A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Conforto. 2 years. Boring. He has an opt out after 1 year so either he’s good and he bails or he sucks and he stays. That’s a Farhan specialty that I think he should probably fucking stop doing.

they are afraid of an ankle injury from 14 years ago but they’re fine shipping 36 million to a guy who tore up his shoulder LAST YEAR

That is what Zaidi stands for…was really only move left for him on the market. If he hits 25 homers may lead the team. The OF defense will be much much better. What CF is out there for a potential trade?

Interesting news about Trevor Bauer reinstatement. Flodgers have to release him no? Where does he end up. I can see him fitting right in with the Phillies and their hooligan fans…

Quite a grudge Boras held against the Giants.
In my mind this just proves what I said originally about the Correa thing.
    Everyone was in on it…

    • Locojuan said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:20 am

He’s an agent, why would he stop shopping players to a desperate team?
From what I read, after Boras gave the Giants extra time to sign, he told them he would have to start talking to other teams which they apparently said “Fine”. During the next 12 hours of contacting other teams, he didn’t hear a peep from SF.
This was from Boras, which is the only side of the story we’ve heard anything.

      Good moves, both.
Time to stop the “pending physical” jokes but I guess Giants are in for them for awhile.

      • Macdog said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:05 am

Rosenthal was saying ‘pending physical’ re player/team agreements before the Correa fiasco, so this was likely an unintended joke.

    • Locojuan said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:25 am

Signing those two still leaves about $30 mil under the tax threshold, so SF could have afforded all 3.

      • James said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:35 am

That’s what I hoped would happen. That would have been a serious contender. As it is, this is now at best a last WC, if they get lucky team.

    • Giant Head said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:15 am

      2026, ‘27, ‘28, ‘29 – 2013 Carlos Correa = $26.25/year

      Conforto + Rogers 2026-2013 = $0.

      About $260 mill in savings.

      • Locojuan said, on December 23, 2022 at 11:37 am

Woo fucking hoo. I’ll be sure to celebrate those $s that the shareholders can put in their pockets.
Do you think that will make the price of tickets cheaper? Well, it won’t.

      • Giant Head said, on December 23, 2022 at 12:46 pm

They’ll obviously now have tons of flexibility going forward and think this is kind of a make or break year for Farhan. The system has to prove not only competitive but by end of next year we have to have some hard decisions on whether the Lucianos Matos’ and Harrisons are locks or not as prospects and some sense of they are viable for 2024. But Farhan also has to show an ability to land a big name bat.

  5. Macdog said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:12 am

Now we got both Rogers twins to hate on. 🙂

you guys who like these moves, come on, wake up. This is just more filler bullshit from Farhan.

    • willedav said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:53 am

Liked Conforto couple years ago, and he’s certainly worth a shot. Rogers is good get for pen and SF has improved pitching as much as possible without Rodon. Solid incremental moves and as mentioned above, they still have $$ to spend if they see someone they like.

  8. James said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:27 am

    Slater/Conforto, Yaz/Slater, Haniger/Yaz, Wade/Haniger, Wade/Slater, Flores/Wade, Pederson/Davis, etc

    I love it!

the good news is that you’ll be able to sit pretty much wherever you choose at these home games.

      • James said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:37 am

As long as it doesn’t get Candlestick intimate on those weeknight games, I’m good with that.

  9. James said, on December 23, 2022 at 8:52 am

Say the Giants had stuck with Correa, and signed Conforto and Rogers. Everyone would have been at least ok with that, right? The high number of in game moves would have been pretty much the same. The only difference is that Crawford is there instead of Correa.

    • willedav said, on December 23, 2022 at 9:03 am

And other spots opened up for Estrada (who maybe improves defensively) and for Villar/Davis at 3b, both of whom could add some pop to lineup. Given more consistent reps one of them could help IF defense too.

  10. Flavor said, on December 23, 2022 at 9:29 am

This is an 80 win team, if that

    • James said, on December 23, 2022 at 9:40 am

.500 is likely, but 88 wins isn’t out of the question if the ankles and other body parts are sound.

