A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Disgusting Win

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 5, 2022

I’m just sick to death about this Grappy news. Question: When was the last time some rando QB took over mid season and brought a team to the Super Bowl? Did Brady do that with Bledsoe? I can’t remember if this is the possible comp or not. Either way, anyone think Brock Purdy is the next Tom Brady?

Don’t even bring up Cam Newton’s name. He sucked even when he was good. All Cam cares about is Cam. He would be a complete waste to sign.

Uh….at least Kapernick’s well rested?

Ugh. What a waste of a great defense. We’re done this year.

also, for those who follow fantasy, I finished first in last night’s Showdown Game tying 68 other people and beating 99,088 other contestants.

Thumbs up. Was it just the sun night game? The beat down and containing J Taylor may have knocked me out of my league playoffs because opponent had Geno and Metcalf and Niners defense and got 27 points in about three seconds after I just tied it. But I still have Olave and a decent game with a td should get me the win.

I think Niners have to go knocking in Fitzpatrick’s door and Brady did step in and rad them to first Super Bowl win for the Pats against the much favored Rams that year.

yes just the Sun night game. That’s why so many ties up top. Still, beating 99,088 other contestants is nothing to shake a stick at.

I’d take Fitz 1000 times over Newton

    • unca_chuck said, on December 5, 2022 at 2:41 pm

Olave is the real deal. Potential ROY in my book. He’s gonna put up like 1,400 yards as a rook.

Brady took over when Bledsoe got hurt in game 2 in 2001. So, yeah, not mid-season. Hmm, thought you might be a little happier about the win, despite now losing 1st and 2nd QBs, but the team overall beat a pretty good team… Not that it matters, but personally, the name Brock has always been somewhat irksome… certainly Lou Brock aside.

My old buddy ‘Skins fan used to brag about Joe Gibbs being best coach ever because he won SB with chump QBs, like Mark Rypien in 91. Among Gibbs’ assistants on that 91 team were Jim Hanifan and former Chief great Emmitt Thomas. Thomas is still alive at age 79, undrafted out of tiny Bishop college in Texas. HOF corner, SB champ 2 x time AFL champ.

  5. willedav said, on December 5, 2022 at 6:54 am

I would say there are definitely lot of teams who at this point in season are “done”, but SF hardly one of them. You could make interesting list of chump QBs who’s team won SB with them at helm.

  6. Flavor said, on December 5, 2022 at 7:36 am

But, you know, here’s the flipside: Purdy made some nice accurate throws and took some big hits. And he doesn’t have to be Tom Brady to ride the coat tails of this D to the SB. But he can’t be NIck Mullens, either. I actually checked the odds, Niners are 12-1 to win it all which are terrible odds. Had they drifted up into the 20’s though it’s not the craziest thing to bet on with the D they have.

  7. Flavor said, on December 5, 2022 at 8:25 am

my main man Chris came up with a good comp: maybe not Nick Mullens but how about Nick Foles?

i just like seeing that you’re reading the comments.

    • Macdog said, on December 5, 2022 at 8:43 am

Foles is with the Colts, I’m not sure how the Niners could get him.

    • Macdog said, on December 5, 2022 at 8:49 am

Ha, my bad, you wanted a chump comp. Maybe the best one is Jeff Hostetler, who took over late in ’90 for the Giants and won the Super Bowl.

      • willedav said, on December 5, 2022 at 9:14 am

Ha, first one came to my mind.

      • willedav said, on December 5, 2022 at 9:17 am

        Trent Dilfer#2 in list.

I just checked the ESPN web site and their top story is Source: Panthers expected to cut Baker Mayfield.

I just read The Athletic article on the voting rules. Each member gets to choose only 3 names. Players can be considered more than once.

It ain’t over until WE say it’s over. I have no idea how Purdy is gonna do, but all he has to do is follow the script. All our offense is is short passes and runs. Purdy didn’t look overmatched, which is huge, and the pass to Kittle where he got blasted was very nice. Fucking Shanahan threw more on 4th down with Purdy yesterday than he did all season with Garoppolo.

The big question is was this just an adrenaline rush performance?

This game was great for Purdy Mouth, but the reality is continuing this. But it’s not like he’s stepping in for Dan Marino and being asked to throw 400 yards a game. He’s just got to hit his reads and keep the chains moving.

This is eminently doable. Brad Johnson won with the Bucs. Dilfer with the Ravens. Look at Bradshaw’s first Super Bowl numbers. He went 9-17 for 200 yards or some shit.

    • djloo27 said, on December 5, 2022 at 10:24 am

Miss Purdy was eminently doable in 1963…

    • Macdog said, on December 5, 2022 at 10:34 am

Roethlisberger was 9-21 for 123 yards and 2 INTs in Steelers’ SB 40 win over Seahawks. Best pass by a Steeler all game was Randle El 43-yard TD to Ward.

      • unca_chuck said, on December 5, 2022 at 2:34 pm

That Super Bowl was a tragedy. The Seahawks (and I’m no fan of theirs) were hosed on 3 terrible game-altering calls.

Trea Turner to phils, $300 mil/11 years.
Twins set to meet with Boras this week. He reps bunch of FAs, including Correa.

Drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie still alive at age 83. This from my ancient All Music Guide to Jazz: “Purdie’simpeccable timing and mastery of backbeats and grooves are celebrated. He was CTI’s house drummer in the late 60s and early 70s and worked with Grover Washington Jr. and George Benson, and with several other musicians. Purdie toured with (King) Curtis and Aretha Franklin in 1970 and was Franklin’s music director until 1975.” per Ron Wynn.

