for quite some time now. Well, yesterday I qualified for the drawing.

The easy part is over. Now I gotta hope the drawing Gods smile down upon me.

One hour later. Update:

I won. I finally won.

Ah cool. how many here still listen to Marty? Not a KNBR/sports talk person so it’s been years for me.
IF Giants aren’t selling and Z only makes few minor additions at least we get couple more months out of Rodon. Games like yesterday are why I dig the guy. Might have been capable of finishing off another complete game shutout.
As of right now Phils are up on Cards for last WC spot. Daniel must be fuming; STL has Cubs Pirates and Reds in that division to whomp on. Maybe they make a big move.

    Woo hoo!!

  3. unca_chuck said, on August 1, 2022 at 7:55 am

Wow. Just reading about Bill Russell. In 21 winner-take-all games, dating back to college, Russell and his teammates went 21-0.

    • willedav said, on August 1, 2022 at 8:32 am

One of those was famous one vs. Wilt and Lakers in LA where Jack Kent Cooke had put balloons in rafters before Game 7 1969 Finals. Russ walked in saw those and went about ruining any chance of celebration. As he put it, “Those fucking balloons are staying up there.”

      • unca_chuck said, on August 1, 2022 at 9:21 am

Heh heh. Yep. Great stuff. Denying the Lakers never goes out of style.

Rumors about baseball trades are a total waste of time. I doubt we can have our cake and eat it too.

    Flavor- Congrats on the dinner.

Is Beer Can gonna be there?

    • Flavor said, on August 1, 2022 at 9:49 am

pretty sure Marty recycled her a couple of years ago

      • snarkk said, on August 1, 2022 at 11:13 am

I heard Marty mention Beer Can in a recent radio session. She’s around, in some way or another. He’s literally phoning in his show from Mesa, where he lives. His line fuzzed up big time last weekend. Funny. He may be up in Bay for some weekends. No more shows on the patio, like they used to do…

  12. Flavor said, on August 1, 2022 at 9:50 am

Twin would have enjoyed this. Back in like 2008 I predicted the Giants would beat the A’s 6-0 and they beat them by exactly that score and I ran several victory laps about that call. I remember Twinner telling me to pipe down about it. LOL

  13. James said, on August 1, 2022 at 10:15 am

The Nationals are down a closer right now. Wonder if they’d be interested in Doval on top of any prospects.

  14. alleykat69 said, on August 1, 2022 at 11:05 am

Jeff Passan reports the Padres are acquiring from the Brewers Josh Hader
Padres giving up their closer Taylor Rodgers, reliever Lament (sp?) and prospects Gasser&Ruiz

    • willedav said, on August 1, 2022 at 11:14 am

Esteury Ruiz (if that’s they guy in deal) was up recently, one of their top prospects iirc. The other Rogers has had some issues himself lately. idk, spending lot on closer can be a fail.

      • alleykat69 said, on August 1, 2022 at 12:44 pm

I think it is a great trade for the Brewers, Devin Williams is going to be their closer and he’s been lights out!
You have Rodgers as the setup guy,and if they fix Lament’s mechanics ( he was 3rd I believe? I for Cy Young just a few years ago before having elbow issues that could be a solid backend of the pen)

Yes it’s Estuary Ruiz is the deal as well.In AAA he’s hitting 333 Ops 1.028 13 HR’s plus an incredible 60 steals!
Gasser is a good prospect RH pitcher as well. But Ruiz is a steal I believe and will fit end nicely in the Brewers outfield as atleast a 4th outfielder soon..

Hader was getting shelled lately, but probably more due to his wife’s difficult delivery, which I’m sure got in his head, and he should of just went on bereavement leave instead of getting lit up by the Giants & ironically the Padres before the Giants series..But he’s still one of the best closers and maybe the Pads we’re losing faith In Rodgers? so they pulled the trigger.Still the Brew crew came out on top in this one imo..

      • djloo27 said, on August 1, 2022 at 12:45 pm

I believe the East River here is technically an esteury or something…

  16. djloo27 said, on August 1, 2022 at 12:44 pm

    Way to go Flavor!
I remember that 6-0 prediction, too.
Yes, Twin was irked but not as much as when we ganged up on him in the great CERA debate…

    • alleykat69 said, on August 1, 2022 at 12:57 pm

Yeah it was always fun tying to beat out Twin in any debate! Miss the dude just for his cantankerous personality, I had some great and also frustrating rants with him, boy he always thought he was Mr.Know it all and a lot of times I guess he was, but when you got him once in awhile it was quite satisfying even if he still would disagree, but reluctantly give in occasionally.Snarkk I believe gave him “The Oracle “ name which busted me up lol 😂

  17. unca_chuck said, on August 1, 2022 at 12:49 pm

Wow. If Hader is really losing it, the trade is terrible for SD. We will see I guess.