    • willedav said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:10 am

I was fully prepared for this anyway and can live without big expensive long term FA get. Top prospects will come under much scrutiny and could be up soon.
And as for W expectations, who had Padres and Phils in NLCS, or Phils in WS?
Mets and Dogs were both 100 W teams, right? And wtf happened–unceremoniously bounced out of playoffs in first series.

  11. James said, on December 23, 2022 at 9:36 am

The off-season basically comes down to Correa and Rodon vs Crawford and Stripling. Sure, Crawford would have platooned some with Estrada and Villar, but essentially the difference between global happiness and end of the world despair is captured in the above formulation.

  12. James said, on December 23, 2022 at 9:59 am

I think I’m going to have a custom Slater/Yaz jersey made for me, a Flores/Wade for the Mrs.. The other 9,998 attendees will be envious.

    • Flavor said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:09 am

that would be hilarious actually. Get on tv so Farhan can see how he’s destroyed our once great franchise with failure and players no one cares about.

  13. Giant Head said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:11 am

  14. Flavor said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:15 am

Hey, I’d love it if we could build a championship team without having to pay big $ to free agents but those days are gone and our prospects suck which is why he went out and spent on Correa. We’ll see, I guess, if any of them ever amount to anything. So far Villar is our best bet. LOL VILLAR!!!!

  15. Giant Head said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:18 am

I agree this is not more than an 80 win team. With Correa would have been an 81 win team.

    • James said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:25 am

The overall roster does seem stronger than last year’s. The pitching should be better, despite the loss of Rodon. They have players with some pop at all positions. They’ll need some of that 2021 good fortune to contend for a WC spot.

  16. Flavor said, on December 23, 2022 at 10:50 am

Flav: Events around Judge and Correa were a bit like some space oddity. Surreal. So here’s my wrap, to date

Giants sputtered on getting an A-class Superstar. Just wasn’t in the cards, I guess. So is the team in any measure improved? Gotta say “yes”. No “A” guys for the headlines and the casual fans…but a whole lot of “B” players on the 25-man. Some “C” grade, but not as many as the “B”’s. Can anyone point to a surefire “D”…? D, could stand for Development. The pointer swings to Joey Bart. Will he catch on and achieve a “C” note on this sliding scale? He’s the single question mark on the roster. Otherwise, the “D”s can be found under the label of “Disposed”. Baseball, after all is a business. Even a couple of “C” graders got the boot. The only “F” that I can detect was the flap over Judge and the flop with Correa.

My prediction…as of the current roster they should go 87-75 or close to that mark. So where are the improvements? A pair of RH power-bats in the outfield corners. Yaz and Slater as basically capable of alternately handling center for the upcoming season. As I noted in a previous posting, one or more of three outstanding speed plus power guys from the pipeline should hit The Show in 24. The trio, particularly if all three make the ’24 roster at various points of the season would constitute the finest class of outfielders as Giants prospects in the better part of half a century. This year, my rating of the O.F. would hover between B- to a flat B…not bad for a single season prospectus.

Pitching: Just a single Ace in our Spiderman, Webb. There may be just one handful of starters who could best him for two wins out of three in faceups. What follows is a mob of number “B”’s. Some team with a pairing of aces, would usually outmatch whoever gets the nod as our second starter…but that is not a given, as the whole array of BB gunners are capable of tossing excellent performances, they just are not consistent enough to rate as aces…roll that around in your skull for a spell. Three, Four and Five in the rotation would be better than those in the majority of opponents. In the NL there are maybe four teams who could match or better us in mid and bottom rotation slots. Then, SF will have the luxury of a sixth rotation piece and even a long-man in Junis.

