A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Defining The Worst Loss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 15, 2023

I still say last Saturday was the worst loss of the season. I know we have the recency bias to support yesterday’s game as the worst. Still, I had to watch last Sat live and yesterday didn’t even get to see it because of stupid Apple tv. The radio was bad but not as bad as having to watch it. I re-watched the Maton Bomb at mlb.com. It was horrific as expected.

I dunno. What do you guys think? Which was the worse loss?

Last night to me is worse primarily because Gabe Kapler is a fucking moronic boob. Regardless of what others think. 3-0 pitch I am watching it live and every god damn person at the stadium knows Doval is about to groove one to get a fastball strike and the god damn hitter is waiting on it. Even if it is not a three run crush a solid base hit probably wins it right there. Any old school manager is making sure if not intentionally putting the hitter on an open first base, then maybe throw something out of the strike zone to see if he will swing at a bad pitch.

The one thing that is inarguable is that putting another runner on first does not hurt because the runner is meaningless. Plus there were two outs so start a fresh count with the next hitter….

    • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 7:14 am

      Who called the pitch?

      • Giant Head said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:37 am

That is the problem, Kapler has to be able to relay that hell fucking no put the god damned runner on base instead of throwing a 3-0 meatball period….

    • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 7:45 am

      Kapler isn’t catching or pitching.

      • willedav said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:13 am

Exactly. Who called pitch is something, but ultimately ball was in Doval’s hand He had finished off Tigers in 7 pitches inning before and he was 6th guy being used on first game of 14 straight without day off. He’s closer with a one run lead going in–who would you pull him for?

Happened to Bochy and every other mgr. too–you bring in guy you want and he implodes. Couple more day games in Detroit, time to get back after it.

      • Giant Head said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:40 am

Roger Craig had a complete grasp on his pitching staff and such an obvious moment as 3-0 winning runner on 2nd 1st base open, Craig is not letting his pitcher throw the fucking ball game away. Kapler has zero sense of wait it is to manage a pitching staff and pen and those mistakes has been bloody consistent since he has managed. He is a buffed out dumb jock with no brain power who relies on Farhan and all analytics. no feel for the game as a manager…we will never win a world series with him. Phillies figured that out right quick with him..

  2. zumiee said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:20 am

As an entire division, the NL West has underwhelmed so far.

  3. willedav said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:21 am

Funky as last season was, Giants pitchers were very good at limiting walks and bombs. This season they are 12th NL for bombs allowed, though second best at walks and Ks.
And yes Doval has not had command of pitches so far.

  4. Flavor said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:27 am

Webb and Doval have been terrible. If that keeps up .500 would be a dream scenario, likely much worse

    • Giant Head said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:41 am

which I forgot to raise yday the Webb extension…seemed way premature to me with two years left on his rookie deal. Thoughts?

      • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:47 am

They have to build a staff another way than these one-and-an opt-out deals.

  5. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:45 am

    And Stripling.

  6. Flavor said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:06 am

if you have 4 min this is quite a story. The A’s are a joke. This is something that I imagined could happen at Evans Diamond in Berkeley but not at a mlb stadium

  7. Flavor said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:07 am

regarding Webb, i am confident in him. I think he just has to adjust because the hitters have adjusted and what he was throwing before isn’t working cause they’re laying off it. Throw more 4 seamers up and that’ll keep them honest

    • willedav said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:22 am

High hard one best antidote to juiced ball/launch angle, right?

  8. zumiee said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:09 am

I’m hoping the Kings can give the Warriors a competitive series. There are lots of good reasons the Warriors are the favored team. The Kings would have to play their best ball and catch a few breaks, and hope the Warriors have some off games.

    • willedav said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:27 am

mm not gonna be easy Zum with Warriors just about at their healthiest. Road D issues of GS should improve noticeably over regular season, and as long as they take care of ball and make Kings work defensively they will be tough to beat. Hope Kings can take a couple games though and keep things interesting, especially at home. Should be great atmosphere in Sac and they’ve been fun to watch all year.

  9. Flavor said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:31 am

fuckin Beaty is back and starting lol

  10. Winder said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:48 am

I think both those games were the worst. Worse is a subjective term(imo) and the outcomes stunk so bad it’s hard to tell.

  11. Greg said, on April 15, 2023 at 9:52 am

Appreciate this blog and comments thread! Joc is out, so Beaty is back. BS! I say no to more Dodger retreads!!! Farhan thinks he is smarter than the dudes who trained him? Ha…ha…
I’m ok giving younger players PT in AAA, find some other 26 man roster fringe player to bring in. No fringe Dodgers! We have to draw a line somewhere.

That LU card has a .500 season, maybe worse, written all over it…

    • snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 10:50 am

That shouldn’t be the LU card on a team that’s the 5th most valuable in MLB…

  13. mrsprtdude said, on April 15, 2023 at 10:27 am

Rethinking my thoughts from last night. Sadly Doval is the issue. We can’t intentionally walk the bases full with a pitcher who can’t get the ball over the plate. Dovals wildness isn’t on Kapler. He is in trouble constantly because of all the walks. As Dusty told my dad years ago…What would you do differently? I have to play the guys I have. And kapler didn’t throw to the wrong base either…If the players do their job the right way we win.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 11:43 am

Well, in that situation the runner at 1st is meaningless. They should have walked him but that’s on the battery.

  14. djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 10:48 am

The funny thing is that J.D. Davis is exactly what the Mets need…

  15. djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 10:51 am

Whoever this announcing team is for the Giants doesn’t know Verlander is out indefinitely…

    • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 11:02 am

      Flemm & Javy…

  16. blade3colorado said, on April 15, 2023 at 10:56 am

Glad you rethought your response mrsprtdude, i.e., I agree. Kapler even roasted Villar after the game (in a nice way) by saying . . . “He thought the ball was taking him toward third base so he had a chance to make the play,” Kapler said. “But that’s a play you rarely see made — it isn’t even one we practice. You have to take the out at first.”

