A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One More Sleep

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 29, 2023

And now we sit and wait out just one more day. Irritatingly the game is on at 10am my time which is not exactly in my wheelhouse for watching it live. It’s a fun match up, too.

Who’s your *guy this season? There aren’t a lot to choose from unless you’re down with the retreads and housewife favorites. For me, without question, it’s Blake Sabol. Besides being a dead ringer for Javy Lopez, he’s a great story, too. And someone who could really help us with his bat. Let’s see him draw a start on Thursday and watch him rake a bomb off Cole in one of his 2 at bats before Kap pulls him in the 5th inning for one of his over-managed switcheroo moves.

For me Bryce Johnson similar backstory as Sabol. I’ve been wanting to see a faster Giants team with a great lead off threat and have not had that in years maybe not even a true lead off threat who can run since Brett Butler. Give me someone from that ‘89 team and they will be one of my all-timers…

hell yes. Show me some SPEED! I’m so tired of the boring ass way the game is played today. Gimmie stolen bases and balls hit into the newly created gaps. This year has the potential to finally be fun again.

It is the baseball we grew up on…no stupid DH…that is the baseball I love…

      • Flavor said, on March 29, 2023 at 6:00 am

i don’t hate the DH. What i hate is all the strikeouts and all the balls that should be hits that go right to a defender. And all the wasted time. Hopefully at least 2 of those things get fixed by the new rules as well as the increase in SB’s which will make the game better.

I think we we all enjoyed the way Alen Hanson livened things up a few years ago…

Thairo, going back to where he made his debut April 21 2019. Found the box, wild game vs. Royals where Yanks blew 5 run lead but won it in 10th and Estrada had sac bunt in his only AB that moved winning run into scoring position.

Mr. Ed still my favorite but I guess “my guy” this year is J.D…

In the comments from Mets fans on MLBTR about them DFA-ing Ruf, some said Davis couldn’t hit 95 fastball and couldn’t play 3b. Everyone seemed pissed they gave up so much for Ruf.
Davis showed lot of power last season for Giants. hope he gets a chance to show more of that.

Looks like he’ll start season in Triple-A, but I’d like to see Casey Schmitt get a shot hopefully sooner than later.

I’m going with another flat out long shot speed burner to make the team in infielder Blake Wisely who easily could be the fastest Giant and a LH hitter the Giants lack on the infield for depth.

Always look forward to the start of the baseball season and your daily blog which offers a candid and realistic evaluation of the Giants. I view the offseason as disappointing not so much due to the failure to sign Judge or Correa but the inability to assemble a younger, more balanced roster. Zaidi has his strengths but we’re entering Year 5 of his tenure and the Giants still resemble an imperfect, older group of position players bereft of even one marquee player. After Webb the pitching rotation is filled with question marks and/or pitchers who have spent significant time on the DL. Add to that the limitless spending by the Dodgers and Padres and the ever widening gulf in talent between the Giants and our rivals in southern CA. The 107 win season in 2021 was an outlier not likely to be replicated even on a smaller scale. I believe the most optimistic view of 2023 would have the Giants competing for the last wild card berth.

The biggest change I’m looking forward to is the schedule.
I’d been harping for years that it was ridiculous and boring ass to play the Dbacks and Rockies, even LA, for 19 games a season, when all these other teams/interesting players were out there and we never really get to see them.
Last year, Giants played division foes 76 games.
This year, 52. The delta 24 is now with AL teams, Giants and all NL teams play all AL teams in a series, home or away.
Plus, a dozen fewer games with Doghairs and Pads means more wins for SF.
I’ll go with 86Ws this season. Will just squeak into a WC spot, or just miss it…

Had enough of Charlie Blackmon’s “Your Love” 47 times a year?

  8. snarkk said, on March 29, 2023 at 10:34 am

I saw here that Mets DFA’d Ruf.
I wonder how high on the list the Giants are year to year in players they offload to other teams in one way or another, are DFA’d by the acquiring team within a year. I’m guessing SF has been pretty high on that list in the ZMan era…

    • Flavor said, on March 29, 2023 at 11:47 am

I liked Ruf. I’m a little skeptical that Davis will reproduce what he did last season with.us.