Bullpen: Can you pretend to begin to imagine the sheer joy, along with fraternal competitiveness which is right now erupting between the Taylor and Tyler tripwires, one a righty and the other a lefty. One with a more traditional arsenal and the other…well we have all cheered and cussed at that submariner. Tripwires as set-up guys for the blossoming closer, just now about to have all his ducks in a row. Doval’s work should solidify as it becomes more and more likely that the number of times he needs to pitch more than a single frame are now significantly reduced. Camilo’s sophomore season was mostly excellent, with occasional lapses. He’s a veteran now. Rest of the relievers have been sorted out. No probable sure discards remain. Dumpster diving has turned up a gem or two, Alexander, for example, but now may be mostly a transition into a finer future as there now are no fewer than two or three pipeline guys who have either seen The Show or appear to be on the verge.

Depth: More games are won by pitching and defense than by a slew of sluggers. Year, Giants are not headliners this coming season, but they are transforming into a solid team for ’23 and likely to have a winning season once again. The eye is to the future. Both Harrison and Black are on the verge. Quality arms. Rotation slots…if any are available. That suggests possible trades before the deadline. A “B” class pitcher for a solid catcher like Toronto’s Danny Jansen. Check out his stats. By the deadline, SF may be looking at the sweet prospect of no fewer than 8 solid rotation pieces (best case scenario, of course). Neither the pipeline, nor the roster happen to sport a high-end first baseman. Our utility pieces will do for starters. But if SF lands a Danny Jansen for one of a rotation surplus, how about reducing the Rotation pieces clear down to six, with another of the BB’s plus Joey Bart and Heliot Ramos for either a good, established first-sacker…or perhaps a can’t miss prospect in the hands of an outfit which already sports an excellent man at that position. Villar should be more than sufficient at Third, but there’s a kid named Casey rising rapidly through the pipeline and his glove is world-class at that position and his bat does not lag. More possibilities.

Perhaps a slick fielding, but possibly not too much on the wood, utility infielder who is a better than average shortstop. Crawford may require frequent spelling. With several solid, even if not spectacular bats in the array, the Giants could live a season with improved infield defense. After all, that old reminder of solid pitching and defense more often than not adds up to a W.

      • xoot said, on December 23, 2022 at 11:11 am

Great overview, but B flat always puts me in mind of the blues. Bb 9 has to go, but will he? Bbart can’t play 1b. I’ve never liked Manea. WeBb’s alone at the top of the rotation. Hope he holds up. Of course, maybe some good things will happen between now and April. 82 wins as it is.

“so Farhan can see how he’s destroyed our once great franchise with failure and players no one cares about.”

The Giants have won more games than they’ve lost in the four baseball seasons he’s been running things in SF, and made the playoffs one of those seasons. The franchise was in a pretty dire situation when he took over. I don’t see how he can be seen to have “destroyed our once great franchise with failure.” The “players no one cares about” part, I would say there’s mixed opinion on that. That’s up to individual fans.
I could be totally wrong, but I still think part of the attendance problem is lingering skittishness about Covid, amongst a Bay Area fanbase which is going to be more concerned about this issue than some red-state team’s fanbase. I haven’t been to a game since the pandemic. I’m not comfortable with it yet, and it could still be a while.

    • zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 2:15 pm

The thing about going to a game, is it’s not just sitting in the ballpark around strangers; for a lot of the fans, going to a game would mean riding BART and/or a muni train. A lot of folks are not ready to be packed like a sardine next to a bunch of strangers.

      • Macdog said, on December 23, 2022 at 2:52 pm

Has this been an issue for the Warriors and Niners?

      • zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 3:02 pm

Seems like that would be hard to judge, IMO, because of the different lengths of seasons. The Warriors with only 41 home games in an arena, and the Niners with 8 or 9 home games in a football stadium. But it’s a fair question.

      • zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 3:06 pm

I’m guessing for Niner games there’s more parking for people to drive their cars there, so public transit can be avoided. Flappers that have been there can say more about that. I haven’t been to the new Niner stadium yet.

      • Macdog said, on December 23, 2022 at 3:17 pm

Yeah, hard for me to tell from afar, except for A’s games, haha.

      • djloo27 said, on December 23, 2022 at 3:33 pm

MSG is always packed for Knicks and Rangers.
        Very few masks around.
The subways are definitely less crowded, but I think that’s only because of so many people working from home.
Masks are optional – maybe 20% of riders wear them.

