A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

This Is What You Get When You Do Nothing At the Deadline

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 18, 2022

Leone is the easy target right now but the fact is the pitchers Kap trusts in his bullpen right now are on a short nearly non existent list. Did Farhan try to add a BP arm or two at the break? He did not. In fact he traded Trevor Rosenthal (RH) who was just clocked at 98 in a Tuesday rehab start. He’s just about ready to join the Brewers. Would be nice to have a guy like that to bring up right now……

I mentioned before the trade deadline that I wanted them to pursue Carl Edwards now the de facto closer for the Gnats. I loved him when he was with the Cubs and mentioned that a few seasons ago on the Flapperoo…

Pen guys are volatile to shuffle on/off roster, but finding Brebbia’s of baseball are what Z excels at. Unlikely would have cost more than a lottery ticket prospect to add. Would Kap consider using Doval for multiple inning save?

    • Flavor said, on August 18, 2022 at 7:10 am

He had a ridiculous answer to that question in the post game

Funny story from cbs–the Dad of rookie Stone Garrett came to the O from Texas, and was so unprepared for cold (in August) he had to buy Giants hoodie. I know someone who moved to just outside Dallas from Bay Area, where it’s been 100+ for months now.
Day before yesterday it was 97 here in south bay, yet fans are bundled up for night games in summer in SF. Remember when “stone” was an adjective back in day?

Yeah this kid Stone Garrett like thousands of other guys who have kept following his dream paid off.He toiled in the Minors since signing originally with TB.He even quit baseball and got a real estate license and was doing pretty good, but he still had that itch to play ball, and the D-backs took a flier on him.Crushing the ball for the Reno Aces (D-back AAA affiliate) he gets the call to the show, and the call all sons love to make the exciting call to the parents.Hope he sticks awhile it’s been along journey..

NFL&NLFPA reach agreement on 11 game suspension for Deshaun Watson
Includes 5M fine… Ironically his 1st game back will be against his former team the Texans in week 13..

    • snarkk said, on August 18, 2022 at 9:29 am

      Not ironic.
      That’s clearly been planned.
NFL has no ethics whatsoever. None.
All about the TV and Benjamins…

Seems like most of the powerful institutions of our great country are motivated by greed. The rich get richer and the poor get bupkiss. Same as it always was.

      • alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2022 at 9:49 am

Yeah your right Snarkk makes total sense the greed of the NFL had this planned out..
One player who really got caught up in this shit show is Calvin Ridley, how could he get suspended for a full season?

      • snarkk said, on August 18, 2022 at 10:11 am

Ridley shows again its about the money.
Can’t have players caught up in gambling, when the NFL is in bed with the online gambling outfits. The games can’t have a sniff of being fixed. Pete Rose could have been boinking underage girls when he was in the league (that just came out recently as an allegation), but that wouldn’t stop him from getting in the HOF — it was his gambling…

I may have missed it here, but I just saw that Frank Gore was busted in Jersey for some domestic violence abuse earlier this summer, after the Niners had him retire with them on a one day deal. Wow. The allegations are pretty horrendous. I guess they won’t have a number retirement day anytime soon. He might have just kissed a HOF spot good-bye. I guess the stats show domestic violence is no more prevalent in the NFL than in society, but I wonder about that…

  7. willedav said, on August 18, 2022 at 11:24 am

“ridiculous answer” yeah saw that. Maybe using closer for more than one inning doesn’t compute.
I am re reading Jeff Passan’s “The Arm” and after he talks about all the abuses of guys like Koufax, to the present where pitchers have been limited to innings and pitch counts since 2000 or so, he talks about “pitchers throwing less and blowing out more.”

    • zumiee said, on August 18, 2022 at 11:54 am

Great book. Probably makes my top 10 of baseball books, which would include “Ball Four,” “Where Nobody Knows Your Name,” and “The DiMaggios.”

      • zumiee said, on August 18, 2022 at 11:54 am

        And Pawlie’s “World Serious.”

    • Bozo said, on August 18, 2022 at 11:55 am

I don’t know how it turned out, but when Nolan Ryan became president of the Rangers, he hired Mike Maddux to start stretching out their pitchers.

re gambling — Mays and Mantle got banned from mlb for shaking hands with people at a Vegas casino. Now, mlb has its eye on the strip as a place for a ballpark, probably linked by an AC’d mall to a casino and hotel. Gambling will be a great direct and indirect source of revenue for mlb, I think. Symbiotic.

How will they keep players from gambling on games? nfl relied on info from its “gambling partners” to catch Ridley.

  9. snarkk said, on August 18, 2022 at 12:20 pm

    BTW.
Yaz comes in last night as a pinch runner. Promptly gets picked off second. WTF?
And, what’s the deal with Wynns and these catcher interferences he does? Plus, plain bad D with his blocking and glove.
Giants really are a poor fundamentals team this season. From the get go. Just about every game there are at least one or two mental or physical errors. And, they usually end up hurting. They don’t score enough to push through bad fundamentals. That isn’t fixed by looking at the spreadsheets…

Sitting behind home plate today. See if we can break our 8 game losing streak.

    • Flavor said, on August 18, 2022 at 12:54 pm

      Nice. Send a pic

    • willedav said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:20 pm

Awesome, enjoy. Crowd looks little light.

  11. mrsprtdude said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:01 pm

Heaney for LA struck out 10 in only 4.2 innings and left down 5-0. That must be a SLOW game!

