A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

On Our Way Back Home

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 20, 2023

I don’t even want to think about what our mood would have been if they had lost that game. Luckily they won and I don’t have to think about it. Now, The Mets.

Really excited for the Warriors game tonight. Couldn’t really build up more intrigue into a Game 3 first round game if you tried to.

I don’t know if you guys can appreciate how exciting it was for me to actually see the Giants on TV as a kid. 18 games a year vs. Mets before getting reduced to 12 in 1969 and the occasional game of the week. Everything else was just box scores accompanied by a one or two line recap in the paper and a lot of the time the west coast scores weren’t even in the morning papers. I could also pick up the Phillies games on the radio fairly well but much better late at night. Couldn’t wait for the Sporting News to come in the mail on Friday to read the weekly Giant article. That was about it. Feels like 30 lifetimes ago.
    Highly recommend ditching Wordle.
    It’s like being paroled…

I only go back to the 12 games per season, and if memory is correct, not every game was televised on Channel 9. So yeah, it was a rare treat getting a chance to watch the Giants. Also did the Phillies on radio, occasionally Pittsburgh on KDKA. I guess it was sometime in the 80s when most if not all Mets games were televised thanks to cable, probably on Sportschannel.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:38 am

The Giants were barely on TV here back in the day.

SF will be packed all day&night with a trifecta of party events!
It’s 4/20 reefer day as well at Hippie Park as the stoners will come out in force lighting up the best pot available as they’ve blaring Hendrix,Dead,Joplin,Starship,Ten Years After,Led Zeppelin,CSNY etc etc..

Giants Baseball ⚾️ &Warriors Basketball 🏀 to fill out a busy day by the bay..

    • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:47 am

Dispensaries set up sales kiosks for the event now, don’t they? Parking is a bitch, though.

  3. willedav said, on April 20, 2023 at 7:36 am

Giants weren’t on TV much themselves here in Bay Area 60s, except vs. LA. Channel 2 with Gary Suntan Park.

    • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:50 am

“I’ve waited so fucking long for this!” screamed young Will Clark into Gary Park’s live mic. Exit Park from channel 2. I remember seeing him a couple of times at a restaurant on College Ave in Oakland. His open desire to be recognized and approached was pathetic.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:17 pm

        His rookie year!

      • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:51 pm

No. It was the next year, champagne flowing. Still, what a dick. But Park walked into it.

The 2 weirdest things I can remember about televised games from Candlestick
    at least in the 60’s:
A lot of the game was shown on a camera positioned behind third base (WTF?)
about halfway up and the PA announcer was almost impossible to understand…

    • willedav said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:33 am

Guy they had for long time had very deep voice, Jeff Carter iirc. Midway through the game he’d announce the attendance and add “And we thank you.” And I did hear him announce the Pirate great as “Bob” Clemente.

    Oklnd ==> lAs vegAs

Remember when Mays and Mantle got punished in retirement because they took lowly PR gigs in vegas? Everything changed after Bart Giamatti had his heart attack and the owners staged their coup. Selig, strike, roids, interleague, uni DH. Gambling’s probably going to be a boon.

    • Macdog said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:41 am

I think the casinos Mays and Mantle were involved with were in Atlantic City, yes, harmless PR gigs that nonetheless drew the ire of idiot Bowie Kuhn.

      • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:51 am

Did Atlantic City have casinos back then? Don’t think so.

      • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:18 am

You’re right. The brand new AC casinos hired them.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:46 am

They were banned from the game. Thought is was Vegas, but such a joke.

  6. unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:42 am

Still pissed the league decided to suspend Draymond for a game. Nothing like fucking up a perfectly good series. And Sabonis for all his dirty play doesn’t get anything for instigating shit. I hope he does have to sit out the game. Just like Lady Bird James back in 2016.

The NBA is sofa king soft. Barkley gets a flagrant for a similar action and isn’t even tossed.

  7. djloo27 said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:43 am

The arguments I would get into over those two…

    • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 8:54 am

Everyone argued over it. Mantle really was good. Just not that good. If his steel cleat hadn’t stuck in that sprinkler head when he was young, the comparison might have turned out to be more even.

      • djloo27 said, on April 20, 2023 at 1:07 pm

Xoot, even a Mays lunatic like me thinks you’re shortchanging the Mick.
Take away the sprinkler and the booze and he might’ve been every bit as good as our guy.
        But who knows?

      • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 3:50 pm

Well, the osteomyelitis played a part, too. Don’t get me wrong. As a kid I revered the guy. One of the few stars I saw on tv regularly. Guy I worked with, a NY baseball fanatic who wound up on jeopardy couple years back, agreed with me one morning that Buster’s HR swing the night before looked just like Mantle from the right side. Thing of beauty. That happened occasionally.

One of my all time favorite musical heroes was born on this day 4/20 100 years ago, Tito Puente. Got rolling in 50s Mambo era NYC with famous Dancemania recording. Saw him number of times out here on left coast, with great small 6=7 man groups on vibes and timbal and once with 17 piece big band, real treat.

    • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:07 am

Good choice for today. I just realized recently that my decades old Sonos system includes unlimited access to Spotify. Now that’s a library. A few artists abjure–Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, CSN–but just about everyone else is available. Lately, I’ve been listening to Ethiopian jazz from late 60s early 70s. Got tipped to it by the tv show Poker Face’s soundtrack. Coincidentally, piece in New Yorker just last week about its most famous piano player, a solo nun. Sax player Tesfa-maryam Kidane got some well deserved int’l notice for his tune Hewete.

  9. Flavor said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:21 am

most, but not all of us, called this sad demise for Bum.

    • snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:45 am

Yep, there was a ton of mileage on that arm in his last year with the Gyros. Farhan blew it when he did not trade Bum mid-season for some prospects. At least he was smart enough not to resign him.
Dbacks just ate $34 million on that DFA. Ouch…

      • willedav said, on April 20, 2023 at 10:12 am

Ah I think that belies the idea Z is out of touch with fanbase. That was Bochy’s last season and Z’s first. Pulling the rug out from under him by trading away Bum and Wil Smith as brand new guy in charge while they were technically still in it would have enraged locals something fierce. Better baseball move in long term to have traded them, OK though we’ll never know who offered whom. Short term I get it, letting Bochy ride off into the sunset with his guys.
Not to mention, the comp picks from QO they got turned into Kyle Harrison.

      • snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 10:22 am

Sabes traded Matt Williams, caught a lot of crap, but it was the right move. Arguably, that was even gutsier, Matt was in the middle of his career, Bum was clearly on the downside.
Moves like that are why the GM makes the big bucks…

  10. unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:52 am

Yeah, that was definitely a bridge I’m glad we didn’t cross with Bummie. I’d love him as our bench coach instead of mini-me, though.

Like Cain before him, Bummie had a million miles on that arm when deal time came up.

    • snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:59 am

      Kapp and Bum?

      Oil and Vinegar?
      Water and Fire?
      Yin and Yang?
      Cats and Dogs?
      Spock and Kirk?
      Sugar and Salt?

  11. snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:53 am

I can see Bochy giving Bum a call for a spin at the Rangers AAA team, see if he can spin up some magic …

    • willedav said, on April 20, 2023 at 10:20 am

Sure. Meanwhile Opie went 7 shutout innings the other night. He’s still getting hitters out at age 35 even with diminished velo. 2.52 ERA in 4 starts. 29 innings he’s given 19 hits and 4 walks/26 Ks 3 HRs.
I think if Posey was still around he and Bum might have been able to figure something out.

      • snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 10:24 am

I assume the Dbacks really evaluated the hell outta this move — you don’t burn $34 million without some due diligence. Don’t bring Bum back and end up DFAing him, that would not be cool for his Giants legacy…

  12. alleykat69 said, on April 20, 2023 at 10:01 am

Don’t put it past the Giants to bring Bumgarner back I’m actually banking on it for the minimum 720K,it’s just they’re way,Sandoval,Pence,Ruf just a few examples of loyalty players they always resign for no good reason..

    • snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 10:19 am

The only deal I want Giants to sign with Bum is a one day contract when he retires, ala Romo’s recent sendoff …

      • blade3colorado said, on April 20, 2023 at 11:36 am

Exactly. I see your point about Farhan trading Bum back then, but I have to go with Willie’s points because the Giants still were in the race and more important, it really would have rocked the Bochy, Sabean, bore core, etc., “boat” had he done so. Clean slate the next season. Additionally, just me, but Sabean didn’t know Williams from Jack, as he was a Rosen guy.

By the by, thank you very much Tom for the advice you gave me regarding an attorney, related to my daughter. Much appreciated!

      • snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 12:21 pm

Loo– I can’t stop doing wordle. Not until all my friends stop and then that stops them from sending me the puzzle graph. It’s too much of a challenge to not play every day

  14. blade3colorado said, on April 20, 2023 at 11:30 am

I try to play with Pawlie daily, but I am lucky to play 1-2 times a week with him. Too busy trading and taking care of my daughter. Equally important, like Loo said – I hate when I get the basic puzzle in 2 or 3, but have to use 3-4 guesses due to similar words, to figure out the specific word. Also, I was getting bored with the game too, until a couple of months ago, my win % dipped to 97% . . . Consequently, I challenged myself to get it back to where it was (98%).

