Disrespectful Roster Moves
Today we got steamrolled by a stud pitcher. It happens. I didn’t see the game but I started thinking about the roster moves they made today and it started irritating me so today’s thread is tomorrow’s thread. To be honest this is why i re-started the blog, to vent……
Let’s start with Bryce Johnson. Is he a prospect? Eh, probably not. But he was very good in Spring Training hitting .310 while being a perfect 12 for 12 in SB attempts. This guy was drafted by us in 2017. A 6th round pick. Instead of rewarding a homegrown guy with an opening day roster spot we jettison him for…..Matt Beaty? Why? Why are you trying your best and doing, frankly, everything you can do in Spring Training, only to be sent away for…..Matt Beaty?
Ok now Stephen Piscotty. Nice Stanford lad. Knows how to hit bombs. Absolutely Bay Area homegrown from birth. But did that matter? Not to Zaidi. Even with all these injured outfielders they ignore Piscotty and he’s got to end up asking for his release. So kind of them to honor that request.
David Villar was supposed to be the starting 3rd baseman right? Homegrown guy finally getting his shot? Nope, not today. He’s on the bench.
Joey Bart….you don’t get to start. Come on man, Roberto Perez? On Opening Day?????
Running a baseball team isn’t just punching numbers into your calculator. The Giants had a great opportunity to respect the hard work of their minor leaguers and native Bay Area guys and they rejected all of that.
It’s tone deaf shit and another reason why I don’t like Zaidi or Kap…..
What is wrong with you Flav??? Obviously that is what the computers told Kap and Farhan to do today…
At least Beaty didn’t start. Villar’s 3B. Show some confidence. Villar, Crawford, Thairo–not a bad basic IF. You want Wilmer in the game to show respect? Use the DH. Or 1B, where he can flail as well as Wade. Infuriating opener.
Does this quote from Kapler make any sense??
…although it certainly has to be disappointing for Johnson, who was taken off the 40-man roster in the offseason and appeared to have a road back.
“He had a fantastic spring, ran the bases very well, as we all saw, and I think made every possible push to be on our Opening Day roster,” Kapler said. “We got to the end and it wasn’t right for Opening Day, necessarily, but it could be right at another time pretty soon.”
Guy had a solid spring lead baseball in steals, yeah let’s not put him on the roster…
Matt Beaty sucks. He couldn’t make the Royals roster. It was a slap in the face to ALL the Giants AAA guys to bail on Johnson for this stiff.
Joey Bart will need to start and go off let’s go Giants. Webb had a ton of strikeouts!!
oh my. The great Marco has arrived. And spoken! Dude I hope you come back to the Flap and post regularly. Bookmark this site!!!!!
Regarding the marriage proposal fiasco at Dodger Stadium, I’ve said before how much I dislike “down on one knee” proposals, which started who knows where. It puts enormous pressure on the women to say yes, maybe before she’s ready to, and then says yes because she doesn’t want to embarrass the guy and get him angry, and he might break off the relationship.
And it’s all a fake chivalry thing anyway. Really quite silly, IMO.
Hey wait, you said Bart didn’t start ’cause he sucks!
Joey Bart probably does suck. He was, at best, a wasted 1st round pick. But come on man Roberto Perez? You throw Bart, Johnson, Piscotty and Villar out there today and i GUARANFUCKINGTEE you they don’t do worse than getting shut out.
Agreed!
Dirt chiming in on twitter….
Um, lot of noise spent on Bryce Johnson… “Is he a prospect? Eh, probably not.” All you need to know right there. ONLY reason he was this close at all is because Slater, a real CF, and Haniger are both hurt. Beaty likely won’t last long either but Johnson wasn’t gonna make the team to begin with. He looked in good in ST, lol. That’s fantastic brutha, but meaningless.
It’s not like they deported the guy to Outer Mongolia, he’ll be in Sac with chance to return. And that’s all the Giants owe this guy, who hasn’t done anything at all in MLB at age 27. The rewarding the prospect stuff is puro nonsense.
Alex Wood is also a “Dodger retread” and so is Joc, Giants best hitter last season. Z and Kap knew Beaty from their time there and Kap said they were interested in Beaty with Royals, where it would have cost them a player in a trade before they cut him at last minute. Instead they got him for cash and if he does suck they’ll dump the guy.