  21. Flavor said, on August 1, 2022 at 3:23 pm

i’ve come full circle on James’ buddy’s trade idea. Or maybe I did a 180. Whatever, I like that idea now. Trade Rodon for prospects and then flip those prospects plus any prospects we have that the Nats want and send those too. Then give him 500 million dollars. I’m sick and tired of watching boring baseball players. Soto would light up Oracle.

    • djloo27 said, on August 1, 2022 at 3:31 pm

  32. xoot said, on August 1, 2022 at 8:47 pm

I remember the original Little Joe’s in North Beach, with a line of stools but no tables and waiting diners backed against the wall, and I remember the original Original Joe’s in the Tenderloin and the original Original Joe’s in San Jose (still there, in a spruced up neighborhood). The later, bigger Little Joe’s on Broadway was especially good. I liked walking up Montgomery St. to have lunch there. But for all-around pleasure now, especially for dinner, the North Beach Original Joe’s on Washington Square is hard to beat. A short shot of that park, at sunset, showed up on the telecast earlier tonight.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 1, 2022 at 8:58 pm

      • James said, on August 2, 2022 at 9:25 am

If we trade Rodon to the Cardinals for prospects – they supposedly had the goods to make the Nationals happy – I’ll be even more bummed the three way trade scenario didn’t pan out.

    • snarkk said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:05 am

And Wordle was dumb today. 5

    • James said, on August 2, 2022 at 9:31 am

Wordle is somewhat like managing a baseball team. Each tactical choice you make can be marginally better or worse, but the effect on outcomes is negligible.

  45. Bozo said, on August 2, 2022 at 10:14 am

Yah, Wordle was 5 for me as well.

I think the Pads got the better end of the deal, even if it’s just Bell for 1 year and Soto for 4.
I know the Nats are trying to sell the team, but I still don’t get why they just didn’t wait until the offseason. Soto would still be under control and I’d think there would be more teams to deal with.
Man, I wish the Giants would have pulled the trigger on Soto, even if it was only for the 4 years that he’s under control.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 10:19 am

the wordlebot, on my fourth pick: “I’ll be honest, I had to look that one up. . . . [It] is a valid guess.” But it’s not on the master list. Limitations are inevitable.

  50. unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 10:43 am

You guys thinking that we have to go all in on these deals is short-sighted at best. This team won 3 in 5 through the draft. They drafted 3/5 of their rotation and their entire infield through the drafts from 2005 to 2010 and picked up mid-level guys to fill out the rosters. That was Sabean’s crowning achievement among a lot of shitty drafts before and after, but he hit ’em right in that span.

Is the league different now? Not really. The Astros did this same thing. Albeit with the help of some garbage cans and joy buzzers. But get used to the fact that these guys aren’t gonna spend next year as well.

The Pads are the pads. They’ll fail in the end. I’m more worried about the dodgers, but hey. Fucke ’em. They won’t win 3 in 5. We will ALWAYS have that.

  51. unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 10:45 am

    And Hosmer rejected the trade.

  52. James said, on August 2, 2022 at 10:48 am

Soto himself isn’t enough. But Soto and Turner or Correa would have made SF contenders next year, even if they did nothing else to the roster save dumping Longoria and one other spot. The players that look so forlorn now could easily take on some of that 2021 sheen again with top echelon players in the mix again. Look at the splits. Play Crawford at 3rd. Hell, I’d even sign the Captain for pennies to platoon at first. Replace any injured with another Mercedes or two. They could have added Rodon back, too. The entire payroll still wouldn’t have cracked 250. You just know the SF prospects are going to turn into a mound of Scheisse.

  53. unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:01 am

An what happens when Soto’s contract comes up after 2024? We pay him $600 mill for 12 years?

    • James said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:11 am

      Why not?

  54. unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:01 am

We’ll have no farm and no Soto. He has shown zero interest in being here.

  55. willedav said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:08 am

Giants don’t have prospect capital to have made Soto deal work, even if they traded Rodon to Cards first. 2020 screwed their top guys (including Ramos) out of entire season and the Luciano crowd is still in High A ball. To match what Pads gave up would have meant including Harrison, a “no” for me, and couple others.