    • James said, on December 23, 2022 at 2:40 pm

The whole we need a marquee player mantra seemed to gain a lot of voices after that Baggarsly article. Even the analytics uber alles Brisbee is now chanting it at an embarrassing volume, just to show he’s in touch with the common fan, even though you know he’s secretly delighted to see if the truth about Farhan’s methods lies somewhere in between 81 and 107 wins. The impact of COVID on attendance has waned, I think, but it suppressed enthusiasm for the 107-win team. When they disappointed last year, the further decline was as much a result of SF’s still empty downtown as anything else.

      • zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 2:52 pm

I haven’t even been in the Bay Area since the start of the pandemic, I have to admit. I get the mailers for the Freight and Salvage and see all the great concerts I’m missing, which is a bummer.
I did go to an author’s book event at a local venue in the Central Valley, with about 100 people there. But I was figuring the crowd that would go to a book event was probably going to have a high percentage of vaccinated people.
I was at a grocery store this morning, and I was one of the very few wearing a mask.

      • James said, on December 23, 2022 at 3:12 pm

They are still requiring masks and proof of vaccination at the Freight. We saw Carsie Blanton there a few weeks ago with the usual crowd of well behaved, superannuated hippies and a scattering of younger faces. I’ve got to assume they’re carrying on because people have not been getting sick at these events.

      • zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 3:19 pm

Good to know, James, thanks for the info about the venue.

a little bit more from Stix
    ————————————————————————————————————————————–

    Craig:

Temp is currently climbing to maybe just a few degrees below zero. NNW wind is kicking up some of the latest snowfall. Kinduva bleary sun. Windshield factor with that perhaps 20 MPH wind means that there are currently no pedestrians walking the streets of downtown Gonvick (population right around 300)…as that “windshield factor” as I like to puckishly call it is likely in the range of thirty below. Just finished a brunch of salmon patties, also made with potato flakes, cornmeal, wheat germ, non-alum based baking powder, some onion and garlic powders, a tiddle of cumin, some chopped up manzanilla olives and one single, solitary egg whipped into the melange. Fried it up in peanut oil as my hunger obviated the alternative of a preferable slow bake as salmon-loaf. Topped it with some raunch dressing and sipped a mug of high-test, sieve-brewed coffee.

Glancing out the picture window I spot my snowbound, 99 Mercury Sable, temporarily disabled since Monday night when one of the daughters of her 89 Y.O. mother next apt over, who was apprehensive about backing her Buick outta the frontside parking-lot, called up the landlady, demanding that it be plowed out once again. So I got orders to move the car looonnnng before next Tuesday when the temps should reach 20’s+ and parking it out on the street, so the stepson of the landlady could plow out the lot. I was extremely apprehensive, because I knew it would be getting something like 20 below by the next morning. So on Tuesday afternoon, I shoveled away the snow that was blocking the driver’s side of the car. It had been dumped there by the newish snowplow driver whom the woman across the hall calls an “asshole”. So key in ignition, I hit it. Almost caught. Tried another couple times and response gradually weakened well below almost.

So at a distance about from home plate to second base, I gaze out at that $700 machine with a somewhat overaged battery within and maybe 4” of snow on the roof and windows completely covered. So on Tuesday, or maybe even Monday, its some sweeping and shoveling and than another attempt to get it started. If that doesn’t pay out, I’ll need to get out the jumper cables and find someone nearby who wouldn’t mind giving a jump-start…an extremely rare phenomenon anywhere on the left coast and likely even in all but the highest mountains in “Virginia. They don’t call THIS place, Manysnowta for nothing, where the closest city of any size happens to be Winnipeg, Manitoba, which has been rated as the coldest largish city on the planet.

Health and all is fine, except for that now being confined to quarters, I may have added a couple pounds to the gut, not having been able to get my accustomed work/exercise out at the homestead. Thus I’m running a bit low on non-fluoidated water. Oh well, I may live even if I need to get my drinkables from the tap. Stannous Fluoride, being a byproduct of the aluminum industry does not do a damn thing for the teeth of adults. So why don’t they quit messing with the water supply and simply recommend that some fluoride be added to sugar-coated Yum-Yum breakfast cereal? Let people choose, is my motto.

