A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Legit 107

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 29, 2022

Dodgers won number 107 last night. Now that’s a team that is a genuine powerhouse. I will live the rest of my life not understanding how we won 107 last year. I hope Farhan has learned something. I guess he was in a bad spot with Belt and Craw and they had to be re-signed but to just continue his dumpster diving ways and do nothing else is going to be really hard to watch going forward. Even if I don’t have to write about it anymore.

I thought this was a cool tweet that some of the oldies at the blog would appreciate.

Has this all been a Farhan ploy to clear the deck financially as much as possible because he thinks they can land Aaron Judge with a crazy 10 year $400 mill deal???? I am rooting for the Yankees to win the WS so Judge will at least not have a drag in his thinking that he did not help bring them a championship. A clear mind can allow things like coming back home to come to the forefront.

Only guy I care they sign is Rodon. If Giants have enough pitching to hold other teams down they could “contend” without landing big FA which I’d wager heavily they do not. All about 2024 and top prospects getting in there.

    • Macdog said, on September 29, 2022 at 6:57 am

Saw a stat the Giants have allowed the fewest HRs (129), just ahead of the Astros (130), so there’s that.

      • willedav said, on September 29, 2022 at 7:01 am

Yes, they’ve been good at that all year.

    • Giant Head said, on September 29, 2022 at 7:25 am

Judge on board potentially not an enticement to lure Rodon back???

  3. willedav said, on September 29, 2022 at 6:58 am

Joc could play as long as he wants, like Matt Stairs who in today’s game gets 2-3 ABs instead of one as PH. Even his outs are hit hard when he is going well, and while regulating shift might help him get more singles, but that’s not why his bat is in lineup. He was lone LH who added power to lineup, as others fell off wagon from 2021.
He’s just too much of a Dodger for me and that bunt with 2 strikes vs. LHP was clincher. You are a vet ML hitter and that’s all you got? If that was Luis Gonzalez fans would have called for immediate DFA.

  4. Giant Head said, on September 29, 2022 at 7:29 am

The Judge factor is also something to get the fan base that has to be quite blasé about the current prospects for 2023 fired up like it has not been since at least 2016 if not 2014. If I were living back home, nothing about this team this year would want me to spend my money at Oracle (is that the right name now??? Hard to keep up), and definitely not for next year if things stay the same.

Picture of Mays up top is certainly awesome.
    Don’t recall ever seeing it.
    I like imagining it from Willie’s POV…

    • willedav said, on September 29, 2022 at 8:17 am

He was in clubhouse before game yesterday. Story in Chron said he’s recovering from hip surgery. shea and others on twitter have pic of him.
and he did say, “Man you guys need some help.”
      Yes, tremendous angle shot.

      • djloo27 said, on September 29, 2022 at 8:25 am

My medical opinion is that you don’t have hip surgery at 90 unless you’re in relatively good health.
        Say Hey!!!!!!!!

  6. Flavor said, on September 29, 2022 at 7:53 am

the Yankees will never let Judge go. Accept that. Not after what he did this year. The fans would revolt. All we are going to be doing is possibly participating in driving up what they have to pay—you know, the position we are always in

      Yep.
      Nimmo’s more our type.
I can warm up to that.

  8. sandog said, on September 29, 2022 at 8:14 am

What is Farhan supposed to do? Sign Judge and Turner? Those guys aren’t coming here.
That leaves dudes like Swanson and Josh Bell. Do you really want us to give max deals to those guys? I don’t.
Keep dumpster diving and drafting and hopefully we start hitting on some of those picks.
Gonna be a rough couple of years. Last year was a gift from the gods, and I am now fine with 2-3 years in wilderness trying to build something more sustainable.
I have no beef with Z or Kap and I trust the process. Yes, it sucks that the Dodgers have an all time great team, the Pads are pretty loaded, and the DBacks look like they are coming fast. We might have to wear it for a few years. I can deal with that.

      Fantastic picture.

