A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Derrrrrrrby Day

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 6, 2023

Solid win vs Brew Crew.

Bigger and more important things happening today in Kentucky. Aye?

I’m excited about this Derby as I see it as one of the most competitive one we’ve seen in years. Forte will probably go favored and he could certainly win but I don’t see him faster than at least 7 or 8 others.

Corn on Cobb Day.

Shit. Forte scratched. That sucks I was excited to beat him today.

  2. willedav said, on May 6, 2023 at 7:21 am

Does the horse just need a break to recover, or is it something to do with track conditions?
Cool to see Christina Blacker all decked out there yesterday.

he’s got a bruise. Scratched out of an abundance of caution.

Yet another crusher for people with live futures bets and everybody with a live Oaks-Derby double ticket…

    • Flavor said, on May 6, 2023 at 7:49 am

i got a live Oaks/Derby double ticky but it wasn’t with Forte

  4. Flavor said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:12 am

Willie Mays turns 92 today, that’s pretty incredible

  5. willedav said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:32 am

Some of Mays SF Giants teammates still around too–Marichal and Cepeda are 85, Felipe 87.

    • Winder said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:45 am

That is amazing. Soon enough the Giants of my generation will all be gone. Mays just might outlast me.

  6. mrsprtdude said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:23 am

Maybe Manea not trying to throw 95-96 with his new found “extra velocity” is a smart move.

    • James said, on May 6, 2023 at 10:39 am

Seemed like getting his breaking pitches in a good spot helped a lot. Locating the fastball farther up, in and above the zone, would complement nicely. He wasn’t doing that even with the reduced velocity. Still, an encouraging outing. He might have gone 6+ with better defense. He just needs to throw a lot of innings with a league average ERA. That’s why he was signed.

    • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 10:45 am

I remember Matt Cain shaving a couple mph off his young hotshot FB circa early 2010 and gaining command. His bb/9 and whip plunged and he had his best years. But that coincided with his maturity as a knowledgeable pitcher and with the rise of other great pitchers on the staff, relieving pressure on him. Manea’s sudden velo surge was odd and while he’s obviously a seasoned pitcher, so much tinkering seems more desperate than promising. Hope I’m wrong.

      • James said, on May 6, 2023 at 1:23 pm

If the fallback is something like what he’s been, experimenting seems worthwhile to me. The extra velocity, if it’s something he can sustain, would potentially be the difference between an average pitcher and one who stood out. The gap between 93 and 96 in BA against is pretty big. He wasn’t at the higher velocity yesterday, yet he still wasn’t really commanding the zone with the fastball, either, at least to my eye.

I looked up Cain on Fangraphs. He was at 93 average velocity his first three years, then settled into a steady 92 over most of his career.

      • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 2:07 pm

I looked up Cain on fg too. I think we’ve been thru this avg velo debate before. Fact is, he methodically settled down and gained command. Manea’s surge in velo and dip last night has no such reassuring rhythm. He threw mostly off speed stuff last night either because he couldn’t control the fb or because he knew that with the lower velo he had to keep it unhittable, or a mix of both. I
like him but in the long run I think both he and stripling will be busts.

      • James said, on May 6, 2023 at 3:19 pm

One thing to be clear on: I assume when a pitcher gains velocity later in his career, it’s not that he’s simply maxing out his effort and throwing the ball as hard as he can to achieve the extra MPH. Presumably there’s been some other adjustment that accounts for the uptick.

So far one smart move by the Giants is limiting field appearances for Wilmer who will usually pull a hammy after extended work.Just keep DH’s some PH’s for sure and some occasional play at 1st only. He’s so clutch they need to keep him healthy,I would say Mr.Ed should be the betting favorite today.

  8. blade3colorado said, on May 6, 2023 at 12:43 pm

What’s your guys take on Kuip’s brother? This is what I heard, “We had a phenomenal day today. Negro league museum. And Arthur Bryant’s Barbeque.” Yeah, I can see how a lot of people might have heard the “N word” because he said it so fast, but for the life of me, I did not see intent on his part to disparage. I like the guy and I can see where discipline might be forthcoming, but I hope the A’s do not fire him.

    • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 2:37 pm

I thought it sounded like the n word very definitely. Bizarre gaffe by a guy who probably never says that word. Of course, who has often used the word negro in speech the past forty years? I hope a bunch of Black A’s players and former players jump in on his side.

In todays cancel culture he’s toast.

  10. djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 2:55 pm

Could it just be an accent thing?
A few years ago some guy got in trouble for pronouncing “retired” as “retard” a few times.
    Southern accent I think…

    • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 3:02 pm

Glen doesn’t make mistakes like his brother Duane. Nothing comparable to Morris for Morse or Penis Bobblehead for Peanuts.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 6, 2023 at 3:14 pm

FWIW, I knew a girl that dated Glen Kuiper years ago and said he was an asshole.

