A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Huge Warrior Misstep

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 29, 2023

Seems like the Dubs were relying a little too much on “Championship DNA” to carry them through to the 2nd round. Man, that was ugly. Not sure how they bounce back from that.

Mexico City. ZZZZzzzzz. That do anything for ya? I’d just as soon we play the games here, this is a distraction and it’s unnecessary.

I was convinced that the short turnaround between Games 5&6 would give us a huge advantage playing on our home court, our championship DNA, and their youth. It was the exact opposite. Their youth and athleticism overcame everything else and it was the Dubs looked old, tired, and slow. Very nervous now about another short short turnaround for Game 7!!

Kerr I think has made a big mistake consistently not playing GP in big stretches because DiVicenzo can’t keep up defensively and Poole has been consistently god awful. Overplayed Curry and Klay and no minutes last two games from Kuminga and JaMychal l has been a ghost. We could be in big trouble.

Poole has to come off the bench and Dray starting.

As I’m sure everyone knows, Mexico City is built on the location of the Aztec capitol city.
There is some recent archaeological scholarship that suggests the Aztecs didn’t do all that human sacrifice that has become the accepted belief about the Aztecs. It may simply be propaganda the Spanish spread to justify their destruction of the Aztec empire. Interesting theory.

    • unca_chuck said, on April 29, 2023 at 10:33 am

No, the human sacrifice is well-documented by the Aztec history. Not as much as the Spaniards made it out to be, maybe but it was a thing.

    Poole 1/9 FROM 2!
my son..”Hell I could run out of control and throw the ball up to the rim and go 1/9…
    22 vs 23?
If you look at the core players, Curry great most nights, but occasionally just ok. Klay around 18ppg. Wiggs the same. Green 1 big outburst a few times only. The ONLY difference so far is Poole not hitting any shots. If he is good to very good ( 1 or 2 games at 30, most at 20 Dubs win most if not all their games. That was last year vs this year.

yaha! Was driving around Sunnyvale with friend of mine couple weeks ago went by the Fair Oaks place. We hit Kal’s BBQ on Mathilda right past Maude.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 29, 2023 at 12:01 pm

Mom and step dad live right off of Maude. Kal’s a “good value” breakfast favorite of mine with friends or family. I think they still serve 4 sausages or strips of bacon with most breakfast orders. Hobee’s on Ahwanee Ave., near Mathilda another favorite. Always see HS folks I grew up with there.

      • xoot said, on April 29, 2023 at 12:08 pm

That place on Fair Oaks is not for the squeamish.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 29, 2023 at 12:18 pm

Xoot, what is the “Fair Oaks Place?” Chavez Super Market? Ironically, there are 2 (apartment and condo) complexes called Fair Oaks Place on Fair Oaks Ave, if I recall correctly.

      • xoot said, on April 29, 2023 at 12:35 pm

Small taqueria in weird strip mall across el Camino from In-N-Out. The liquor store next door has to be a money laundering front. I first wandered into the taqueria late one Nov 1 night. Wild. Good pozole though. Not your lean niman ranch pork but tasty and lots of it. And otherwise muy tipica.

      • xoot said, on April 29, 2023 at 12:43 pm

Been told Mercado el Torre on Evelyn just off Fair Oaks has good pozole. I’ll try it when I get the chance. Sunnyvale seems to have many strip malls with two competing Mexican places beside each other. Must be some underlying tales.

      • willedav said, on April 29, 2023 at 1:02 pm

Blade, the taqueria Xoot’s talking about has funky parking set up, right near a 7/11 iirc. Usually park in other lot in front of cleaners/alteration shop. Just easier to get in/out of there. Good food though I haven’t been there in years.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 29, 2023 at 3:42 pm

Willie, same strip mall with Dominoes Pizza, right? Yeah, usually go across the street where Mexican supermarket is if too crowded.

  9. unca_chuck said, on April 29, 2023 at 10:31 am

Just thought it is odd Kuminga didn’t get any time out there. Wiggins was doing little, and Poole was a disaster. DiVincenzo and the bench did nothing.

“the human sacrifice is well-documented by the Aztec history”

The theory being put forth is that the Spanish forced the Aztecs to make drawings and writings “documenting” the sacrifices. The theory being the sacrifices may have happened a little bit, but no way near the amount believed.
One of the bases of the theory is that archaeologists haven’t found many skeletal remains that suggest burial areas of these sacrifices.

  12. zumiee said, on April 29, 2023 at 12:48 pm

I didn’t read much of this new theory. But I think the scholars were wondering where the rest of the skeletons were, besides the skulls. Europe stacked skulls, too, but they don’t get accused of human sacrifice. Some scholars believe skeletons of the dead in medieval Europe were often ground down and pulverized and turned into fertilizer, leaving the skulls to be stacked in catacombs or wherever. Burial space was an issue over the course of mellenia in many cultures.
I’m not saying I believe the new theory of a few Aztec scholars. I just thought it was interesting someone was challenging the accepted scholarly belief. It’ll stir things up a little at those academic conferences.

I did a search because I couldn’t recall it and it must be gone. Couldn’t even find historical photos. What about it Winder? I do recall the old Bob’s Big Boy. Mary Ave. has changed so much, e.g., I dated someone in High School who lived on one of the “flower farms” (green houses) that dotted Mary Ave. In fact, maybe a year before I joined the Air Force, I worked at one that was owned by a Japanese family, driving a truck, mostly back and forth between Sunnyvale and San Francisco Flower Market district/area (look up its history . . . goes back to the late 1800s). I digress though, Mary Ave., like most of Santa Clara county has totally changed, i.e., my family moved to Santa Clara in 1960 and was quickly being urbanized from a rural beginning. Sheesh, even back then, it was difficult to discern where Santa Clara, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, San Jose, etc., began and where these cities ended, insofar as boundaries.

