A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Padres Pull Off Another One

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 8, 2022

While Farhan continues to sit on his hands, AJ Preller continues to make bold moves. I personally wasn’t targeting Bogaerts but he’s yet another star who makes a team already better than us, better than us. It’s easy to say “Boy I’m sure glad we aren’t getting saddled with a deal like that” but you know what? How many years you guys got left? How many years are we now stuck behind LA and SD? I’d like to see us be competitive in the NL West at least a few more times before I die.

Right now, LA and SD are so far ahead of us it’s embarrassing. And with the payroll flexibility Farhan has he should be the one feeling most embarrassed…..

Wow I missed that Bogaerts deal…that is ridiculous stupid money. I think I posited here yday the question that did Tatis wear out his welcome in SD. Would they move him? Would they deal within the division? Would we want him??? I say yes because we lack such star power and we have the money that maybe very few clubs would want to spend money on. Red Sox certainly would certainly be interested…but 11 years and $280 mill??? That is stupid.

    • Locojuan said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:28 am

I read where their thought was to move Tatis to the OF when he comes back and in adding Bogaerts they are already thinking ahead in case Machado leaves next year when he’s a FA.

      • Flavor said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:35 am

they have a plan, a back up plan and probably back up plans for the back up plans. We have Farhan lookie-looing in the Brebbia aisle

        True dat.

        True dat indeed

      • Giant Head said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:59 am

I actually don’t think Machado would is a free agent. Soto you may be referencing. But looks like there is still another arb year for him in 2024. Hader Darvish and Snell are all free agents after the season.

      • Locojuan said, on December 8, 2022 at 7:30 am

Machado has an opt out clause in the 5th year of his 10 year contract which is next year.
Soto has another arb year in 24 and is a FA in 25.

  2. Locojuan said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:39 am

Flav, you hit the nail on the head for me. I turn 68 next month and would love to see SF in the WS a few more times before I hang up my cleats. The Giants have mucho room under the cap and the club is worth billions now, time to move up to the big kid’s table. Get some cornerstone players to make the team competitive now and that can also be built around when/if the farm kids make it to the big city.

  3. Giant Head said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:39 am

Padres with Soto’s expected arb # is going to be $46-$47 mill over the luxury tax if Bogaerts is at his average contract dollars. Maybe they back end more of that. Do they move Soto, Tatis, or others to get the luxury tax line down but starting in ‘24 they will be $50-55 mill under the tax so they could even extend Soto now and lower is expected ‘23 salary. Damn they are in pretty good shape. We have no hope in signing an Ohtani or Soto.

    • Locojuan said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:49 am

Man, Soto needs to have a hell of a year to even match that $425 mil 13year offer he turned down from the Nats.

I watched the “Summer of soul” concert in Harlem 1969 recently, and the 5th D were in it, doing live version of Aquarius. Great tune, and they were interviewed too, Ms. McCoo and Billy Davis. Davis said he brought Gospel background into the chorus, improvising to get crowd fired up. Btw there was great gospel music in that concert. M y hero Mongo Santamaria too!

Bogaerts seemed weakest of the 4 to me–power had dropped off a lot in hitter friendly yard, and unlikely to even be a SS going forward. SD I guess moves him to 2b and Cronenworth takes 1b to cover for losing Bell and Myers.

Wonder if Z is pivoting toward players where OB/defense are more important than slugging and HRs since he was unable to get Judge. Bart Davis Villar Joc and healthy Haniger should hit some HRs but nothing like “outlier” (well said by Unc and Loo) 2021 was.

  5. willedav said, on December 8, 2022 at 7:23 am

Beside injuries that ruined some of SF Giants last season, it also hurt development of minors guys. Luciano had back problems, Wil Wilson missed lot of time at Sac as did Isan Diaz who was hitting well like Villar but got hurt in September when he could have been called up. Matt Boyd had another issue and they dumped him off to Seattle where he only pitched 13 innings.

