A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

We’ve Been Doing This A Long Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 6, 2022

I’m trying to remember the first time I posted at the Splash. There was absolutely no lurking for me. Twinfan and Nipper were talking about projected win totals for, I think 2008, and they were WAY to high, lol. I politely let them know that and Twin jumped on me like a bear in the woods. I was pretty hooked on blogging, at least there, from that moment onward. I remember when that season ended and I was like “ok guys, good chatting with you, talk to you next season!” and Twin was like, “we’re not going anywhere, dunderhead.”

So I kept blogging….

I THINK I started the first blog at blogspot.com in 2009 (although it’s possible I started it in 2010 and then migrated over to wordpress on May 31st 2010). But who knows, maybe we had the blogspot blog for the entirety of 2009? It’s too bad I didn’t do anything to preserve that place, there was some gold there.

My blogging style has changed over the years. I used to be much more combative. That was partly due to having someone to battle with (twin) partly due to just being really pissed off at other shit (life) and partly not knowing how to tolerate other people having different opinions than mine. That last one is probably the greatest gift I’ve gotten from this place—developing the ability to tolerate other opinions (even dumb ones) without flying off the handle. I still fly off the handle on twitter on occasion but for the most part I confine my remarks to snarky comments. Even when I got banned on twitter it was total bullshit. All I did was tell John Hinckley Jr. he was a shitty musician and that pussy complained about that and I was in twitter jail for 24 hours. These days Twitter is really where I spend most of my *blogging* time although that’s not really blogging it’s just gathering information and sometimes commenting on it.

I know I’m going to miss this place when I finally shutter her doors. That’s one reason why I’m going to keep her available as an online museum. And that also gives me the opportunity to fire her back up if I miss it more than I think I’m going to. The biggest thing for me is that I helped create this community that has spread across the globe and into so many people’s real lives. Most people don’t usually a chance to have that much influence in the world around them. I really appreciate that.

Yeah, I think Blogspot was 2009. What a shitshow platform but it did get the ball rolling.

The insider and the Splash were so funny as they were randomly to nonexistently monitored for content. Lots of head-butting and craziness. SOAD, Hawk, Soph, John Tamargo, Nipper (where have you gone?), the cast of character was endless.

    • Winder said, on August 6, 2022 at 10:38 am

Yeah, I think Hawk was also Pinstripes and Dead Ron Hunt. I think there were a few more but I can’t think of em now.

There is some kind of development issue of position players in minors Z needs to fix. At lower levels there are some players making progress, but otherwise there are snags. Either they aren’t picking up right guys or they aren’t getting right kind of help. Too many guys incapable of helping Giants offense, especially with any power.

Just using Mauricio as an example–Giants sent him down to Sac for stretch last season but he returned same kind of undisciplined low OB hitter. Bart too. He spent all year at Sac 2021 but wasn’t anywhere near ready to hit ML pitching, or even make contact.

  3. unca_chuck said, on August 6, 2022 at 9:05 am

    And Ferret head!!!

And I’ll say I did really gain a sense of perspective in being a fan reading and listening to Twin. As infuriating as he could be. His struggles with all his health issues and his ability to simply enjoy the game for what it was really stuck with me.

As far as this place goes, what a great little community of folks that got to connect in the real world. Very special.

We should all hit the bleachers tomorrow in Oakland!!!

    • Macdog said, on August 6, 2022 at 9:37 am

Yeah, there’s something to that about Twin’s perspective, especially in 2010. Before that first WS title, most of us took every loss in the regular season as the end of the world, this team sucks, we’re never gonna see a championship, etc., while nitpicking every little thing. Twin, of course, would have none of that.

      • willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 10:10 am

He used to do same thing over at Bagg’s blog at SJ Merc, which at that time was pre subscription etc. They used to call him “Chef”. This was during time of Nate the less than Great yada yada. There were some other Splash guys that had migrated over there and it was generally a good read before it got scuttled, whether by Baggs himself or Merc itself.

The Splash and the Insider were both learning blog experiences for me also. You could tune out the people who just repeated themselves over and over. It was a sports fans place to vent and it wasn’t always polite or even reasonable but you could feel it came from the heart. I was an asshole at times I guess because I thought my reasoning was correct. Anyway, the bullshit eventually seemed to override everything else.
Flavor, I am glad you started and persisted with this blog I have visited it since the beginning even though I didn’t post much. Quite a few Splashers came over and I liked seeing they were still around. Twin and his pet Nipper were always interesting and you knew right away that Twin was full of knowledge about the game even thought I disagreed with him a lot. I find I don’t feel the need to post a lot here as so many knowledgeable Giants fans usually post things I think about anyway. If you keep this place open like you said it probably won’t die.

Pads at LA gonna be on all weekend, tonight on MLB/tmw on ESPN. Dogs thrashed them early and often (Manaea not a big game guy lol) last night and have hella ownage over them going back awhile. SD got 4 hits and 1 run last night and Dogs just got Chris Taylor back, and he helped cause with 2 run double in 3rd.