    • Winder said, on April 29, 2023 at 4:04 pm

No it was plowed under in the late 70’s or early 80’s. It was a small operation two duplexes and 4 cabins. The reason I asked is that a lot of local guys lived there as I did for about 3+ years. I was hoping that you might have known people there, I am looking for 2 old friends and haven’t been able to connect. Thanks anyway.

  14. blade3colorado said, on April 29, 2023 at 1:04 pm

Xoot, I am going to eat at those places you mentioned. So many changes that I haven’t kept up with because I left Sunnyvale/Mountain View/Palo Alto area during my first marriage in 1989, when I got an OSH manager gig at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. Since then, only visits to visit my family, relatives and/or friends on the peninsula.

Guess the yard itself is new and host team has only played few games this season. per Slush MLB helped get the place built and did some tweaks there. Has synthetic field and mound was reworked too.

I read a sports column where the writer thought the 5:00 Pacific Time start to the basketball game yesterday took away some of the Warriors’ home court advantage. The arena took longer to fill up and it took the fans longer to get revved up.

  25. Flavor said, on April 29, 2023 at 3:54 pm

and Manaea striking out XB should be no excuse. Yeah, he got out of it. But he was in danger of blowing up the entire game and there’s no reason for it. The dude is obviously injured. We had an off day yesterday the bullpen is fine. Totally idiotic to even keep him in the game after that shot off his knee much less letting him go out for the 2nd inning

Been to Kathmandu (4,593′), Quito (9,350′), Mexico city (7350′), and Denver (5280′). Ironically, Mexico city was the most difficult to breath in (likely due to the pollution, particularly back then in the 80s). Quito zero issues, but that was due to being conditioned from living at 8250′ on the Colorado front range. Anyway, sort of expected this game would be worse then Coors.

    • xoot said, on April 29, 2023 at 7:24 pm

In 75, while I was living in Cuernavaca (5000 or so) friend (a Montana smoke jumper) and I decided to climb Popocatepetl (17,802). Easy enough, just a cone of ice. We rented axes and crampons in Mexico City and bussed to a settlement at the base of the ice cap. Spend a night, acclimate. The big hostel like lodge was full of locals chugging tequila and partying all night long. Next day, they easily reached the crater ahead of us. Completely acclimated.

Last 15-20 years El Popo has erupted frequently. No more parties, I suppose.

      • blade3colorado said, on April 29, 2023 at 7:54 pm

That is impressive Xoot. Congratulations on that feat. I have hiked/climbed 3 “14ers” in Colorado, all relatively easy ones. Not certain, but I think there are upwards of 55-60 14ers in Colorado, where quite a few Coloradans attempt to climb/hike all of them. Only other mountain of note I have climbed was Mt. Lassen (about a half dozen times), as I lived in the area for 7 years.

A friend, Mike, I knew in Colorado climbed Mount Kilimanjaro (19,340′) . . . back story for this guy was amazing, e.g., in his 20s, with barely a couple hundred dollars in his pocket, he managed to “hitch-hike” all over the Caribbean by taking deck hand jobs on a bunch of yachts. Spent an entire year doing that.

Anyway, related to Kilimanjaro, he joined 2 other guys he knew in New York, that wanted to climb Kilimanjaro and had planned this trip for months. My buddy drank quite a bit in those days, but despite this, he was in fairly good shape and athletic. These guys by contrast were dedicated athletes, teetotalers, one being a long distance runner (10K races and above mostly). So they climb to the top of Kilimanjaro and my buddy gets to the top and breaks open a six pack of beer, chugging (not sipping) a beer and offers one to each of his buddies. They both refused . . . He drank the rest of the six pack, just tripping on the other 2 guys puking their guts due to altitude sickness, which didn’t even faze Mike.

      • xoot said, on April 29, 2023 at 8:20 pm

Crazy mofo. That must be a serious climb. Popo’s number is impressive but the climb was easy. Years later, when it started spewing hot rocks and ash, people died. Apparently, a few got surprised right at the rim of the crater.

Those climbing stories make my chest feel even tighter. I didn’t catch COVID in Spain, but am sitting here with bronchitis courtesy of an asshole who literally coughed on us, mouth uncovered, for the duration of a meal in Granada. That feeling where you know you can’t even climb stairs without losing your breath … ugh.

    • blade3colorado said, on April 30, 2023 at 8:02 am

I have many relatives in Spain. I also have 2 American friends living in Granada. Approximately 10-11 years ago, while living on the Front Range of Colorado, they asked me about Panama, i.e., what it was like living there for 4-5 months in 2012 and using it as a “springboard” to explore the rest of Central America and South America? They were just entering retirement and had limited income (him Social Security and her, a small pension). In short, they wanted to maximize their income and I told them, “just my take, but if you move to Panama or any of the Central or South American countries, you’ll live like a queen and king on that type of income.” Fast forward a few months after a number of conversations I had with them, they moved to Panama. They parlayed that move into visiting all of Central and South America, as well as Europe . . . Fast forward 5 years later, they settled in Granada.

By the by, were you there for Semana Santa earlier this month? Get well James! Nursing a cold myself.