Hoping all systems are go for you, your daughter (Merry Christmas BTW) and your dad up in Oregon…and of course all the Flappers. Utterly most grateful for your keeping the Flap alive. Not much going on and everyone’s delighted with a thread from several days ago. Hot news, like lately and you can (but don’t have to,) as everyone gets it if you simply don’t have time, energy, inclination to run out yet another one. From Xoot’s response to my inclusion (thanks for the speedy inclusion, BTW) , there was need to respond (and add) to his take at 82 wins vs. my 87. Way I see it, is that SF did not hit it’s fan-pleasing goals, but did manage to tighten up some loose ends. So it’s not exactly a rebuilding year, rather more of a realignment, prior to big offseason moves next trading season followed by additions from the pipeline and possibly a free-agent or two. Surmise is that in ’24, with generous pipeline production, Los Gigantes might just be fully competitive with the Downstate Monsters. So the New Year should be moderately happy but holding off delightful for yet another year. In a word: Patience.

Loo, you were on fire yesterday . . . Here’s one of your gems:

“Judge was the goal and they gave it a great effort.
No use for this half ass consolation prize for the same money.
      Can this motherfucker even run?
6 SB in the last 6 years and none since 2019 when he swiped ONE.
How about all of 9 career triples in almost 4,000 career PA?
Fuck him, fuck Boras, and fuck Cohen.
      We done good…”

Mea Culpa . . . I was all in on Correa, but I was WRONG and am glad that the Giants had the balls to say, wait a minute . . . If not for Cohen’s obsession for Correa, Boras had no “trapeze net” but the Minnesota offer, which was significantly less versus our offer. By the by, San Dawg is totally down with what happened. I chatted with him a bit yesterday on Twitter and he said: “I’m with you Blade! And I don’t need any further explanation from the Giants. Let’s move on.” This was in response to my Tweet:

“You’re one of only a few @SanDawg42 that hasn’t gone delusional about this, i.e., this was ownership’s (Greg Johnson) call, not Z . . . This is already in my rear view mirror.”

I suspect the Giants are going to suffer in attendance next season, but this will turn out okay in the long run. In any event, you’re spot on Loo and I hope Stix is too regarding their record next season.

The 10th was our annual extended family (maybe 75-80 relatives) Christmas party in San Francisco. Michele and I planned on going, but we turned around when we reached Folsom due to gusting winds (35-45 MPH) and slashing rain. I could barely keep my large truck in my lane on Highway 50. It was a good decision, not only because of the weather, but also because a half dozen or so family members got infected by COVID at this event (we suspect), including my uncle, who is 95 years young.

Zero anti-vaxxers in our family and I would imagine that 90% of them were up to date on their booster shots. I still have not been infected by COVID . . . Just a matter of time I suspect, regardless of whether I continue to keep up to date on my COVID booster vaccines.

mm yeah agree with SD, time to move on. Before dooming up the season here in December 3 months before any meaningful games are played, hope everyone’s BP can chill (though not as literally as Stix) and enjoy Holiday weekend and New Years.
Plenty of sports on. Watched #2 ranked Stanford women blast Cal today, man are they good.

I was definitely shocked and disappointed when I woke up to the news. And my best guess was that ownership scotched the deal in a bout of due diligence overindulgence when they had no latitude. But I never questioned The Almighty Farhan, and now that it’s looking like Z had the balls to act on his own principles, I am excited to see what happens. 2021 best case scenario, 2022 worst case, 23 the proof that data is all that matters? I sure hope so.

Pawlie sent me this at 5:20am (prior to us exchanging Wordle results) . . . “Correa to the Mets not the Giants?!?!?!?! I’m sorry but Steve Cohen has now out-Steinbrennered George Steinbrenner. It’s going to be pretty easy for me to root against Correa and the NY Mercs, short for Mercenaries. Sigh.
        Good morning.”