  10. blade3colorado said, on September 29, 2022 at 9:06 am

What SD said . . . I heard absolutely no one complaining last year about Z. Now, he just turned stupid? Same goes for Kap. Last year was an anomaly with a half dozen or so players having career or near career years. Sheesh, 2 of them (bore core) came back from the dead. Z would have been crucified if he hadn’t re-signed them. In a weird fucked up way, last year’s record delayed the rebuild of our team.

By the by, almost all of the big free agents last year stunk up the joint this year, so that would have been the wrong answer as well. One other thing – I am down with what Willie said about Joc . . . I don’t want a former Dodger on my team, especially one who grew up rooting for them while LIVING IN THE SF BAY AREA. Fuck him.

Last, but not least, it’s a total waste of time going after Judge. Not Z’s style and moreover, he’s not leaving the Yankees in my opinion.

  11. Winder said, on September 29, 2022 at 9:10 am

“I don’t want a former Dodger on my team, especially one who grew up rooting for them while LIVING IN THE SF BAY AREA. Fuck him.” Love it.

  12. willedav said, on September 29, 2022 at 10:42 am

I don’t see much hope in FA market this off season. Judge Turner Swanson and Rizzo won’t leave their teams to come to SF. Correa is opting out of middle of $35 mil deal…for what, 4 yrs at $40 mil? Pass. Crawford isn’t going anywhere either and Giants aren’t moving him around.

If Joc is gone I can see 1b or LH DH like Josh Bell, who as Unc noted isn’t doing so well in SD since big trade. I’ve always liked M Brantley who can hit LHP and use whole field. But if that’s all they get, 1 more hitter won’t move needle. OF market is very thin.

And actually couple of Z’s draft picks moving rapidly up chain–Harrison and IF Casey Schmitt. Add in Luciano Wilson and OF or two like Vaun Brown by 2024, that’s when things can get interesting. Still gonna need all the pitching they can get their hands on.

  13. alleykat69 said, on September 29, 2022 at 11:02 am

I’ve liked Brantley too always been a solid hitter, but he’s just strictly a LH DH that also breaks down a lot and who would just make the team a lot OLDER, tired of having geriatrics on this team. Yeah we will have to ride it out with Crawford he’s never played an inning of baseball other then SS and it won’t happen next year either so Forever Giant, Forever SS was phrased just for him the best SS the SF Giants have ever had.

  14. snarkk said, on September 29, 2022 at 11:16 am

    Willie has it right.
    They need help.
He’s right to call them “the guys”, because like me, he has no clue who most of these dudes are…

  15. snarkk said, on September 29, 2022 at 11:21 am

Thanks to the Rocks, the Giants will end up with a more respectable record than they really deserve. Hey a win is a win, but this streak shouldn’t fool anybody about how bad this team has been. Villar looks like he might grow into a decent player and hitter. Vosler has a surprisingly good set of offensive stats, meager as they are for the season. Not that either of these dudes make much of a difference to team success, they’re just cogs. Giants really need a difference maker player, particularly an outfielder. No, Judge isn’t coming. Yankees will scoop him up and re-sign him — they have no choice, and why would he leave NY ? I wouldn’t, even if my first love team were the Giants…

  16. blade3colorado said, on September 29, 2022 at 11:34 am

This is what I would do if Z and ownership wanted to go CRAZY . . .

In 2024, the Giants will still have a reasonably-priced LaMonte Wade Jr., Austin Slater, and Luis Gonzales. Get rid of Yaz . . . I was never enthusiastic about this guy, whom I think took too long to make it to the Show. That being said, he contributed more than I thought he would, but the time is right to say adios.

That leaves the Giants with earthquake size holes on the corners, and smaller holes in the rotation and behind the plate. Consequently, the GMen have the budget to hypothetically go semi-nuts in the winter of 2023. They can snag Nolen Arenado for $35 million, Wilson Contreras for $15 million, Josh Bell for $12 million, and re-sign Carlos Rodon for $30 million. With all that, they’d only be at $160 million for 2023. Believe it or not, this is actually cheaper than their 2022 line-up.

Oh, and the contracts for Crawford, La Stella and Wood are up in 2024, meaning they have another $45 million falling off the books. The Giants could THEN offer Shohei Ohtani $80 million a year and still be $42 million under the luxury tax. lol

Okay, that is if Johnson and other ownership pigs go crazy . . . Very doubtful, especially since they are all probably losing a bundle in the stock market and real estate this year, like everyone and his brother is.

