The Last Game
Just sat down with my coffee like I always do to try to figure out a topic for today’s thread. They usually come quite easily to me. And then I realized this: today is the FINAL Giants game. Wow. We been at this site for 13 years, let’s say that’s 2100 games or so. Throw in another hundred post season games or whatever….
And today is the last one.
I just checked and today is the 4,235th thread at the Flap. How many of those were about the Giants?
A buddy of mine this weekend said “the site says ‘a place to talk about Giants baseball’. Why don’t you just talk about that? Why is it often about other stuff?”
I had to properly admonish him. This place started as a place to talk about Giants baseball and then it grew, organically, into so much more. I miss all the recipe talk. And while I think most of you have borderline terrible taste in music (The Beatles still suck) and I can’t stand the youtube videos that clog up the thread I love that you guys like kicking around music topics. Or any topic. The Flap is like your neighborhood bar….
Simply put, this place has become it’s own community. It’s not really about the Giants anymore. It’s a place people come to be a part of something. And part of me is really sad that I’m taking that away…..
But, the old cliche is true, nothing lasts forever. Let’s have a blast with this final post season with or without the Giants in it. And talk about whatever you want.
That’s how we roll.

The Last Lineup: A Valediction (Not a Waltz).
Batters up. We have waded through low and high, surmounted valleys and mountains. Our driest desert blossomed into florid hope just as JD translated to Just Done, Joyful Dream, Jubilant Days. And as yes morphed from Yaz, so we were slated to craw a last goodbye as the afternoon sun blinded the batter but not our memories. Oh, we basked in a villa of victory three golden times (actually, infinitely more, beyond measure, above analytics). No one proctored our journey as we forded raging rapids, never bartering with Fate, never succumbing to blank despair, bravely bubbling within the brevity of this short life. Ars longa, vita brevis. Ars longa, the long goodbye. The everlasting shadow. Adios, Flapota!
Also no hockey chatter:)
Would be nice to finish at .500…can we get to mmm one win in SD???
Doubt the players give a shot about .500 that’s more of a fan thing. They probably ready to get to vacation and the ho’s
Post season should be interesting. James post about Cobb, who dominated last night, got me looking up numbers. FIP is very good, but compared to Webb he has given up lot more hits. He does seem to have that unlucky J Sanchez vibe of not always being able to pitch his way out of difficulty, and Giants D hurt him maybe more than others. Solid part of rotation though.
Just dunno where Giants add power to offense; so many of LHs sucked as Giants had losing record vs. RHP. Outside of Davis, Joc and Longoria were best hitters this year. Lose them both and they have to add guys just to stay even, which got them 8th NL for slugging and OPS. Neither Davis nor Villar are gonna help D much either.
September was fine, but the 4 months before it, um not so good. Manaea wiped them out last night and he might not even make Pads playoff roster.
“The Beatles still suck”
Yes, they will somehow continue to be considered the greatest band of all time by rock musicians, music journalists, and music industry people, in general , while somehow still sucking. 🙂
Quincy Jones do anything for you?
There was a Q Jones documentary on Netflix a while back, early this year I think. Don’t know if it’s still there, you’ll probably have to search for it. Incredible life the guy has had. Super talented. From Sinatra to Michael and many points in between…
ah, to each his own as far as musical tastes. Gotta admit I’ve enjoyed wide variety of music vids here over the years, including pretty entertaining polka group.
Agreed. To each his own. And to me, they suck
Zumie, I don’t think you ever found the perfect song or two that Flavor digs, but which obviously wouldn’t exist without the Beatles. OTOH, given what little I do know about his tastes, it’s entirely possible that there isn’t such a song.
‘Nothing last forever.” You got that right and when younger it just meant a new adventure. Now it just means WTF am I gonna do now. Just like before a new adventure.
Had to do it.
I’m the buddy Biggy referenced in the thread. That’s me. Pasalon.
Gonna miss the flap, Flava flav. I hope you reboot this bitch next year after a hiatus. I love baseball season and the flap has become part of that tradition. Thanks for the 13 years.
Ditto the players could give an S about a .500 season.
Does it put more $ in their pockets? No. So, why would they care?
Estes said as much this am on his KNBR convo with Papa and his useful idiot sidekick.