Unlike Johnson he does have legit MLB experience with some decent high OB numbers in LA. .725 ml OPS. Johnson last year .769 in Sac, slightly worse than what he did year before.
Webb pitched a good game but Cole pitched a gem. Hopefully we can make some contact tomorrow.
The Flap is back; yay!!
All the best to San Dog. We’re thinking about you.
I basically like all the new rules except for the ghost runner. That’s just cheesy.
The Kings are in the playoffs!
Of the Giants, the player I’m most pulling for is Thairo to have a break our season.
“break out”
to not understand why it’s important to reward your minor league players for hard work is to be clueless about how teams work. I could get on board with not adding Bryce Johnson to the opening day roster if you had a better option. But Matt Beaty sucks. He’s a terrible journeyman. And Johnson played great in ST and has been working his ass off for fucking peanuts for years. They were gonna get worked yesterday either way. Add Johnson and give him that PH at bat that Beaty got. If you were so desperate to add shitty Beaty to the team then do it on Friday and send Johnson down then. At least Johnson would have gotten acknowledged by his team and fuck this he earned that game…….
“We’re not actively seeking to fill any specific position,” Zaidi said. “We like the internal options we have even with some injuries. We’re excited about some of the guys who have stepped forward in this camp. And it’s a good thing culturally to be able to reward those guys. So I fully expect this to stay internal.” – This was from last Friday, Farhan is just plain addicted to the waiver wire.
man, if any of you guys understand what Stix is struggling with PLEASE email him or try solving the problem in the comment section here….

to me
Flav: Their AI is still at it. Twice they recommended “strong” passwords. So I gave in twice. Used their suggestions. Still no dice.
Enjoyed your comments about the disrespect to Johnson and Villar. Webb made exactly one mistake pitch…evidently it was a sinker that turned into a stinker…right down the pike. Judge is a force of nature. Brebbia Aisle could have earned his street credit by throwing one close to Judge’s kneecap, for the way he used the Giants. Playing Yaz and then batting him in the Enforcer position (#5) was utter stupidity. Tyler should have gotten the call instead of Brebbia when Webb (who should have been yanked at 85 pitches through the previous inning. No dice. Kapler dumbed out and not only didn’t pull him after a courageous effort, but then replaced him with a guy who was basically shit during S.T. Giving up on Piscotty for Beaty was dumb of the front orfice. Have some of those guys been smoking the wrong stuff?
If it wasn’t for ego or pride, Kapler should not have started Webb today, but one of the other starters. Why? With Cole completely on his game, all it would have taken today would have been that early bomb by Judge to win that game. Webb is far superior to the YankMe’s 2,3,4,5 pitchers. Sacrificing game one to win the other two…or at least have decent chances of doing so, would have been an intriguing strategy.
Thanks again for restoring the Flap. Sooner or later, I shall do all I can to break through the WordPress Barrier. -stix
It would’ve been disrespectful not to start Webb.
I don’t think Herman Franks would’ve started Bob Bolin over Marichal.
What guarantee was there that Cole would be on his game?
Especially on a cold day without his spider tack…
Stix isn’t providing enough info about his issue(s). He was able to post twice as Carstie Clausen on 3/26 and those posts were about having problems getting in, but he had to be logged in to post those. So, my question to him would be, what is he doing differently now?
Exactly. The only way I can figure out why he can’t get in is because he cleared his cache and/or he is failing to note his new password. It’s obvious that he is using Google and they use the verbiage, “suggested strong password” (or similar language). If he goes to settings on his browser and types in Password, he will find his list of passwords. Frequently, I have 2-3 passwords for each site because I failed to delete the old ones. So, he should try each of them and he will undoubtedly get in. He should also delete old passwords that are no longer valid on the tools, password setting.
It’s amazing to me that Stix is so knowledgeable about a variety of subjects, but can’t figure out this password thing.
What’s the love affair with Lamont Wade?
He needed 3 hits on the last day of the season to creep over the Mendoza line.
He’s as bad as Yaz.