Good to see The Flap back!
My guy is Bart. Also excited about JD and Conforto.
I relish our role as underdog without any insane contracts.
Yet by brother says we still have like a top 12 payroll? Is that true?
Thank you for the wishes for my mom.
I’m here with her now and she is hanging in there.
She is a tough San Franciscan!

    • willedav said, on March 29, 2023 at 2:01 pm

Ah hoping for continued longevity to your Mom and all SanDogs. Dunno what it’s like where you are (Marin?), but it’s rained with high wind most of the day in south bay. Definitely not baseball weather.

Great to hear you’re getting to spend time with her. This has got to be so hard for you.

  11. Winder said, on March 29, 2023 at 1:31 pm

Webb, he’s gotta show strong. We got to get our pitching back to 21 when just about every game included clutch pitching. As far as hitting goes I think it’s gonna be streaky but what I would really like to see is patience at the plate and letting the pitch count go as far as possible. And of course we won’t win games with crappy defensive play. In a perfect world.

  12. xoot said, on March 29, 2023 at 1:36 pm

Schmitt has to come up soon to play great 3B and backup SS. 1B D is weak and we know what weak D does. SP is not good, but for Webb. But the game pace is great and the potential for speed is, too. Bart’s major league arm may finally mean something. Low expectations, but high interest. Some sort of disorder, I suspect.

Offseason news, hope it’s not behind a paywall–love the mention of the antitrust exemption. I recall Bernie tying that to the minor league situation:

For you guys out of the Bay Area, like I am now, what do you do to see the Giants games — MLB or? Is there any way to get the local TV broadcast with Kruk/Kuip, and also the KNBR live radio broadcast. I’m too far away up here in the Seattle area to get any of them on regular channels…

    • Flavor said, on March 29, 2023 at 4:23 pm

Streameast has been working great for NBA this winter. You have to click it then click out of the ad then click it again to get it to work but it’s fine once you get in

    • unca_chuck said, on March 29, 2023 at 4:30 pm

Do you get the local feed for b-ball?, Flav? I get whatever they throw in. And it’s usually the other team.

Baseball at least usually has both feeds on Streameasty.

      • Flavor said, on March 29, 2023 at 4:36 pm

        i get whatever they have.

    • James said, on March 29, 2023 at 4:40 pm

MLB.com does stream the local broadcasts out of area. Not sure how much it costs. Being an attorney and all … I use it while traveling. All the out of area mlb broadcasts, TV and radio, are free to T-Mobile customers, if you activate the subscription this first week of the season, although I believe the T-Mobile sponsored version might be restricted to the phone app. You can’t screencast from the mobile app, either. Presumably, you can use an app for the big screen, if you’re a paying customer.

    • Winder said, on March 29, 2023 at 5:25 pm

Same for me up in Oregon. Every once in awhile I get to see a game but it’s mostly out of market. I just don’t want to pay MLB.

    • Locojuan said, on March 29, 2023 at 8:18 pm

I moved to NC in 08 and I bought the MLB package in 09, been with it since. Computer, Firestick on the tube and phone, plus you can replay games.

  14. unca_chuck said, on March 29, 2023 at 4:28 pm

As usual, I’m on the old post wondering why people aren’t posting.

Good to hear that, Dawg! 98 years a a good long time, and cherish what you have while you can.

Do we have any OFers worth a tinker’s damn?

    Conforto it is!!!! He’ll be the 2nd coming of . . . of . . . Chili Dog?

  15. James said, on March 29, 2023 at 4:49 pm

Gotta wait to see who generates the most unwarranted fan hatred before settling on the B. Belt replacement. But I do like Sabol. Really hope he can throw out a baserunner or two.

    • Macdog said, on March 29, 2023 at 7:20 pm

There’s still Tyler Rogers to kick around — and now his twin brother, too!

      • James said, on March 29, 2023 at 8:20 pm

Duh, just tossing off a rote line, when my next number 1 hero has been there in plain sight all along. He may have already taken over last year without my acknowledgment. The first time TnT combine to piss away a victory will be memorable.

  16. Locojuan said, on March 29, 2023 at 8:23 pm

My guy this year is going to be Villar.