Giants need to develop who they have, first and absolutely cannot trade whatever quality young pitching they have. If you need to get younger and more athletic like giants desperately need to, don’t see how you do that by dumping off your best young players for 1 guy who can walk in 2 years.
Note that in game Mac saw yesterday, Soto got walked 3 times. If you put him in giants uni tomorrow everyone else would do same thing.

    • James said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:14 am

What they have is trash. None of these guys will come close in value to Soto and one of the FA shortstops. This team is nowhere for the next 5 years without free agents. That’s my intuition.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 12:06 pm

You of all people should be poo-pooing all this Soto talk.

You want a 2 year rental that will decimate the farm?

    • Macdog said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:24 am

Bell behind him in lineup is having a good season, better than anyone on Giants. But yeah, Soto’s last AB in 8th leading off down 7-3 he got a walk after full count.

      • James said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:35 am

The old he walks too much to be valuable argument. Jesus, this is 2022.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 12:06 pm

No, he walks after 2 years.

  56. snarkk said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:09 am

After Soto trade and current status of Doghairs as an all star team continuing for the foreseeable future, the Giants look non-competitive for the division title for the rest of the decade. Division moves the last 72 hours tell me Giants need to trade Rodon and anybody else on the 26 who somebody will take — for prospects. Keeping Rodon at this point seems completely ridiculous with the unwatchable linguini roster they’re fielding every day. Guys like Vosler, Wynns, this new, temp guy Machado. Seriously?
BTW, has a team ever had their guy beaned by the oppo, who has to go onto the DL, and then within 24 hours they trade with the same team for the beaned guy’s temp replacement?…

    • James said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:20 am

Totally agree this team is non-competitive for many years without major infusion of outside talent. I’m not going to be watching it, either.

    Joey Gallo to the Dodgers…

    • snarkk said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:41 am

MLB is tuirning into college football. There’s a handful of teams that suck up all the top talent and then they just trade with each other when they need a position improved, or they need to dump a player because they got a better one, kinda like the college football portal …

  58. James said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:26 am

The Joey Bart parade of failed prospects era is upon us.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 12:09 pm

Well, don’t watch for the next 2 seasons then, as they aren’t gonna placate the knee-jerk fans who want shiny objects that will turn us into the LA Angels Of 3rd and King.

Kidding, but really. They are in tear-down mode. The guys they are banking on are in A ball.

  59. snarkk said, on August 2, 2022 at 11:35 am

Do the Yankees, Mets, Pads and Doghairs just get to buy/sell whatever players they want like so much window shopping gone wild, and the Giants, despite being a top revenue team, just watch that revenue be spent on white supremacist politicians?…

    • djloo27 said, on August 2, 2022 at 12:01 pm

The white supremacist politician line went way over my head…

    • unca_chuck said, on August 2, 2022 at 12:11 pm

They get to do this because they have good farm systems. We don’t. Not yet. The Dogs got Betts for high-level prospects that they can afford to trade.

We could trade our current crop of hot commodities, but we’d be right back to the bottom of the league in our prospects.

I thought Sabean was the last Giants GM that had his phone turned off…

Just my take, but Winder is the only realist here, i.e., knowing that the Giants were NOT going to seriously go after Soto. See Harper, Stanton, etc. I mean when has Z ever had his “lunch money” stolen? Similarly, Unca seems to be the only sane one (read his 12:06 pm and other comments on this thread). Z is not known for giving away draft choices where he gets zero in return.

Sheesh, the Giants are still within reach of a Wild Card spot and one game under .500 . . . Not saying that they will deal to improve their chances toward that goal; but conversely, if they do trade for future picks (with Rodon, Peterson, and/or other veterans), I believe they will do it logically where Z doesn’t get taken to the cleaners. Just going to wait and see until deadline this evening.

Sounds like everyone thinks Z is an idiot now.

I think most people are upset because we are still stuck in the Brebbia aisle. We just don’t have the ammo that the dogs or the pats have and catching either one is probably a pipe dream. What is really disheartening to me is our defensive and bullpen play. I am surprised we are still in the WC running. I don’t understand why so many of our minor league players aren’t progressing very fast. I seems to me that a lot of that might be on the coaching since I know we drafted players with potential.

JD Davis and prospects coming back from Mets.
      I think Z won that deal…