The Kings take on the Wiz at home tonight in the type of game the Kings have to win if they want to make the playoffs. The Kings stumbled the other night and lost to the Hornets (ouch), but generally have won the games on their schedule they need to win.

  23. zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 5:53 pm

It’s amazing what being in playoff contention does to fans. I’m excited about a Kings/Wiz game!! It is must-see TV!!

I recently finished the nonfiction audiobook Devotion, set during the Korean War. Excellent book. I realize I didn’t know much about the Korean War, other than what I learned from episodes of MASH. There is a movie version of Devotion that was in theaters recently and may have already moved on. I would like to see that movie eventually.
My current audiobook is South of Broad, by Pat Conroy. An intense southern novel with lots of harsh dialog. Not my usual reading material, but pretty interesting.

You’ve gotta see “Pork Chop Hill”

      • zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 6:11 pm

I haven’t seen that yet. I did see Hacksaw Ridge, set during WWII. If anyone hasn’t seen Hacksaw Ridge yet, it’s one of the best war movies yet made.

      • James said, on December 23, 2022 at 6:24 pm

When Platoon came out, my roommate and I decided to watch pretty much every older war movie we could. We were determined to find that the hype around Platoon was bullshit. We were right, of course.

  25. zumiee said, on December 23, 2022 at 6:18 pm

In paper books, I’ve been reading Ian W. Toll’s great nonfiction trilogy about the war in the Pacific during WWII.
In the second book, he talks about the Bay Area during WWII, when it was a major launching place for ships in WWII. Imagine all manner of war ships docked in the Bay Area, and coming and going under the Golden Gate Bridge. He gives a vivid description of soldiers, sailors, and marines on leave in the city, the drinking and brawling between the branches of service over the smallest trivialities. San Francisco has that aspect throughout its history. It became a big city during the brawling, bawdy days and nights of the gold rush, and that set a tone, more or less.

Our future. From Brisbee of the Athletic..
To make the postseason, the Giants will have to be either the best team in the NL West (lol), or they’ll have to be better than at least one of the following teams:

    • Dodgers
    • Braves
    • Mets
    • Phillies
    • Padres
Back to me…YIKES! These teams are going to be very good for YEARS because they now all have owners who spend a lot of money. Some of our prospects are going to have to pan out to all star types or the 2020’s are be a long decade.

    • Flavor said, on December 24, 2022 at 7:56 am

well said. I don’t see the Giants being competitive again for many years.

    • willedav said, on December 24, 2022 at 8:43 am

Brisbee lol. About only thing I dislike about Athletic is that despite giving almost every column he’s written the lowest possible rating (meh), he’s still there. Insanity on my part, but I can hope. Baggs is just light years ahead and so is Melissa Lockard who tracks prospects.
He was really in on Judge who was never coming here despite $360 mil Giants offer.
      Time to get over it.

James, 2022 is very far from ‘worst case scenario’. This team could easily be a 90 loss team.

    • James said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:35 am

I always assume a range of wins and losses. If they’d gone 76- 86 last year with roughly the same number of runs scored and runs allowed, it wouldn’t have made them any worse a team. On paper, this is a better team than last year’s. The idea that Correa is the difference between 90 wins and 90 losses is absurd.

  30. Winder said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:20 am

So, even if they are right, they are wrong?

      This’ll be forgotten soon enough.

We’d even be looked at as the smart ones if Correa breaks down.

      • Flavor said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:43 am

you think the Giants handled this ok?

  32. Winder said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:26 am

I don’t have a clue as to how many games we win but I think all we really need is a player to provide a spark and see where that leads. I know at this level baseball is a business but it should also be fun. We have seen lots of big contract fall flat and affect a teams play.

  33. willedav said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:33 am

In reading story by Twins beat writer he said there was an incident late season when Correa slid into 2b i think and stayed down for long time. iirc he said he thought the plate might have shifted or come loose, but it wound up being OK and came off field.
btw, Twins and their $280 mil deal they declined to increase when Boras called them (before Mets $315 offer that was finalized), come in for same grief Giants fans have given out–always second best, not serious yada yada. Again maybe this was Correa saying Twins needed to bank $400 mil for him to come back.

