Nearly A Wrap
Congratulations to Dusty. And the Astros definitely earned this championship.
And now we head off into the typical darkness of Winter. Somewhat different this time. Feels a little darker, a little more uncertain.
I have a plan for how I want The Flap to go out. Not sure when. It’s hard, shutting this down is going to be like putting a pet down.
I’d like to say I’m counting the days till P and C’s report but that just isn’t true. I love baseball but not the way I used to. And as we get further away from 2014 I’m finding it hard to muster up the emotion I once had for this great game. Maybe that’s a penalty for winning those 3 beauties over such a short period of time. I don’t know.
Happy for Dusty. If anyone deserves a championship, it’s him.
Good luck to whatever you decide Craig. You deserve kudos for hanging in there during the good and bad times; “even” championship years; and more recently, the “wilderness” and pandemic years.
Getting some real weather up here. No, nothing like Colorado, but still I am cracking up about these housewifes dropping their kids off at school, e.g., Wednesday, we might have had a 1/2 inch of snow and drivers were going off the road left and right . . . quite hilarious. Too many people think 4 wheel drive means you can drive in this shit. Nope, it just means that all 4 wheels go off the road if you don’t know what you are doing. Postscript – Last week, yesterday and today, 8 trees have been cut down at my property; limbs mulched; and 3 foot section logs stacked – before it gets really wet up here beginning late this evening/tomorrow.
Wow one year after being part of a 107 win team, Dubon gets a ring.
So 5 days after last night lotta stuff starts for FA guys. Still don’t think Z spends a lot on bats but…on MLBTR column about Brewers they mentioned MIL might non tender H Renfroe. He has definite RH power (.500 slugging) and is much better OF than Pederson. Even if he signs an arb eligible deal ($10 mil ish) he’d help Giants a lot and be relatively inexpensive add.
Had to look this up—Dubon got into 6 postseason games including 2 in WS, with 0 ABs.
Was listening on radio to 9th on way home from b-ball practice, and announcer said Stros pen over last 50+ innings had allowed 5 runs. Pitching was dominant factor all along.
Flightline has been retired as expected.
He raced 6 times in his incredible career.
I could name dozens of horses who may or may not have been better than him.
I don’t think you can compare eras in horse racing or anything else anymore.
Not just sports…
Flavor- I just want to thank you for this blog and letting me hang around. I know everyone here loves the game of baseball and so do I. However there sure are a lot of people here who know more about the game than I do. I pick up a lot of stuff here.
Oh hell yeah; I’ve changed mind about lot of stuff given thoughts of others. Plus all the fun stuff, like football vids from 40 years ago, people chiming in from all over the world and all the music.
Yep.
Really pleased to see Dusty win a ring as manager.
Didn’t matter to me who the team was.
Maybe if he had won with the Giants, the 3 in 5 never happens. Butterfly effect, you know.
Sounds like he won’t retire, which I guess I understand, he’s a lifer…
Holy shit. Carr on pace 500 yds passing today. anyone with Davante Adams on their fantasy team breaking out the saran wrap.
An amazing crumble by the Raiders. Outscored 27-3 midway thru the 2nd quarter.
Yeah epic fail right from start of second half k o return.
How great was that to see Dusty on top??? What a humble great man.
I loved when the interviewer first asked Dusty :What do you want to do next? PARTY!!
The player you want on your FF team today is Bengals RB Joe Mixon who has an incredible 54 points and climbing with 5TD’s!!!
Jags hold them off as Raider and Carr forget to score in second half. Heads will roll.
I second that emotion. Is it age? Something else? No matter. I remain grateful for this, for all of you — well, frankly, for everything. Adios, amigos. Off into the setting sun, squinting.
Popeye! Great movie.
Flav, this has been a blast, lots of fun, a refuge, a meeting place, a respite from the challenges out there, and basically an online bar to shoot the shit and hang out with y’all. Meeting and becoming friends with a bunch of you is just gravy on the cake.
The interwebs pretty much suck and are big waste of time and energy, but this little corner of the web has been very special.
