Opening Day
Pretty cool to start right out of the gate in New York. Thairo gotta be chomping at the bit for this chance to do some damage vs his old team. Honestly, after Cole quickly disposes of us today and we have a day off to get over that we really do have a decent chance to win the next 2 games. At least if you’re just looking at the pitching match ups.
Prediction time! I used to love making season predictions until I realized the team we are making predictions about TODAY will be nothing like the team we will be watching in September. So really my prediction is just a carryover of my feelings about how this off season went. I wanted to come in at .500 because that is a perfect label for the boring team Farhan has put together. Nobody remembers .500. But I couldn’t pull the trigger. I think we are an injury or two away from having to dip into the minor league system and all hell could break loose at that point. I’ll say we win 75 games in 2023. And if our AAA guys do nothing this season when they’re called up Zaidi needs to go……
and just to further bum you out…….
That 40/1 odds for the Twins and Angels might not be bad longshots.
Mets 8-1. You know they will have a couple more arm injuries.
I’m sticking with my 85 wins. Villar 2-4, HR and a double today.
78 wins for me and Farhan has until the start of next year to demonstrate he can bring in a couple big name free agents…
this is year number SIX for him
Two seasons removed from the unexpected 107 win season, developing Casey Schmitt (is he a Farhan draftee?), into hopefully a starter next season and knowing they went hard after Judge and wisely got out of the Correa deal buys one more off-season for him from me. But the rope is thin and by end of next season we need to be if not in the playoffs have a strong winning season with 4-5 locked in future position players Schmitt level supplemented with a couple legit longer term free agents for next half dozen years in place without only a couple of dumpster dives then he gets more length in the rope…
Well that is ridiculous.
Oops, I forgot to wish y’all a happy new year. Today we are tied for 1st.
Hey guys . . . Saw on Twitter that Flav is giving this another go. Congratulations!
Going to go with a .500 season and a positive “head nod” to Giant Head’s post above at 6:30am . . . Regarding the rule changes, a simple fix would be to set the clock back to 1968, prior to the mound height rule in 1969; DH in 1973; commercials that extend the game by an hour; and the pitcher roster size increases that began to impact the game offensively (lack thereof) in the 2000s.
I am so tired of the two predominant outcomes – strike out or homerun . . . then another commercial.
What were odds of Phils getting to WS this time last year? They finished 3rd in NL East with 87 Ws, way behind Mets, then went 9-2 vs. ATL STL and Pads, and took Stros to 6. Not like SF hasn’t won it all before from WC.
Cautiously optimistic pitching holds up, defense is good enough to help them win more in style of torture games. LA doesn’t come in with near as strong team as per last couple years imo and maybe fewer games vs. West helps Giants out.
And yes, lot of attention paid to farm to see who advances.
Bryce Johnson back down to AAA. Giants pick up Matt Beaty, former Dodger.
boo
Piscotty released, Beaty will be in NY in time for the game.
How’d you like to be Sabol. Score the start in LF today! And then you accept the cold reality that this year is it for your Giants career……#17inarow #andcounting
FA argument is kind of odd one to chastize Z for. Wasn’t getting out of big long term contracts of Sabes era supposed to be a plus? When Giants won, it wasn’t because of high priced talent, it was more the role players and pen guys plus the occasional Marco Scutaro.
Gausman was great signing and could have been retained, but at quite a cost. Rodon was great signing too (and Pederson and Cobb perfectly fine adds), same deal–do you trust he will hold up for 6 years/$100 mil? Z also acquired Bryant in 2021 and it was pretty good thing he signed elsewhere. Not in favor of the massive 10 year deals given out this off season myself, especially to likes of Xander Bogaerts.
Only 1 team will get Ohtani no matter how much $$ is thrown his way.
Excellent points Willie.
I am going for a .500 season. Hopefully we can play the AL good this year or it could get ugly. But I agree we are a couple of injuries away from starting all over again. The league is still all about pitching and I doubt we have the horses to compete. If our BP holds up maybe.
87 wins for my prediction. Farhan nowhere near a hot seat for me. Giants are idiots if they get rid of him.
I have zero complaints with the off season. Thank goodness we got out of that awful Correa contract. Yes, we are massively outmanned by Pads and Dogs. Bring it on and lets see what happens.