    • Flavor said, on December 8, 2022 at 7:51 am

that’s another thing. Could they ever fucking one time hit on a guy from the minors? Villar? That’s who we’re pinning our hopes on? Back in the day it was Posey, Timmy, Cain, fucking Bumgarner and Pablo and Dirrrrty Sanchez. WHERE ARE THOSE YOUNG GUYS NOW?????

      • willedav said, on December 8, 2022 at 8:30 am

Only year out, hopefully. Schmitt Luciano Harrison, maybe couple more (smiley face goes here).

      • unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2022 at 9:08 am

You look at Sabean’s draft track record before and after Posey, Timmy, Cain, Belt, Pablo, and Bummie and it is pretty mediocre. He caught fire for those 7 years and it built the foundation for 3 rings.

Kyle Harrison looks like the real deal, but the rest are all question marks. Baseball is the hardest game to draft for.

  6. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2022 at 8:06 am

Is 6/$120 mill not enough for Nimmo? Correa’s gonna get 8/$320?

Maybe we go all-in on Rodon.

    • Giant Head said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:13 am

Makes me sick to my stomach thinking Correa making $40 mill a year. But probably what will take but something tells me we should pass. Ninmo at $120 seems like a steal now.

  7. willedav said, on December 8, 2022 at 8:54 am

Loo, how about a hint on pitcher who gave up HRs to 3 Alou brothers?
I only looked up career totals for Matty and Jesus. 31 for Matty, 32 for “Jay.”
Matty died 2011 age 72, Jesus is still alive at age 80, Felipe too age 87.

  8. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2022 at 9:06 am

    Phil Neikro?

  9. Flavor said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:05 am

Schmitt Luciano Harrison…..I’ll believe it when I see it.

    • Giant Head said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:15 am

Harrison only one I think is maybe a lock but only maybe. But no hitter since Panda, Belt and Crawford of any note after Posey.

  10. James said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:21 am

They are going to be outbid by the Dodgers for Correa and reject or be rejected by Swanson. We might get Nimmo, Senga, and the other Rogers twin. I hope I’m wrong about Correa and right about the other 3.

    • Macdog said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:44 am

Who knows how much truth there is to this, but Rosenthal recently said that the Dodgers “are not pursuing shortstop Carlos Correa in part out of concern that a sizable portion of their fan base would not welcome the move” given Correa’s connection to the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

  11. willedav said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:23 am

Phil Niekro is pretty good guess Unc. Gave up 40 HRs in 1970 and began career 1964 with Braves in game vs. Giants (while Alou bros were all still playing) with ATL. Btw, Jesus (with Hou) hit 1 in 1970, and only 18 in 6 years with Giants. Niekro gave up 482 HRs in long career–would that be most ever?

    • djloo27 said, on December 8, 2022 at 11:07 am

Hint: This guy gave up more homers than Niekro!

      • James said, on December 8, 2022 at 11:31 am

        Gotta be Roberts.

      • willedav said, on December 8, 2022 at 11:53 am

Ha I did look that stat up. Jamie Moyer is leader with 522.
One other option beside Roberts who pitched in same era, James.

      • James said, on December 8, 2022 at 12:01 pm

Roberts was always cited for his prodigious bombs allowed total back in the day, when Catfish Hunter and Jenkins were pitching for teams that were better than the Giants. Roberts is just the reflexive, go to exemplar.

      • djloo27 said, on December 8, 2022 at 3:06 pm

        Jenkins it is, James…

  12. willedav said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:37 am

Found box score for Niekro debut April 15 1964 at Stick for Milwaukee Braves and it’s hilarious.
Giants won 10-8, scoring all 10 runs in 3rd inning that featured 3 run HR from Mays, 5 other hits 5 walks 2 wild pitches. All runs scored after 2 were out and bases empty, Niekro getting last one vs. only batter he faced.
Top of Braves lineup: Felipe, Lee Maye, Aaron Mathews joe Torre.
Giants had Mac in LF/Cepeda at 1b, and Mac replaced Cepeda late game at 1b.
Jack Sanford had 3 run double in 3rd and went 7 before being replaced by Bob Shaw who got the save. Shaw of course is guy who taught Perry the spitter.
Oh and the 10-8 game lasted 2:35.