Kudos for keeping this going so well for so long.
Thanks Chuck. The time really flew by. As much as he pissed me off I really miss twin. He kept this place hummin’. Blogs have gotten stale but back when the splash was rolling it was the shit. It was such an exciting new way we had found to express ourselves and connect with fellow fans.
Looking forward to seeing “the plan” to ease out the Flap. Weirdly, woke up this morning with the song “Where have all the flowers gone?” floating around in my head, except the words changed to “Where will all the Flappers go?…” Craig, we’ll be fine, we’re big boys. 🙂 Forever united by the experience that has been Flap Universe.
Too funny Paul! Yeah, the Splash was great till it wasn’t. You’ve done a much better job keeping the loonies out and keeping the shit fresh. No small feat.
I remember someone on the Splash often signed off his posts with “Keeping it fresh, keeping it real.” Was that you? 🙂
Nope. Don.t recall that. I just wonder what happened to Nipper.
The Splash feels like 2 lifetimes ago to me…
It was. 2005? 17 fucking years ago? Shit. I was young.
Even longer than that, although maybe before then, it wasn’t called the Splash. Pretty sure I remember posting in 2000, that year G’s finished with best record in NL but couldn’t get past the Mets in the NLDS. Also in ’02. So, yeah, more than 20 years ago.
But it’s the last 13 or so years here on the Flap that matters.
I think I found the Splash (Insider?) around that time
Loved Soul Train.
Craig thanks so much for giving us a voice and a community of Giants fans to come together. Just got home form South Bend. Saw an epic game! Great time with my adult son who lives in Chicago now. In the 2010 run to our 1st WS win and your epic “what just happened?” video immediately after he was 12! Both my kids grew up in the Flap era! They became die hards too. Thanks again for this place! Mike
you bet. This place doesn’t exist without hof’ers like you dudes
Hey Flav–just saw K Law’s FA rankings and you were right. Top 3 were in order Correa Turner and Swanson all guys he thought would get $30 mil for 6 yrs or so. Judge 4th due to concerns about tall guys holding up into mid and late 30s.
Nimmo was 7th (after Contreras and Bogarts) and he thought he’d get $25 mil per. Worried most about extensive injury hist and said any team signing him had to prepare for him to miss 30 games a season.
Feels like Farhan is more of a “Nimmo pick up” guy than a shove all in “Judge pick up” guy
Rodon has officially opted out…
this was easily Farhan’s worst move. You can’t tell me that the most coveted FA player this winter had no value at the break. He should have traded him for something and then tried to re-sign him.
If they were gonna even think about doing that, they should have given him an extension.
I think Rodon made it clear he wasn’t gonna come back.
Well, yeah.
They were never re signing Rodon to Boras special long term contract. For him it worked perfect for ONE healthy year at great value to Giants. He made ton of good starts, didn’t get hurt and pitched like true ace. If Z could get deGrom at 3 years, with fingers crossed every start he would be OK, that I could see. Bassitt is FA too.
Z was between a rock and a hard place at the trade deadline, as this August article points out.
https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/how-tricky-carlos-rodon-contract-created-wedge-giants-trade-talks
Specifically that opt out was something that other teams wanted no part of. The article explains, “. . . front offices are becoming risk-averse, and Rodón did come with what some rival evaluators considered a huge complication. If he stays healthy, he will opt out. If he gets hurt, he can simply pick up his $22.5 million option for 2023 and take another shot at free agency a year later. He wasn’t a true rental, but he also wasn’t under club control through 2023 . . .”
Agree with you Willie, this worked perfectly for Rodon. Boras is no idiot and he set up the contract perfectly for Rodon. Equally important, the Giants benefited too with last season’s outstanding performance and at the very least they’ll recoup draft pick compensation if Rodon bolts, just as they did for Madison Bumgarner and Will Smith after a similar deadline in 2019 (as the article states).
One of those comp picks turned into Kyle Harrison fwiw.
i don’t doubt that he was worth less since he was only giving a team 9 or so starts and then the post season starts. But how is that worth nothing? If you are the supposed most coveted FA pitcher on the market today?
