A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

“Baseball’s Weird”

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 12, 2023

And, there ya go. Get destroyed on Monday? No problem. We’ll just shut them out on Tuesday.

We continue to display all the hallmarks of a .500 team. Which isn’t the end of the world, by the way. If Zaidi has the green light at the deadline and he makes a few moves…..

Who knows? But Webb must cease and desist with his bed shitting…..

I still can’t believe they’re doing these City Connect unis. People say, “it’s marketing they wouldn’t do it otherwise.” Well in 3 years or whatever it’s been I’ve never seen a single person, anywhere, wearing a City Connect uni.

The old Hunter Thompson quote comes to mind, “Buy the ticket, take the ride”.

Good game last night, less Ks and well pitched.

Shutting out Dogs always cool, especially Tyler Rogers K of Muncy. Hope pitching holds up.
Meanwhile 169 runs scored in 15 games last night. 13 teams scored at least 7, 2 of whom lost. 12-8 game and 14-9 game, neither of them at Coors where Cards won 9-6.

  3. willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:33 am

Yes as senor locojuan said, only 7 Ks from SF last night. J D Davis talked in Athletic about calling his allotted time out as soon as he got to plate and slowing things down for hitters as a whole, something Villar acknowledged as he broke maiden for HR at the O. Baggs mentioned this was Barry Bonds approach, taking his time getting up to the plate but staying in the box entire AB.

Pitching held top 4 in Dogs order to 1-14. Freeman 0-5 with 3 Ks. Night before they were 9-17 with 3 bombs.

The lowest aggregate strikeout rates in the ’60s (5.18) were higher than the highest in the ’50s (5.09) The highest rates in the ’70s and ’80s (5.96) fall short of the lowest rates of the 2000s (6.30). In 2018, the average number of strikeouts per nine innings is 8.6, which is more than two full strikeouts higher.

So John is right, but still that’s pathetic.

  5. James said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:04 am

One of two things will be true: either SF continues to hit and pitch as well as they have through 11 games and they finish with 85-95 wins (4th in OPS, 2nd in HRs, 5th in ERA) or their relative numbers start to drop and they become the 500 or worse team most expect.

Dovall has to figure out how to pitch with this pitch clock.
After a full spring training, he isn’t used to it yet…

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:34 am

Snarkk–was just able to read your response to me about living in Washington. Sounds similar to my dad who took a few months to get used to Medford. Love how you ended your comment, so true.

Yesterday we played one of the best games we’ve played so far. And I missed it. I am a firm believer in the baseball Gods and jinxes. I may have to miss some more games.

18-6 record in the ice cream suits is why they still wear them.I personally wouldn’t be caught be caught dead wearing those hideous jerseys anywhere..

  9. xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 10:38 am

The pitch clock has changed the 9th inning. Dramatic drawn-out ABs are gone. Pro football still has its 2 min warning and stockpiled TOs; basketball, the TOs and timely fouls. Nothing slows down the new baseball clock. Maybe mgrs need to use mound visits more.

Last night, Doval got dinged by the clock once and came close again, 3-2, to Freeman as he tried to talk to Sabol via the pitchcom. (With a good lead, another walk wouldn’t’ve been fatal, but Doval’s pitch count was getting up there. He ended with 22 for the IP.) I couldn’t tell who, Doval or Sabol, called the low slider after all those high FBs, but they got the great pitch over just in time to whiff a dangerous hitter. So, we had some drama, but it seemed rushed.

    • snarkk said, on April 12, 2023 at 11:19 am

I would be for a little course correction to allow the pitch clock to go from 15 to 20 on all pitches in the 9th…

      • xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 11:25 am

Or thereafter. Although the ghastly ghost runner sort of imports twenty seconds.

  10. Locojuan said, on April 12, 2023 at 11:30 am

Might be a good day for Craw to sit. Opie-wan owns him.

  11. unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2023 at 11:30 am

Actually, the hats are kinda OK. Can’t really tell what color they are. They don’t look orange. Or at least they don’t look like the orange they use regularly.

My son lost my 20 year old regular black hat so I need a replacement. And I lost the hat I found in a Giants bag 45 minutes after a game in like 1977. It was a 7-3/4 (1/8 too big for my fat head but not Bochy-esque) and that Dale Murphy bat. The bag disintegrated in the 90s. The hat had the pro-style grey underbrim. Still have the bat.

  12. unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2023 at 1:58 pm

Wow. In talking to my brother about our uncle passing, he said “I have something of yours I just found.” So he mailed me this program from 1973 when we saw the Mets play the Astros some time in July I think.

Based on my catholic school cursive writing, it looks like the Mets won 2-1 in 12 innings. mays pinch hit and played center. He got a base hit. What a trip. The thing that immediately blew me away was seeing my son’s name at the top of the Mets lineup card.

    Mets-1

    Mets-2

    Mets-3

Ruf on his way to SF

    • djloo27 said, on April 12, 2023 at 3:43 pm

      And in the lineup…

      1. Thairo Estrada (R) SS
      2. Wilmer Flores (R) 1B
      3. Michael Conforto (L) 3B
      4. J.D. Davis (R) RF
      5. Darin Ruf (R) DH
      6. David Villar (R) 2B
      7. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
      8. Joey Bart (R) C
      9. Heliot Ramos (R) LF

      P: Alex Cobb (R)

      • Flavor said, on April 12, 2023 at 3:46 pm

That is the shittiest looking line up. No one to fear.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2023 at 4:39 pm

        All about the pitching.

      • Locojuan said, on April 12, 2023 at 4:40 pm

What’s the over/under on how long Ruf stays on the 26?

      • willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 4:47 pm

Read somewhere (I think on mlb.com) Slater and Haniger will not be activated as orginally thought on the 6 game road trip that starts Friday so Kap short RH bats.
after day off tomorrow, 14 straight with last 8 hosting Cards and Mets.

  16. sandog said, on April 12, 2023 at 5:36 pm

I think Ruf ain’t going nowhere. He was solid for us and Zaidi loves him.
At the game the other day I told Flav my over/under HR total for him this year is 8.5.
Flav thought was way too high.

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2023 at 6:11 pm

I think I said he’d hit 1. Maybe that 1 is tonight. To be honest this convo is not rushing back to me. I know we had it. Can’t remember everything right? You were bullish on Ruf I remember that.

  17. alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2023 at 6:01 pm

Just bringing Ruf back is the norm for this desperate organization, they just can’t help themselves bringing back the retreads. Can’t this team ever move forward with a prospect are 2?

    • Flavor said, on April 12, 2023 at 6:12 pm

he is a guy who could play a role on a certain team. I feel like we have several Ruf’s right now tho. He’s just not a necessary piece and Zaidi is playing the role of an unserious GM right now.

  18. mrsprtdude said, on April 12, 2023 at 6:24 pm

Why is Conforto at 3rd and Gavis in left???

    • djloo27 said, on April 12, 2023 at 6:56 pm

It was an early misprint from the line-up website.
      They corrected it since.
JD at 3rd, MC in RF, Helium in left…

  19. mrsprtdude said, on April 12, 2023 at 6:26 pm

Ruf in our starting lineup piss’s me off to no end.

  20. willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 6:59 pm

Ruf is DH, so what? Ramos LF Yaz in CF Conforto in RF.
Johnson is 3-20 with 0 BBs and 9Ks. He can watch and come in as D replacement or PR for a real hitter who can actually get on base.

  21. xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:00 pm

Any team with Ruf on the 26 is not trying to contend.

  22. djloo27 said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:04 pm

Ruf left NY like a bit of a crybaby…

    • xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:09 pm

Well he’ll get some hits here before he’s gone again.

    • willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Yes. Not his fault Cohen’s GM overpaid for him. Personal vitriol he got on talk radio/social media not a good look for Mets fans.

  23. willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:06 pm

    Case closed right there.

    • xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:13 pm

No. Ruf’s s stiff. If that’s the best you can do you’re not the best.

  24. djloo27 said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:07 pm

    EX-METS!!!

    • willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:13 pm

Might be story in itself, no? Lot of them sure seem to thrive elsewhere…hmmnn

  25. xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:27 pm

Opening day last year, watching from seats above 3B, no one roared louder than I did as Ruf chugged from first to score the walkoff run. The guy has a great heart but not a great talent. He’s like a backup Wilmer who’s already a DH/backup.

    • willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:48 pm

Had 2 very good years here 2020 and 2021 and hit 21 HRs, with .960 OPS vs. LHP. Sucked last season, certainly. Not here to play OF, mostly DH and maybe add some pop to lineup while other RHs are hurt.

      • xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:00 pm

Well at least he’s not playing D –yet.

  26. djloo27 said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:28 pm

Amazed that Bart tagged and went to 3rd on Thairo’s liner to Mookie.
    Wil-x-met!

    • xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:42 pm

Bart’s trying to stay on the team. He has a great arm and he runs well for a catcher. Sabol, maybe his arms not that good. Neither can hit much, so far. It’s like delayed ST.

  27. xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:49 pm

Bart has a major league arm.

  28. Macdog said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:50 pm

    He’s out, man.

  29. alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:50 pm

Right call Bart nailed the runner so he’s Outman!

  30. unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:51 pm

Why is Conforto out of the game? Left for 1/2 an inning and he’s out for a defensive replacement? Are you fucking kidding me? In the 4th inning? As Johnson misses a deep shot?

    • willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:55 pm

Exactly. Nothing from KnK on whether he tweaked something. Twitter from beat writers?

  31. alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2023 at 7:54 pm

Krukow doing his usual boner rise for Bart on his defense. It’s his offense I want to rise too!

  37. xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:05 pm

Johnson was determined to make that catch. Man.

  38. unca_chuck said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:05 pm

Conforto’s hurt? And now Johnson. Do we have a little league training staff? Baseball isn’t that fucking hard.

    • willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:06 pm

Nothing from anyone on twitter–slush pavs maria guardado–except that he left the game.

  39. alleykat69 said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:05 pm

Johnson made up for Conforto missing on that tremendous catch Chuck!! Unfortunately we will need a couple outfielders again..

    • willedav said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:46 pm

  43. xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 8:46 pm

This roster came half baked out of ST. It was assembled abstractly and never tested.

  49. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:08 pm

I generally thought the pitching staff was in pretty good shape coming into the season, both starters and relievers. But if the starters can’t go deep (Wood removed in 5th yesterday, Cobb in 4th today), then they’re going to need a couple of stellar middle relievers to hold down the fort…

    • xoot said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:13 pm

You see Stripling just now? This team has no depth. Apparently it was designed that way so Zaidi could improvise during the season.

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:15 pm

I was indeed wondering why Stripling was in. By design (moved from rotation to pen?) or as you say, lack of depth…. I dunno.

      • djloo27 said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:19 pm

I think they used to call it “mop up” but they had to stop because several mops were offended…

      • Locojuan said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:26 pm

They ran out of outfielders to pitch, they had to use Stripling.

  51. mrsprtdude said, on April 12, 2023 at 9:58 pm

Watched the game with my buddy Greg. Freeman at bat a killer. We were saying no way can he not keep throwing sliders because he can”t get FB over and 14 sliders in a row. Next pitch fastball for a ball 4. game over. We had CK on the ropes and let him off. FUCK!
