A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Whimpering Our Way To Mexico

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 28, 2023

Didn’t see the game. I’m assuming Webb was marginally better than the relievers. But in the end it didn’t matter, we get shut out. Now it’s off the Mexico, no game today. Hmmmmm what to do with no baseball game today? Well I heard their might be a basketball game going on somewhere in SF…….

Padres come in game under .500 at 13-14. As a team they are dead last NL in BA at .215, near bottom for runs per game. Pitching 8-9 for runs against and team ERA.
Not where they nor Dogs 13-13 thought they would be.

Ah yes Kings in rather different position than after first 2 games. Kerr has managed to get more out of his tightened rotation so far. Who beside stars steps up tonight?

    • Flavor said, on April 28, 2023 at 9:15 am

i haven’t looked at the stats but it feels like they’re missing a lot of 3s. Getting Monk going from outside again might get them going as a team

      • unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 11:41 am

The Kings were abysmal shooting 3s in game 5. Then again, so were we.

        Kings 10-34 – 29.4%
        Dubs 11-38 – 28.9%

Difference being, the Kings missed the bulk of their late while we missed a lot of ours early. It’s not how you start but how you finish.

Giants promoted C Bailey to Sac after his hot start in AA Richmond. Giants have today off and another one next Thursday after they leave Houston. Bart supposedly wasn’t hurt that bad, so we’ll see if move for C needs to happen or not. Monday would be deadline for decision on Sanchez.

  3. unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:57 am

Bailey’s in AAA now as well.

  4. James said, on April 28, 2023 at 9:22 am

Webb has been pretty good two consecutive starts, but he’s yet to pitch without giving up a bomb. That has to change, or he’ll torpedo whatever chance the Giants have at playing above 500.

    • Flavor said, on April 28, 2023 at 9:28 am

James what’s your opinion about this leadoff hitter the A’s have? Ruiz? Considering your disdain for the stolen bag you must loath him, yes? I find him to be exciting!

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 10:01 am

Hey, you’ll get no argument from me against zero CS. If the Giants keep up the 17/20 pace, Kapler will deserve manager of the year consideration. An 85% SB success rate — now that’s exciting!

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 10:21 am

You trying to start a Beltran HOF argument, Loo?

      • djloo27 said, on April 28, 2023 at 10:48 am

Nah. Just wasting time – my specialty…

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 11:02 am

I was JK. I love how much better Raines was than Henderson. 4% is not a small gap.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 11:23 am

Not enough to be in the HoF.

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 11:34 am

Raines? If being the second greatest leadoff hitter of all time isn’t enough, I guess so.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 11:35 am

Ooops. Read Baines not Raines. Still pissed off about Santo while Baines cruises in doing nothing particularly well.

  5. alleykat69 said, on April 28, 2023 at 9:29 am

Even though Sanchez is struggling (3-22? ) we all know the Giants will activate him by May1st his opt out date. When have they not given a player a shot? He has to be added to the 40 man roster first then to the 26 man.Dump Beaty, send Beck down works for me..

  6. unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 10:50 am

Why Shitter is even in there baffles me. He’s sucked every outing.

      They dig that Stanford IQ.

Stylish, sensitive, yet binary. Hope he’s the manager for the next 20 years.

    • snarkk said, on April 28, 2023 at 2:33 pm

I’m still trying to figure out if Kappler is legitimately cool, or a poser…

    • xoot said, on April 28, 2023 at 2:51 pm

It’s obvious. He’s a paleo epicure with tasteful tats who tends his tan as scrupulously as he sculpts his physique.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 2:55 pm

        aka: poser

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 3:06 pm

What’s wrong with enjoying your good looks?

      • xoot said, on April 28, 2023 at 3:21 pm

He looks odd without a hat. Like a Hollywood walk on playing a flashy gangster’s silent backup.

    • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 3:02 pm

Don’t know about cool, but I think he’s earnest. He’s got a whole clubhouse full of players with whom he probably doesn’t share many values, but he seems to handle it pretty well.