So why didn’t we trade him at the break? BTW the hottest girl at my work is dating Sabean’s son (Sean)
No one knows what offers were. The Giants drafted ton of pitchers anyway.
Hire Sabean Now! haha….
No one knows for sure except Z, but as that article by Pavlovic suggests, front offices were scared off by the option in his contract. Dunno for certain though.
Thanks for the Flap for all these years, BF. It’s been a wonderful thing to interact with Flappers on an almost daily basis. I hope everyone can find a new place to hang out together on the web, whether at Chuck’s blog or wherever.
Kings at Warriors tonight. Sac already has 2 road Ws and managed to beat Hornets and Magic on road last week, which GS could not. Good luck to M Brown; hope Kings can be more competitive.
Does everyone even know where Chuck’s blog is? It’s a 49er blog, but we could talk baseball there, too, I’m sure.
Here’s the link:
https://ninersforever.com/
There’s a link on the side. At least there was.
Ahhh, it’s gone. Thanks Zumie. Yeah I have no problem talking baseball. Music. Warriors.
http://www.ninersforever.com
Well, as Flav has alluded to, there’s always this place to meet:
There’s still a link on the side to Unca’s blog, it’s under “The Associates.”
“no one knows what the offers were.” Yes that has been established. But for the hottest FA pitcher on the market this year, Keith Law’s #1 free agent, you don’t think anyone offered anything decent for 9 reg season starts and the post season starts? What the fuck? Are you kidding me?
Bottom line: while we don’t know what the offers were it’s entirely possible that Farhan froze up and couldn’t pull the trigger. He’s a bargain basement guy. He might be in over his head when it comes to playing with the big boys……
Personally, I’m hoping Z allows the new GM to do some GMing, you know, kinda like all the other GMs do. Z could probably use the help.
I find that hard to believe, but then again I have no idea why they were able to deal Ruf and Casali for some decent returns but didn’t make the bigger moves.
JD Davis was a good get, but like you said it wasn’t a big move.
I’d be fine giving JD a big shot at 3rd.
I could see a 2002 David Bell type season from him…
Yeah, Bell was fine, not overwhelming numbers but always seemed to make his hits count. That kind of player would be fine at 3rd if they also add some new players like Correa or Turner…
Giants gave up an A ball prospect and an AA SP for Kris Bryant, not ML level talent. Bryant was a rental but not coming off major injury issue or with built in opt out contrat. My guess is Z set a minimum bar for what he wanted in return and no one met it. So he said eff it, we’re keeping him and see what happens. Dunno what you think other teams were offering, but Z and FO didn’t like it. I just don’t buy that he’s in over his head as POBO.
You gonna end this blog the day democracy dies?
Welcome to the shit-show.
There is a real possibility that Oregon turns red tomorrow.
Well, and everyone from the little old lady running the local polling place to the admins to the AGs are all gonna be election deniers.
And every republican running has said we win or it’s rigged.
Oh, joy.
Sometimes I wonder how these FA negotiations are conducted – especially the biggest ones.
Like do the Yanks make Judge an offer and tell him to go shopping and not sign with anyone else without giving them a chance to beat it? And what if another team blows that offer away and tells Judge he either signs it immediately or it’s off the table?
Something else to consider about trade deadline–SF at time was .500 team (51-51), 5 games back of Padres. I’d think it’s possible Z was not about trading Rodon to any NL contenders, and there wasn’t much market in AL either. Tampa wouldn’t spend that kind of salary $$ nor Cleveland, Jays already had Gausman at $20 mil, Stros were loaded, yada yada.
I thought the Yanks would go for him…
Kings let Steph dribble the clock out down 1 with 10 seconds left. Derp!
O/U was 231…
No shit!
I don’t want Judge on the Giants for an insane contract but I’d offer 7/300 which won’t be nearly good enough as usual…
He gonna get at least 8/350…
Happy birthday Zumiee . . . How old today???