Giants 2021 season was the biggest sports aberration since Buster Douglas…
yes. And one thing I will admit is that 2021 totally fucked Z because it meant he had to stop the re-build and act like that was actually a 107 win team that just needed some fine tuning. 2021 set us back 5 years.
this was, without question, the best thing I’ve ever seen at Dodger Stadium
I also kinda like what Stix said. Why burn Webb in a game you’re probably going to lose anyway? Why not do a bullpen game, then everyone has a chance to recover on Fri, then go with Webb vs whoever that guy is they’re pitching, I’ve never heard of him.
I remain not a fan of the Giants starting every dang season on the road.
Well, it took three years, but Covid finally got me. I’m vaxxed and boosted, and my body is doing a pretty good job fighting the illness so far.
I still haven’t gotten it!
I went to a local theater performance, and that’s possibly where I got it.
It’s an insidious illness; it goes after your breathing.
Hope you’re feeling back to normal ASAP, Zumiee.
I’ve had 5 shots total which I think is the maximum anyone could have.
As far as I know, I haven’t gotten it but I’ve been having a bunch of health
issues that have given me some of that vax paranoia.
Not looking to start any wacky debates.
I’m sure getting up in age and a few other things are contributing.
Probably never know for sure…
Thanks, Loo.
It’s definitely a drag to be not feeling well.
Opening Day over reaction. Um, the Rockies are in first place. Last season SF went 14-7 in April and spent 9 days in first before going 47-61 next 4 months. One game out of 162 in 6 month season and not a harbinger of Things to Come.
For NYC guys coming back, JD Wilmet Thairo Conforto, cool.
Perez with chance to catch the Ace and maybe cement something, plus Wisely and Sabol also cool. Craw vs. Cole rematch with spouses there, OK “rivalry-bragging rights” matchup.
Everyone else has forgotten it I hope. Villar and Bart will play a lot.
It’s interesting to see the media’s attitude towards Doncic starting to change. That happens to a star player eventually when a team isn’t getting to a championship level.
The sports media goes on and on about the greatness of the amazing Ohtani and Trout, but a lot of baseball fans are like “well, their team doesn’t even make the playoffs.”
Willie, thanks for the book reviews. I’m always looking for book recommendations.
I’ve been reading the latest novel of one of my favorite authors, Kingsolver, “Demon Copperhead.” It’s gotten rave viewers, and it’s a good novel, but not great, IMO. I’m kind of wondering what all the fuss is about. It IS impressive that she wrote the novel from the point of view of a boy growing up in opiates-racked Appalachia. But once you get past that achievement, the story itself is kind of average, IMO.
I’ve gotten into audiobooks and am listening to a history book called Washington’s Crossing, about the year 1776 in the American Revolution. It has lots of interesting stuff I’ve never read in a book about the Revolution
You’re welcome Zum, hope you feel better soon.
Read something I really liked, newest by long time fav Brit author Kate Atkinson, novel set in 1920s pre Crash era London. “Shrines of Gaiety”, loosely based on famous businesswoman she researched.
In listening to audiobooks, it’s so nice to be read to. Let someone else do the work of the reading. It’s like comfort food.
We’ve been enjoying audiobooks when we are going on long road trips.
The media is going after Doncic because he whines like a bitch EVERY SINGLE TIME he doesn’t get a call
I just spent 20 minutes typing a long beautiful post and it just disappeared when I went to Google something. So less eloquently, I’m just gonna say. Same old boring same. This regime seems like it has no plan other than to tread water and hope these prospects that have been bandied about for years finally pan out and have an impact. Although that feels more unlikely as time goes on. It’s a shame that the two names we heard about all spring didn’t make the team. Johnson and Schmitt. Here’s to another boring .500 season.
Yeah, it’s cool how you can go through lots of books that way. Audiobooks have increased my book consumption.
Oops, that was meant to be a reply to Bozo’s post.
Actually, Locojuan, I should now say.
Hah, no worries Zum. When I changed it I didn’t think I’d be posting on the Flap anymore and just wanted a different moniker, but Bozo doesn’t bother me.
For about the past year, I could only post to the Flap from my laptop and not from my phone, no matter what I tried. Whatever changes BF made to the settings, I can now post from my phone again. Yay!
Same here. A huge part of why I wasn’t really here very much.
Giants have extra hitter right now (14), so by next week I’d imagine one of them goes down or off roster. Day off Tuesday in middle of ChiSox series, then 8 games before another day off after Dogs leave town. Then another long stretch without day off.
Saw someone in Athletic post that River Cats game is on MilbTV tonight iirc.