Anyone see the “hammer” Will Levis was sitting next to during the NFL 1st round draft? Damnnnn! She could put her shoes underneath my bed anytime. Totally better looker than Beebe’s wife, Allie DeBerry. By the by, are they still married? I doubt it if he went over to Japan as I think he did.

    • snarkk said, on April 28, 2023 at 2:38 pm

They have about a 8 month old infant son. Looks like they are still together on the Japan thing, per her twitter. If he gets lit up in Japan, then what? That bust of a 1st rounder really hurt the Giants. At that high a pick, you would hope he’d be by now at least a #4 starter, maybe a #2 or #3. IMO he had the physical tools, but lacked yugely in the mental part of the game…

      • blade3colorado said, on April 28, 2023 at 5:52 pm

Agree. Tell you the truth, he didn’t do himself any favors by marrying a high maintenance woman; not to mention the fact, she was competing indirectly with him for fame and fortune. That being said, apparently they are still together, perhaps because they are “Christians” (although today, I question ALL religions).

    “Kings 10-34 – 29.4%
    Dubs 11-38 – 28.9%”

Ah, the current NBA. Watching teams miss dozens of 3-point shots every game. That’s entertainment!

    • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 12:07 pm

More like every other game. And it is highly entertaining to see the opposition miss in the dozens.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 2:57 pm

Dubs do so much better when they attack the paint. It leads to better shots behind the arc.

    • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 3:28 pm

It’s interesting to look at the team defensive stats:

      https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/opponent-three-point-pct

New Orleans was #1 against the 3, but middle of the pack overall. You can emphasize defending the 3, but you pay for it inside. In general, it doesn’t seem like a good defensive strategy because there’s inherently more randomness in shooting 3’s, since they are more difficult shots. The curve from best to worst 3 point defenses is relatively flat.

      • unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 4:09 pm

It’s a good reason why the Warriors can get a lot of paint points. Teams try to defend the arc against us.

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 5:00 pm

Sure, when that’s the case. But that’s not always what’s happening when the tiresome “they don’t have to settle for 3’s!” Fitz cry invades my living room. Most of the time the Warriors are simply missing open 3s, because, well, it’s just more random shooting from 25+ feet away at a game pace.

  10. Flavor said, on April 28, 2023 at 3:45 pm

just for the hell of it i went back and looked at the rest of the 2011 1st rd after Beede was taken. I’d never heard of any of them except Joe Panik

    • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 4:17 pm

Your chances of finding a good player in the first round of any draft just aren’t that great:

      https://community.fangraphs.com/success-rate-of-mlb-first-round-draft-picks-by-slot/

Of course, it only gets worse after the first round.

      • xoot said, on April 28, 2023 at 5:06 pm

Huston Street a bust? The guy pitched for 13 yrs and finished with a 1.006 whip. He also once struck out Barry Bonds swinging on the nastiest back foot slider anyone has ever thrown. And let’s not talk about Lincecum and his less than 2 WAR average over ten yrs.

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 5:27 pm

Yeah, that’s a pretty weird claim. Bullpen guys just aren’t going to compile big WAR numbers. Timmy was only good for 4.5 years, a very strange career. I don’t think those examples invalidate the basic conclusions.

      • xoot said, on April 28, 2023 at 6:11 pm

The conclusions depend on his assumptions, so both are sloppy. He might’ve augmented the coarse average war number by factoring in AS selections or CYs. Or mvps. Or refining the war analysis to recognize excellent years. Clearly he discounted some high draftee accomplishment.

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 6:47 pm

Hmmm, that’s a total of 330 players. Unless there are a lot of other examples like Street, I don’t see how it changes the overall picture.

      • xoot said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:09 pm

He admits up front that under his method Street is a “bust.” A late first rounder RoY and AS twice later in his career with a 13 yr avg whip close to 1 was a “bust.” In other words, he warned us to take his bullshit for what it may be worth. I did. Lincecum was the first top tier draftee who came to mind. Grossly discounted by his coarse method. I’m not going to dig deeper to find the shooting stars who suffered bad luck injuries, etc His method was dull. He essentially tells us that the draft despite all the info is still a crapshoot. Wow. Who’da guessed.

