5 in a Row, Three More to Catch The Run Led By The Sun Dressed Goddess

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 17, 2022

For those on the west coast who watched on tv, those at the ballpark, and especially the east coast Flap contingent, I salute all of you for making it to the end of that game. I did not. But it was a fun surprise to wake up to. This is starting to remind me a little of the run we went on courtesy of The Sun Dressed Goddess.

I missed the entire game, but I’ve seen Craw’s walk off about 4 times this morning. Looks like Junis pitched a gem and is going to be a keeper.

  2. willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 7:21 am

Ha, kind of content that probably used to get SanDog in trouble at work (HS).
Craw’s 3rd HR all season at home though it was third ball they’d crushed that inning off Kennedy.
Craw also has 3 doubles at home this season, so 6 XBHs in 128 ABs. yikes
Good to see rebound from Junis off last outing. Also good timing for SF with Ketel Marte unavailable.

Have not had access to games last week or so. Question. Is Joey Bart starting to show a little with his bat? 8 game hitting streak 10 of 11 games. Is this real performance or more mirage?

    • djloo27 said, on August 17, 2022 at 8:16 am

      It looks real GH.
I haven’t been this excited about a young Giant catcher since we got Jack Hiatt from the Angels for Jose Cardenal…

        I am marking your words

    • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 8:18 am

He’s had more than his share of bloop hits in those 8 games, but he’s finally making contact at a normal rate. Xoot has described his progress in detail. It looks like he’s established himself.

  4. unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 8:22 am

Yeah, Bart has bee driving the ball to all fields. He looks real. Crawfish’s shot looked like the last 5 the Giants hit. They were all warning track shots that either fell for xbh’s or outs. Yaz, Joc, Flores, Thairo, and Longo all were close to going yard in the last couple innings. Craw got juuuuust enough to get it out.

  5. James said, on August 17, 2022 at 8:59 am

The Phillies have the record the Giants should have. Looking over the Phillies’s stats compared to SF’s, there’s two things that stand out: the missing productivity from Belt and Crawford and the defense.

If the Brandon’s had stayed a little healthier and simply hit to their career numbers, the offense would be a couple slots higher, in the upper half of the NL instead of the middle. They didn’t have to be great.

The Phillies’ D is where the Giants’ was last year. FIP is one of those namby pamby, excuse making stats that nevertheless help explain what’s happened on the field. It’s especially compelling when the disparity between ERA and FIP is so glaring at the team level. The SF fielding percentage sucks, too, of course. Steven Duggar didn’t play *that* many innings, Solano was not a good defensive player, Longoria missed a lot of playing time last year as well, and Wade ain’t that great in the OF. Not enough changed to account for the collapse in D.

Maybe the last quarter of the season gives the Giants time to make up just enough ground.

  6. unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:03 am

Well, I’d throw in the inability of the starters to go past 5 and the overworked ineffectiveness of the pen as a fairly big issue as well. When Junis went down in June it threw off the whole rotation and we didn’t have a guy to step into the rotation. There were far too many pen games.

    • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:07 am

Yeah, losing both Desclafani and Junis was not great. McGee, Littell, and Alvarez were major contributors last year and terrible in 22. Their failure is a bigger issue than the pen usage, which was pretty high overall in 2021, too. I’d still contend that the missing offense from Belt/Craw and the extraordinary reversal of the D provide the most direct explanation for the 6 game gap in the standings between SF and the Phillies.

    • willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:43 am

Cobb has been on IL twice too. Having to use Sammy Long as opener etc. wasn’t good.
Injuries though have affected a lot of teams.
Phils have been without Bryce Harper for some time. Tatis Jr isn’t going to play at all this season for SD and they have had injuries to pitching staff as well.
Dogs are without Buehler and Opie right now plus Treinen.
Acuna has missed 35 games for Braves.
All of above are outpacing Giants.

      • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 11:40 am

and the Giants had plenty of injuries last year. I think I was largely trying to steer clear of injuries as excuse, and I’m not sure UC was emphasizing them, either. Junis’ injury triggered a strategic choice to go the bullpen game route, which overtaxed the bullpen, which led to poor performance etc. is how I understood his argument.

  7. Macdog said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:25 am

Great moment for Craw in what’s been a forgettable season for him, hopefully it won’t be last hurrah this year. I had no idea that ball was going out, as Unca mentioned, just figured it was going to be another deep flyout. And Estrada halfway to the 9th-inning cycle this week.

    • djloo27 said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:58 am

      Didn’t think so either.
Guess he just back spinned it out of there.
Maybe some balls are randomly juiced…

How the fuck did Elroy Face (18-1) not get a single Cy Young vote in 1959?

    • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:26 am

Even though his FIP was pretty good, his WHIP was too high.

  9. willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:50 am

Flores has more than adequately filled in for Belt and hopefully can be re-signed to take over 1b again, maybe in platoon with LH like Vosler if SF can’t land a Josh Bell type hitter. The downturn of Craw (and IF platoon guy LaStella) more problematic, and situation that has to be remedied going forward by adding everyday middle IF to Estrada.

  10. djloo27 said, on August 17, 2022 at 11:49 am

Estrada reminds me of Gregor Blanco.
Just a pure baseball player that loves to be out there…

      Mr. Ed, too…

    • zumiee said, on August 17, 2022 at 11:53 am

I agree, although I didn’t dig his attempt at a bunt hit with Longoria on second and one out. It perplexed K&K, too.

      • zumiee said, on August 17, 2022 at 11:54 am

        Talking about Estrada.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 12:55 pm

I get he might have been trying to bunt for a hit, but it didn’t go anywhere.

  11. mrsprtdude said, on August 17, 2022 at 1:27 pm

Crazy stat time. From the Athletic (Brisbee) Giants history only 20 walk offs when behind in team history, and they have 3 in last 33 days, and 2 in 3.

How many hall of Famers in history have a walkoff homer when behind? ZERO!

    • unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 3:24 pm

So it’s only randos hitting come-from-behind home runs?

That is nuts. That can’t be right. Mays, McCovey, Mantle, Williams, Maris, Ruth, Gehrig, and countless others have never hit a come-from-behind home run in the 9th?

      • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 3:40 pm

None of those HOF dudes had the “clutch gene” – ya can’t teach it.

      • xoot said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:00 pm

        How about Barry Bonds?

      • xoot said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:23 pm

took a quick look — Barry did it for the Pirates in 91. In the 11th, down 1 to the visiting Cards.

    • xoot said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:33 pm

makes sense in an analog intelligence way — if you’re the visiting team up by 1 (or more) in the 9th (or later) and a potential HOFer steps into the box representing the winning run, you’re gonna be cautious, even if you don’t have a bench coach in the dugout waving his ipad and slicing his own throat with the side of his hand.

  12. mrsprtdude said, on August 17, 2022 at 1:28 pm

20 works out to 2 a decade so 3 in a month is amazing!

  13. zumiee said, on August 17, 2022 at 2:19 pm

I think part of the thing that factored into Estrada bunting with the runner on second and one out is that RBIs aren’t valued as much as a stat as they used to be. There’s NO WAY a player from previous eras would pass up an RBI opportunity like that. As famously said by Jeff Kent: “The money lies in the RBIs.” But….that’s not as true anymore.

    • willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 2:48 pm

mm pretty sure that was on his own though and not a product of analytics driven advice.
wonder also when Kap is gonna move Bart in lineup from 8th/9th now that he’s hitting so well.
Over .300 I believe since he came back, with power in place of BBs that were keeping up OPS.

Why the fuck would they do that?
Gonzalez can still add value even off the bench, and still he’s better then most they drag out there. Littel is garbage 🗑 along with the Tipping Man Slazsucki? As all opponents tip their caps back at him knowing he will groove one..

