A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Merry Christmas

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 25, 2022

All I wanted for Christmas were new players. Honestly, that’s where most of my frustration stems from with the Giants. I’m tired of platoon guys. I’m tired of none of our hitters doing anything particularly well other than keeping that OPS/OBP up. Estrada, Wilmet, Crawford, Yaz, etc….just don’t do it for me anymore. I want a home run chase. Or a guy who leads the league in stolen bags. Baseball, and specifically my team, has gotten kinda boring for me.

Having said all that and now that the dust has settled I am fine with us not getting Correa. Or Judge. Or Rondon. But you know what? All 3 of those guys would have held my interest in the team this year. Even one of them. We got Stripling and Haniger and….twins. Lame.

Anyway, Merry Christmas Flappers. I have appreciated you guys and this place for many many years. But it is time to take a break. I have backed off my plan to dump the blog–at least for now. I think what I need to do is to take a step back, not worry about the team or writing threads or anything else for a while. This place used to be therapy for me but not anymore. Maybe in a few months I’ll find a different reason to fire it back up again. Spring time really is an exciting time and a re-birth or a re-boot of this wonderful place might be just what the doctor ordered.

But for now, let’s shut this old girl down for a bit.

If you guys need to get in touch hit me at bigflavor77@gmail.com or on twitter @1flapdown77

‘Twas the night before Christmas when all through the blog
Not a Flapper was stirring, not even SanDawg.

The best Z could do was Tyler’s twin and Conforto
In the wake of the Carlos Correa fiasco.

The Flappers were anxious in startles and fits
In hopes that Big Flavor won’t soon call it quits.

And I in St. Louis still awake for no reason
Was resigned to a second straight .500 season.

    Merry Christmas to all
And to all a good night.

Merry Christmas Flav and Flappers all over the world . . . Waiting for my little one to wake up. We put out cookies, with milk for Santa and carrots (for the reindeer) last night before going to bed. Fast forward to 1am (or was it 2am???), I woke up on one of my pee breaks and unbeknownst to my daughter, ate the goodies. lol

Happy New year guys . . . out.

man, i remember those days well. I still have all Katie’s letters to Santa, the last couple begging for him to show her a sign that he’s real. She’s 20 now. Miss those days.

It’s a magical time! Watching Michele – I haven’t “felt Christmas” like this since I was 7 or 8 years old. Hope you are with Katie today Flav.

yep, she’s asleep. Christmas kinda anti climactic this year. She just got 1 big present— a week in sun valley skiing. That shit’s expensive. She leaves 1/1

Ah cool, thanks for everything Flav.
when I was still playing softball 2-30 years ago, always looked forward to first workout and seeing everyone again, having buddy we called the Glove Doctor restring it and condition it for me and cracking on each other etc.
Hope we can all get back together for next season. Be well!

A rebirth is a great spiritual step…I’ve been under the radar last 48 hours and did not see this till now. I thought the concern with Correa’s physical was legit.

    Merry Xmas, everyone.

Brunch with the son this morning, a quick hello to the COVID-ridden daughter yesterday. Best gift I got was her announcement that she’ll be starting a new job at the California Air Resources Board in the new year. After a couple years teaching and being paid like a babysitter in the CSU system, she’s finally going to earn an adult salary.

Merry Christmas to all Flappers everywhere and for you east coasters bundle up and stay safe with some wicked snow storms!
So all the crazy fiasco involving Carlos Correa it’s looking better that the Giants and their Crack medical staff didn’t like his x-rays on his right leg/ankle which has a surgical plate still in there since 2014..
Now the Mets are second guessing themselves lol on their hasty decision to sign him!Merry Correamas as Borass put it..
Boras still able to work his magic though thru the holidays signing his players to over 800 million during the wild spending spree. Love him or hate him he is still “The Top Dog Agent” that gets the job done..

Frohe Weihnachten from Nurnberg, Germany ! Mrs snarkk and I came to Europe to join the Snarkettes for a trip in France, Germany and to Prague to see the Christmas markets and other sights in the holiday period. I’ve seen one SF cap so far, in between the grilled bratwursts and the GluhWein. Nurnberg has a great Xmas market and a “bratwurst museum”. How great is that?…

Merry X-mas Flappers. Thanks for reporting the great poem from mac! Well done. Thanks again to Craig for all you have done for us Flappers over the last 14 years!

