A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

When Pitching Is Better Than Hitting

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 23, 2022

What we have learned this post season, and I guess we already knew this, is that it doesn’t matter how good your offense was in the regular season. In the post season, none of it matters. I think I read that the Yankees are hitting .128 in this series. LOL. The Dodgers WISH they were hitting .128 right now……

Ok here’s my idea with CMC today: use him as a decoy. Sure, run a few plays to him but his real value today could be keeping double teams off Deebo. Why not, right? Why just sit on the sidelines with a hoodie on? He doesn’t need to know the plays to be a decoy.

Was listening to end of Phils game on radio, and announcer said teams with most HRs in a game have gone 19-5 in post season. Phils had to be NL longshot in field to make it to WS, no?

Stanford did beat ASU 15-14 behind 320 yards for QB Tanner McKee, second W in a row after knocking off ND Irish on road week before. Cal lost 3rd straight Pac 12 game in October to UW 28-21. During Cal broadcast Marshawn was being interviewed in first half with Justin Forsett and dropped the m-f bomb on air while complaining about lack of fans at home. And then rode one of the carts around field at halftime.

Panther fans are crying in their beers back here.
Run CMC is gonna be fun.

KC should bring out the best in the Niners.

    • willedav said, on October 23, 2022 at 8:36 am

Exactly–D has to contain them, for 4 full quarters. Don’t care about JG or playcalling, it’s up to team defense to meet challenge head on and not allow Mahomes and Co. to score enough points to beat them. end of story

  4. Flavor said, on October 23, 2022 at 8:50 am

i am strangely optimistic about the Niners today. They are healthier, at home, and as Loo has taught us KC is pretty overrated

If I’ve learned anything these past 5 years it’s Bad Jimmy = Loss.

This team isn’t good enough to overcome a bad Jimmy game. Or a bad Shanny game. Unless the defense scores points. We’ve seen that twice already this year.

We are -2 in turnovers. Which is why we are 3-3. 4 of the 9 are Jimmy. 3 picks, 1 fumble. The team as a whole isn’t holding the ball. we have 11 fumbles. And have only recovered 2.

We definitely need to force our own turnovers if we want to win. I can see us getting a couple picks if the pass rush is back.

” Dave Roberts should have been left off Dodgers playoff roster.”
Good one Willie . . . My thoughts exactly.

They’re giving away Yankee tickets for tonight.
Not only down 3-0 but rainy.
Fuck them for letting 40,000 people sit through a 3 hour downpour the other night…

Yeah all the sportswriters &NY fans will be raining down venom on blogs and call in shows on the Yankees tomorrow after getting swept..
Time for Judge to move on and become a Giant..

yuck Goff and Lions continue to shoot themselves in foot. Fumble at Dallas 1 yard line they lose, get ball back and Goff throws int at midfield.
Sonny Dykes, his former coach at Cal, has TCU Horned Frogs in Top Ten. I remember those game, where Cal would score 40 and still lose.

Phils have a lot of FA guys they’ve spent $$ on, including Harper Schwarber Wheeler Realmuto and Castellanos.
So how valuable is a hitter like Schwarber? He hit 46 bombs (led NL) and had 70 XBHs. BA was .218, OB .323 Slugging .504 for OPS of .827. K’d 200 times, and made 450 outs at plate in 669 PAs.
Salary of $79 mil over 4 years. Played 139 games in LF, DH for 15. WAR on B/R of 2.2.

  13. willedav said, on October 23, 2022 at 2:04 pm

Rizzo is similar hitter to Schwarber though more established fielder at 1b.
slash line .224/.338/.480 for .817 OPS. 101 Ks 32 bombs. B/R says 2.3 WAR. Making $16 mil on 1 year deal with $16 mil player option. 33 yrs old at present.

Shanahan is a moron. That pick was thrown to 3 guys on the goal line. Jimmy was an idiot for throwing it. And btw they took cmc out on the 3rd down play.

Phillies are going to the World Series.

  20. pawliekokonuts said, on October 23, 2022 at 4:15 pm

The whole Phillies thing brings back vivid memories of 2010: Wife (at the time) and two daughters at a Center City restaurant/bar. Oldest daughter after ballet performance. Youngest daughter and I sneak up to the bar for the 9th. Nervous wrecks. Quiet. Mumbling. Wilson nails it. We go nuts. The locals are like: WHO THE FUCK ARE THESE TWO?! Then she and I run down the street hooting and hollering, a dangerous thing to do in the City of Brotherly Love on a night when their fandom was in shock.

  21. blade3colorado said, on October 23, 2022 at 4:28 pm

Pawlie, alluding to 2010, I was actually reminded of 2014, particularly the underdog angle. I mean the Phillies are the first 6-seed to reach a World Series. The Giants seemed to hang on the coattails of MadBum during the entire playoffs, but particularly so during the World Series.