Class act from top to bottom and tough as nails. The epitome of what it means to be a 49er. Should have been a 1st ballot HOFer.

When I first posted on the splash, I think twin welcomed me with something like, just what we need, another clown here. Things could get pretty heated but there was always something funny that was said or done. Del Mar Dennis used to crack me up before he went to the dark side. Tedspe and Mr. djloo made me laugh out loud many, many times and Loo still does. Old Seals Fan and his gin and chocolate milk, Nipper and his cheap cold ones sitting in a van, someone pretending to be a college girl named soph, funny? Different? Odd? Creepy? You pick em. We had West coasters, East coasters, Edd posting from across the pond, Paul from Asia, folks from everywhere connecting. How nutty is that?

You know, I always had this feeling that twin thought this was his blog, but it wasn’t, Craig started it, invited everyone to join in and kept this Flap thing humming through 14 seasons and I might add, three of those were championship years. Thank you Flav it has been a damn good run. I bow in your general direction.

  8. djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 1:02 pm

The posting of some of the e-mails between Flavor & Twin was the Flap equivalent of the Pentagon papers…

    • willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 1:49 pm

yeah. We’ve all disagreed about stuff here, but never to that extent.

  9. Macdog said, on August 6, 2022 at 1:06 pm

You mean MEN were always so cruel to me. I am now an 80 year old man going on twenty, still in grad school, and shacking up with Nipper in a tent on Nob Hill. I have always been a realist who knew how bad the Giants were even when they were winning championships. Worst of all, I bet at least half of you went to that meanie school Swarthmore. Oh well, time to be a dignified scion and go chug some malt liquor.

    • djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 2:04 pm

Yuban is the Michelob of mass produced coffee…

    • djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 3:49 pm

That is some world class lurking!

      • Flavor said, on August 6, 2022 at 5:44 pm

it really is. All I had to do was post something about shutting the Flap down and BrynMawr came out of her cocoon.

  11. willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 1:52 pm

Looking at leading jockeys at Del Mar, Florent Geroux has only 2 winners in 26 mounts. Juan Hernandez Umberto Rispoli and “Jersey” Joe Bravo atop leaderboard.
    Whitney over on another channel.

  12. willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 3:15 pm

Geroux won 3rd at Del Mar aboard Taming the Tigress.
There was a horse entered named Althea Gibson. Props to Coco Gauff for mentioning Althea Gibson and Arthur Ashe as pioneer black tennis champions, while she was here in San Jose competing. She edged Naomi Osaka before losing to Paula Badosa in quaterfinals. Very talented and likeable young lady.

      • Bozo said, on August 6, 2022 at 5:38 pm

I would’ve bet that horse. That is awesome.

Wonder what batting average against was vs. Whitey Ford’s scuffball?

  14. xoot said, on August 6, 2022 at 4:28 pm

Oh, the wealthy, sensitive Bryn Mawr sylph had some good moments. I remember her being unable to attend Philly home games when the Giants were there for the 2010 NLCS because of a standing commitment to staff a soup kitchen. Then there were her rapturous posts after jogging at the Pacific Union Club, which has no track and does not allow women to use the workout room in the basement. Oh, hell, what about the Mexican servants at the family’s remote AZ rancho who welcomed their masters by playing rustic music on homemade instruments? Soph was delightful.

  15. dirtnrocksnomo said, on August 6, 2022 at 5:07 pm

I remember perusing the Splash comments circa ’09. I hadn’t spend much time there when Flavor invited me to check out the Flap over at blogspot. At that time it was spiced up a bit with some mild porn on the daily until someone (Sandawg?) made note that they couldn’t open the page at work. I never worried about such things. It’s been a great place to talk Giants baseball with esteemed colleagues.

This season has been a painful one to follow and Z has certainly disappointed with his Sabevans dumpster dive approach. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss and whatnot…

Hope you all are doing well.

    • Flavor said, on August 6, 2022 at 5:40 pm

great to see you here again, Dirt.

  17. Flavor said, on August 6, 2022 at 5:45 pm

yo, for not posting here in 10 years that brynmawr post was an all time post.

    • willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:12 pm

Some funny shit. Maybe your awesome intro today will bring some more out of woodwork.

    • xoot said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:10 pm

I’m not sold. The overall context is funny and good, but there’s something missing. Not the trans stuff — that was just superficial farce. But an underlying tone. Well, maybe it can’t be revived.

      • James said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:28 pm

The revived Soph is too damn sophisticated.

      • djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:34 pm

        Well, she’s older…

      • xoot said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:55 pm

yeah, they’re older, wiser, and invested elsewhere now. Originally, imo, their smart upperclass satire carried undertones of envy. They meant to mock jocks, but inescapably mocked themselves, too. Or something like that. But they did it with style.

  18. Bozo said, on August 6, 2022 at 5:55 pm

Who knows, maybe Rodon stays next year.

  19. djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:07 pm

Clarification: Guys we get directly from the Mets

  20. willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:17 pm

Wade changed the ‘do too. Maybe he has new lease of life with double to wall and a bomb over it.
Gotta admit, watching a STTPOOT game for a change is fun.