  13. sfsarge said, on December 25, 2022 at 1:39 pm

I don’t celebrate Christmas, so I volunteered to work today so those that do can spend the day with their families. (The time and a half plus the paid holiday certainly doesn’t hurt either.) Well, if this is it, it’s been a hell of a ride. Craig, thanks for keeping this thing going for as long as you have. I know that I’ve drifted away, not because of any of you, but because my joy for baseball just isn’t what it once was. Maybe it’s because after the triplets, the hunger just isn’t there anymore. Maybe it’s just the boring brand of Giant’s baseball being played over the last couple of years. Perhaps, life has just carried me in a different direction to pursue other interests. This blog has been a home away from home for me online. The community here, is fantastic. A group of people who likely would never have crossed paths, united by our love of the orange and black. Thank you all for being a part of this group and a part of my life since, maybe 2006? Flavor, from a purely selfish standpoint I hope you get the itch back and you fire this baby up again at some point. But, if you don’t I get that too. When that fire goes out, who knows if it’ll ever come back? I appreciate all of you, and if you’re on twitter add me please if we’re not already following each other. @sfbayn8tive
    Thanks,
    Del aka Sarge

As Christmas is almost done here in The Central Europe area, I’ll wish all Flappers a very Happy and healthy New Year! This place has been a great diversion for me for well over a decade, from the ups and downs of daily life, particularly the downs. Thanks BF for the great management, your consistent attention to it, and all the great ledes you wrote. Also, meeting a fair few of you in person at games was a lot of fun. If this is the end, I wish you and yours all good things to come, and another Giants championship— someday. Come see me if you’re up Seattle way, BF has my email. Cheers! …

Statement game from Warriors. Handled Griz convincingly despite 36 from amazing Ja. I’d watched about half of Griz previous road game vs. equally short handed Suns (minus Booker Cam Johnson Cam Payne but with Chris Paul), whom they blew off the floor by 25. Dunno how Kerr can get them to play like this on road. DeVincenzo looks like great acquisition.

I’ll say this about the new style of play in the NBA. With the players all spread out, it does make for some dramatic dunks, since the middle is often so uncluttered. Gordon had some dramatic dunks in the Nuggets’ win over the Suns last night. Gordon, in his own way, is one of the most exciting players in the NBA.

Anything later than this (and this is somewhat significant versus the “drip drip” since Christmas Eve)?

    https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/giants/mlb-rumors-carlos-correa-not-interested-mets-contract-restructure

    • Locojuan said, on December 27, 2022 at 8:30 am

On MLB Hot Stove this AM, Jon Morosi said that there are other team interested, but in terms of negotiating, he was told it is just Boras and the Mets. He said the Mets deal is different than SF and the talks haven’t collapsed yet. He didn’t mention SF as one of the interested teams, but he thought the Twins could still be in play if they raised their price to the upper $200 level.
He also said that if the 10+ years is off the table that Boston might jump in there for a shorter deal, mentioning that Alex Cora and Correa are friends.
Even if the length of contract was reduced, I gotta think that SF wouldn’t be involved, but who knows?

      • blade3colorado said, on December 27, 2022 at 8:34 am

Yeah, right now his deal doesn’t seem too promising the way it is written right now. Some writer at the NY Post indicated his “source” gives it 55% chance of him staying with the Mets (albeit, Correa is resistant to any significant contract changes at the moment).

      • Locojuan said, on December 27, 2022 at 9:01 am

Yep, saw that too. Morosi emphasized, in terms of actual negotiating, that he heard it was still just the Mets and Correa’s camp, but with Boras involved…
Still, I think it’ll be tough for the Met’s to back out when the owner said they had a deal.

Nice pic in Chron today of Clemente in old Pirates uniform with shoulder length black sleeves.
Almost 50 years to day of his death in plane crash trying to help Nicaragua after quake.
Makes me wonder about today’s “superstars”…who approaches skills/charisma of Clemente?