Make right field play more fairly and clean up the city IMO would help in attracting free agents as much as anything. I don’t think the issue is our sales pitch or unwillingness to spend $$$.
momz update?
Still hanging in there. Resting peacefully most of the time now, thankfully. Aggressive hospice nurse was here yesterday and my mom said “she’s pushy” while she was sitting right there and also asked if she was an RN while she was examining her. Very on brand comments from my mom. Good to see she still has a little feistiness in her.
just read the Giants ownership will definitely exercise the option on Farhan for ’24 and does not preclude an extension…
Agree with all of the above, although not sure Judge was worried that our street bums might be even more unsavory than NYC’s. I think the era of simple bottom line hiring/firing of leadership is fading. If you’re smart, foster a good work environment, and make logical operational decisions, an equally smart owner will recognize that luck plays a huge role in baseball outcomes.
there are Giants-White Sox tickets available behind Giants dugout 10th row for just $19…wtf???
That ain’t the case at Yankee Stadium this weekend.
Wow! Last season, my parents and 4 other relatives spent $400 a piece behind backstop a couple or few rows back. Of course, that was one of the Dodger games mid-season.
Yeah, 17th straight year with a different guy from last season starting in LF on Opening Day. Could be a MLB record. The Giants inability to grow over decades a real MLB outfielder in the farm system continues to astound and confound me…
Matt Beaty (who the F is he?) was re-assigned to the minors by the Royals. Then the Giants picked him up for cash. We’re taking Sloppy Seconds from the Royals? After an entire Spring Training management couldn’t identify a player in the entire Giants system that would be just as good or better? I don’t get it, accept for the ex-Dodger connection, which seems tenuous, at best. This is the kind of stuff that makes Giants fans doubt that a grand scheme and plan is afoot and working, 5 years in. I’ve been all in with Farhan, but I’m starting to have my doubts. Where are the Farhan farmhands contributing in a major way? Need to see ’em, soon…
i mean, our outfielders suck and some of them are hurt. We have nothing in the minor leagues. Picking up Beaty makes sense to me considering all of that.
I think he’ll be DFA’d before May starts…
at some point having shit in the minors needs to be a referendum on Zaidi. Why do you Z guys give him a pass on the minors?
This is the year when some minor leaguers he chose need to show up. If they don’t, then I’m seriously questioning WTF he’s doing. SabEvans was in fans crosshairs for dropping the ball on the minor league system. Farhan can’t be immune to the same critique…
Sabes was around for nearly 20 years and many of his drafts sucked. Which is ok, because if you stick around for that long, it’ll be true for any GM.
Sabes had a pretty good run with AS picks in Timmy, Cain, Buster, Wilson, Romo, Panda, Crawford, Belt and Panik. I don’t remember if Dirty was an AS but he was a pretty good pick. Luciano could end up on that list. Bart is probably a longshot to be on that list but we’ll see.
Yes, but the reverse is also true. Stick around for 20 years, and any GM will very likely find a handful of really good players.
The game is on the MLB TV channel today. They are also running promos and pregame stuff from Yankeetown right now.
82-80, and that’s being optimistic. Perez over Bart today, what’s up with that?
Bart sucks?
I’d still prefer Bart over a 34YO career backup.
Seeing how Perez does to inform a Sabol decision?
Jesus who the fuck are these coaches?
Brebbia shaved off his beard.
Thairo and Joc look fat.
JD and Yaz look skinny.
I predict the season will be interrupted by a nuclear war with Russia…
I think you mean China, Loo.
Here we go! I just think the pitching will be solid. 86 wins. I mean we can win 4 more than last year’s revolving door of AAAA guys for the first 4 months. Right? Can’t we?
WTF?? I’m getting “No matches” when I pick MLB on Streameast.
Checked out Dogs starting lineup: 35 yr old J D Martinez at DH 35 yr old D Peralta in LF, James Outman in CF M Vargas at 2b and new SS not named Trea Turner.
In the immortal words of Roger Waters, the dogs are dead.
Checked out Dogs starting lineup: 35 yr old J D Martinez at DH 35 yr old D Peralta in LF, James Outman in CF M Vargas at 2b and new SS not named Trea Turner, Miguel Rojas. Dogs farm always highly rated and they will be relying on it a lot.