  21. willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:22 pm

J D Davis over LaStella et al at 3b. 2 bombs in less than a week. Villar had 1 in 63 ABs, LaStella has 2 all year in 132.

  22. djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:35 pm

    Bart💣

  23. alleykat69 said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:41 pm

Think it was Stewart who said Chili Davis thought JD Davis had one of the best swings he ever coached, I do like his power stroke that’s for sure..
And why are the Giants giving LaStella playing time at 3rd, he can barely make a throw from second, and threw a duck snort over to 1st from 3rd that Belt nearly needed to short hop..

Bart going yard like Davis off this girl name Snead? where do the A’s come up with these rejects? Its like a tryout from Major League..

  24. xoot said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:41 pm

Bart started the season crushing mistake pitches like that. What happened? But he now looks like the relaxed, confident guy who started the season.

In 2012, my younger son and I attended a Giants game at the E Coli and Buster hit a two-run first-inning bomb that looked exactly like Joey’s just now. Bart’s no Buster, of course, but he’s not yet a bust.

  25. xoot said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:53 pm

Flemming’s rosy memories of Ray Fosse and the bay bridge series are total bullshit. One year, the networks tried a combination announcing team and by the third inning Fosse was giving more attention to Krukow’s digs than to the game.

  26. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:56 pm

Loads of fond memories of interesting exchanges here over the years, way too many to even remember. (If you can’t remember them, are they truly memories?) One that definitely sticks out, if not necessarily fondly because it got downright nasty, was Craig and TF about the Scott McClain bat. Loo, you have that now, right? Or did you fix it up and give it to someone?

    • djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:59 pm

I fixed it up and still have it…

  27. djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 6:58 pm

Earlier in the game someone mentioned that last season the Giants hit a record 18 pinch homers.
    How crazy is that?

    • djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:10 pm

      That’s 1 every 9 games…

      • xoot said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:12 pm

        And that’s AI–aaaay!

  28. snarkk said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:29 pm

Garcia has generally been suckage since the AS break…

  29. djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:31 pm

  30. snarkk said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:32 pm

Yep, Bart is showing signs of non-bustage. His swings have shortened up, he’s getting some confidence, not as anxious. If he turns into even a good, serviceable hitter with 15 HR pop, that would be the best thing realized of all season. His defense is improving. He’s got 9 HRs…

    • djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:36 pm

Maybe capable of mid-80’s Brenly numbers?

      • snarkk said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:39 pm

I’d take that, but he should have more pop that Brenly.
As long as he doesn’t make 4 errors at 3rd in one inning…

    • willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 8:28 pm

slugging pct. up to .398. Even with Belt and better than Yaz Crawford Wade Jr. and LaStella.
Slater Gonzalez less than 10 pct ahead of him. Giants had 11 hits 6 BBs 4 Ks today, 3 doubles 3 bombs.

  31. willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 7:36 pm

River Cats on local channel at home vs. Tacoma. Ramos in CF.

I still think “Nipper” and “Soph” were creations by the same guy….

    • unca_chuck said, on August 6, 2022 at 8:41 pm

Nipper had a lot more staying power. He used to post on my blog but I never saw Soph.

    • xoot said, on August 6, 2022 at 8:44 pm

on the splash once, long ago, twin quietly noted a soph post that in one clause syntactically resembled a nipper post, but I didn’t buy it then, and I don’t now. I recall one simple, well-written post from nipper describing a day game he attended at Candlestick. Memorable. Otherwise, silliness. In contrast, I remember a bunch of sophrosyne’s gems.

  34. willedav said, on August 6, 2022 at 8:39 pm

there is a woman doing dugout and crowd interviews at RC stadium named Bonnie Jill Laflin who used to work for KNBR I believe. Really nice pic of her on twitter doing interview in dugout with Cats SP Tristan Beck, in a blue top/blue jeans with cutouts on shoulders. She puts Amy G to shame, very attractive.

    • snarkk said, on August 6, 2022 at 9:01 pm

Yeah, she was on KNBR morning show some years back for maybe a year, for no discernible reason. Ear candy? Claim to fame was she was supposedly the first NBA scout, for the Lakers. Yeah, sure, ok…

  35. alleykat69 said, on August 6, 2022 at 8:45 pm

    • snarkk said, on August 6, 2022 at 9:08 pm

Hard to take Giants reports of their supposed top prospects seriously.
If it were possible, they’d get worse than an F for development of OFers over the last 40 years…

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on August 6, 2022 at 9:13 pm

I guess it’s so difficult to know. Obviously some prospects are clearly destined to do well; I remember Sabean calling Cain a sure thing way back and turned down trade offers before he even made it to SF. Kind of the same for Lincecum and Posey, MadBum to a lesser extent. They sure were right about those 4, but it’s been awhile now…

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on August 6, 2022 at 9:15 pm

And yeah, no OFers. Calvin Murray was so highly touted.

      • djloo27 said, on August 6, 2022 at 9:19 pm
