A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Win And A Loss

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 3, 2023

Can Disco, Cobb and Webb get us to around .500 at the Break? That’s the key for me. If they can maybe Zaidi has a leash to do a few deals. That’s about the best we can hope for this year, I think.

Not sure where Dubs go from here. If they don’t have an answer for AD this is over.

Could the Lakers go smaller at center and try to make Davis guard somebody away from the key? But Looney’s been playing so well this season, it’s hard to sit him down.

      I mean “Warriors at center.”

I think playing Lamb a few also gives Looney rest and pulls AD out but maybe Fakers rest AD then as well.

Good grief, my phone is flipping out.
    Sorry about that.

I only got to watch the last 6 minutes in front of a tv after a concert to watch the 14-0 run that almost gave them a shot to pull off what likely would have been a historic comeback. After the Fakers won the first could see them not as rested and focused to win game two. Also think Kerr will now figure how to go more mid-range shooting to avoid the AD factor.

I’ve talked many times before how I would like to Kerr to call a critical time out and that was certainly the moment to have done so last night instead of seeing Poole with his bill advised bomb. I expected we would not have been ready for Game One and was expecting a loss and I have the Dubs winning in 7. So take care of business Game Two and I think we can split the two in LA making Game Five the must win. Again I did not watch yet the rest of the game but think obvious we need give others rest and play more Payton and why does Kerr not give Kuminga a run. I can see ask some upside to give Lamb some minutes to pop some outside shots and get AD out of the key.

Except GS was down 3 and they needed one to tie when Poole took that shot. If you call a timeout and sub in Lakers could have fouled anyone who got ball inside arc. Wasn’t great shot but Poole was wide open had time, and had his best game in while.

I’m surprised by lack of Kuminga minutes too, but JaMychael Green hit 2 3s when he was in there, and it was smaller lineup (without Loon who had hella game on boards) that fueled the comeback. GP2 didn’t do much; Kerr needed better shooters like DDV and Wiggins in there.

Problem was GS missed so many 2s, unlike them. Defense at rim by AD and others did them in. Klay Curry Poole combined 8-24 on 2s. When they win GS usually hits 55-60% of them. Oh and gifting Dennis Schroeder 10 FTs was silly.
Plus, at the end Coach Ham took J Vanderbilt out and put DLo back in, and he hit the game winning fadeaway J.
      More adjustments to follow.

Props to Bart for helping Doval with pitch clock BS before he finally K’d Alvarez. Didn’t understand what was up after they first met, then they still couldn’t get next pitch off. Flores and Estrada were on the field if you needed something translated right? wtf is so hard about this!

    • snarkk said, on May 3, 2023 at 10:38 am

Giants really have a catcher problem, IMO.
Bart is not that experienced, despite his age. Though, his D is coming around, good throws to second, and he’s starting to be less a K machine than before. Hitting now well above .250, but still no jacks. Sabol had less than 100 games in the minors actually working as a catcher — and it shows. IMO some of the pen problems are partly catcher problems. If I were a pitcher, I’d be hard pressed to trust Sabol defensively. Sabol should be a 3rd option, an outfielder who is the emergency catcher, not 1 of 2 counted on for regular C work…

  9. Macdog said, on May 3, 2023 at 11:23 am

The Alvarez single should not be a hit, Haniger should’ve caught it.

  10. Macdog said, on May 3, 2023 at 11:37 am

Now Wade with a Buckner-like gaffe for a 2-base error.

  11. unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2023 at 11:54 am

The playoff scheduling is weird as teams were getting 4 days off between games in the first round. And we get one day off between rounds. Whatevs.

Yeah, the Warriors missed a bunch of easy shot. 2s and 3s. And all those fouls drove me nuts. By the half I think it was 19-0 in free throws.

  12. xoot said, on May 3, 2023 at 12:53 pm

Once again it’s to the pen. Pretty good team on the field today, but for Villar. Giants pen is third worst in mlb in both era and whip. Fingers crossed.

Webb for the 8th? Why not.

Webb burned by long ball again, sigh.

Ha, a lead off walk, a wild pitch and we got through it. Doval was nasty with that last out

  21. Macdog said, on May 3, 2023 at 1:30 pm

    Series win over the champs!

  22. xoot said, on May 3, 2023 at 1:38 pm

Funny postgame interview with Bart. They asked directly for an explanation of what happened last night and he completely ignored the question.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 3, 2023 at 2:10 pm

      What happened last night?

      • willedav said, on May 3, 2023 at 2:13 pm

He had to call time for mound visit twice because Doval was about to have pitch clock vio. One of them would have been ball 4 and brought tying run to plate. but Doval K’d Alvarez to end game.

      • snarkk said, on May 3, 2023 at 2:24 pm

Doval should have adjusted to the pitch clock by now.
        He may have a $1mm arm and a $1 game/situational awareness.
He needs to balance those two out, and his catchers and coaches need to help him get there…

      • xoot said, on May 3, 2023 at 2:27 pm

Something odd happened last night. Bart normally has no trouble communicating with Doval and Doval’s timing on the clock has improved since that opening NYY series. Flemm dryly noted at the start of the 9th today that the Giants still had three mound visits remaining.

  23. willedav said, on May 3, 2023 at 2:18 pm

Bart crushed a mistake today, had 2 hits and scored a run. 2 games in a row the SP has dominated Stros and Giants have beaten WS Champs with him behind the plate after rough start to road trip. Kap challenged him to take the job over and I think he’s getting there. Bailey is in Sac, heir apparent back up with solid D rep and Sabol as done some things with the bat at least.

  24. snarkk said, on May 3, 2023 at 2:22 pm

Bart with a coupla hits today. Sneaking that BA up to .302 and OPS to .747.
Go Joey. Really want this guy to succeed; lots of raw talent…

    What’s with the announcers?
Are Miller, Kruk and Kuip now unofficial part timers?
Are they grooming Flemm and Lopez to take over the #1 team? I can’t see Ritzo and ding dong Santangelo being full time.
I think Estes isn’t interested in a FT gig, he made too much money and has a nice life in AZ. But, he’s good if he can keep from running on and on with analysis…

    • xoot said, on May 3, 2023 at 2:58 pm

I think Miller just does radio on the road; he adds a few innings of tv at home. If Miller doesn’t make the trip, I guess it’s fill ins. I think I saw a tv shot of him at the radio mic in Mexico. KnK don’t travel, apparently. I still think Hunter Pence has a good shot at one of the KnK spots when they quit altogether.

Oh shoot, just saw this: 24 yr old apprentice Jockey Mauro Cedillo is in intensive care (with movement in legs) on ventilator in Cleveland Ohio after being thrown from mount who stumbled in first race at Thistledown Monday. Cedillo apparently was trampled by trailing horse.
Cousin of Santa Anita/Del Mar rider Abel Cedillo.

Just watching the replay of the game, and JD Davis is pretty damn good at 3rd base.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 3, 2023 at 10:04 pm

Yeah, he’s pretty much claimed 3rd as his own, which is great, even after it seemed Villar was sort of anointed to take 3rd out of spring training. Davis has delivered. I must say, I was leary of Wade being a good 1st bagger, but he’s also more or less claimed it except for some matchup switching with Wilmer et al….