  13. blade3colorado said, on December 8, 2022 at 11:49 am

Yankees aren’t done yet either. Dollars to donuts, fanbase will be pissed if that’s all they do. Consequently, they are our competitors for players. They will definitely be after Rodon and Nimmo. Second tier is the already mentioned Senga, possibly Robertson, and trading for Reynolds. We should do everything possible to trade for Reynolds in my opinion, e.g., switch hitter, good outfielder, and low salary ($6 million and change).

    • zumiee said, on December 8, 2022 at 2:19 pm

Yeah, a chance to do a kind of make-good on that original bad trade. Reynolds would be a nice add.

  14. zumiee said, on December 8, 2022 at 2:25 pm

No Columbo episode last night, but I did watch an episode of Perry Mason.
Perry Mason was a big factor in my development as a reader. When I was a kid, someone gave our family a bunch of the Perry Mason paperbacks by Earl Stanley Gardner. I read through them, and also watched the Perry Mason show which was being shown after school on syndicated reruns.
I could really sense my reading ability getting stronger. The books originally caught my interest because of their lurid covers, although the books themselves were never as lurid as the covers suggested.

SF’s pursuit of Judge was obviously well publicized, but haven’t heard much specifically about the team’s interest in the other FAs. Reports have said stuff like “Giants could pursue Nimmo, etc.”, but other than Judge, I haven’t heard of any other offers made to anyone. Did they even talk to Bell (Bell went so quietly and for such a small contract compared to these others) or Turner, or even Nimmo, who’s now also off the table? I’m guessing they will make an offer to Correa, but for a team that was supposedly all in on this FA class, not a lot of noise.

  18. mrsprtdude said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:21 pm

Just read an article re Judge visit. It was secrete meeting all set up. SF team had Judge going in back way to avoid publicity. Judge at last minute said he wanted to walk in the lobby. Pictures, social media. No more secrete. Did SF get played?
    Go get Rodon damn it!

  19. Flavor said, on December 8, 2022 at 6:43 pm

at this point I wouldn’t over pay for Correa. He’s not a difference maker like Judge and he wants 300 large. Maybe we zig back to heavy pitching and hope it nutralizes the big bats in the division.

    • unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2022 at 7:06 pm

      6/$300 mill for Rodon?

Seriously. These owners are gonna break the bank. A 40 year old guy gets $43 mill?

      Rodon is fucking 29.

  20. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2022 at 7:00 pm

I thought 6/120 mill was ridick for Nimmo. 8/164 is lunacy.

    Correa is gonna get 8/$300.

  21. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 8, 2022 at 7:14 pm

These contracts are indeed ridiculous. Always against over-paying (especially in terms of years). I’ve respected Z’s approach of no super long contracts, but obviously to keep up, they gotta pay to play, so not sure that’s going to work going forward, unless “the kids” really do start coming up and sticking. Hell, it’s not our money, and the team certainly has it, so I don’t care so much about over-paying anymore. But if not spending on FAs now but rather waiting for the minor leaguers is the plan, then the next year or two could still be spent in Mediocreville….

  22. djloo27 said, on December 8, 2022 at 7:47 pm

The Raiders just suck ass as usual.
Mayfield’s in town for like 40 hours, doesn’t know the players, doesn’t know the playbook, but yeah can take the Rams 98 yards for the winning drive, helped of course by the Raiders being total Dumbshits during that drive with penalties, holding during a pick, Tillery knocking the ball out of the refs hand wtf?? Glad they loss and eliminated I believe from playoffs..

  27. unca_chuck said, on December 8, 2022 at 10:30 pm

McDaniels is a loon. I’ve seen him throw deep on 3rd and 1 about 12 times this year. I think he made 1. He’d be better off running a fake punt than that.