    • Winder said, on December 27, 2022 at 8:21 am

I don’t see any of today’s players that have the skills of Clemente. The only other player that had the ability to hit garbage pitches like Clemente was F. Robinson. IMO

      • blade3colorado said, on December 27, 2022 at 8:31 am

Agree about no one having the skills of Clemente today . . . One of my favorite players growing up was Manny Sanguillen, a notorious bad ball hitter, that annually hit .300 or better. He was a good defensive catcher as well, #2 to Johnny Bench during that era imo.

      • Winder said, on December 27, 2022 at 9:33 am

Yeah they were both exceptional hitters.

      • djloo27 said, on December 27, 2022 at 9:43 am

Maybe cause I saw him on TV so much, I thought Jerry Grote was the best defensive catcher…

  28. unca_chuck said, on December 27, 2022 at 8:48 am

Not really a fan anymore of Kruk (all time great broadcaster, but I think he’s “a bit long in the tooth” to continue broadcasting). Anywho, he’s spot on here:

“Calm down, and do it now. Some of the things that were said to our organization during this time — I understand passion. I do. It’s what makes an organization great. And this thing got so out of hand so quickly, the last show I did last Thursday, I knew going in that there was no way that I could win this deal. There’s no way. If I said one positive thing in defense of the organization, I was going to get blistered. And I did. I got called things, had emails sent to me, and it was brutal. I didn’t like it. And I didn’t like it because there was nobody listening.”

Krukow said the main frustration Giants fans had was the organization’s silence. Zaidi released a short statement, but otherwise the team hasn’t addressed the situation publicly. Krukow explained that for legal reasons, the Giants had no other choice.

“And (the fans’) comment was: wait a second, there was nobody talking with the Giants organization! They couldn’t,” Krukow said. “They couldn’t because of the legal ramifications of what surrounded the controversy. If they said anything, they ran the risk of being sued by Correa, by Boras, by the players association, by God knows how many others. So you just had to sit there and wear it. And Farhan Zaidi took ungodly heat, just vicious stuff. The stuff that was said to me, it pissed me off but I kind of wrote it off as it’s passion, you have to take the good and the bad. But a lot of the stuff was unfair. And a lot of the stuff said by the talking heads on the radio, it was a joke. It was name-calling, it was vicious, it was uncalled for.”

Kruk seems shocked by the general incivility more than anything.
      It’s nothing new.

Brisbee with a mea culpa at the Athletic Willied that’s gotta do somethin’ for ya

    • willedav said, on December 27, 2022 at 7:52 pm

mm Haven’t read that one but good for him. iirc he was really adamant SF needed big sign, and after shit went sideways with Correa I think he called it and Giants offseason a disaster.
Since he’s topic here, I’ll bring this up.
ChiSox signed G Santos, flamethrower Giants released. He first came up early 2021 and K’d the side in his 1 inning debut and Brisbee was in full over the top saran wrap mode.
Next 2 outings he allowed 5 hits 5 runs 2 bombs and 2 BBs in 2 innings got sent out and never returned. So uh, location mistakes as Kruk would put it.
2022, same thing. He threw 3.2 innings, 2 hits 2 runs 3 BBs. And again, never came back up.

  33. willedav said, on December 27, 2022 at 8:13 pm

Wilt had big advantage, the soft rims at that old Hershey gym allowed him to knock down 28-32 FTs. Normally he was awful and lucky to hit 50%. Al Attles went 8-8 from floor that night.

Did you see Plumlee from Hornets shoot FTs left handed? Form was awful but I think he went 1-4.

    • Macdog said, on December 28, 2022 at 9:01 am

Never say never, but I don’t know about this one. The next-closest is Kobe with 81 in ’06, that’s still 19 shy. The next non-Wilt player is David Thompson with 73 in pre-3 ’78. The highest score since Kobe is Devin Booker with 70 in ’17. Not even close. Also keep in mind the time-management aspect of today’s game. No coach is going have his star player go the full 48 minutes or 50+ minutes if there’s overtime just to chase a record in a meaningless regular season game.

      • willedav said, on December 28, 2022 at 9:30 am

Yeah. Wilt played all 48 all the time in those days including one entire season.

  36. unca_chuck said, on December 28, 2022 at 9:50 am

Greatest and saddest free throws ever made left handed by a right hand shooter was when Loyola Marymount Bo Kimble knocked down 2 FT’s in memory of his fallen teammate the NCAA great scoring leader Hank Gathers, it still gives me chills watching that game in 1990.During the 2nd rd of the NCAA tournament, who collapsed on the court against Portland in the first rd and died an hour and half later from heart failure at 23!

