A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Jomboy Rules

Speaking of twitter accounts that are worth following, you really should give this guy a follow. He’s a diehard Yankee fan (he’s also the guy who exposed the Astros for trashcan cheating) and he puts out awesome short vids like this one.

another fun tweet. This guy is great but the dude standing to his right deserves honorable mention.

    • snarkk said, on November 17, 2022 at 9:32 am

Most NFL play by play guys are homers, but this guy is beyond the pale…

      • Flavor said, on November 17, 2022 at 10:24 am

it’s football. They’re supposed to be homers

      • snarkk said, on November 17, 2022 at 6:05 pm

        Yeah, I get it.
But, usually the color analyst is the real red-meat homer, like Tim Ryan for the Niners.
Papa is a homer, but I think this Minnesota P by P dude out-homers him…

It will be interesting to see how much banning shift impacts LHs or if rules would still have to be tweaked. In minors, stats didn’t show all that much upside for BA on ground balls. Difference would be how many of those line drives into OF would fall in without 2b playing way out on the grass into short RF.

Still, sounds like you might be talking about few singles a year for someone like Joc. The SS can still play couple feet outside 2b and take away grounder up the middle.
Bottom line, you hit ball on the ground you’re gonna make lot of outs.

    • Winder said, on November 17, 2022 at 9:00 am

It should definitely affect the pitchers without pinpoint accuracy. Instead of moving the players they’ll have to move the ball.

    • unca_chuck said, on November 17, 2022 at 2:24 pm

What’s to stop the LFer from covering short RF?

Attn.: Kings fans, your top draft pick rookie Keegan Murray has twin brother Kris, a junior still at U of Iowa. Dropped 29 points/11 boards at RAC in Jersey as Iowa knocked off Seton Hall 83-67. Very smooth scorer, with same stolid unflustered game face who can knock down 3s, attack rim and rebound.

    • Macdog said, on November 17, 2022 at 9:48 am

It was at the Prudential Center, aka The Rock.

      • willedav said, on November 17, 2022 at 10:18 am

Ah thanks! Is that where Hall play home games or is it different from an on campus site?

    • Macdog said, on November 17, 2022 at 12:12 pm

Yeah, except for one game at on-campus Walsh Gym, Seton Hall plays all its home games at the Newark arena.

The Dubs just might have a shot at him if this season goes the way it has.

Interesting game for the Kings tonight. The Kings are coming off two big emotional wins for them: a rare victory over the Warriors, and the solid performance on the TNT game vs. the depleted Nets. It was the first time the Kings had been on TNT in 4 years.
So here comes the Spurs, a St. Louis Cardinals-type of relentless zombie team. Every year, they just relentlessly push forward. If the Kings show up flat after the recent wins, the Spurs will end the Kings’ modest winning streak.

    • willedav said, on November 17, 2022 at 12:37 pm

They’re tanking Zum, plus they are shorthanded iirc. No coincidence they are only team GS has played well against lately.

MLBTR column says Marlins bringing back Jeff Conine the Barbarian.
Um don’t mention his name to J T Snow.
Gad what an awful play, end of 2003 NLDS with annoying Pudge tagging him out at plate on throw from LF by Conine.

  9. unca_chuck said, on November 17, 2022 at 2:21 pm

Never heard this version so I didn’t know there was a huge uproar over it. Apparently it almost got Ernie Harwell fired as he recommended Jose Feliciano. This is the 1968 World Series.

    • willedav said, on November 17, 2022 at 4:08 pm

Thanks, it was really nicely done. hadn’t heard that in long time.
um, ’68 was rough…different/difficult time, Detroit not an exception.

      • willedav said, on November 17, 2022 at 4:59 pm

Game 5 started Tigers 3 game comeback from 3-1 deficit to win it all behind M Lolich who won that one and Game 7 over Bob Gibson.
6 months earlier April 4th MLK had been assassinated in Memphis.

      • snarkk said, on November 17, 2022 at 6:29 pm

My parents and I went on a drive trip back east in early summer ’68. We passed through Detroit, went on the main drag there (Michigan Ave?) and passed by the old Tiger Stadium. All I remember was that the town, one year past the ’67 riots, looked like it had been hit by a massive bomb. Seemed like miles of shuttered and burned out buildings. Crazy. It may still be mostly that way.
        I’ve never been back…

    • willedav said, on November 17, 2022 at 4:21 pm

Month later Nixon was elected president.

    • zumiee said, on November 17, 2022 at 4:41 pm

Feliciano’s version is beautiful and great. I also hadn’t heard that in a long time.

    • Locojuan said, on November 17, 2022 at 7:29 pm

Thanks for posting, I don’t recall ever hearing that. What a great rendition.

    • James said, on November 17, 2022 at 7:49 pm

Never heard that before. It’s, like, listenable. Amazing.

  10. zumiee said, on November 17, 2022 at 4:46 pm

I’m not a huge fan of our national anthem, and it has nothing to do with politics or anything like that; I just don’t think it’s a particularly well-written song.
I’d prefer a couple of verses of “America the Beautiful” as our anthem. And it would be much easier for people to sing. “The Star Spangled Banner” is hard to sing.

    • Flavor said, on November 17, 2022 at 7:51 pm

it’s a terrible song. Who among us has it on our spotify playlist? Exactly….