I will pay some attention to this post-season play, but won’t watch much. As long as the Doghairs don’t win it all, I’m good with whoever wins. I’d like to see Dusty win it, so he can retire with a manager ring. Astros have the goods to take it all, I just hope Dusty doesn’t F up a pitcher move that costs him…
“Quincy Jones do anything for you?”
Well, not that much actually. I know he wrote the Sanford and Son theme song, which is actually quite awesome, and he also produced some good Michael Jackson albums.
And I know he thinks the Beatles weren’t good musicians, which is wrong. I just think Jones isn’t all that acquainted with what rock music is all about. Frankly, a rock band doesn’t even have to have virtuoso musicians to be great. The Clash are one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and I don’t think anyone thinks they were great musicians. It’s all about the great songwriting and the great delivery of the song. Doing what is necessary to present the song in the best way possible.
i’m wearing a sanford and son shirt RIGHT NOW!
Wow that’s impressive. There used to be a record store just south of SF called Roland’s Soul City that had some of Redd Foxx “party” records (boobs on the cover lol), only place I’ve ever seen them.
Did you get it from Super 70s?
Q Jones was/is a musical genius.
As well as an impressario, producer, conductor and a bunch of other things.
80 Grammy nominations, and that’s just a start of his CV…
I have a lot of sympathy for the people on the Giants postgame TV show this season. It was a dreary thing for them a lot of the season. Last night, they had to try to explain how Manea, who had an ERA of 7 in the last month, completely shut the Giants down. It’s just a talent-level issue.
I didn’t watch all that much of the postgame shows.
I’m going to give it a shot: Soundgarden, “Black Hole Sun.” Definitely one of my favorite Beatles rips.
Everyone’s got something to hide except me and my monkey. Great version.
From an all-time great CD…
Speaking of Dusty, although the HOF is a joke now, he should be in it when he hangs ’em up. Whether he wins a WS ring as manager. He’s got well over 2000 wins, way better career managing win % than Bochy. 19 years as a very good player, and one ring from that. All 5 teams he’s managed have reached the playoffs at least once while he managed them, which no other manager has done in MLB history…
Slush has lineup, which includes Brebbia as opener again.
One of the takeaways from this season is how often this BS has happened.
cbs site says this is Brebbia’s 11th start of the year. yuck
The Last Lineup:
LaMonte Wade Jr. – LF
Wilmer Flores – 1B
J.D. Davis – 3B
Mike Yastrzemski – RF
Austin Slater – CF
Brandon Crawford – SS
David Villar – DH
Ford Proctor – 2B
Joey Bart – C
John Brebbia – RHP
Estrada’s sick and was scratched. Joc on the family medical emergency list.

it’s too bad we don’t have POTD anymore. This is going in the main thread right now, Kokonuts. And thanks for hanging in there all these years.
Tied it up.
Villar.
Vill the thrill!
thumb emoji
Hit em where they ain’t.
I liked the Beatles as a group when I was younger, but I don’t think I’ve listened to a song of theirs on purpose since maybe the late 70s. The Beach Boys top that though, I don’t think I ever listened to a song of theirs on purpose.
Yeah good for Villar. Hope he gets plenty of run next year. like Davis, he K’s a lot and might not be best fielder at whatev position he’s at, but there’s some much needed pop in the bat.
Thanks for all of your efforts over the years, Flavor
Remember. This place was a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.
Also, Fuck the Beatles!
Austin power!
Actually, the Flap and the Beatles have a big thing in common: they both lift spirits. The Beatles arrived soon after the assassination of JFK, when the nation was depressed and sad, and they just exploded on the scene with upbeat joyous music that lifted spirits. The Flap arrived when the Giants had broken their fans’ hearts for over 50 years, and it gave us a place to express our hope that the Giants could win a World Series for us. And then they won three in five years. For us, the 3-in-5 will always be connected to the Flap.
Villar HR number 2 for the day!
Definitely needs to be playing everyday next year along with JD Davis!
Another bomb, Villar for real!
subtle
Miller just said that is the first time the Giants finished 500 in their history how is that possible
The closest they came to .500 for the season was 80-81 in ’75, followed by 78-76 in ’48.
The Last Victory.
And hopefully the last home game for the Pads this season.
I think the season was La Stellar.
The countdown to the ’23 Giants season begins.

Final Clint.
