A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Phucking Phillies vs Astros

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 27, 2022

One interesting thing about this series is that I have absolutely no idea which way it will go. Houston hasn’t lost a post season game yet and the Phillies are the hottest team in the post season. So, who you like?

Regarding the Flap. I think I have an idea about how to end it but I’m pretty slammed with lots of stuff right now and don’t want to feel pressure to drop the hammer on a specific day. So the end of the World Series is no long the drop dead date.

I think Astros in 6 but made an Astros in 5 bet.

I know what you meant with the Phillies, but . . . wouldn’t the team that hasn’t lost a post-season game be considered the hottest team in the post-season?

      What you said.

The Phillies have a bit of that “team of destiny” vibe about them. The pressure is more on the Astros, in my opinion; the Phillies can just go out and play hard and have fun and see what happens. But I don’t think the Phillies are a “just happy to be here” type of team. Harper is grinding hard for a championship. The fact that the Nats won that title after letting him go has to grind on him.

And I don’t dislike Harper as a player as much as I used to. He’s been an arrogant player over the years, but he’s paid some dues now. He’s already had his comeuppance several times over the years.

Loo thanks for that boxscore of Don Carrithers (!) shutout 1971. Ken Henderson was solid player, never realized his career lasted 16 seasons. Exactly type of guy Giants of today could use–little pop to go with solid OB and fine running and fielding OF. Noticed he had assist that game throwing out Cedeno at 2b.

    Shit, Remember Carrithers.

All about Dustiny. Has a team every swept its way through the playoffs? In the divisional era?

    Phillies.

At the beginning of the tournament I was rooting for Phillies/Guardians, so I’m all in hoping Philly gets it done.  I have always loved Harper and would like to see him get a ring.  Still stings that we could not sign him as I have never wanted a free agent more than I wanted Harper to come to SF.   And I do think we legit went after him as opposed to some PR stunt/got used for leverage situation that I know some of you believe.  I do think our ballpark hurt us in that pursuit—-and in several others when it comes to hitters.
If the Astros win, then Dusty getting a ring would be the silver lining for me.
Judge?  Yeah, I’d be excited, but I don’t think giving him 400 mil is a good idea.  I agree with Loo’s post the other day talking about taking the time to build a strong young team.  I’d be fine waiting a few years for that.  Like he said, most of us waited 40+ years for a ring.  It’s not like we’ve gone years without having any success and are desperate as hell.  We won THREE rings not that long ago and had one of the most amazing seasons in the history of pro sports last year.  I don’t need a quick fix.

Well, the 2 things don’t have to be mutually exclusive. This year could have been decent if we took the time to strengthen the pen and get a couple decent hitters. We don’t have to break the bank next year either. Sign mid-level guys to 3 year deals.

Nothing like Judge or Rodon. Although they should kick the tires with Rodon on the off chance he wants to stay. I doubt it, but who knows? You miss all the shots you don’t take. Guys like Ramos,Bishop, and Bailey sure don’t look promising, but the Farhan guys like Harrison, Matos, and Schmitt do. But they ARE a couple years out.

There has to be something between dumpster diving and spending a gazillion dollars.

Dubon made WS roster for Stros, right?
He is um still looking for his first career post season AB, though he has been in couple games as late game D replacement.
Wow just saw column in Chron noting that for first time since 1950 there will not be any US born AfAm players on either roster.

Love to see the Flap extended for the hot stove and F/A signings( probably thru Christmas?) just to see if the Giants finally stop shitting the bed and go hard to update the roster with some ballin hitters!

Not certain you read this Unca . . . https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-niners-offense-is-cruising-until-kyle-shanahan-runs-out-of-scripted-plays/

Surprised it is free on ESPN. Moreover, it echoes a lot of what you have said about the Niners.

According to FanNation, Randy Miller, the Yankee beat writer, thinks the Giants will sign Judge, Turner and Rizzo.

    • willedav said, on October 27, 2022 at 2:47 pm

wow. This guy was on KNBR talking about this, that if Giants get Turner and Rizzo they can convince Judge they are “in it to win it” and he’ll leave Yanks?
Just like Soto situation, I think this is another unrealistic thing for fans to hear, get excited about, and then be pissed off/let down because none of it ultimately happens.
Did read something from Brisbee today where he thought SF could have a shot at Luis Severino ($15 mil team option) should Yanks throw $$$ Judge’s way.

  14. willedav said, on October 27, 2022 at 2:48 pm

And as SD said above about the yard, why would Rizzo leave LH friendly Yankville for Oracle?