Then again, she was a bit of a hairdo herself.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 6, 2023 at 3:23 pm

He doesn’t have an accent. Funny thing is, they taped that before the game I think. Why wouldn’t they catch that then?

      • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 3:27 pm

Someone else told me the bit was pre recorded. I don’t know if that’s true. Kuiper or Braden or someone else involved should’ve said CUT. Do over. Makes me think it was live.

    • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 3:41 pm

Here’s a start. Little less forceful from Stewart, a local network A’s commentator, than I would’ve expected.

  11. xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 2:59 pm

“Nearly half of the horses in Saturday’s Derby have Secretariat in their bloodlines.” NYT writer today. That’s amazing to me, even tho I’ve read a bit about horse breeding

    Fucking Warriors aren’t even trying.

  35. Macdog said, on May 6, 2023 at 7:42 pm

    The Warriors look dreadful.

  36. James said, on May 6, 2023 at 7:50 pm

This is at least two games’ worth of awfulness from the Warriors. They’ll probably win on Monday.

  37. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 7:51 pm

I see Mage ran past Two Phils to win it. Years ago when I’d visit the family on holidays, my brother and I would seek opportunities to sneak out for a puff or two of weed to ease the proceedings. Had to speak in code, we called weed Phil, not sure why. “Hey, time to go see Phil?” One time my actual Uncle Phil was visiting too. Bro says “Time to go see Phil?” and my Mom says, “Phil is right here, where are you going?” Ah, having Two Phils complicated the situation. Here’s to Two Phils.

    • djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:52 pm

      More 70’s greatness:
Our supervisor in the “cage” on Wall Street would dispense amphetamines to his staff of late teens early 20’s kids during busy times. The brilliant “code” question everyone would ask in the days leading up to it was “did that UPS package come in yet?”

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:57 pm

        Ah yes, “the package”…

      • djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:00 pm

But the funny thing was that we were waiting for “ups” which was the blanket term for speed, dexis, greenies, blackbirds, etc. Any moron could see through our stupid code…

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:03 pm

        Haha, I didn’t even catch that…. 🙂

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:04 pm

        Makes me a moron!

      • djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:09 pm

        Don’t be hard on yourself.
It was only stupidly obvious 47 years ago to our crew…

  38. alleykat69 said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:20 pm

Never thought I would say I’m more excited about the Giants then the Warriors..

  39. unca_chuck said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:30 pm

Warriors pulling an Alternate Davis. When they stop giving a shit, it’s easy to turn it off.

Still and all, the free throw discrepancy is a joke. Game 1 they shot 54 3s so I get why the Dubs didn’t get to the line much. This game per usual Steph gets clobbered into the seats a few times, no calls. AD gets 3 calls on one possession. And his fucking act is so pathetic. He and Lady Bird have to realize at some point that acting like a 140 lb 6th grader isn’t a good look if you are 6’9″ 260, or 6’11, 275.

  40. djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:54 pm

Let it be known that I hit the Kentucky Derby today for the first time since 1991…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 8:57 pm

Excellent! Long time coming. Big payout?

      • djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:02 pm

Definitely didn’t get me close to even for the last 32 derbies.
Just nice to cash a ticket which of course is no longer really a ticket…

      • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:05 pm

Cashing that ticket is indeed a fun pleasure. If not a ticket now, what do you cash in? I guess it’s online. I’m so out of it…

  41. djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:12 pm

    Everything is I guess.
I don’t think paper/cardboard tickets to games even exist anymore.
    Not here anyway…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:27 pm

What if someone doesn’t have a smart phone? I was a very early adopter of the internet/email, but a late adopter with smart phones. I’d see people checking in to flights using their phone, and there I am trying to get a paper boarding pass. That’s when I knew I was on the downhill…

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:28 pm

I guess there’s no such thing anymore of anyone not having a smart phone…

      • djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:38 pm

I only got one a couple years ago.
I think Covid sped up the conversion to a “touchless/cashless” world at sporting venues…

    • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:33 pm

Does the cage still exist in WStreet?

      • djloo27 said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:35 pm

Honestly don’t know, Xoot but I would guess maybe in some very limited form it might…

      • xoot said, on May 6, 2023 at 9:38 pm

Similar sort of change I guess

I think he’s just kind of coming into his own. There’s a reason he was the No. 2 overall pick. He’s one of the most talented baseball players I’ve probably ever met and played with. It just takes some time sometimes. I stunk when I first came up. It’s a process, and he sticks with it. He’s one of the most hard-working guys I’ve ever met. I’m excited for him and excited to see where it keeps going.”

I am a little shocked after these first two games that the Brewers were 18-13 coming into the series. They seem as very mediocre as the Cards were. Mets Braves Flodgers Padres seem to be the four dominant NL teams and we’ll see how the good the Flodgers really are.