Stat I look at boxscores shows what did Kings in: they hit same number of 3s GS did, but Warriors were 30-50 from 2, Kings 23-51. Sabonis I think (might have been Fox) missed one right in front of hoop in last minute that rolled off rim. But yes, not a good sign it took 47 from Curry for them to hold off Sac.
Yeah, Klay is struggling pretty badly. Wiseman and Kuminga are REALLY struggling. On offense.
Defense is completely gone. Wiseman is just fouling with his hands as guys blow by him and he’s out of position. Kuminga needs to attack the basket and stop jacking 3s. He has potential but looks out of control on his drives. He looked great his first couple months in the league but now seems lost.
Ever since that game he got called for carrying the ball 3 times Poole has been messed up. First half last night, in 10 minutes he had 0 points/rebounds/assists/steals. Um what are you doing out there?
Career scrubini Scott Hastings called that line in box a “trillion”, 1 (minutes) followed by all zeros.
Calling that shit is pretty funny when you watch any game and see that happen, oh, 30-40 times.
Mattingly getting another crack at the HOF.
Does The Thrill deserve the same consideration?
A little like Posey and Munson?
https://stathead.com/baseball/player-comparison.cgi?player_id2=clarkwi02&type=b&player_id1=mattido01&sum=0&request=1
With Harold Baines as the baseline, sure, why not?
I think all 4 should be in there because of the way they played the game. They were game changers.
Bonds also gets another crack at it, one of eight along with Donnie, Belle, Clemens, McGriff, Murphy, Palmeiro and Schilling.
Throw Dale Murphy into the mix as well. Based on his play vs the Giants, he’s a shoo-in.
With the new shift limit rule and barring some freak accident, I gotta think Texas won’t be the only team checking in on BB9.
In Chron talking about GM meetings there is mention of Phils as team that went from .500 to 87 Ws and all the way to WS (11 post season wins) by diving heavy into FA market. The Great San Dawg said something to me couple weeks ago about how “the free agent market worked out pretty well for the Phillies,” very true. Castellanos only one that sucked out of group that included Harper Realmuto Wheeler and Schwarber.
Oregon turning red? Coupled with that dumb shit Walker being a Senator, this would nearly equate to how I felt the day after Trump became President . . . Howard Stern said on his radio show Monday ahead of the midterms. “They always talk about another Civil War. I think there is going to be one….You got to be outta your f—— skull (if Walker is elected).”
Other than Strom Thurmond, who was essentially in a walking coma his last few years in the Senate, Herschel has to be one of the most unfit Senate candidates in modern history…
Where does Fetterman rank on your fitness scale?
He’s fine.
He can think and pull the trigger for a vote, doctor says he’s on the mend.
2 current senators had strokes earlier this year, they’re on the mend.
Staff does EVERYTHING for any senator.
Herschel is an ignoramnus, a wife beater, a deadbeat dad and a professional liar, just to start.
I’ll take Fetterman any day over that…
Yeah blade the Republicans saturated the state with continual adds. They were all total bullshit but there are a lot of struggling families up here right now and they might just grasp at straws.
“. . . there are a lot of struggling families up here right now and they might just grasp at straws.”
I always assume that Republican blue collar voters are stupid, but on reflection, the way you put it Winder, is perhaps, more accurate. I still maintain that they are ill-informed, but maybe that, coupled with what you said, is why they vote the way they do.
They vote out of fear also.
I just voted for the first time in many years.
Anyone who knows my name and DOB could have voted as me…
Actually not my DOB – my address.
You walk up to the desk for your district (no waiting).
The very pleasant lady asked me for the first 3 letters of my last name and my full first name.
Asked for my address.
Turned her computer screen around – and had me sign the screen with some with kind of computer pen as long as my DOB was correct (which I don’t think would have mattered).
Handed me a paper ballot to fill out and sent me on my way.
When you complete it, you manually feed it into the voting machine.
Then you get a little “I voted” sticker and go back to whatever you do to kill the day…
OK, just do that 40,000 more times today to influence the vote.