The NFL in its wisdumb calls knocking the ball out of someone’s hand a 15 yard penalty. Yeah it was dumb but 3rd and 16 from the 20 is a bit worse that 1st and 10 from the 41. You change the fucking game over a ticky tacky call. Brilliant.

i like Dan but this is nonsense. Brady sucks now and he’s going to be like 87 years old next year. Pass. It’ll be Trey with Jimmy backing him up again unless Jimmy has played himself into a multi year deal somewhere else.

  29. willedav said, on December 9, 2022 at 7:17 am

2 lead stories on MLBTR: how much more over lux tax can Mets spend, and what about teams that missed out on top end of CF market, which would include SF and LA? Wonder if Giants could pry Mark Canha away from Mets to save them $13 mil, high OB guy who is versatile (LF and 1b option) but only played few games in CF, or if A’s would trade Laureano. Otherwise you’ve got the same old/same old platoon of Yaz and Slater alongside corners. hmmnn

    • Locojuan said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:15 am

I was wondering about AZ, who have a glut in CF. They also would like to dump the last 2 years of Bum’s contract ($22.9 and $12.9). Would Jake McCarthy or Daulton Varsho be worth taking Bum back and seeing if Bailey could work some magic with him?
I know Loo has mentioned Bum ending his career in SF and I’ve always wondered if he could be a stud in relief.

      • djloo27 said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:29 am

        I like it!

      • willedav said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:41 am

Sure, question would be what AZ wants in return for helping Giants. My guess would be top prospect or two, not something Giants have lot of or could afford to give up. My guess is guys you listed would be untouchable, and the available OF would be Thomas, the one who hasn’t hit much.

      • willedav said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:49 am

Varsho hit 27 HRs last year and McCarthy had .769 OPS. Doubt these guys go anywhere let alone to Division rival.
Thomas on other hand had slash line of .231/.275/.344 for .619 OPS with awful OB. Doesn’t sound like Z type of guy. 2 others, Luplow and Pavin Smith I don’t think are CFs and both had OPS in .600s.

      • Locojuan said, on December 9, 2022 at 10:05 am

Yeah Wille, not sure AZ would trade in the Division but maybe to dump Bum’s contract they would. The Snakes want to trade one of their lefties for some RH bats so maybe we could offer JD Davis and throw in Ramos plus with SF taking on Bum’s contract, they might think about it.

      • willedav said, on December 9, 2022 at 11:50 am

yeah Senor Locojuan, that could work and dumping off Bum saves them quite a bit. MLBTR also said they might be in on FA Longoria for part time duty at 3b. Dunno what’s up with Giants plans for Ramos, who is still on 40 man, right?

    • Locojuan said, on December 9, 2022 at 1:19 pm

I hadn’t heard about AZ kicking the tires on Longo, but it makes sense, Rojas isn’t going to give them a lot of pop at 3B and that’s why I threw in Davis.
Yep, Ramos is still on the 40 man as far as I know.

  30. unca_chuck said, on December 9, 2022 at 7:48 am

Jimmy might get a multi year deal but he’s proving to be pretty damn injury-prone. He may very well be the guy we cant miss because he won’t go away.

  31. unca_chuck said, on December 9, 2022 at 7:57 am

Brady? Riiiiiiiight. He looked absolutely horrible in Monday Night and most of the season. The only reason they won is due to the Saints ineptitude. Just like the Raiders last night.

    • Winder said, on December 9, 2022 at 9:47 am

I think if Brady goes anywhere it would be back to NE for another year to close his career out.
Anyway why would we want him when we got Purdy.

    • unca_chuck said, on December 9, 2022 at 2:45 pm

Brady would be the backup to Jones. I really don’t think Brady wants to sit.

  32. Winder said, on December 9, 2022 at 10:00 am

In a way I am kinda glad we didn’t go all out on a big contract. Makes me think our Minor league system is actually farther along than we might think. Youth is the way to go and if we still do go out and pay the big bucks then I hope it’s for pitching.