Flav, if you are bummed for not rewarding Bryce, then how the hell can you say throw a BP game opening day instead of starting Webb?
I’m not too thrilled with these weird-ass Batt Meaty moves, but it’s day 1, ffs. Neither of them would be out there if Slater or Haniger were available. Then again, this is a team full of middling shit, so this will be the case all year. Mix-n-match as guys fall on and off the IR.
It’s fucking baseball. Can’t we keep guys o the field? It’s absolutely ridiculous that so many guys get hurt playing this game.
I wasn’t married to the BP game idea. I’m just saying it would have been a good idea. And not rewarding guys like Bryce J for working his ass off and performing in ST is fucking criminal. Farhan can suck a dick. Yesterday was Game 1 and he’s still fiddling around with the fucking roster. Fuck him.
If last year proved anything, it’s that signing and tossing AAAA dog shit looking for the occasional peanut among the turds is an exercise in futility. I really thought we’d settle the lineup this last offseason, but here we are signing Batt Meaty and the Bowker gang redux.
And I’ll say it again, passing on Bell was ludicrous. This team has oodles to spend and could have nailed down 1st base for cheap but instead we will have the platoon shit. Again.
I really really hope this team isn’t gonna be the walking wounded garbage dump of cast-offs and has-beens it was last year. They DID settle the pen down, and I’m farily OK with the pitching staff, but the hitting cupboard looks bare. baer. bear. beer!
Yeah, I have the same issues w/my phone. I have to re-log in every time I post on my site, and it isn’t worth the hassle. On yours, I can’t even post. I simply get thrown out trying to log in and posts get lost.
Yeah as usual Kapler&Z pull their last second BS..
Kapsize saying:Yes we all saw it Bryce Johnson had an excellent ST , hitting, running 12-12 SB’s , defense, but he wasn’t ready to be on are opening day roster right now. Wtf does that suppose to mean?
But of course once they’re last second acquisition of Beatnutts and this pathetic lovefeast K&J still have with the Dodgers it sealed a disappointed Johnson’s fate..
I followed ST and really enjoyed listening to and occasionally watching the first five, six innings of the games. Guys were playing hard, trying to make the team. Yesterday was the opposite. Webb’s strike throwing was a good sign, but the dearth of offense was pathetic. Strange start to a season.
Palo Alto, a critical history by a brilliant kid, Malcolm Harris, is as scintillating as a tome can be. The middle chapter, covering 1945 to 1975, would be of interest to anyone who grew up in the valley then. Good if grudging reviews from the usual high end arbiters.
e.g., this guy, who doesn’t waste time grinding his own ax:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/books/2023/02/09/palo-alto-malcolm-harris-review/
Thanks for that xoot. As a kid who spent most of his years living two blocks from the Menlo Park border to Palo Alto I still have some real fond memories growing up there. The house my dad bought for $15,000 now goes for over $2,000,000 and they are paying over $23,000 in property taxes yearly. Since I am not part of that money I just find that a little obscene.
zumiee- fun books for me is stuff by Edward Rutherfurd, and Larry McMurtry. I love authors that can weave characters who are memorable.
Opening day was disappointing but not sure how other teams would have handled Cole. We will know soon enough how Kap is gonna run things. My big beef with the way he coaches is that he sticks with the cold hand when there are options.
I have all of the Rutherfurd books. I’ve read three of them so far: Sarum, Paris, and New York. They’re all great. I’m looking forward to reading the others. He’s a genius at covering hundreds of years, with characters you care about all along the way. The combination of the big picture and the closely personal picture. It makes for very long books, but that’s OK.
Yeah, I got em all too except Dublin because they don’t have it electronically at least at Amazon they don’t. Just finished China, and almost done with Russka. Did read Sarum, and the Forest. Good stuff.
Ha- I had to repost this. I totally posted it in the wrong place, as a reply. I’m still getting used to posting again from my phone.

Zumie I have never had Covid but I assume it just knocks your body down a few days? Fever, headaches, sore throat, etc? Any way take care and theirs still a marathon worth of Colombo &Beatles to watch and listen too!