Me? I am hoping Luis Matos pans out, along with Heliot Ramos, Jairo Pomares, and/or Hunter Bishop. More likely scenario is that Marco Luciano and Kyle Harrison are the main farm contributions going into 2024.

    • Flavor said, on September 29, 2022 at 11:49 am

that all sounds reasonable to me.

    • James said, on September 29, 2022 at 2:59 pm

      Nice scenario, Blade.

  17. snarkk said, on September 29, 2022 at 11:59 am

Like I’ve said before, there are only a handful of current players I’d keep if that were possible to jettison the rest and replace them. Webb, Doval, Junis, Villar, Thairo, Wilmer, Davis, Cobb, a couple of the Pen guys including maybe Miller to see if this stretch is just smoke and mirrors, maybe, maybe Slater. And, Bart. I may be forgetting one or two. The rest can go. Yeah, Yasztremski can go, he’s not getting any better, or younger…

  18. zumiee said, on September 29, 2022 at 12:12 pm

Yeah, the Giants outfield needs the scorched earth approach. Put Estrada out in left field, get rid of all the other outfielders. Get Judge!! I want to believe!! Build a new outfield in free agency. A bunch of money has been freed up.

  19. sandog said, on September 29, 2022 at 2:24 pm

Judge is gonna be 31 at the beginning of next season and already has had some issues staying on the field. The price tag and contract length is gonna be through the roof after this season. Reminds me of Pujols going to the Angels. #No thanks.

    • willedav said, on September 29, 2022 at 4:13 pm

Not to mention he got walked 4 times the other night with the Yankees lineup. He’d get full on Bonds treatment in SF. Plus he could say goodbye to any cheapo RF shots.

  20. James said, on September 29, 2022 at 2:58 pm

Between Yaz and Gonzalez, I’d keep Yaz. Gonzo whiffs just as much, is a terrible defender, and, like Yaz, did not have a good season. A rebound from Yaz is a safer bet than improvement from a shitty singles hitter. Of course, I won’t complain if they simply acquire better players to replace both of them.

    • unca_chuck said, on September 29, 2022 at 8:15 pm

      Neither

      • djloo27 said, on September 29, 2022 at 9:20 pm

Yeah, I’ve had it with Yaz and Gonzo had me going there for awhile but got exposed.
When the fuck are they gonna step up and get a real ML outfield?

  21. James said, on September 29, 2022 at 3:40 pm

The finish to the season shouldn’t be discounted in assessing where the team is at. They were going to play the Rockies a certain number of games, whether at the beginning, middle or end, and whatever dubious mix of psychological factors there are supposedly boosting the Giants at the end, the same factors are at play for the opposition. Overstating how terrible they were in 2022 ignores that the decline of the bullpen and defense probably cost them enough Ws to be in contention for the last WC. It also means that they can shoot for that 88-90 win range next year with some smart (and lucky) moves. Smart will mean spending more, but maybe not to the level the frustration over 2022 might drive another front office.

  22. willedav said, on September 29, 2022 at 4:30 pm

Giants sit 12th for BA 9th for OB 8th for slugging and 8th OPS in NL.
Team leader in HRs BA and slugging, plus OPS is Joc who sounds like he’d rather be elsewhere.
Second highest slugging pct belongs to Longoria, aged oft injured one whom most would like to be elsewhere next season too.
Davis has shown power in very small sample size but doesn’t have hist of improving D anywhere.

So SF would have to add 2 new .750-.850 OPS hitters to equal what Joc and Longo did while hoping for rebound from Yaz Wade Jr and others. We’ll see.

    • James said, on September 29, 2022 at 5:08 pm

My above comment wasn’t to suggest that all they have to do is improve the bullpen and defense, and presto, everything’s cool. They need to at least maintain the offensive production they had this year, even if there’s a heavy focus on run prevention. That’ll require adding talent.

      • willedav said, on September 29, 2022 at 6:43 pm

Yes, agreed. Tall order, that. Hope Villar can be part of that.