    • blade3colorado said, on December 9, 2022 at 10:46 am

You make sense, particularly your second sentence. For all the money San Diego has spent, what has it gotten them? Zilch. Also, the Giants have a better record versus them, including a West title, since Z came on board in 2019, shopping primarily in the Brebbia aisle. lqtm.

Still hoping for a big acquisition, but whatever happens, I am still in Z’s corner.

      • willedav said, on December 9, 2022 at 11:48 am

Well, for one, SD won two playoff series last year, beating Mets and Dogs, no small accomplishment. Which would be 2 more playoff series wins than Z has with Giants, despite winning Division title 2021.
SF went 6-13 vs. Pads last year, which was better than their 4-15 record vs. LA.

      • Flavor said, on December 9, 2022 at 11:51 am

If he’s doing it for tax purposes, you’d think he’d spread it around a bit. That guy John Gibbs is whacked, and yet he got something like 41% of people’s votes in a losing effort (thank goodness)… I guess as an individual citizen, he can give to whoever or whatever he wants, but he generally seems way out of step with SF as a team and a city.

Tax has nothing to do with it. Political contributions are not deductible, and even if, some of the amounts are subatomic compared to his wealth. He’s clearly in on the fascist, wackjob principles being espoused. To have this guy as the major shareholder of the Giants is a complete embarrassment to the franchise, IMO, especially in a city that considers itself a progressive bastion. His prior excuse of “I didn’t know” didn’t hold water then, and certainly not now after many iterations. At least Stoneham could blame his moves on being a drunk…

looked it up, 2011 he was 0-37 for LA.

My own baseball “career” ended with a strikeout in a softball league playing in the Presidio. I’d lived and breathed baseball since before I could even walk, excelled in Little League, was starting 2nd bagger for high school freshman and JV teams (gave that up once I hit junior year, too cool for school), and played a lot of great fast-pitch softball in Boston leagues over the years. Summer of ’02, I was 46, still playing in leagues in SF, but I had suddenly become that one old guy who always joins a team full of 20 somethings. First game with a new team, I actually struck out. In softball. Of course, it was 2 strikes, not 3, but still. I walked away and never went back. So tragically embarrassing I had to move to Asia……

    • Macdog said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:47 pm

      2 strikes?

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:50 pm

Yeah, John, there was one league that had 2 strikes and yer out and 3 balls for a walk, just to speed things up. Also played in one co-ed league where the men had to bat their opposite hand (I actually got pretty good hitting left-handed). Hated the 2 strikes thing, though…

      • djloo27 said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:51 pm

We used to play 2 swings with no ump…

    • Macdog said, on December 9, 2022 at 8:56 pm

No wonder I never played fast-pitch.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 9, 2022 at 9:14 pm

Ah, the 2 strike thing was a high arc slow pitch league. Not my favorite kind of baseball. I LOVED playing fast-pitch softball, it was like real baseball with bunting, stealing, and of course fast pitches…

      • Macdog said, on December 9, 2022 at 9:19 pm

Anyone that got to 2 strikes in slo-pitch should be banned.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 9, 2022 at 9:24 pm

Which is why I got exiled to Asia…. 🙂

      • James said, on December 9, 2022 at 9:39 pm

That high arc shit is *way* harder to hit than 70 mph from 45 feet.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 9, 2022 at 9:43 pm

Agree, that was the only time I’d ever struck out. There’s a method to it, kind of sitting back on your heels and swinging uppercut at it, but I took my fast-pitch swing to it and the results were predictable…

  41. Macdog said, on December 9, 2022 at 9:11 pm

In ’09, I saw the Giants at Philly, Timmy vs. Pedro Martinez. Velez hit a leadoff HR, but that was it for the offense and the Giants lost 2-1.

I can’t even imagine Farhan’s FA pitch. “Hey, come play for our whack job, insecure, politically charged manager, get shit on by seagulls and together we will finish in 4th place ahead of only the Rockies”. Where do I sign?