When the 8 hour Beatles documentary from the Let It Be sessions made it to NetFlix, finally, I got to see it. So wonderful to see them all alive again and joking around, and playing music together. There’s some tension at times, too. They had put themselves under a crazy time frame for the film. But a bunch of myths about those sessions were dispelled in that documentary. They clearly still loved each other. They were like brothers who were also work partners, and that can create some friction at times. ACTUAL brothers in bands had incredibly explosive relationships, such as the Kinks and Oasis. Liam and Noel Gallagher haven’t been in the same room or spoken to each other in years. Liam refers to Noel as “the potato,” because he thinks Noel looks like a potato.
Regarding Covid I’m very glad to have missed the harsher strains of Covid from earlier on. At the beginning I had a puzzling extra tiredness a few nights ago and suddenly my temperature felt like it was going up. I took my temperature and it was 100. I did a Covid test and was startled by how quickly the test indicated positive.
For about the next 30 hours my temperature fluctuated between 100 and 102, but then the fever broke and was gone. And then I coughed and was startled by how much phlegm I coughed up. I had no idea I was building up phlegm. I actually choked on it for a moment. That scared me and made me ready for it the next time. So I occasionally cough up some phlegm, but at least I know it’s coming and can manage it fairly well. It’s not a regular hacking cough. Overall I actually do feel like it’s getting better. Less phlegm being coughed up. I remember doctors on TV saying do deep breathing exercises. Exercise those lungs and capacity. And people that have had Covid have told me to drink a lot of fluids to help flush out the disease.

I’ve been told that the medical community in NY is generally unconcerned…
Xoot, thanks for the book recommendation. Thanks to everyone who recommended books. I’m adding all of them to my list, because they’re exactly the type of thing I like to read. Books that look at events in a particular place and time in history, telling stories that haven’t been told yet or were forgotten over the years.
A few sportswriters have tentatively tried to put the Kings’ Sabonis into the MVP conversation. There’s no way he’d win it, but he is the leader in rebounds and double/doubles. And he’s help take the Kings from dire nothingness to the 3rd seed in the Western conference. I mean, there is kind of a case there. But….the basketball media, especially the East coast media, have already decided who the two or three contenders for the award are.
Sabonis impressed the hell out of me when the Kings beat the Nets a couple weeks ago.
Agreed Mac. He’s a different player in this system, bringing ball up court and leading break like D Green does off rebound. He’s better passer and shooter, and does lot of handoff and screening from high post to set others up, old school high post game. Love that offense.
Kings are fun to watch.
I think he had a double-double by halftime vs. Nets.
Brian Murphy of KNBR (the Giants home radio station if anyone out there doesn’t know) goes off on the Matt Beaty situation:
https://www.knbr.com/2023/03/31/murph-the-matt-beaty-moment-made-for-a-salty-opening-day/
good for him. He’s spot on.
All the teams in the West want to play the Kings in the first round. Some players on other teams have said it. They believe that the Kings’ playoff inexperience will make for a guaranteed winning series for the Kings’ opponent. I’d like to see that proved wrong. 🙂
i put $20 on the kings to win it all at 100-1 about 2 months ago. Hey, you never know. They have a great offense.
Harrison Barnes says hello.
I think it was 750:1 at the start of the season. Someone put $10,000 on that. Not so funny now, but this was a few months ago. Was this you, Zumie?
Ha! No.
Giants sign Gary Sanchez. He can’t hit a ball that turns. Good luck with that. Jesus Christ just trade Bart at this point. Sell low. It’s just hilarious the things they’ll do to not play this guy.
Rangers come to town in August. Wonder if Bochy will have more wins than Kap. I’m choosing my live games carefully these days. That series looks interesting.
Should they retire his number?
Yep. Sure.
It’s a slam dunk it’ll happen eventually, I would think.
They should, but not in August if the Giants are doing what we expect them to do. The effusions for Bochy and the boos for Kap would be bad PR.
Re: Covid, after avoiding it through the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, I finally got it last September (very tight and crowded classroom situation, unfortunately, it became a Covid factory). Felt like crap for a week or so, but it wasn’t debilitating, just a mild flu, really. But these days I’ve been struggling since Christmas with horrible vertigo that docs can’t figure out, so they say “maybe it’s long Covid”. I’ve known people who also have fought “long Covid”. Maybe docs just say that when they can’t figure out what else it might be…. If it is long Covid, it’s far worse than the Covid was.
That really sucks, Paul.