My eyes are pretty bad but I think I voted for Led Zeppelin…
Love to hear from anyone who watches the new Mays special
Shea was in on this one and talked about it Chron today. Mays was helluva athlete as HS kid, just wonder if he would choose baseball if he were at that age today.
Rickey Henderson’s first love was football and baseball was afterthought he came around to because of injury.
I always thought Rickey had the perfect build for a RB…
Exactly, that was his thing. Bio is really good read, early part has lot about him growing up in Oakland and other famous athletic families who moved there from Texas and nearby states.
If I got to pick an all-time team Rickey would be my left fielder. Mays in center and Frank Robinson in right.
I just watched “Say Hey, Willie Mays!”, Fucking brilliant, especially the outtakes at the end.
Thanks man. Have to catch this.
I’d go Barry-Willie-Henry…
I’d go Barry, Willie and Roberto as starters, Hank and Frank on the bench
Teddy, Willie, Roberto.
“Happy birthday Zumiee . . . How old today???”
Thanks! 62. My birthday is sometimes on election day. JFK and Trump were both elected on my birthday. The good and the bad of election days.
Someone be sure and eventually wake up Garland from that long nap he’s been taking. He’s the Rip Van Winkle of Attorney Generals.
No shit. the end of democracy is nigh. Not really wanting to turn on the TV now.
Just scrolled quickly through CNN website updates. You might also not want to do that….
How the game has changed. This about DiMaggio: At the time of his retirement after the 1951 season, he ranked 5th all time in career home runs (361). 5th all-time, at that time, only 361. He’s 85th on the list now; current 5th on the list is A-Rod with 696 HRs.
Good stuff . . . Didn’t know that.
Fun fact for the day…
I was thinking Williams too Unca. Obviously a snub at Willie, but most folks back in the day (particularly, sportswriters) almost always said, that DiMaggio was the “greatest living baseball player.” He died, and Willie got dissed again, with media saying that Williams was the “greatest living baseball player.” It was only after those dudes passed away, that Mays got his due.
Anywho, my 3 are Mays, Williams, and Suzuki.
Please don’t let the Flap end with the banned political crap…
Agree. That last comment was my last.
@Winder: As Reds fan growing up here in Bay Area, I loved Frank Robinson (and CF Vada Pinson). Poor guy had to battle Mays Aaron and Clemente to get into NL All Star OF in 60s before he went to O’s. What an era for baseball fans.
HBD Zum! Great pic in Flap Bucket of Zum rocking the Birmingham Black Barons hat. Shea said the new documentary went into some background on Mays’ days playing for them.
Yes, they did have some of the Black Barons stuff. There is some great footage in the doc. I loved it and thought it was totally worth checking out.
Pinson got so screwed out of ROY won by McCovey because he slightly exceeded one of those rookie thresholds in ’58…
Willedav- I loved the way Frank played the game( I liked Pinson too) he was a true competitor. Frank made things happen
Yeah, just watched it. Nothing that wasn’t already out there, but a lot of great footage of Willie in his early days and prime, and the back-and-forth with Jackie Robinson that I wasn’t aware of. The end is pretty funny.
How could there possibly be anything new about Mays except how he lives now?
Hasn’t it all been said and written?
Same for JFK, Manson, etc.
They just keep churning shit out.
I remember in 2013 they were supposed to release all this classified stuff 50 years after JFK’s assassination.
Whatever became of that? I don’t remember a damn thing…
One of the things that came out of Chron story was that Shea was talking in person to Mays about having problems reaching Hank Aaron, and thought he was being ditched by his agent. Mays said, “What?” And called Aaron on speakerphone right away and 2 of them talked for awhile in Shea’s presence.
Can you imagine being there? I’d have asked Aaron what it felt like to watch Mays whack 4 bombs out of his own home yard in Milwaukee, or how he felt night Mays ended the 15 inning Spahn-Marichal match up, and hitting at the Stick in general. Or all the AS games NL won with Mays and his Af Am buddies dominating the lily white AL.
The most forgotten great hitter seems to be Stan Musial.
Probably the closest thing the NL had to Ted Williams…