    • willedav said, on December 10, 2022 at 1:07 pm

Guy is loony tunes. Didn’t bother Gausman, who loved it here, nor Rodon who excelled without benefit of having Posey around and threw to Bart and Wynns. Surprised he has such an issue with Kapler, same guy whose team did pretty well a year ago. Hard for me to believe Giants won 107 in spite of manager.

    • willedav said, on December 10, 2022 at 1:12 pm

Nothing wrong with Haniger either, who at least isn’t getting stupid money. Unfortunate this offseason there aren’t as many decent OFs available as there are SS.

  43. snarkk said, on December 10, 2022 at 11:42 am

Maybe the Zman is in on these costly FAs, and none want to come to SF for whatever reason(s). Platooning and Kappler may not be great marketing attractions…

  44. mrsprtdude said, on December 10, 2022 at 1:27 pm

    I keep thinking about Nimmo.
The money is stupid of course, but more amazing is an EIGHT year deal for a guy who in the last 4 years has only played > 98 games once. He came up in 2016 for 32 games, so for the last starting in 17 he has played 6 seasons and is 29 years old now. Total all in of 63 homers. .270 ish hitter. Only 1/6 years ( this year) did he have 500AB’s. No star power, just an above average player. 8 years???

    • Flavor said, on December 10, 2022 at 2:08 pm

Nimmo has moderate power and no speed and he’s injury prone. 8 years for 160 or whatever it was might be the dumbest contract i’ve ever seen given to a baseball player in my life.

      • djloo27 said, on December 10, 2022 at 2:33 pm

        It’s definitely up there.
Mets owner seems to have more money than he knows what to do with and he’s pressured himself publicly into spending it.
        Lindor’s contract is also horrific…

    • Macdog said, on December 10, 2022 at 2:36 pm

And the Mets might be the 3rd-best team in the division this season.

  45. James said, on December 10, 2022 at 1:45 pm

The two OFers SF wanted got huge, extremely attractive deals from the 2022 playoff teams they’ve been with their entire careers. People usually don’t make big changes if they’re happy with their circumstances.

  46. willedav said, on December 10, 2022 at 2:23 pm

From what I understand the clubs are offering longer term FA deals to lower the AAV, which iirc is how lux taxes are calculated. Front end of years is what matters most I guess for production and success of club.

Hey Wille, did you see/hear about Rutgers getting screwed out of a win by the refs at Ohio St. the other night? And then the Big 10 admitted yesterday that the refs fucked up. Unbelievable.

Hey Mac, the Pacheco kid from Rutgers is really looking good lately in KC.
He’s nailed first round bust CEH to the bench…

      • Macdog said, on December 10, 2022 at 3:24 pm

Nice. For a football program that’s not very good, Rutgers churns out a surprisingly decent number of NFL players.

He just ignores 2021, team Z/H put together and Kapler ran. giants pitching gave up fewest bombs and walks in NL and had 2nd best ERA. Disco Gausman Webb, fine season from McGee and Rogers, plus Doval. Had to be superior coaching with that group to hold off Dogs.
Offense led league in HR top 3 BA OB slugging and OPS. Holdovers Longo Belt Posey Crawford, plus guys he picked up like Flores Yaz Ruf Wade Jr. and deadline trade he made for Bryant.
You can’t tell me these guys didn’t want to play for Kap.

The Kings arrive in NYC to play the Knicks. It’s the kind of game the Kings need to win on their schedule in order to make the playoffs. Playoffs?! Cue up the Jim Mora clip.
The Warriors play the Celtics tonight on a national broadcast game on ABC.

The way the NBA game is played now, a lot of point guards are the leading scorers on their teams. For younger fans, it’s probably just fine with them. But all the teams play basically the same style, and it’s not great when there’s so much sameness to the game. An older geezer like me misses the older times when teams had more individualism to their style of play.