Rogers got ERA down to 3.57. 11 straight scoreless appearances since Aug 30. 16 innings 13 hits 3 BBs 12 Ks.
Hard to believe this is the final Giants game day post on the blog. While I’m an infrequent poster I check the Flap every day during the season and have appreciated the insight and banter from this group. Was even fortunate enough to get mentioned in a post or two over the years. While the daily posts will soon be gone the spirit of oneflapdown77 will live on. As they say in England. “the Flap is dead….long live the Flap”
I love the “how is it even possible” question about the first 500 season. If you start to think of it in terms of the entire range a team’s W-L might fall into in combination with the mere 110+ years the franchise has existed, it’s not that surprising that this the first. At least, not after a Turf Cocktail and a glass of wine ….
I’d think average, or 81-81, is a far more likely outcome than 107 wins or 100 loses. So yeah, it is surprising that this is the first– unless you think you team has an exact equal chance to finish .500 as they do .400 or .600 (for example)— and that would be stupid to think that since there are obvious factors that influence how good a team is going to be. It’s not fucking random numbers you pull out of a hat.
A team is more likely to be average than they are likely to be the best or worst team in the league. Therefore most of a team’s record (historically) should fall closer to .500 than any other number. Just for the hell of it I’ll look it up and see how often they were close to .500 at the end of the season
Sure, the chances of finishing 500 seem pretty small, if you fail to take into account that most seasons aren’t outliers. But even if you narrow the potential range to 70-92/92-70 for the majority of seasons, the chances that they’ll finish 500 in any one of them is not that great. 139 seasons still is not that many relative to the range of “normal” W-L outcomes.
I just sorted on their winning percentages. There have been 25 seasons out of 139 where the winning percentage ranged from 474 to 519. Assuming that’s some reflection of a general range of talent, the fact they never finished 500 in those 25 poker hands is unusual, but not that extraordinary. They’ve never had a Pythagorean 500 WP percentage, either 🙂
Beat the Meatles!!!
Yeah, I’m with ya on the Beach Boys as well. Brian Wilson super genius composer and all that, but there’s only a couple songs that I can handle. Like Grand Funk Railroad, it’s too, I don’t know, formulaic?
Gimme something like this.
I was always a total morning paper guy, for decades, over breakfast before going to work. Once I moved to Asia, no more morning papers. I’ve said it before: for 13 years, the Flap has been my morning paper. Damn, I’m gonna miss that…..
ugh, i hate reading that. Guys like you are why I didn’t tank this place years ago. Sorry, Paul.
their best chance to finish .500 was in 2020 (Covid) and ’81 (strike shortened). Missed by a single win in both of those years but they only played 111 in ’81 so of course .500 was off the table that year. in ’75 they finished 80-81, for some reason only playing 161 that year. Before that you had to go all the way back to 1895 to see them come within a win of it.
So it appears finishing .500 is harder than it looks 🙂
The missing game in ’75 was to have been played at Atlanta. From what I can tell, the Giants and Braves probably had a 2-game series set for Sept. 23-24 Tues-Wed. The Tuesday game probably got rained out, and a doubleheader was scheduled for Wed. The first game was played, Braves winning 7-6 in 11 innings, but the second game got rained out, from this note I found online: “The game was to have been part of a doubleheader, but rain prevented the second contest.”
https://www.ultimate70s.com/mlbbox/19750924/SFN/ATL/0
Also, while the Braves had Thursday off, the Giants were scheduled to start a 4-game series in San Diego.
Oh, Craig, I didn’t say that to make you feel bad. You have nothing to be sorry about. It’s been a great part of my life and I’m forever thankful for your efforts, always. Flap Universe is irreplaceable, but I’ll bet someone (maybe among the Unstable Boys) will get something going.
I checked one other team (Yankees) just for the hell of it.
They never finished .500 since their name change in 1913.
As the NY Highlanders, they went 76-76 in 1911.
Paul the Flap has always been my late evening paper! A place to settle down and relax or rant about what SF was doing that we all could do better!
I hear ya, Dude….
Craig as a favor to those who are not on every day, or at least till after most have stopped posting.. Can you put in the thread title when the last day will be at least a few days in advance? After 13 years I’d like my last post to be seen by at least a few of you:) Cheers. And a heartfelt thanks for all you have done!
