A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Bombs Away!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 4, 2023

Baseball is a weird game, man. I would have bet anything that we were gonna go into Chicago and lay our bats down swiftly and meekly. Nope. Seven bombs. I want Villar to do this so badly, yesterday was a great show for him. Everyone, in fact.

Thinking about Snarkk’s question about Giants and Bart. Based on 2022, lot to be concerned about. He K’s at enormous rate, and the slugging pct. (.360) is equal to that of Wynns.
He had one good month in August and then followed it up with awful Sept/Oct, going 10-58 with 1 HR and ton of K’s. forever in shadow of irreplaceable Posey, and spent most of 2021 in Sac.

Z seems focused on adding power to the lineup, telling Baggs (I think, might have been Kawakami) he feels Giants have potentially number of hitters capable of blasting 30. Fact they have been after Sanchez, a guy who hit lot of HRs in past, says they doubt Bart will ever be able to do that.
Bart predominantly hit 8th or 9th in order last year, and again that’s not type of guy they want. Kap said words to effect they want Bart to take the job and be the guy…dunno if that is supposed to be motivational or what. He also said back injury isn’t long term thing but there was also noise last season about either Webb or Rodon felt better with Wynns. Have to look that up, but Opening Day with Webb-Perez makes you wonder.

Bart’s been on thin ice for a while. They knew it when they drafted Bailey. Trade him for whatever, it’s time to move on

    • snarkk said, on April 4, 2023 at 9:45 am

If Bart flames out of the organization, and it looks very possible, that’s a huge draft miss. It’s on SabEvans, Bart was in their last draft class. Bart isn’t Farhan’s guy, that’s a big factor against more patience with Bart. Following Buster is not the easiest thing, either. Missing badly on overall #2 in baseball isn’t as bad as NFL or NBA (hello Wiseman), but it’s pretty bad. I can’t believe they drafted Bailey and have all these other catchers without even back then having in mind dealing Bart eventually. Too bad, reports are he’s a good kid and works at it, he just can’t get the bat going at the MLB level.

Baggs few days ago in Athletic: “…the high likelihood is that Sanchez will be on Giants roster soon.” Also in different column: “…Bart will miss enough time that it will be easy for the Giants to option him to Triple A Sacramento as a way to ‘ramp him back up.’ Thought was focus would be on contact and catching skills, with Sanchez taking over majority of the catching for Giants.

Sanchez has to be on the roster by May 1st cause he signed an opt out deadline, so he will get recalled for sure. The interesting one is Sabol, who is a Rule 5 pickup that has to stay up with the Giants all year, are goes back to the Pirates for 50K.

Blocking pitches in the dirt is Sanchez’s biggest defensive weakness.
Don’t know if it’s technique or laziness.
The solution is not to throw any.
There are ways to get a batter to chase something out of the strike zone
without bouncing it 5 feet in front of the plate…

Sanchez and Hjelle oughta be a fun combo.

Not to be lost amongst the barrage of seven home runs yesterday was the strong outing by DeSclafani. We need DeSclafani to resemble 2021 form to shore up shaky starting rotation.

“my idea, and to be honest I still don’t know the problem, would be to just create a new acct/user name”

Yeah, that’s what I had to do several years ago and went from being zumie to zumiee, with the extra e.

I doubt we could get much of anything for Bart. Maybe he can accept the fact he’s more of a backup than starter. If he can keep a good attitude maybe more time is what he needs.

  7. xoot said, on April 4, 2023 at 2:38 pm

Bart and Ramos both should’ve been traded over the winter before their market value dropped even further. Maybe there were no takers. Hard to imagine any now.

Bart’s April 2022 was fairly good, also. He looked like the real deal the first couple of weeks. Strange.

  8. sandog said, on April 4, 2023 at 3:36 pm

I think its too early to pull the plug on Bart or fuck with his head bringing in these 35 year old retreads. Bart doesn’t even have 400 AB’s in the bigs. 11 bombs last year in under 300 AB’s ain’t bad. I hope they give him a good shot this year and let him work through some stuff, but it doesn’t look to be shaping up that way.
I rememberwhen the Padres had Rizzo and he looked awful, like a total bust. So they traded him on the cheap.

    • alleykat69 said, on April 4, 2023 at 4:08 pm

Yeah I’m with you San Dog there is now way the Giants can give up on Bart at his age and still untapped potential imo.He needs to play even if Kap/Morocco Mole can’t swallow they’re pride to use him.U have a mess at Catcher’s position soon when Sanchez joins they’re no way u keep 4 catchers?