  12. mrsprtdude said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:04 pm

I have to wonder..has there ever been a player with 17 homers in the 1st 2 months ( 40+ homer pace) that hit zero in the next 2 months that wasn’t hurt? yes he was nicked up but still. Joc’s lack of power is odd right?

    • willedav said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:37 pm

It is odd, huh? Looked up game log on cbs site, and coming in he was 8-24 in August, 4 doubles 3 rbis. And as you said, 0 bombs in while.

  13. willedav said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:32 pm

Boy Webb having some problems today.
Gotta admit, DBax have some good looking young players to watch, plus the big power bat. And that’s without Ketel Marte at all this series.

  14. willedav said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:43 pm

Since HR vs. Pirates, Yaz 0-17. Would SF non tender him in off season?

    • willedav said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:46 pm

questionable decision there to try and get runner at 3b, allowing hitter to reach 2b with 0 outs. yikes

    • alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:54 pm

Oh I think they will tender Yaz only cause he’s the best RF they have ever played that crazy Bermuda triangle, better then Pence even imo.Is he streaky yes, but most players have been including lots from other teams.

  15. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2022 at 1:47 pm

Last home game before they hit a long road trip and it’s the D-backs even with Webb u can’t expect a large crowd on Thursday imo..

    They need more coaches! (kidding)

  17. unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2022 at 2:50 pm

Did they really need to rest Yaz and Bart? At times Kapler seems hell-bent on cooling off his hot hitters.

    • unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2022 at 2:51 pm

I’m talking yesterday. Going .500 against these guys, esp with Webber going, is pretty sad.

Not that there ain’t time, but they look dead again.

  18. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2022 at 3:05 pm

    Are you fucking kidding me?
Crawford &Belt both try to bunt there way on with runners on base???
Unbelievable White Flag BS!! Damm swing the bat I don’t even care if you strike out swinging but bunting to strikeout out ferchrissakes stupid as shit!!

  19. mrsprtdude said, on August 18, 2022 at 3:07 pm

All my baseball life I have held to the idea that in every 3 game series each team is destined to win one game. The difference maker is who wins the “rubber game”. It isn’t always the last game, but a winnable game that bad play, bad pitching, missed opportunity takes away the game. Last night was that game. If we win last night, we are not all glumly now. DAMN!

  20. unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2022 at 3:09 pm

Whaat the actual fuck was that all about? I hope James was booing that ‘effort’ by Belt.

Krukow’s lame-ass covering for him was asinine.

  21. unca_chuck said, on August 18, 2022 at 3:11 pm

    These guys are sick again.

  22. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2022 at 3:16 pm

Gallen was chuckling heading back to the dugout on Belt’s stupid bunt attempt with runners at 2nd&3rd? Kruk with his usual homerism said :Belt just couldn’t pick up his pitches lol seriously??The crowd roasted Belt going back to the field as they should have and Belt Oh Captain will have to answer that play for sure in the clubhouse..

  23. alleykat69 said, on August 18, 2022 at 3:25 pm

Guess there working on bunting when they go to hitters friendly Coors Field next…

  24. Flavor said, on August 18, 2022 at 4:19 pm

Great pic from James and his wife today I’ll put in tomorrow thread

  25. snarkk said, on August 18, 2022 at 4:57 pm

Well, I said before this Dback series that if Gyros went at least 3 for 4, they’d still be in the mix for a slim chance at the 3rd WC spot. Splitting the series at home isn’t going to cut it. And, they lost the last two with their top 2 starters going — just lameass offense, baserunning, defense, etc., with over used Pen crapping out — the usual. Truly a .500 team, at best…

    • Flavor said, on August 18, 2022 at 5:54 pm

i’m actually surprised they are a .500 team with an underwhelming offense, a shitty defense and a leaking near dead bullpen.

      • snarkk said, on August 18, 2022 at 8:10 pm

Yeah, the Pen ERA now is about 1.5 runs above last year’s Pen ERA. That’s a lot. Really shows how a good Pen, and not an overused one, is essential in today’s game. The role of the Core Four in the 3 in 5 cannot be overestimated. Romo is now pitching in the Mexican League…

  26. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on August 18, 2022 at 7:04 pm

And it’s a bit of an odd .500 team at that. Month of August they are 8-8, with *streaks* of 4 L’s, then 3 W’s, then 2 L’s, then 5 W’s, now 2 L’s. Shows potential to stay above .500 with those win streaks, but also potential to completely tank with consecutive loss streaks. So which team is the *real* Giants? I remember at the break in ’87 in Boston (the year after that heartbreak of a World Series), Sox were right around .500, and manager John McNamara said “I think this team is lucky to be at .500”. They immediately fired his ass and Sox came out after the break and won something like 11 straight. Made post-season that year but lost to the team they could never get past, the A’s……

  27. xoot said, on August 18, 2022 at 8:36 pm

James used the difference between team ERA and FIP to explain one of the problems. Compare the Giants’ difference to the dodgers difference. (BBRef makes it easy — just cursor over the team FIP and it’ll show you the spread.) I never expected to respect either of those stats, but in this context, taken together, they’re great.

    • xoot said, on August 18, 2022 at 8:41 pm

of course, the Brandon Belt bunt, well, I don’t think there’s a stat that takes that sort of thing into account. Uninspired and uninspiring.

  28. djloo27 said, on August 18, 2022 at 9:36 pm

Think of the many companies we’ve all worked for in our lifetimes.
Did everyone do their job well every day?
Were some employees superstars and others unreliable or even useless?
Why should a baseball team be any different?

  29. willedav said, on August 18, 2022 at 9:48 pm

Zona impressed me and seem like team on rise.
