A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Sticks Swinging Time

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 26, 2022

Yikes…that headline reads like a group sex scene from the underbelly of an after hours Minnesota tavern circa 1975…..

Ok gents, I’m in Black Butte, Oregon for a while to play golf, re-set, and not think about the Giants too much. As it is the waning days of this fine institution I will attempt to put up a new daily thread but if I don’t you know why.

Here’s a pic from last year, 10th tee Big Meadow. That’s my main man Chris, otherwise known as bird dog when he posts here. Of course the grand ol’ girl herself sitting majestically in the background.

Saw that column on nbcsportsbayarea Mrsportsdude mentioned about Giants optional batting practice. Will Clark said, “If I’m hitting .220 or .230 I would not option anything…get out there and do your job.”
Also referenced need to be in box and hitting that day to see how yard is playing.
    Good old school stuff.

Batting practice sounds right to me, and maybe add some baserunning and infield drills as well.

Multi reed player Branford Marsalis is 62 today. Only had one of his cds but it was absolutely great, Trio Jeepy from late 80s with Milt Hinton and Jeff Tain Watts. great tunes, Makin Whoopee, Sonny Rollins’ Doxy. UMMG by Strayhorn.
Found another pianoless trio from Sonny Rollins not long ago, recorded in Zurich 1959 with Henry Grimes and Pete LaRoca. 5 tunes great versions of I Remember You and Oleo, and Horace Silver quintet (Blue Mitchell Junior Cook Gene Taylor Louis Hayes) does 5 of his own tunes on other half.

    • Bozo said, on August 26, 2022 at 12:14 pm

Remember when Branford led the Tonight Show band? That was a tight band. He also has a great sense of humor too, that clip when he was playing with Sting and found out his real name was Gordon, hilarious.
Very talented fam, I see Jason quite a bit in New Orleans and I love Delfeayo’s Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

      • willedav said, on August 26, 2022 at 12:42 pm

Thanks for tip on Delfeayo’s band, have to check that out.
Been seeing reminders on jazz station I listen to of upcoming tribute to Sonny Rollins on b-day early next month. Hope he’s OK

Looking forward to seeing Trombone Shorty playing locally this weekend. The little town of Manteo NC has Shorty and a band I’m not that familiar with, Govt Mule, playing. We don’t get many big name bands coming through here and having one of them be Shorty, I’m pumped.

      • Winder said, on August 26, 2022 at 2:16 pm

Wow, thanks for that. I had never heard that. It’s in my library now.

In September Horse racing channel TVG will be rebranded as “Fan Duel TV” and former NFL network host (GMF) Kay Adams will anchor a new morning show for the betting company’s effort to expand its reach.
A steaming service,”Fan Duel+” will launch at the same time that Fan Duel TV goes live on cable and satellite providers next month, the company announced on Thursday..

Was wondering the whereabouts and secretive of Kay leaving Good Morning Football, and wondering if this is a major letdown if a lot of people can’t get the feed? Are unwilling to pay for it.. She must being getting paid real good though. Then again Nate Burleson parlayed his time on GMF for a nice gig on CBS Morning Show. Must be something going on behind the GMF show losing 2 stars?
Just not the same with Jamie Erdahl in her spot and former Patriots Devin McCortney in Nate Burelson’s spot who was totally polished, that CBS Morning recognized and offered a huge money deal I assume?

Maybe it’s because I’ve been listening to the WWOZ stream a lot lately, but among the stories that pop up on my newsfeeds are videos of Trombone Shorty as a tiny kid blasting away. One Wynton Marsalis big band rendition of Ellington’s Second Line features him at 13, stealing the show.

    • Bozo said, on August 26, 2022 at 4:01 pm

Yeah Xoot, Shorty has been playing for years (I’ve seen a picture of him and Bo Didley together). First time that I remember seeing him I was standing next to Allen Toussaint, in my book thats like watching a ballgame with Mays. That band just gets better and are becoming a monster act.