In any event, I am happy for the Phillies, as their owner vowed in 2018 or was it 2019, when he signed Harper, to “spend some stupid money.”

    • pawliekokonuts said, on October 23, 2022 at 5:49 pm

True. I have a Mets friend who is all exercised that the “best” teams are being eliminated. Well, win when the pressure is on. The Giants might still own the best streak of winning elimination games (2012). Six? Speaking of 2012, there’s a great scene with Flavor and moi: http://amzn.to/R67mQ7

  22. Flavor said, on October 23, 2022 at 4:39 pm

    Outplayed. Out coached. Pathetic.

  23. mrsprtdude said, on October 23, 2022 at 4:56 pm

Got on to vent but no energy for it. Decoy? Nope. Run it up the middle with CMC. Epic fail on every levl. Watching us play the Chiefs is like this years Giants vs the Dodgers. The gap is huge. Maybe today is the day where Shanny gets some blame? Terrible penalties. Lame play calling. Defense awful. The big plays we gave up when it counts is a recurring theme. Dominated in every phase of the game.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 23, 2022 at 7:25 pm

The biggest gap is in the coaching. Shanny got reamed again.

  24. zumiee said, on October 23, 2022 at 5:01 pm

The Kings play the Warriors tonight, so the Kings are looking at a likely 0-3 start to their season.
But….there are positive signs. The Kings do look more competitive this season, and their rookie Murray looks legit.

  25. unca_chuck said, on October 23, 2022 at 5:45 pm

This game was a fucking disaster on so many levels. Too tired and frustrated to go into it, but yet again, a fast start is followed by them constantly tripping over their dicks. 3rd and goal from the 3. Let’s take out CMC and run a route that puts THREE WRs in the same spot. And let’s have our brain-dead QB shoot a free throw into the scrum.

How many drives were killed by penalties? How many 1st downs did we give up by penalty? Illegal formation? False start to move us out of FG range? Week 7? Who is coaching these guys?

Look at Miami right now. They are killing it with Mostert and McDaniel shredding Pittsburgh. Using our offense.

We let the wrong guy go.

    • Flavor said, on October 23, 2022 at 7:40 pm

it was outrageous and embarrassing. I can’t believe what I watched. Before the safety I said to my buddy, “I give Jimmy a 1% chance of converting this.” I should have said “I give him a 1% chance of getting the pass of.”
Fucking totally pathetic on every level.

  26. unca_chuck said, on October 23, 2022 at 8:00 pm

McCloud needs to be told if the ball is 3″ into the end zone DON’T RUN IT OUT! So sick of our drives starting on the 12 fucking yard line.

Every aspect of this team was flat hideous. If this is any indication of the team, we may end up 6-11. And we get the Rams next. 2 weeks ago we were in 1st place. Now we are in last. We likely aren’t that bad, but Jimmy makes the SAME mistakes over and over and over.

I wonder if Kyle is just scared shitless to try anything with Jimmy.

In 2 years under Shanny, Matty Ice was MVP.

In 2 years, Matt Shaub was a pro-bowler.

In his rookie year, RG III was rookie of the year.

5 years in with Jimmy and he still acts like a deer in the headlights, makes the same dumb mistakes, and hasn’t gotten better in ANY aspect of quarterbacking.

“Too many years and too much money.”

He’s a bauble . . . Nice and shiny right now, but his god damn projected salary will only breed resentment when he face plants annually after the 2nd or 3rd season. This seems too much like what the Anaheim Angels would do.

      • Winder said, on October 24, 2022 at 8:16 am

I agree. It would be nice to pick up a couple of bats for a fair price but our future is in our farm system. The Giants have been far to old for awhile now and an infusion of youth might take awhile but winning will happen eventually. Those 3 WS wins were some of the happiest days of my life.

so much for DeMeco Ryans being hot commodity for head coaching job.

      • Winder said, on October 24, 2022 at 8:54 am

Yeah, I truly didn’t see that coming.

  33. willedav said, on October 24, 2022 at 8:44 am

Flav’s lede though is spot on. Good pitching beats good hitting, once and forever imo.
Judge slump does not derail what he accomplished over 6 months, but Giants should not be in on him. Yanks had big slump of their own after hot start and were only 47-43 to end season.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 24, 2022 at 8:50 am

Shit, both Philly and SD staggered into the playoffs and both barely made it.

This is prolly the worst likely scenario envisioned by the poohbahs at Fox when they saw the playoffs start.

  34. unca_chuck said, on October 24, 2022 at 8:48 am

I don’t think this’ll damage Ryans rep much. We were still in this game in the 4th quarter. When we got the score to 28-23 we gave up a 65 yard KO return with a 15 yard penalty thrown in for good measure. The TD that ensured took 3 plays?

Every aspect of the team failed yesterday. Especially the offense. 4 red zone trips got 3 FGs and a pick. That is how you lose to KC. Shanahan continues to choke in the red zone and the team still just commits the stupidest penalties imaginable. False starts, offsides, and illegal motions are ALL coaching fails. We took ourselves out of FG range on a false start. Bosa lined up offsides TWICE IN A ROW down near the goal line to give KC a 1st down.