Regarding Doval, that was a bone head decision selecting the fastball, as Maton had a hitter’s count and was sitting on Doval’s fastball. Pfffttt!

    • Winder said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:15 pm

It was also right down the middle a little high but a perfect pitch to hit.

  17. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 11:35 am

    5th inning blues yet again.

  18. Macdog said, on April 15, 2023 at 11:35 am

    • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:02 pm

      Can you repeat that?

  23. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:22 pm

Fuck me silly. We SUCK!!!!! I really thought we had settled the pen.

    NOPE!!!

Today’s loss will be the worst.

Go Dubs! This fucking season looks like a disaster in the making.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:29 pm

Then again, the D that was worrisome is really awful.

Blew a 5 run lead to the bottom-feeder Tigers. After blowing a 4 run lead earlier.

Fuck Hjelle. Fuck Brebbia. Fuck Stripling. Getting sick of this same old same old. Hjelle’s gonna give up the lead.

      Crawfish got one!

  24. djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:25 pm

Truly fuckin pathetic for a major leaguer…

  25. Macdog said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:26 pm

    And now here comes Hjelle.

  27. alleykat69 said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:38 pm

This team is trash 🗑️ u know there losing in the bottom of the 9th right?

  28. snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:41 pm

So, I thought pitching was supposed to be a strong suit of this team?
BTW, do we now have part time radio announcers?
Listening to FP Santangelo for any length of time leads to brain damage…

  29. djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:45 pm

I kinda like the old school dirt runway from HP to the mound, but aren’t there rules about that?
Can you just construct your infield however you want up to a point?

    • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:50 pm

I think they still have that in Arizona and I remember it in Wrigley Field way back.
I’m sure everyone is enthralled with this topic…

      • xoot said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:57 pm

The Jake in Cleveland when it first opened.

  31. mrsprtdude said, on April 15, 2023 at 12:59 pm

Brebia is bad but we run him out there every game. Augh
Only a few weeks in and rooting for this team is maddening

  33. snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:08 pm

By June, how many guys on this Giants 26-man roster will be gone due to non-injury moves by management? Half a dozen?

  34. snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:10 pm

Ramos needs to do something here…

    • snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:11 pm

      Pop up wasn’t it.
This guy was hyped so long by the Giants, and like most of the farmhands that get up here for a look, it’s phtttttt…

  35. alleykat69 said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:12 pm

I can’t stand the freaking term “You can turn the order over” Who fucking cares if u can’t get it done when you do ..

  36. snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:14 pm

Kapp just blew his wad, basically nobody left to PH.
Not looking good to win this one…

    • snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:18 pm

      Yep, that was fast.
After the wild pitch, why not walk the bags loaded and have the force at home in order for out #1, then hope for a DP ball on next batter? Isn’t that better than still pitching to Cabrera even w/him at 0-2 ? Not like he’s a HOFer or anything…

      • djloo27 said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:21 pm

        💯💯💯
I think they just gave up…

      • snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:25 pm

        Sadly, you may be right…

      • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:29 pm

Might as well because those runs don’t mean anything. But our relievers walk so many guys . . .

  42. snarkk said, on April 15, 2023 at 1:22 pm

Hope the Gyros really are not this bad for the season, but this roster and the pitching looks bad right now. One of the worst in MLB. Gotta right the ship so they’re not out of WC contention by first week of May…

    • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 7:40 pm

    • unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 6:24 pm

I was almost a Kings fan back then as I was so fucking sick of Chris Cohan and his abject ineptitude. And we were in Roseville and a couple players lived nearby. . . Caught a few games back in the Stoyakovitch, Bibby, Bobby Jackson days.

  45. zumiee said, on April 15, 2023 at 3:08 pm

Tongue in cheek..Craig asking us to rate which lose was the worst put it out there we needed a 3rd choice!

  49. Flavor said, on April 15, 2023 at 5:31 pm

Today was the worst of the 3. All their losses suck. They suck.

  50. xoot said, on April 15, 2023 at 5:57 pm

Sabol’s not much of an OF, but, the injuries. Bart’s hitting some singles. The catcher competition couldn’t be much more disheartening. SP is great, for a few innings per game, and the pen’s thin–the few good arms there are already overworked. Crawford’s on pace to commit about 40 errors, assuming he takes a day off now and again. Of course, we have no backup SS. Villar and JD can both play 3B and that’s it. Etc. Thairo? Right. This team is a mess. Who the fuck engineered this roster?

  51. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 6:10 pm

Well, you keep picking up 28+ guys, you run the risk of these guys getting hurt all the fucking time. I don’t know. This is pretty much an indictment of the 5 years of drafts that have produced Villar and . . . . . Hjelle? Bryce Johnson?

  52. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 6:18 pm

Dubs just have to stay close. I think they’ll pull away in the end.

  59. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:11 pm

More of the same. Stupid ball.

  60. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:21 pm

It really bugs me when we just starting gunning and missing. The kings got to the line the last 6 minutes of the game and got a boatload of free points. The Dubs didn’t even drive at all the last 6 minutes.

  61. unca_chuck said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:21 pm

Well, we’ll take 4 of the next 5.

  62. Macdog said, on April 15, 2023 at 8:23 pm

The Warriors were in the bonus with 8:45 left in the 4th. We should have been attacking the rim but instead went with missing 3s down the stretch. The Kings drove and got a ton of free throws.