Giants added Tristan Beck, Stanford guy, to pitching staff. Boy talk about one deal 2019 that had fanbase ecstatic (especially here)—it was Z dumping off Melancon at deadline to Braves, who picked up rest of his contract and gave them Tristan Beck, who unfortunately has had some injury problems.

  19. blade3colorado said, on April 20, 2023 at 1:42 pm

Agree about him not being much better or worse than some of our guys. However, it just feels like “rubbernecking” an auto accident, i.e., morbid curiousity to see him crash and burn. I seriously doubt he’s going to change the “script” after 4-5 seasons of going south.

  22. willedav said, on April 20, 2023 at 3:20 pm

Interesting #s if you look at NL B/R leaders columns. Both teams score same amount of runs per game, though Giants have hit 8 more HRs in 2 fewer games. Mets lead NL in walks.
Mets pitchers give up a full run less per game than Giants, though they have allowed more HRs than everyone else except AZ (tied with 28).
warmer weather in Bay Area in general for today and weekend…see if that changes dynamics “pitcher’s weather” of yard.

    • willedav said, on April 20, 2023 at 4:56 pm

mets have also K’d 57 fewer times than Giants, despite having played 2 more games.
Looks like they only have 2 LHPs on entire staff, one being Peterson SP for Saturday.

  23. snarkk said, on April 20, 2023 at 3:57 pm

The A’s apparently now definitely leaving for Vegas creates a sad day for Bay Area sports. I never cared for them, never was much interested in them, but I didn’t dislike them. I was ambivalent. It’s a shame it came to this, having two teams in the Bay is better than just one. I don’t doubt that if somebody like Lacob owned the A’s he would have found a way to build a new ballpark. The A’s owner is a tool, like Cohan was for the Dubs…

    • unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2023 at 4:42 pm

Sucks for Oakland. At least the Warriors are nearby.

If Reggie, Paul Allen, and Bill Gates went in on the team back in 2005, they would have figured a way to keep them here. I mean, even building a baseball-only stadium where the mausoleum is at would have been fine, a la the Stick rebuild that never happened (thanks Dr. Kedorkian). Still pissed about that.

Good riddance to a lowly predator. Fisher’s prepandemic boondoggle, with two towers taller than any existing building in Oakland, doesn’t pencil out now. Off to more golden sands. And mlb no longer needs interleague diversityor rivalry. It’s all one big DH ghost runner wild card rich streaming prelude to high priced commercials post season. Let the Bay Area be Giant. A’s weren’t making mlb any money here anyway. As a long time Oakland resident, I think we’re better off, too.

  43. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:17 pm

I’ll say it again: Bum is probably better than 2 or 3 of the starters and half of the relievers….. Giants are no nearer to fielding a sustainably relevant team (not to mention one with players we can actually root for) than they were 5 years ago when Z took over. Some of you here love Z-man and spoke about happily accepting a 2 to 3 year wilderness while he worked his magic. Other than Thairo and Davis (and a now locked-up Webb), I don’t see many of these current players being relevant to this team a couple years from now. If constant wilderness is the Z plan, then he’s doing very well. But I’m in a sour mood these days, so nevermind……

    • xoot said, on April 20, 2023 at 9:54 pm

wtf knows what z’s long range plan may be, his short term plans are so distracting. This roster is packed with second rate starters and third string backups. How did geniuses engineer this shit? My son sees 100 losses. He’s usually more optimistic than I am.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 20, 2023 at 10:02 pm

Ouch. I was fairly hopeful. I thought they had at least settled the pitching staff and bullpen. I was worried about the hitting and the defense. Well, the pitching sucks, and the hitting is, well, hit or miss. With a LOT of misses.

We haven’t even played a month and we’ve lost 5 guys to the DL? Our big get Haniger is still nowhere to be seen. Conforto is hurting and we lose a player a game it seems. Crawfish is looking his age, and like Yaz said, the team just looks disinterested.

Kapler has no choice but to play the deck he has, but it is a deck full of jokers and ducks.

I don’t like the White patches on the Mets uniforms. They are a distraction. Not on the same arm for every player. All the Met pitchers had them on their glove arm and facing the batters. While the position players had them on the arm facing the Giants pitcher. A small point but still bugged me.