I heard on radio the other day that the Giants had 2 sac bunts so far this year.
    Yes, 2.
    And, Dbacks have had 21…

    • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 3:46 pm

They have twice as many as the Dodgers and two more than the Mets, though.

      • unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:04 pm

        Well, they have hitters.

      • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:17 pm

I’ve never followed that logic. High powered offenses don’t sacrifice because it’s an objectively stupid thing to do, but if you have less talented hitters that achieve a certain threshold of mediocrity, it will bolster your run and win totals?

      • snarkk said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:36 pm

Maybe a sac bunt would help the Giants once in a while, particularly in extra innings where one run wins the game for them at home, with the ghost runner already on 2d. They seem challenged to score in those situations…

  16. Flavor said, on August 17, 2022 at 3:56 pm

With Gonzo out does that clear a pathway for the grave Duggar to return triumphantly?

  17. alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:26 pm

It would be a gravely mistake by the Giants to bring him back, that coffin ⚰️ is buried along with GD’s baseball career…

  18. willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:31 pm

Too many LH Ofs…every time opposing team throws LHP, giants have to play 2 LHs in OF. Unless you want J D in LF and Longoria at 3b. Wade got hot, Gonzo did not.

  19. James said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:35 pm

“Duggar will get his third straight start in left field while Jo Adell (thumb) remains day-to-day. In the first two contests of the series, Duggar went hitless with six strikeouts in eight at-bats. Since being claimed off waivers from the Rangers on Aug. 7, Duggar has begun his tenure with the Angels by going 1-for-16 with a 55.6 percent strikeout rate.”

    • willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:38 pm

mm these guys (good field/no hit speedy OFs) are just dying breed. Red sox finally dfa’d JBJ and ate the cost of salary. Giants could not fix slide into oblivion of GD that began in second half of 2021, no one else can either.

    • Flavor said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:28 pm

Fuck those stats right in the ass. How was his defense? How many non believers did he bury? That’s all that matters

      • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:35 pm

      • willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:38 pm

3 letters: D F A. 2 teams have already given up on him this season. Maybe Korea better option.

  20. willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:36 pm

According to Shea, Giants, “led the majors in bunt singles through Monday with 26, well ahead of the Angels and Nationals, the runners-up with 19.”

  21. zumiee said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:41 pm

“mm pretty sure that was on his own though and not a product of analytics driven advice.”

Well, it’s all about what a player thinks they get paid for. On-base-percentage gets paid more than it used to, and RBIs less so. At least that’s my impression.

    • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:10 pm

Or he calculated that if he got a hit swinging away, it would likely be a single that advanced Longo no more than a base anyway. If Thairo was really worried about his OBP, he’d be a more selective hitter.

  22. zumiee said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:43 pm

The baserunning gaffe that Gonzalez made vs. the Dodgers may have been just about the final straw. His baserunning is awful and is fielding is pretty suspect. So, if he ain’t hitting much anymore, then that was his whole value.

  23. willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:49 pm

funny enough, Jaylin Davis is back up with Red Sox, and since July 26 is 6-20 in reserve OF role. um with 9 Ks/0 BBs 1 double.

  24. Flavor said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:50 pm

I’d take Grave Duggar back in a nano-second if only to have his burying ways on our side again….

  25. alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:51 pm

“On the flip side the Giants have several BP candidates that can’t get hitters out anymore either “

  26. Flavor said, on August 17, 2022 at 4:52 pm

    • djloo27 said, on August 17, 2022 at 6:37 pm

I’m happy to hear that, Flavor.
GD was a solid defender but he could never quite make that memorable great catch.
Came up a little short more than once…

  27. zumiee said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:31 pm

Estrada had just hit a game-winning HR earlier in the week. His bunt with Longoria on second base and one out, with the team behind 1-0 late in the game, is just never going to make sense to me. It’s like Kapler needs to rein in some of the carte blanc that the Giants hitters have regarding bunting for hits.

    • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:51 pm

In part it seems so wrongheaded because Kelly suffocated the Giants all night long, and we were desperate to see them score at least one run. But if you remove the emotion from the situation, and don’t put any stock into notions like clutch hitting, having runners on first and third with one out is better than having a runner at second. They have a better chance to not only get the one run, but to take the lead. OTOH, Thairo is a RHer . . . .

  28. willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:47 pm

Can’t believe we’re still talking about this guy after SF finally came to senses and dumped him.
Here are GD’s stats for 3 teams he’s been on this season:
.121/.216/.182 0 HRs in 76 ABs, 3 doubles 1 triple. I don’t care if he can play CF like Mays (which he can’t) you have to hit better than that to hold down a job in MLB. Case closed!

    • James said, on August 17, 2022 at 5:51 pm

      But what about Fred Lewis?

    • willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 6:01 pm

above were AL slash numbers. Here is total for season:
      .159/.224/.232 6 BBs 38 Ks in 76 ABs. 0 HRs .456 OPS
Fred Lewis had one awesome season in his career (and a 5 hit game or was it a cycle?), more than Duggar can say.

    • Flavor said, on August 17, 2022 at 6:42 pm

he’s been slumping. You can’t coach speed. I’d take him back and not be surprised at all if he went on a triples spree. Or a killing spree. Either way.

      • willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 7:13 pm

Stopped having snakes and spiders for pets when the 6’ long Gopher snake got out of its cage. 6 months later, I was up early on my way to work and I saw a rubber snake on the ground by the fridge. Turned out it was the missing snake and it tried to shoot back behind the fridge into a hole next to the water supply. It had been living off the mice in the walls I guess. Caught him before he could get all the way in and took him to a field down the street and cut him loose. The kids were bummed.

Hey now. Making up a little for the fuckup on 2nd.

  60. xoot said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:28 pm

when someone interrupts the game with an on field appearance and the fans respond, but the tv feed shows the sky and the announcers kruk and kuip go silent — that’s just bullshit. Afterward, kruk and kuip say, not good, hurts the pitcher’s rhythm, no excuse. But we can hear the ballpark fans laughing like hell on the audio the entire time. So what happened? What a bunch of sanctimonious incompetents

    • unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:29 pm

Pretty stupid when your team is on the field. Someone has posted it on Youtube already.

      • xoot said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:01 pm

They need to comment on it in real time, without glorifying it — intelligently suggest what’s happening. Then rubberneckers can go to youtube for more. But utter silence is idiotic. Only excuse is that the people on the air and in charge aren’t smart enough to deal with it in real time, despite the fact that they know it’s likely to happen one or more times during the season during a broadcast devoted to real time description.

  61. unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:31 pm

    Wow. Awful pitching there,

  62. Macdog said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:31 pm

    Cut! Enough of Leone.

  63. willedav said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:31 pm

  64. alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:32 pm

Can’t stand Leone he just throws to many cookies up there..

  65. unca_chuck said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:37 pm

Talk about due. Slater taters are a rare delicacy these days.

  66. alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:45 pm

Somewhere James is smiling, a rare clean inning for Rodgers!

  67. Macdog said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:50 pm

  70. xoot said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:56 pm

pinch run in scoring position, picked off. clutch AB in the bottom of the 9th, GIDP. What a fucking tank job. Just one game, but damn.

  71. snarkk said, on August 17, 2022 at 9:57 pm

    Pen blows it again.
But, only because they can’t score much…

  72. alleykat69 said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:04 pm

Leone 13 runs allowed in his last 12 innings!
Krapler should of never let him start the 8th innings..

  73. James said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:04 pm

No smiles, Kat, after the blown lead. But to distract myself: Rogers has had 20 clean innings this year.

  74. xoot said, on August 17, 2022 at 10:17 pm

Rogers is not the central problem with this team. He’s not really any sort of “problem.” He’s always an adventure, but only because his approach is unusual. His overall success rate is fine.

It would be nice if we had a few guys who could come up from AA or AAA to give these guys a break