    • snarkk said, on November 18, 2022 at 2:23 pm

The melody to the SSBanner is an old English drinking song, per what I’ve read.
IMO, it’s horrible, and the singing of it before every game should be stopped.
I’m down with America the Beautiful as a replacement. Sing it once a week, weekday or weekend. Familiarity breeds contempt.
Let it be a surprise right before the game…

Re: football announcers: I don’t get to watch full games, so I digest the NFL from the 15-minute video game summaries. Not sure if I’ve just become a grumpy old man (certainly at least partially true) or if things have changed, but man, I find myself having to turn the volume way low when I watch the vids, for 2 reasons: one, I don’t remember play by play guys shouting so much, like every play is just the most amazing thing they’ve ever seen. Color analysts could get excited from time to time, but the yelling and shouting by the play by play guys is just unbearable to these ears. And two, often it seems like for more than half of the plays, the color analyst is rambling on about something while the new play is underway and the play by play guy finally says something about the play after it’s over. That one guy often paired with Buck, not sure who he is; he sounds like Badger from Breaking Bad, which makes it kinda funny but mostly causes me to yell at my laptop “shut the fuck up already!” Maybe it’s just me. Ok, that’s my morning rant over coffee, fruit, and an omelette sitting out on the patio of a homestay on the beach near Danang, a lovely morning. There, I feel better already.

Flap update: Still no time table. I am not trying to be a bitch about this but as I said it’s a hard thing for me to put down. And I’m busy enough right now to not feel the pressure of a deadline. I still love interacting with all of you so let’s just keep it open ended until it isn’t anymore.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on November 17, 2022 at 8:16 pm

      Open-ended is good…

  13. Flavor said, on November 17, 2022 at 7:54 pm

Snarkk how bout an update on your new life? How’s the house? The community?

  14. djloo27 said, on November 17, 2022 at 8:59 pm

Feliciano’s version of California Dreamin’ is damn good too…

    • willedav said, on November 18, 2022 at 7:06 am

Yeah that’s nice, thanks Loo. In the yt thread a guy called Mark Taylor said he had 45 of it with his hitLight my Fire on other side. Love when he improvises and breaks into Spanish near end.

George Benson did great version of California Dreamin (no vocals!) in 1972 on LP White Rabbit for CTI. Wes Montgomery too. There is a commercial where opening notes of Benson’s hit single “Breezin” is background music. Tremendous musician and I don’t begrudge him making some $$ off more commercial tunes.

    • willedav said, on November 18, 2022 at 6:56 am

Ah so many sports writers use it and I read those from locals and others I respect. Often so much nonsense behind them due to trolls, like everywhere I guess.

  18. Locojuan said, on November 18, 2022 at 7:07 am

I keep forgetting that La Stella is still on the team.

    • alleykat69 said, on November 18, 2022 at 9:31 am

We’re all trying to forget LaStinko is still on the team Loco!
Unfortunately Morrco Mole will not let his 1st big league wading pool splash go.
He’s committed not to look 👀 like a complete buffoon on this one..

See the Giants DFA’d Garcia &Vosler .Thought they got some good mileage out of Garcia over the years, till last year, Vosler a little surprising to me, has a nice contact swing, so so glove work, but I think the Giants are going to buy all in with Villar, which is the right thing to do, plus anybody heard of a kid last name Westley who bats LH and plays 3rd as well? Younger cheaper move instead of Vosler I assume for the 40 man roster..

    • djloo27 said, on November 18, 2022 at 11:53 am

I challenge anyone to come up with a wackier sports name than that.
My old favorite was a college basketball player named Paris Drain…

    • Winder said, on November 18, 2022 at 12:28 pm

Since that article says that no one in the US has that first name or at least no more than 5 people so that it’s not noticed. If I was young and was planning to have kids I just might name one of em Broth.

  22. alleykat69 said, on November 18, 2022 at 4:18 pm

I guess if I was part of the new millennium world I could name my kid Broth Goth..

Giants and Yaz agree to $6.1 mil deal to avoid arb.
Last year slash line: .214/.305/.392 did lead team with 31 doubles fwiw

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on November 18, 2022 at 6:13 pm

Bit of an ugly slash line, but an excellent RFer (key position at China Basin) and tends to go on the occasional hot streak. Go out and get another good hitting OFer and Yazz’s numbers wouldn’t be as much of a detriment…

  25. djloo27 said, on November 18, 2022 at 7:19 pm

That’s a sharp looking floor at the Chase Center.
    Is it new?

  26. Locojuan said, on November 18, 2022 at 7:36 pm

I just read that the Giants are going after Kenley Jansen. Is he the player formally known as Broth Goblin?

      • Locojuan said, on November 18, 2022 at 8:08 pm

Never thought Joc and Jansen (if true) would be the first priorities this offseason.

  27. willedav said, on November 18, 2022 at 8:44 pm

Yes Loo I think floor is new look. Randle has skills but man shot selection isn’t one of them. That said, no idea why he spends so much time so far away from hoop or why Knicks run 5 out.

    • djloo27 said, on November 18, 2022 at 9:03 pm

      Basketball 2022 I guess.

      Dom Smith non-tendered by Mets.
Lefty 1B could be a nice cheap fit.
Excellent fielder who might hit with regular work…

      • djloo27 said, on November 18, 2022 at 9:08 pm

Sure I’d rather have Josh Bell…

      • Macdog said, on November 18, 2022 at 9:56 pm

And you wanted to trade Wilmer for him.

  28. djloo27 said, on November 18, 2022 at 9:13 pm

    I vaguely remember Tom Meschery.
He was a decent player, but I didn’t expect to see his retired jersey up in the rafters…