My friend is “freezing his dick off” in the RF upper deck…
Should’ve got the Pinstripe Pass.
No Villar?
Giants on pace for 27 Ks.
Judge on pace for 634 HRs…
That is a ridiculous start of the season…
Ballgame.
yeah, that just might be enough.
Still on K pace.
Never thought I’d be excited for a groundout.
Judge showing out the gate why he was NEVER going to come to SF…
I’ll trade our SB for the other true outcome.
Just saw Verlander injury IL…see my comment above re Mets…
Fucking Yaz be Yazzing. 6 swings and misses in 2 ABs.
IMO he should be on a short leash. He’s still a sucker for high fastballs, everybody knows it, and he can’t seem to fix that after 2 seasons of it. He’s not making enough coin to be immune to a trade or DFA. Good story, but ya gotta deliver. If he hit .230 with 25 dingers, OK, but that’s not going to happen…
Bad enough he’s still on the squad, but he’s batting 5th too.
Could be headed for a 15+ K game for Cole — even if he gets pulled early for early season safety. Webb more than holding his own..
It’s John & Susie time for me.
Doh.
I said somewhere at some time this offseason if Yaz is our starting CFer, we didn’t do enough to improve the team.
He has to go…rather give Bryce Johnson the shot…
Someone take advantage of the RF porch.
Fuck Wandy. Got to hit this clown.
I see my long shot Brett Wisely made the roster!
Incredible Speed, a LH infield bat that can playCF/SS are 2B and is a major upgrade over Donnie good night Ellen and ma&pa Walton clan! Go get him kid!
Giants came in again at 5th most valuable MLB franchise in the most recent Forbes valuation study. $3.7 billion. They need to start soon wielding on-field talent consistently commensurate with the valuation…
https://www.forbes.com/teams/san-francisco-giants/?sh=4a569c662064
More than serviceable first of the season effort for Webb. He gave up two dingers, but S happens against this version of the Yanks…
Brebbia another waste of roster space.
And here comes the shit effort from the Brebbia Aisle!
Better try growing the beard back cause the clean shaven ain’t cutting it..
fearful today is a microcosm of what is to come…30 combined strikeouts so far which I think he said is an opening day record yikes…
Yeah, this is the year that the farm has to produce something. Yeah, COVID fucked shit up, and the MLB powers that be decimated the minors, but year 5 has little to bear from the guys Farhan has drafted. Webb is the only bona fide guy draft guy and we drafted him in 2014!!
Well, it was a quick loss.
First completed game of the season, Giants have the worst record in MLB.
Hopefully not a harbinger of things to come. Speaking of harbingers, when is Hani*er supposed to be ready?
2:45 game time?
2:33
To whom is the pitch clock visible?
This is gonna be just like 2021. Anemic atttendance unless and until the team starts winning.
I got $18 seats 15 rows behind home plate that season early on. Likely about 15,000 filled seats.
32 strikeouts for both teams. Wow!
zzz . . .
shutout. Come on, this doesn’t surprise any of you does it?
Not against Cole Gerrit that’s for sure. He was on fire, though Webb with his 12K’s wasn’t chopped liver besides a couple sinkers that didn’t sink.
But yeah besides Estrada it was a feeble effort by the Giants real suspect hitters..
My 86Ws prediction is optimistic. I just think this looks like another .500 team, but under the new schedule with 12 fewer games against the Dodgers and Pads, its means a handful more wins are possible this season…
But it also means 3 games apiece vs. Astros and Yanks, and whatever the next best AL teams.
True. I’d rather see those teams than more Doghairs and Pads. The AL teams don’t know SF at all, maybe that’s an advantage of sorts. Today, not…
Against Cole? No. Just hope Haniger can provide something. I mean he has to be better than Yaz. I don’t think he makes it to June at this rate.
Oops Gerrit Cole lol, either name forward are backwards he just dominating..
Cole Gerrit pitches in game 2…
Who had the Kings at 250:1 to win the Western conference?
I usually enjoy opening day a lot more than I did today. I hate getting shutout any game but opening day… it’s probably happened before I just don’t remember.
There was nothing enjoyable about it…
i was completely resigned to this happening
lol
