A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Still Winning

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 1, 2022

Another win. Another day we aren’t eliminated. Both the teams in front of us won, at this point they’d have to lose out and us win out to get there. Not even really worth thinking about but we need a thread, right?

10 Ws in last 11 has solidified 3rd place advantage over AZ and gotten them over .500. Wilmet ceremony was nice and he’s great guy, but can they find LH to play 1b and DH if Joc walks?

He’s at 500 ABs, hitting .231 with .400 slugging, his worst in 7 years and OPS of .716. That might be close to league average for all hitters, but way below production of most 1b.
the Giants burnt him out and he’s less than stellar defender everywhere, like few other Giants. Last time Cobb pitched and got tagged for 5 runs in 1 bad inning, he was on highlight reel for bases loaded play he botched, missing the bag and then throwing high to Bart at plate.

Catching up on this and I’m still laughing picturing Flav as a jockey. I feel for the horse.

Burnt Flores out? 145 games is burning him out?

    • djloo27 said, on October 1, 2022 at 8:27 am

Mr. Ed, like many horses, can only go a certain distance.
Gotta keep Wilmet under 400 ABs if possible…

      • willedav said, on October 1, 2022 at 1:22 pm

second half it’s like they wore him out. First 300 ABs he hit .250 with OPS at .780.
Next 220 he hit .202 with OPS of .629, and lost 100 points off the slugging pct.

Mr.Ed is more of a carriage jockey then an endurance rider, best scenario for him 2-3 starts a week plus alittle DH. Great honor for him and well deserved winning the Willie Mac Award his clubhouse and field leadership might not show on TV but it’s not forgotten among teammates and management which Z and Kapbottle appreciated along with the Latin players who knew he always had their backs with support.

Phillies lose to Nats 13-4, Giants still alive.

James, we have meaningful October baseball!

You just know there are a handful of Phillies fans paranoid enough to be worried that they really will lose the rest of their games. It’s too bad the Brewers stand in between the Phils and the surging menace by the bay!

Phillies fans are used to heartbreak just like we are.

They should’ve started the well rested Art Mahaffey today…

    Another bomb for J.D.!
He’s exactly what the Mets need…

The Rockies were leading the Dodgers 4-1 in the 7th inning, and then the Rockies pitchers walked 5 Dodgers in a row. 5 in a row. I think I could do that. I think I could stand on the mound in Dodger Stadium and walk 5 guys in a row.

    • James said, on October 1, 2022 at 10:57 pm

But are there still teams whose hitters wouldn’t allow you to do that?

  10. willedav said, on October 2, 2022 at 6:27 am

Saw Garcia meltdown half inning only, on replay. Why was he left in there so long with no one warming up? 5 straight hitters got on base at one point. Even the LHs burned him.
Art Mahaffey was really good, and had killer pick off move.

    • djloo27 said, on October 2, 2022 at 7:40 am

      Bless you, WillieD…

      • willedav said, on October 2, 2022 at 8:00 am

Ha, thanks. I’ll miss these great old cards you post and all the boxscores.
Didn’t Mahaffey just turn and whip an underhand throw from set position kinda like IFs do for his pick off move to 1b? You remember so much about teams and players from this era.

      • djloo27 said, on October 2, 2022 at 11:20 am

Honestly didn’t remember, but plenty about it in his bio…

Before the game Mahaffey had predicted that he would pick off the first batter to reach first base on him in the major leagues. Mahaffey possessed an exceptionally quick – and borderline illegal – move to first.

In the eighth inning the Cardinals’ Bill White led off with a single. Mahaffey picked him off at first base with what he termed his “shoot-from-the-hips slingshot motion” pickoff move.11 The next batter, Curt Flood, also singled and was likewise picked off. Mahaffey claimed to have nabbed 26 runners in one year in the minor leagues. Phillies right fielder 12

Cardinals manager Solly Hemus insisted that Mahaffey’s moves should have been called balks because he never came to a complete stop; his shoulders twitched. The umpires sided with Mahaffey. (In his career Mahaffey was called for four balks. Three of them came in April and May of 1963 when National League umpires overzealously enforced the balk rule. Mahaffey picked off 13 baserunners during his career.)

Mahaffey’s next game was a start in Philadelphia on August 3, and again he picked off the first batter to reach first base on him, Jim Marshall of the San Francisco Giants, who had walked. Thus, Mahaffey had picked off the first three batters to reach base off him.

I feel bereft, not clinging on to some sort of delusional, irrational hope. So post-modern. And yet . . . and yet . . . what is “meaningful” anyway?

    • willedav said, on October 2, 2022 at 7:24 am

Games and at bats very meaningful to some of the young guys who have pitched and hit in last month, plus Davis who homered again. I think the same pitcher who opened yesterday, Alexander, will open today’s game. Long road to get through 162. What you have to do as ML player.

    • djloo27 said, on October 2, 2022 at 8:13 am

Can you use bereft all by itself or do you have to be bereft of something specific?
I have a similar question about thankful and grateful…

Oh well. The very small spark of hope made it till last night. I put myself up as one to enjoy outlandish images of reoccurring Giant comebacks, and Lord knows they have at times come to reality. Until next year, lets hope mgmt goes deep in the cookie jar cause I can’t bare to imagine opening day ’23 games of Giants vs Yankees with only ‘hope and prayers’ to carry wins those games.
Now it’s the Eagles to watch with revisiting Invincible about Vince Papale to fire up the mood.

So weird the season isn’t ending on a Sunday. I hadn’t realize till like a week ago!
Judge needs to get some hits, and Maris Jr needs to go away. One more homer from Judge and we never have to see that blow hard ever again

    • djloo27 said, on October 2, 2022 at 1:33 pm

Judge had a ton of pitches to hit today.
3 Ks and a walk so far.
      Possibly one more AB.
      I think he’s exhausted…

      His first since 6/23!

      • djloo27 said, on October 2, 2022 at 7:41 pm

        Enough of Slater already.
        He’s like long Covid.
Never gets better and never goes away…

80 wins! I had 88 in Twin’s honor. Not quite.

Nobody predicted the Giants would have the best record in baseball in 2021. I think I predicted 65-70 wins at most. Man, I was wrong. The 2021 San Francisco Giants won 107 games with the oldest roster in baseball, using platoon advantages and positional flexibility to achieve this unbelievable record. Of all the teams in Major League Baseball in 2021, the Giants were the only team to not have a player appear in 140 games and one of three teams with only two players to reach 500 plate appearances for their team.

Even though I was so off the charts wrong about 2021, I definitely did not believe for a second that they would even approach this fantastical record in 2022, as it was so freaking once in a lifetime achievement. Consequently, I never provided a prediction in March or April of what would happen this season.

Regardless, and it may only be me, but I think the Giants did well (in total) this season.