Per some dude at ESPN . . .

The Mets will need to get between 5 and 6 bWAR each from Scherzer and Verlander to make these valuations work from an actuarial standpoint. Over the next two seasons, they will be paying two pitchers nearly $87 million per season. According to Cot’s Contracts, that’s more than the total opening day payroll of eight different teams going into last season.

    • snarkk said, on December 5, 2022 at 12:39 pm

Both of these older dudes are one slider away from elbow oblivion…

      • blade3colorado said, on December 5, 2022 at 12:57 pm

I think there is tremendous pressure for the Yankees to make a splash after what the Mets did. Consequently, 24, maybe 48 hours – Judge will sign with the Yankees, Giants, or another suitor (which frankly, I think is zero – Yanks or Gmen). Additionally, Judge’s agent knows more or less what the market is after Turner’s signing.

      • snarkk said, on December 5, 2022 at 1:21 pm

Looks like Phills want to ensure this year was not a post-season fluke. Serious talent upgrade with Turner. Good to see LA is not the uber attractive player place some make it out to be…

  16. alleykat69 said, on December 5, 2022 at 1:02 pm

I would be all in on Baker Mayfield though he probably won’t get to the Niners in the wavier claim at 24.But if he does clear waivers? his contract is only 1.5 for the rest of the season, chump change. They need an experience QB as the backup not a guy like Josh Johnson seriously? He’s traveled more than Johnny Cash as “I’ve been everywhere man” in football..

49ers season projections by starting QB now with Purdy moving forward for playoffs
    90%
    70%
    12%
    2%
    o.5%
    Jimmy G make playoffs 99%
    Win division 91%
    Make Conf Champ 41%
    Make SB 18%
    Win SB 7%

    • Winder said, on December 5, 2022 at 1:29 pm

kat- Not sure that Mayfield would work for us. We just signed a QB a couple of days ago Jacob Eason and my guess is he’s buried in our playbook at this very moment.

  17. alleykat69 said, on December 5, 2022 at 2:28 pm

Winder.. if the 49ers are counting on Josh Johnson or Jacob Eason as the backup, they’re screwed they both suck..

    • Winder said, on December 5, 2022 at 2:51 pm

Kat what I meant was Mayfield doesn’t fit the team model. The Niners have a very cohesive team attitude. I don’t think he would work very well here.

  18. unca_chuck said, on December 5, 2022 at 2:37 pm

Well, if we are down to our 4th QB, we will seriously be behind the 8 ball regardless.

I think the Rams will take Mayfield just to keep him away from us a la Codty Ross and the Padres. They have their own QB issues with Stafford going on the IR. Too bad they couldn’t do us a solid and beat the fucking Seahawks.

    • Winder said, on December 5, 2022 at 2:52 pm

I hope the Rams take him.

  19. willedav said, on December 5, 2022 at 4:48 pm

    Dolphins sign OT, lol.
As Irish K said on Chuck’s blog, if Purdy can beat blitz with short accurate passes, then that will be end of that. so chess match begins, Shanahan vs. D co-ordinators with plans in mind for Purdy.
Mayfield’s best work in long time were those commercials at Stadium. Better actor than QB.

  20. unca_chuck said, on December 5, 2022 at 5:16 pm

Our whole offense is short passes. It’s not like we are gonna change things. This is what we are. And this is what we’ve been.

From the small sample size, Purdy moves better than Jimmy and has a little more zip on his passes.

As long as they keep it simple, we should be fine.

    • snarkk said, on December 5, 2022 at 5:38 pm

I thought the same thing, from highlights I saw.
Purdy looked more than serviceable for his first real game play. He’s quick afoot, makes decisive throws, with zip on it. He can only get better practicing with the first team and some real games under his belt…

    Kirstie Alley dead at 71.
Gene Alley is still alive at 82.
Very underrated SS. Mazeroski’s DP mate.

Now if only something could be done about Triples Alley…

  22. zumiee said, on December 5, 2022 at 6:14 pm

Purdy kind of reminded me of Jeff Garcia. A high football IQ quarterback with limited physical ability and size who really gets the most out of what he has.
If Purdy can be Garcia-esque the rest of this season, I’m good with that.

    • zumiee said, on December 5, 2022 at 6:16 pm

There’s things I like about Jimmy G as QB, but he’s just never really struck me as a high football IQ quarterback.

  23. unca_chuck said, on December 5, 2022 at 6:51 pm

Yep. You look at the improvement of guys like Matt Schaub and MattRyan, and even RG IIIs rookie season, and they all improved dramatically under Shanahan. Jimmy? Not so much. He’s pretty much the same guy that we got from New England. You look at his first 5 games here, and he’s worse.

But, welcome to the NFL, Brock Purdy. Your first start is against the best (arguably) QB in NFL history.

What is insane is Brock Purdy was 6 months old when Tom Brady first set foot on an NFL football field.

    • djloo27 said, on December 5, 2022 at 7:03 pm

      Remember Dieter Brock?

      • unca_chuck said, on December 5, 2022 at 7:48 pm

Heh heh!!!!!! Almost spit my beer out on that one!

Dieter had that solid year with the Rams and lost the NFC championship game? Ottawa Rough Rider?

Just hope Purdy doesn’t turn out like Chuck Longley!!!

Hey, remember when the Niners had Norm Snead? Urk.

Kirstie Alley reminds of someone who burned the candle at both ends and in the middle. She wasn’t cheated at living life.