Can’t they help you with that?

I’ve been told that the medical community in NY is generally unconcerned…”
Yeah, that was a puzzling view on their part at that time, given what was happening in Asia at that time.
That info came from my friend’s daughter – a doctor in a prominent NYC hospital…
I had to visit a doctor last Nov, turned out to be nothing but age; the guy told me he hadn’t seen a single Covid case in months.
I’m predicting these Giants uniform numbers will be eventually retired, now that the Giants have done away with the ridiculous “has to be a Hall of Famer” requirement.
15
28
18
55
40
Maybe 35 has a small chance
Giants who’ve worn 18 since Cain…
Connor Joe
Drew Smyly
Tommy La Stella
Shelby Miller
Yeah, but a bunch of guys wore 22 after Will Clark.
I think if Baer is wise about it, he can slowly retire those numbers over the years. Each time will be a huge event, and Baer really likes huge events.
35 can be Speier and Crawfish. Like 22 can be Jack and Will.
15? I agree 35 is a long shot. Otherwise, retire em all. With appropriate celebrations.
ah, Bochy wore 15. I’d say go for the 55 retirement first.
“willedav on March 31, 2023 at 5:35 pm
Harrison Barnes says hello.”
Barnes has been a perfect fit for the Kings. He’s developed a strong drive to the basket slow motion Euro step and gives the offense that dimension. He’s also a pretty good 3-point shooter. But also gives the team an older veteran who’s been in the NBA tough battles over the years and can share things from his experience.
Fox gives the team a great mid-range shooter. He has such nice touch on those shots. He can drive the ball in pretty well, too. His 3-point shot is still a work in progress. Sabonis gives the team a Draymond Green type on offense. Someone to run the offense through, a great passer. And will occasional show his strong post-up moves. The coach is always encouraging him to shoot more.
The team has a bunch of 3-point shooters, which is not the NBA I would have chosen, but it is what it is.
Does La Stella make the top 10 of Giants free agent busts of all time. I think he might.
Benitez, Stennett, DeLaRosa, McGeehee, Ponson, Smargjhlkdfjshg, Cueto, LaStella, Gyorko, Cutch off the top of my head. I’m sure there are other obvious choices.
Yikes, that’s quite a list.
Ponson was a deadline deal iirc…
Right for once. They got the useless slob specifically to be their #2 after Schmidt…
July 31, 2003: Traded by the Baltimore Orioles to the San Francisco Giants for Ryan Hannaman (minors), Kurt Ainsworth and Damian Moss.
Yeah I remember a season ticket A’s fan friend telling me after the trade that summer, I’ve seen that guy. He won’t do shit for you guys.
Aaahh.
I would put Zito up there also
shocked you missed Zito and Rowand
Speaking of 3-point shooting, the Kings’ rookie Murray broke the NBA record for 3s in a season. He won’t win Rookie of the Year, but he’s been an effective player for the Kings. I wouldn’t go so far yet to say “impact player.” Time will tell. There are things he can improve on.
I meant rookie record.
His brother Kris ain’t bad either.
Zumie, good luck to you on the Covid fight.
My wife’s stepmom and her husband in TX are down with Covid. They don’t go out much, they think they got it at a grocery store. One has bad athsma, the other has fairly severe kidney disease. They’re hangin’ in, they’re vaxxed up as much as they can be.
The guy painting the inside of our new house up here got Covid about 5-6 weeks ago — his whole family got it. He kept away from us obviously and stopped the job until coming back this week. Says he feels ok.
Early January, the people up here we rented our short term rental house from all came down with Covid. They were down about 2 weeks.
It’s around…
Hope you get through it quickly and easily, Zumie. Seems to be fairly benign these days, but who knows all the variants. I don’t know anyone around me who has gotten it for 6 months though.
Don’t know how I’ve avoided it. 2 shots, one booster a year and a half ago? I’ve have been to multiple concerts, plane flights, and all my kids have had it. And my wife. And she slept next to me the whole time she had it. Maybe whiskey kills it. Or vitamin C.
Naturally I’ll get it tomorrow.
Speaking of Beatles, no, speaking of beetles. Here’s the science headline of the day:
https://www.sciencealert.com/beetles-hydrate-by-drinking-through-their-butt-holes-heres-how-they-do-it