    • djloo27 said, on October 24, 2022 at 8:53 am

Bosa learned that technique from Dee Ford…

      • unca_chuck said, on October 24, 2022 at 9:02 am

Hah!!! Fuck, man, that one offsides had SO many downstream repercussions. it staggers the mind. KC likely wins that Super Bowl instead of the next one. Do they win 2 in a row? Do they keep Ford? Does Brady change his course and not leave NE?

      • djloo27 said, on October 24, 2022 at 9:23 am

They would’ve crushed the no-show Rams and probably would’ve won 2 straight.
        Still bothers me…

  35. Winder said, on October 24, 2022 at 8:58 am

Go Phillies. You know the big money’s on the Stro’s but I would sure like to see em go down.

You saw this? Very cool! This is coming to Oakland this Friday. Might have to check it out.

I’m still fairly amazed how many fans of Pink Floyd have not listened to that first album.

  39. blade3colorado said, on October 24, 2022 at 9:21 am

I am fine with either team winning all the marbles. I like the Astros because of Dusty and them kicking ass on the Yankees (who’s drought has reached 13 or 14 years without a World Series title . . . shades of the Bums. lol).

That being said, I like the Phillies equally or a bit more. Mac, when I saw you a few years ago during my East Coast, South, and Midwest road trip, I loved Philadelphia for the few days I was there. Particularly loved that underground mall/farmers market that we had lunch at, coupled with seeing all the historic sights, including the Liberty Bell.

    • Macdog said, on October 24, 2022 at 11:02 am

Ah yes, Reading Terminal Market is where we went. My daughter likes the Phillies, so I’m glad they beat the Padres, too. Also wouldn’t mind seeing Dusty finally get one. I hope it’s a good series. A rematch of the 1980 NLCS!

      • blade3colorado said, on October 24, 2022 at 11:11 am

Mac, I have never quite been to a place like that. Refresh my memory – where did we get those delicious cheese steak sandwiches? Was it Carmen’s? Just the vibe of that place was so cool and the smells (I really wanted to load up on some deli meats and/or pastries, as we passed a number of butcher/cheese shops and bakeries inside that place).

    • Macdog said, on October 24, 2022 at 3:38 pm

I can’t remember what the name of the place was inside the market, but I know I had the pork and broccoli rabe.

  40. alleykat69 said, on October 24, 2022 at 11:24 am

It’s a tough call, I love Dusty and he’s been doing this game a great service with his long baseball career and managerial career as well. And he really brought stability back in that Stros scandal situation, but I still can’t get over that cheating fucking bunch of players hiding like weasels in runway and slamming a trash can 🗑 when a breaking ball was coming!!

So I’m going with the Phillies and a red- hot Bryce Harper to win it all! Both teams sure have peaked at the right time and should be a good W/S though..Phillies in 6 is my call..

huh, noticed Sam Ehlinger named Colts starting QB with Matt Ryan out with shoulder separation. Remember asking Texas fans if he could make it, and someone (Wilco Joe maybe?) described him as “linebacker playing QB.” Next pass will be first in NFL regular season career.

    • alleykat69 said, on October 24, 2022 at 7:04 pm

Matt Ryan is done in Indy Willied, Coach Reich has said it’s Ehlinger the rest of the season and Ryan is now the 3rd stringer.Mother time has caught up to Ryan who’s been very ineffective and his last game a Pick6 for a TD clinched it in Reich’s mind are maybe even owner Irsay said sit him..

It’s so hard to predict who will be a really good NFL quarterback. The player has it in them or they don’t. Reading defenses, feeling the pass rush, accuracy in throws, and throwing the right type of pass in the right situation.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on October 24, 2022 at 7:39 pm

I’ve thought Mac Jones would be ok, he looked pretty good in his rookie year last year… for about half the season. It’s great that Zappe has been doing well but I wouldn’t herald his coronation yet. Pats have some bigger problems than QB…

Not Judge. TURNER!! Limited throws to 1st next season. Pay him extra to play 2nd most of the time, and short when Craw gets day off / hurt. Estrada at 2nd, 3rd, 1st. Run like the wind. Exciting and winning baseball!

I don’t see the Giants giving out any 9 figure deals anytime soon…

I have no idea what Greggie Johnson has in mind for running the team, but if it is to simply keep the old guys around and sign mediocre talent, then attendance will drop way under 2 mill. I don’t even know if that is important to him. Or any of the crowed of real estate moguls.

Farhan so far is talking out of both sides of his mouth when he says we need to get younger and then says Longo and Belt are important to get back. Can they spend? Will they spend?

This waiting for draft picks to rise through the system is taking too long and it looks for now that we are staring at a 95+ loss season next year if they keep tight the purse strings.