  15. Flavor said, on October 27, 2022 at 3:56 pm

i listened to the KNBR interview of this Randy Miller guy. Man, it was so weird to hear a beat writer actually have a take, give an opinion. He seems pretty sure we’ve got a shot at Judge and he made some compelling arguments.

  16. mrsprtdude said, on October 27, 2022 at 4:14 pm

Expected costs for Judge $400 mil Turner $250. Turner and Rodon together are better than Judge by himself.

  17. unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2022 at 4:23 pm

Turner, Rodon, and Nimmo. Throw in Rizzo sure. And Josh Bell. Much rather do that than Judge.

Last time I remember a team going into the WS undefeated in the post-season was…. KC, 2014. They were strutting about that, until G’s knocked out “Big Game” James in game 1 and brought the Royals back to earth. KC still took it to 7 games, and if not for MadBum, they likely would have won. Phils probably have a better team overall than Giants did that year, but Houston is also probably better now than KC was that year. Could be a fun Series.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2022 at 8:47 pm

Ahhhhh, good call. They did roll in hot.

  21. unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2022 at 7:21 pm

Joe Morgan on that Astros team. And Dirty Al Gallagher on the G’s.

  22. unca_chuck said, on October 27, 2022 at 8:48 pm

Their shiny new digs and 4 in 8 helps.

  23. djloo27 said, on October 27, 2022 at 9:10 pm

Someone texted me that Aaron Judge has unfollowed the Yankees on Twitter and Instagram.
    I guess that’s meaningful in this world…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on October 28, 2022 at 1:53 am

Yes, it probably is. I’ve seen some Yankee fan friends post on FB that if NY is not able to re-sign Judge, they’re becoming Met fans. Ha, good luck with that. Could be an interesting off season….

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on October 28, 2022 at 1:55 am

And was it you who said if the Giants re-sign Longo, you’re moving to LA to become a Dodger fan? Man, I hope in so many ways that doesn’t happen….

      • djloo27 said, on October 28, 2022 at 7:10 am

        Yes I meant it Paul.
I’ll spend my final days rollerskating in Venice wearing a Tommy Davis jersey
and drinking myself to death at Barney’s Beanery every night.
Beats what I do now in Brooklyn.
My fate is in Z’s hands…

      • willedav said, on October 28, 2022 at 7:27 am

lulz. Tommy Davis was such a great hitter, really too bad he got hurt.

  24. willedav said, on October 28, 2022 at 7:22 am

Harper has toned down the length of stepping out btw every single pitch routine, but he still has this weird tap the plate 3 times bit before he is ready to hit. Every. Single. Pitch, yuck.

OK, the argument for keeping Longo around for one more go is simple. First, the Giants owe him $5 mil anyway, so for a few mil more he’d play and they don’t need him to do more than DH and play 3b part time so missing games isn’t as big a deal. He was one of top sluggers on team last season (like Joc) and kills LHP. Better with glove than either Villar or Davis, and neither of those 2, while younger, are gonna steal bags either.

I’m not his agent. I’d just as soon Villar and Davis got chance to hit all the time and show what they could do defensively, especially if Kap didn’t move them back and forth around diamond.

  25. alleykat69 said, on October 28, 2022 at 8:02 am

Does anyone really want to see Brady&Rodgers out on the football field anymore? That’s how I feel about Longoria &Belt, just move on from these old geezers…

  26. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2022 at 8:06 am

Drop Longo already. Is he gonna be healthier a year older? I doubt it. $13 mill for a backup/DH/cripple?

Fuck that. We got Villar and Davis and even Wilmer in a pinch. Move on already.

Let’s get younger by signing the 37 year old guy.

  27. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2022 at 8:09 am

Brady looked awful yesterday. He shoulda stayed retired. Rodgers as well. Likely cost him his marriage and now he’s dragging down the Bucs. Brady’s a fucking weasel I guess, but I will say, of all the guys my son met last year working in Montana, he said Brady was the nicest guy by far. Go Padres!

  28. Macdog said, on October 28, 2022 at 8:30 am

Hell no to Longo. Give him his $5M and say so longo. Five years of constant trips to the IL, enough already.

  29. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2022 at 11:08 am

I would pay good money to see DJ skating down Venice Blvd in his cutoff jeans and his Tommy Davis jersey.

Totally psyched,Mac. Just got tickets to the Nick Mason show at the Fox Theater in Oakland tonight. Might even microdose!!!