  50. zumiee said, on December 10, 2022 at 3:18 pm

All the NBA teams are going to retire the #6 in honor of Bill Russell. That’s a great move by the league.
Ironically, what would Russell’s role be if he was born much later and was a player in today’s NBA? It would be a much reduced role, I think.

    • djloo27 said, on December 10, 2022 at 4:08 pm

Team just lost their playoff round game 66-63 yes that score is right! Better recruit some Defense as well..

  52. Macdog said, on December 10, 2022 at 3:37 pm

I saw that score and figured it was multiple OTs — but no! That all was in 4 quarters. Sac had 49 1st downs, the teams combined for over 1,300 yards, what a wild one.

“Tax has nothing to do with it. Political contributions are not deductible, and even if, some of the amounts are subatomic compared to his wealth.”

I think the point being made was that politicians like that are far more likely to vote for huge tax cuts for billionaires, which proved true during the Trump administration, much to the benefit of people like Johnson. To Johnson, that has been campaign money very well spent over the years.

“He’s clearly in on the fascist, wackjob principles being espoused.”

That can be true, also. Or he just doesn’t care, as long as he’s getting huge tax breaks. To me, that’s just as despicable. He probably has grandkids and great grandkids; doesn’t he care about what kind of future they’ll be living in?

  54. zumiee said, on December 10, 2022 at 5:53 pm

But, hey, it’s a no-apology type of world these days. Reese’s Cups’ ad says “Not sorry.” Meaning: “We know our product is addictive junkfood, but we’re not going to apologize for that.”
Uh, OK….interesting campaign strategy. And probably an effective strategy. Consumers are probably all “I like a company that just tells it like it is.”

It’s kind of interesting that the giant baseball contract has made a comeback. Brian Kenny, from the MLB Network, devoted an entire chapter of his book to why those giant contracts have been a mistake for teams for the vast majority of the history of giant contracts.
What does it say about this off-season? A bit of a backlash against analytics? Teams tried going heavy in analytics for a number of years, and it hasn’t produced the results desired? Or maybe it doesn’t mean anything, and it’s just a freak off-season.

    • zumiee said, on December 10, 2022 at 6:12 pm

Or that the sport is more awash in money than we’ve realized? We talk a lot about the problems of the sport, but maybe it’s raking in a lot more cash than we realize.

During ad breaks in the Dubs game, I found two keepers in tonight’s tv schedule. SNL looks good. And, 1/2 hour before that, a rerun station is showing the Columbo episode featuring Gretchen Corbett. Old timers will remember her as Jim Rockford’s feisty, lovely young lawyer. Her turn, answering the door nearly nude and then walking around the house casually answering the befuddled detective’s dogged questions, is rightly considered one of the best scenes in the Columbo canon. Hope it plays out in the first 1/2 hour.

Re finishing 2nd? Maybe the Giants have to start overpaying in the way the Rockies Pirates Marlins might to lure an elite FA. We finish 2nd a lot. Maybe Farhan has a weird vibe the players don’t like?

  62. mrsprtdude said, on December 10, 2022 at 10:19 pm

“Maybe Farhan has a weird vibe the players don’t like?” Interesting question, Dude. Is Z the team’s chief negotiator with FAs and their agents? Seem to remember in the Sabean years that Sabes did some of it, Bobby Evans did some, depended on the FA and agent. I’d ask the Flap if the Giants’ GM is involved, but I don’t even remember his name and haven’t heard one thing about him or from him since he *joined* the team. He’s the 2nd GM under Z that I wouldn’t even know him if I bumped into him. Maybe ya’ll have heard more from him than I’ve seen, but I find it extremely weird, the GM thing, under Z…. Either something isn’t working with these negotiations, or else Z isn’t all that focused on it and is indeed just gonna wait for his draftees to appear by the Bay in the next year or two. Or maybe it is the whole Morocco Mole thing…….. (side: great to see Morocco doing well in the World Cup).

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on December 11, 2022 at 2:49 am

Actually in above comment, I meant Ned Colletti, not Bobby Evans. I don’t remember Booby Evans doing much…