      • xoot said, on August 26, 2022 at 4:31 pm

You’ve got had some very great musical experience, Bozo.

I’ve seen that photo with Bo Diddley. Shorty’s a very short little boy blowing that big horn.

      • Bozo said, on August 26, 2022 at 5:02 pm

I did have some lucky run ins, but all things considered, I wish I had been more sober during a lot of those years.
Toussaint was brief but great, it was after Katrina just before Shorty put out his 1st LP. Toussaint had produced it and just happened to be standing next to me watching the band play at Jazz Fest. I chatted with him a bit and asked him if he ever thought about playing the accordion. He laughed and said he did play one but didn’t think he was good enough to record with it. I just shook my head.

I’ve been listening to some Oasis lately. It only took me about 28 years to like them. The dysfunction between the two brothers really put me off of them for decades. But they do their particular thing very well. They have a good sound, and you can put a collection of about 20 songs together of theirs that hold up well. The band finally did break up when Liam swung a guitar at Noel’s head in a dressing room. It was the last straw for Noel, who had been putting up with Liam’s antics literally his whole life. The brothers reportedly haven’t been in the same room for years.

    They have been compared to a latter-day Beatles . . .

    • zumiee said, on August 26, 2022 at 5:07 pm

I can see that, and they’re enjoyable, but Oasis is a little too derivative to be considered truly great. In the same way that Lenny Kravitz has some memorable songs, but the songs all sound vaguely familiar, as if pieced together from other older songs from other artists.

      • zumiee said, on August 26, 2022 at 5:24 pm

Oasis’ first two albums were strong, and then it was pretty much downhill after that. The band had arrived with perfect timing. The Seattle grunge scene, which had produced so many great records, was fizzling out because of the deaths of so many key characters from drug use. And as great as the music was from that scene, it always had kind of a dark side to it, and even nihilistic, I guess. After Cobain died, and so many fans of grunge were bummed out, Oasis popped up with a bunch of sunny anthems about enjoying life. It hit the spot for a lot of people.

      • zumiee said, on August 26, 2022 at 5:29 pm

Cobain committed suicide, and Oasis’ first well-known single was called “Live Forever,” with lyrics saying “I wanna fly, I wanna live forever.” It was just such a change from the grunge scene, and it moved people more than the quality of the song probably justified.

      • zumiee said, on August 26, 2022 at 5:38 pm

And then Radiohead came along, and they were better than Oasis.

  11. unca_chuck said, on August 26, 2022 at 4:13 pm

Trombone Shorty played the Santa Cruz Blues Festival in Aptos like 4 years in a row, including the Experience Hendrix deal when that came through town. Unreal. His shows were always very good. Great band. Saw him strolling around but never got to talking to him.

Anybody want to see JD Davis pitch in the mercy innings? Heard he was a closer in college..

  18. djloo27 said, on August 26, 2022 at 9:35 pm

There are some people who think Kotter lost the team with his national anthem protest.
    Is that possible?

    • xoot said, on August 26, 2022 at 9:36 pm

      no

yeah, who would answer a stupid question? Sorry. Just logged on to mention Judge.

On the ’87 Cardinals, Ozzie Smith (0/75) and Tommy Herr (2/83) combined drove in 158 runs with a total of 2 homers…

  20. xoot said, on August 26, 2022 at 9:45 pm

I don’t pay attention to the yankees, but I flipped over to the a’s game in time to see a 9th inning drive off the RCF fence. Improbably, impossibly, Judge almost nailed the speedy runner with a perfect strike, in the air, to the 2B bag. What an arm.

    • djloo27 said, on August 26, 2022 at 10:00 pm

      7/300 and he’s ours…

  21. mrsprtdude said, on August 26, 2022 at 10:00 pm

Loo I think maybe he lost the team with the robot mechanical answers. get mad man. Act like you give a shit. Maybe he does behind the scenes.

  22. Winder said, on August 26, 2022 at 10:09 pm

I think he just makes bad decisions.