  34. unca_chuck said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:38 am

I mean, really. Webb and a bunch of iffy pitchers. A platoon gang, a shakey pen, and a possible solid catcher.

The prospects are still a year away.

It isn’t so much we are horrible, it’s that other teams are markedly better. At least the ones we would be battling for a playoff spot.

    • Flavor said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:40 am

exactly correct. And not a single player worth getting excited to see hit. Not one.

    • Flavor said, on December 24, 2022 at 9:44 am

it wasn’t the physical. It was from an injury he sustained 14 years ago. FOURTEEN!

From column in Athletic by Dan Hayes, Twins beat writer: Story was Sept 20 game Correa was trying to steal 2b, got thrown out and spent long time on field before walking off and finishing game.
this is Correa quote: “He just hit my plate. I had surgery and he hit it. Just kind of felt numb. Vibrating. So I was just waiting for it to calm down. It was a little scary, but when I moved I knew I was good.”
from Hayes: “Team sources said the club hadn’t had an opportunity to thoroughly examine him since his original physical in March.” And that they told Boras when he called they wanted to look into what Giants had found.
He did play 12 of last 13 games and hit .319 over that stretch.

“Get on tv so Farhan can see how he’s destroyed our once great franchise with failure and players no one cares about”

In a world of Larry Kruegers, the man without a radio show or podcast always sounds the most insightful.

“ well said. I don’t see the Giants being competitive again for many years.”

They won 107 games last year.

“ you think the Giants handled this ok?”

Yes and no. That contract could easily have ruined the franchise. Without speed or power, and no box office appeal, what are they going to do with him when he can’t play SS? Just look at the impact La Stella’s three year, $18 million dollar deal has had. He’s a WAR Baby for his defense.
OTOH calling for that press conference was an appalling blunder.

“ what hitter on this team do you get excited to see hit? Like, legit excitement, can’t miss their at bat?”

There weren’t any hitters to get excited about in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2021 when they were 2nd in MLB for runs scored. Since Bonds “retired”, exciting ABs have been about the circumstances, not the player..

  43. zumiee said, on December 24, 2022 at 2:04 pm

“calling for that press conference was an appalling blunder.”

Yeah, scheduling the press conference before reviewing the medical results was a mistake. It gave Boras a big artificial time limit to put on the Giants. The Giants shouldn’t have assumed the medical results were just a formality.
We know that medical people have a professional obligation to tell it like it is, to the best of their knowledge.

    • James said, on December 24, 2022 at 8:56 pm

How might this have played out differently in the Giants’ favor, if they hadn’t announced the press conference?

  44. zumiee said, on December 24, 2022 at 2:09 pm

Last night, the Kings had their most disappointing loss of the season so far. The got completely outplayed by the Wiz in every aspect of the sport. The Kings got a reality check. They looked like a team that is thinking they’re real good, and all they had to do was just show up vs. the Wiz and automatically get the win. Sports don’t work like that. You have to actually play the game. The Wiz were aggressive and hungry, and the Kings looked like a team that was looking forward to a couple days off for Christmas.

Because Mason got hurt on the opening kickoff.

Yeah, Washington’s defense is no joke. They were tough. But our defense was tougher. Fucking Wentz came in and I thought he was gonna get Wash back in the game. He hasn’t lost to us.

And fucking Minn gets another close win with a 61 yard game winning FG.

  48. unca_chuck said, on December 24, 2022 at 7:13 pm

Better pitching? From who? We replaced Rodon with Sean Manaea. Stripling? We got one pen guy. And we are still pretty much a platoon team.

Let’s be real here. The guys we signed are pretty much the Brebbia aisle. Our big signings are coming off big injuries. I mean they may hang around the race for the last playoff spot if everything goes right. But to see another Cinderella season like 2021 seems pretty far-fetched.