  11. willedav said, on April 28, 2023 at 6:22 pm

Kings bench guys came to play tonight. Beating GS on boards too.

  12. Macdog said, on April 28, 2023 at 6:48 pm

It’s a little weird not having the Giants to watch/follow on a Friday night. Got the 2nd half coming up though, seems like Sac should be up more?

  13. Macdog said, on April 28, 2023 at 6:50 pm

Caught a little of Rangers-Yanks with deGrom pitching before — what a shock — he left in the 4th with an injury. Even got to see Bochy lumbering out to the mound.

  14. Macdog said, on April 28, 2023 at 7:13 pm

Awesome! Warriors get turnover on one of those idiotic roll the ball inbounds plays.

    • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 7:17 pm

One small victory for basketball during one horrible loss for the Ws.

      • Macdog said, on April 28, 2023 at 7:25 pm

Two straight Sac turnovers, Dubs coming back.

      • Macdog said, on April 28, 2023 at 7:29 pm

        Or maybe not.

  15. Macdog said, on April 28, 2023 at 7:49 pm

    We got a Game 7.

    • willedav said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:05 pm

Impressive road W for Kings. Without much from Sabonis too. Small ball worked just fine, right back at GS.

      • Macdog said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:09 pm

        Yeah, he was invisible.

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:23 pm

The Ws shot 37% at home and missed 11 free throws. That’s preposterous. No need to give the Kings too much credit. The Ws simply sucked.

  16. blade3colorado said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:02 pm

File this under the Indiana Jones “lost Ark” warehouse files . . . Per ESPN, “utility man Mauricio Dubon, who has started 21 games at second base because of the absence of Jose Altuve. All Dubon has done is hit .330/.355/.420 in the early going with 18 runs scored. He’s been hitting in Altuve’s usual leadoff spot since April 15, and during that span, he’s hit .313 with 11 runs scored in 11 games, all while pushing his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest in the majors this season and the longest by an Astros player since Michael Brantley in 2019.”

    Who knew?

    • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:20 pm

I think the Giants did, which is why they stuck with him for as long as they did, and why he was picked up by a similarly minded organization. A guy who can play SS and CF, and hit a little bit …. The only minor red flag in those numbers is the lack of BBs. We’ll see if he keeps it up.

      • zumiee said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:22 pm

Am I remembering correctly he made a lot of baserunning gaffes? He ran into a lot of outs?

      • unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:26 pm

        Yep.

      • James said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:27 pm

A lot is probably a half dozen times. It’s annoying, but not that relevant. Will Clark ran into 19 outs on the basepaths one year.

  17. unca_chuck said, on April 28, 2023 at 8:28 pm

Warriors with a monumental turd game. What a fucking joke. Gonna be hard to overcome this absolute shit show. 6 turnovers in the 1st quarter?

Kings got 23 points off turnovers. Oh well. Been a good run but this team looks old and slow. Unless they rediscover how to pass and shoot, we are done.

  18. James said, on April 28, 2023 at 9:02 pm

Flav prescient as usual at 9:15 am about Monk.

    • willedav said, on April 29, 2023 at 7:15 am

Looking at box, Monk outscored Warriors entire bench by himself. Big edge to Sac on boards and they made 7 more 3s in 13 more attempts. Plus minus in one game iffy stat, but warriors biggest loser was Klay at -28. that stat about how much better GS is with Curry on floor took beating too.

  20. xoot said, on April 28, 2023 at 10:08 pm

Young kings, fresh legs. Is it really that simple?

I read a sports column where the writer thought the 5:00 Pacific Time start to the basketball game yesterday took away some of the Warriors’ home court advantage. The arena took longer to fill up and it took the fans longer to get revved up.