Kings defeated the injury-depleted Nuggets last night. A one-point victory in a very exciting game. Fox really should make the All-Star team this season. A case could be made for Sabonis, too; but Fox, for sure.

Yeah nice W Zum. love Sabonis, playing hurt too. Game winning FT by Malik Monk who had 33 of his own off bench. Kentucky guy playing really well. Kings might regret letting Donte DeVincenzo walk (great pickup for GS) but Monk paying dividends in backcourt for them.

Meanwhile, Coach Cal’s Cats got run out of gym by host Missouri in first SEC league game, 8-4 now and might fall out of Top 25 altogether. yikes

It looks like the Giants won’t really have a platoon at any positions except CF, 1B, and DH. There will probably be a fair bit of switching in the OF, but barring injury or really crappy play or a miracle off season program that reverses Pederson’s defensive decline, the new guys should see a lot of action against same side pitching. Oddly, the loss of Correa may have made them less reliant on platoons.

It’ll be interesting to see if Villar, Davis or Flores gets the most playing time at 3B, but I think you’re right, James. They will need a strong backup at SS, I love Estrada but not at SS.
Also, I hope when they do bring up Kyle Harrison, they don’t mess with him by using him in relief.

Not sure who’s got the edge defensively. Davis is sub-par based on advanced metrics, but he doesn’t make a lot of errors. Villar in 200 innings supposedly showed above average range. Wilmer slotted for 1B against lefties and 2B, on Crawford rest days, I think. He’ll also get his regular PH opportunities. When they face a left hander, Villar at third, Davis the DH? Davis has even batting splits. In that scenario, they won’t have a regular at third, even if it’s not technically a platoon. Failing to settle on a regular at third probably means they’re either all playing well, and the team is benefitting, or collectively sucking.

“Post-traumatic arthritis” could be concern on Correa, according to MD quoted in story from NY Daily News writer Abby Mastrocco that I saw on Yahoo sports.
Um it has been a week (interesting time frame, that) now since Mets did physical last Thursday. hmmnn

Yeah, the Dubs game was killing me. Everyone but DiVincenzo was bricking threes. I’m yelling at the TV ‘Get the ball to Salami!’

    • willedav said, on December 29, 2022 at 2:39 pm

Or Ty Jerome, lol. He’s on his 3rd team in 4 years and killing it. shooting 51% from floor, 39.5 from 3 and 95% FTs. 2 way guy, dang near 50-40-90. 17 points 7 boards 2 assists 1 steal in 30 minutes 0 turnovers last night! Poole had 6 including 2 awful ones in last minute.

  46. willedav said, on December 29, 2022 at 2:47 pm

First Poole fell down while dribbling and lost ball, then Utah sent double teamer toward him and guy deflected his pass out of it and stole ball. Fortunately Draymond was blocking shots at other end and Utah couldn’t score.

Yeah, I really thought the game last night was gonna end up like the other Utah game. Poole kinda loses his shit. Then again, Klay fucked that game up too.

Big win. Crazy to see after almost half the season Dubs have best record in NBA at home, and the worst record on the road. I wonder if that has ever happened before?

Poor Keenan Cahill has died at age 27.
Nothing brings back the emotion of 2010 to me like this video.
Sorry to break this awful news…

I remember going slightly nutty from it in some restaurant/club when me and Mac met
up with SanDog and his daughter a few years ago. I can never contain myself when I hear it.
      This is really sad…

Not surprising but I am surprised no Belt news yet, anywhere.
iirc Z said he was after LH middle IF, and giants do need someone to back up Craw beside Estrada. Maybe Diaz kid shows enough in ST. No more Wilmet anywhere except 1b/DH.

Wow the end(?) of the flapp, I can remember when I first start posting on sports articles in the SF Chronicle/SFGate, I didn’t know any of you back then but I think some of you posted comments also. Then BigFlav created his blog. And off we all went. I loved your comment Craig, “ Irish you are quite possibly the worst Fantasy Baseball participant” so many great memories.
I quit posting out here when COVID hit, other things happening in my life, but I would come out and read the daily postings. Hope everyone has the Happiest of New Year.
