Why?
I know this isn’t a big deal. In the scheme of things there are other things to focus on. I get that he’s only had 2 hits in 20 at bats this season. He looks like probably a misfire of a prospect, at best he needs more time down below. But I do not get, on any level, why you send Heliot Ramos back down in a lost September just to bring Austin Slater back from the DL.
What. Is. The. Point.
Yeah, totally. I looked up Lewis Brinson. He’s hitting .188 for Giants and has K’d 13 times in 35 times at plate.
In 4 years with Marlins he hit .203 in almost 1000 ABs. No way he’s here next year, at age 28.
He was first round pick in 2012 draft and still scuffling.
Given how bad LH OFs have been, even vs. RHP, no reason not to let Ramos have some run.
And Luis Gonzalez had another adventure on deep ball to RF last night, while Ramos made a fine running grab in ESPN game Sunday for SF.
In other news, appears NBA will change eligibility rules and this will be last year of one and done college ball. Long overdue. I’ve always felt it wasn’t fair players not interested in college were basically forced to do so since they couldn’t be drafted until a year after HS had passed. Since G League is much more formally in place and thriving, should be better for everyone…maybe even quality of NBA ball improves. we’ll see.
Same for Longoria/Vosler…
But BF why would u say that,Slater is a Stanford guy and you have said , you can never have enough smart Stanford guys on your team!
But seriously the Giants are a joke playing the regulars still.Their loyalty is beyond disbelief to continue rolling out these vets in a lost cause. And the big joke, don’t discount Longo &Belt returning on 1 year play&break discounted contracts when they should be hitting the pavement. This team says they want to get younger, but they don’t even play the youngsters?Whats that tell you?
Looks like it’s gonna be a very busy off-season for the Giants. Or at least it should be. The only reason I could see in sending Ramos back down is if his confidence level looked bad. I am back on the getting rid of the bore core once again. After last year they had me fooled, but I won’t get fooled again.
Maybe Slater has an AB bonus clause or something that the Giants are trying to honor, about the only reason I can think of to trot him out there now.
I can understand that MLB wants teams to at least look competitive down the stretch, but when two bottom dwellers are playing each other, the teams should be able to do ST type evaluations now if they want.
One of the many problems with “one and done” in college basketball was that it wasn’t even “one.” The player could play the one season, then drop out of school after basketball season was over. A total travesty all-around.
Loo good call on Vosler. If Giants had put LaStella on 160 day IL and played Vosler instead they might have gotten a real hitter at least.
La Stella, the duddest of the duds this season.
La Stella, at the time and maybe still only, was the first 3 year deal Farhan decided to give out
The Giants have to solve the “exciting young talent” shortage problem. Clicking through some other teams’ games, many teams have at least one exciting new player, and some have more than one. Bart made progress this season, and maybe it all comes together next season. Villar is getting there. But neither is Mr. Excitement yet.
Even more so since the Giants don’t play any games of consequence until maybe the last series vs. the Padres — maybe. Otherwise it’s all meaningless games vs. the Rox and Snakes.
well i am so fucking glad we got Slater around for those Padre games.
Maury Wills dead at 89…
mm back in day when btw Giants ground crew sogging up the field and Mac abusing him with tags as he went back to 1b they did all they could to make his life difficult.
Dodgers had cool players back then. I used to imitate Wills pre at bat 2 hard swings in L L.
Maybe someone will go steal 50-70 bags again with new rules.
oh! RIP. Had to respect him.
Loo has posted about this before, but 1962 when Wills won MVP, was just a travesty. He hit .299 with OPS of .720 and stole record (then) 104 bags. Also made 36 errors at SS. 8 votes for #1
He edged Mays, who hit .304 with 49 HRs and 141 rbis. 7 votes for #1
Below those two were Frank Robinson who hit .342 with 39 HRs and 136 rbis. 2 votes for #1
and Hank Aaron who hit .323 with 45 HRs and 129 rbis. 0 votes for #1.
All 3 of those hitters were 1.000 OPS guys.
Wills led vote by 5 over Mays 2nd, Tommy Davis 3rd. Davis won batting title .346 27 HRs and 153 rbis
Robinson was 4th, Don Drysdale 5th 25-9 record 2.83 ERA 314 innings 283 Ks.
Aaron was 6th.
I vaguely remember reading in a baseball book that Maury Wills and Doris Day were in a relationship together for a while, but kept it secret because of the predictable racist backlash they both would have experienced in 1960s America from the percentage of the population that was white bigots.
That was probably in the Leo Durocher biography I read.
I have a very minor consulting role in the ongoing legal battles over the a’s proposed new waterfront stadium, so I listened in to the City Council meeting today because the negotiations were on the agenda. After about half an hour, the meeting was adjourned for almost an hour because there was an active shooter right outside City Hall killing people. My home, Oakland.
Villar does have some pop.
yeah, and a bunch of teammates do tonight.
2 more shutout innings for Rogers, as ERA dips to 3.89.
Not sure of the math, but without that one bad 7 run outing, believe it would be under 3.00.
Rogers’ brother wasn’t quite as good tonight.
I read all of Rogers “analytics numbers” are better than last year. Close to league best in average exit velocity. That said he is also a poster for all the anti magic hitting the Giants this year. Things even out. Last year Joc or Wade hit walkoff homers this week:) This year. Just missed.
We still have little talent and a long way to go to catch the playoff contenders..
Winner Winner!!
Slater with the game ending catch.
No one paying attention:(
Slater with a great game ending catch. Glad he’s here! 😉
Make it 63-57 when Estrada is in the lineup.
and as noted on twitter thread, 8-20 when he isn’t.
Gad Phils gave up 18 to Jays tonight. 21 hits 9 for extra bases. Coonrod got into the act, 1 inning 3 hits 1 BB 4 earned. ERA at 7.82.
Really spectacular catch by Slater to seal the win!
Villar another bomb, just keep playing him everyday!