    • unca_chuck said, on April 4, 2023 at 4:15 pm

Play him or trade him. This jerking back and forth is dumb.

  9. mrsprtdude said, on April 4, 2023 at 3:45 pm

100%. Too early to give up on hime

  10. snarkk said, on April 4, 2023 at 4:00 pm

Bart isn’t a Farhan draft pick.
IMO that’s an important fact in his future with the Giants. It probably shouldn’t be, but that’s often relevant with GMs in all the major US pro sports…

  11. Flavor said, on April 4, 2023 at 4:22 pm

Bart is 26, no spring chicken anymore, not in terms of being a legit prospect. The Giants aren’t idiots, if they don’t think this guy is gonna get it then ditch him (and as a Sabean pick it should be easy to do)

    • snarkk said, on April 4, 2023 at 4:49 pm

Yeah, agreed. I don’t understand why the Giants seem unable to draft position players that become MLB ready by age 22-24. Catcher may take longer, but still. By 26, you should either be a real MLB player or a pretender. Schmitt is 24, hit the crap outta the ball in ST, and his glove is clearly legit. They should find a place for him on the 26. Other teams seem to be able to place young MLBers on their 26 with alacrity. Doghairs, Cards, Yanks, etc.

Another Bryan Reynolds bomb just now. Goddamn it sucks we didn’t get to keep him

  13. willedav said, on April 4, 2023 at 5:11 pm

You guys see Machado highlight? He was messing with his batting gloves, asked Ump for time which wasn’t granted because he was already past 8 second time limit. Then Ump called the violation resulting in strike 3 and after the argument ejected him in first inning. AZ overcame 5-1 deficit to beat Pads 8-6.
saw this happen to A’s last night as well, hitter getting K’d by Ump on clock violation. wild game they lost in 10 to Guardians (my second fav team) 12-11. Jeez the A’s got zapped by Angels twice over weekend, score 11 including tying 2 HR in 9th off Clevelandc closer, and still lose.

    • xoot said, on April 4, 2023 at 5:25 pm

Didn’t see it, saw headlines about it. So far, I’m all in. The clock applies evenly. Pace is so much better. I even accepted it as Doval got dinged the other day. Only increased the drama if the moment.

Btw, anyone else hear that the DP ball that Crawford managed to handle at the end of that game was hit 115 mph? I’m sure that’s what knk said before the next game. What an ending.

      • willedav said, on April 4, 2023 at 6:26 pm

Yeah I saw that exact stat on cbs site. Wade made nice save on Estrada throw too. He’s looking better over at 1b, with glove at least.

      • xoot said, on April 4, 2023 at 6:30 pm

Re Wade: yeah. Much better than I feared.

  14. willedav said, on April 4, 2023 at 5:21 pm

Great interview btw Melissa Lockerd and farm director kyle Haines. Raved about Casey Schmitt coming to Sac and said something that might also apply to Ramos. He didn’t want Schmitt to think that by spending time in ML camp before being sent down to AAA he’s automatically gonna be called back up–needs to stay focused and locked in and not let stats slide. Ramos is only 23 and he said they’ve worked on his swing all winter, which he spent in AZ instead of playing ball in Puerto Rico. He did say Giants believe promotions better served one level at a time, fwiw.

Luciano is in extended ST and recovering, not yet ready to play field and go to Richmond, which should be loaded with prospects, including Matos and pitching.

Hearing some disgruntled vendors griping about concession sales dropping 🍺🍺🍺 due to quicker games and some vet pitchers experiencing early exhaustion with the quick pace. I think there might be some slight adjustments and tweaks to the new rules at some point…

As Scherzer gives up 3 straight 💣💣💣

    • xoot said, on April 4, 2023 at 6:22 pm

      move cutoff to eighth inning

  16. Macdog said, on April 4, 2023 at 6:04 pm

Brew Crew with a Giants-like inning off Scherzer, 3 straight bombs in the 6th.

  17. djloo27 said, on April 4, 2023 at 6:08 pm

    Scherzer could be toast.
    Good…

Warriors vs. OKC game tonight might end 140-138. Gonna be lot of guys toasted tonight. Can’t anybody play D in this game?

When the Giants lose I’m not thrilled but I have tempered expectations. Warriors this year the hardest team ever to root for. They can’t stop playing like shit with no defense when it matters. 79 at half at home in a must win game?? WTF!!!
