Sweeeeeeeeppppppp
I caught the end of that game on the radio. Dotel obviously on fumes pitching 3 straight days. But you know what? He got it done. And as much as we like to complain about him (and complain in general) he’s got 11 saves, 3rd in the majors.
Sweeping Philly is a legit accomplishment.
Desperately needed day off today.
Just when I’m ready to throw the team in the garbage, they sweep a solid Phillies team. And pass the Pads for 3rd place.
Just dump the toxic twins and I’ll be happy.
My thoughts exactly.
One of the preseason arguments was that Giants don’t have talent to hang with likes of Dogs and Padres and would be fighting for 3rd/4th with AZ.
Well look where Pads are right now, superstar contracts be damned. They mortgaged farm in trades, spent ton of money on long term deals and have major holes across at least 3 positions on the field (C 1b CF) with little bench depth. Hitting NL worst .226, 14th runs 13 for slugging/OPS.
Closed door player meeting yesterday after losing home series to Royals. Fans no happy.
It’s early yet. But as usual, the offseason big spenders are struggling. Rodon may not pitch, Judge has already missed games, and Correa is off to to slow start.
Then again, so are Haniger and Conforto. Although Conforto is coming around.
Yeah, I think if you get high priced talent you have to build around them with players that are hungry and young players that get the whole team thing. If you build an all-star type team, like the Pads and Mets, it seems you just get a bunch of guys trying to out stat each other. On paper, shouldn’t the Angels be champs every year?
When Zaidi came on board, besides having an older team, we had a glaring hole in CF and we still do. The Dodgers got Mookie Betts for a song and I still feel that could have really changed the dynamics of the Giants going forward. Zaidi was asleep at the wheel there, IMO.
I will say Zaidi has done exactly what he said he’d do, build around the older players, try to beef up the Farm and keep the Giants competitive late in the season. I don’t recall him ever saying he was trying to build a championship team.
Feel the same way about Josh Bell. An easy get that would have been relatively cheap.
You weren’t a Kevin Pillar fan?
Not really. His defense was flashy yet fair to poor. He’d make the great catches but fluff the easy ones. Miss the hitting tho.
Yeah definitely lots of griping going on again with the Padres u thought my of ended with Melvin’s hiring but he seems just as baffled as the 260m underachieving club. They left a shitload of runners on yesterday and couldn’t get a key hit, and then Soto on 3rd in the 8th Chapman throws a pitch over the head of the hitter, Soto tries to score but the ball bounced straight back to the catcher and Soto was out by 10 ft! Keep Sucking the Banana 🍌 out of the tailpipe SD I love it!!
Looking at the stats there no way I would want Bell over Wade.Wade is killing it getting on base with on base percentage around.440,7 bombs and a ton of walks. Bell batting .226 with only 3HR’s in 173 AB’s.LaBelt is crushing his stats and is like #3 in all of baseball getting on with his keen knowledge of the strike zone like Belt use to have..
Yeah, it’s early. I will say Wade has surprised me defensively. He’s actually handling it well. Bell’s a switch hitter and I think he’d have fit right in.
Wade Jr is playing better than Cronenworth (who was better value when he 2b but still not as good as Estrada), whom Padres signed for 7 yrs/$80 mil. Josh Bell is hitting .226 with 3 HRs for Cleveland, at $16.5 mil. He was fail for Padres after coming over in trade, and hit .192 with 3 HRs in 50 games for them. I can see why they weren’t interested, but to pay all that $$ for 10 years of Machado and Bogaerts and not fill in around them hasn’t worked out.
Bogaerts btw had hot April but is hitting .208 in May with 0 HRs.
I owe Wade an apology.
He’s been real solid…
Yesterday I noted that Danny Emmerman was full of shit. Here’s some data:
The Giants are hitting 239 with RISP. To raise that to the league average of 254, they would have had to produce 5 more hits in “situations.” They might have delivered another 2-3 hits with the additional opportunities the 5 hits provided.
If the Giants had simply produced 20 more hits overall, say with 40 total bases, their OPS would be 778, in the range of the Diamondbacks and Dodgers. Some of those 20 hits — how about 5? — would obviously be randomly distributed in “situations.”
you could say the same thing about the Dbacks and Dodgers. What if they had produced 20 more hits? It’s still early that I’m not burying their chances but I’m also not gonna hope for hits that didn’t happen to up the OPS. Unless you want to start a new stat: FOPS (yes, F is for Fake)
Ha, the hypothetical is purely to counter the bullshit in the article I mentioned yesterday. If the dudes having good years hold steady, and the rest raise their stats out of negative WAR territory, the OPS and run production will climb. Doesn’t seem impossible, but they’ll need some good luck on the injury front, too.
I didn’t look at the article. Guy sounds worthless. He seemed addled by the high team HR total.
Ah, he’s ok, I just get a little exercised by illogical assertions over “situational”hitting. Baggarly was at it today.
I lent my copy of Sadie Plants’ history of the Situationists to someone many years ago and never got it back. Those Routledge books are so fucking expensive now.
What would the situationists make of the meta verse? Surely they wouldn’t surrender. remember coming across Debord.
Regarding Mookie Betts, the Red Sox wanted a prospect in the trade who could be an immediate starter, and the Dodgers had that with Verdugo. He’s been a solid starter for the Red Sox. He hasn’t hit as many HRs as they would have liked, but his on-base numbers are good.
The Giants didn’t have anyone like that to offer the Red Sox.
LA also held on to Betts with a 400+ million dollar contract extension. Would Betts have been a good bet to extend with the 2020 version of the Giants, if they’d traded for him?
obviously we’d be better but at too much of a cost. I feel the same way about Harper and Judge btw
The Dick had similar stats to Verdugo, so I think we could have matched up. Hell, I think Yaz alone could have made that trade happen.
My point is CF has been a hole since Zaidi came over and still is (yes James, except for Pillar. Not sure why they didn’t resign him).
Would feel so much better about this team if either of Farhan’s FA pick ups (Stripless and (Nota)Manaea would be worth a damn this year…..
Ok gents I am off to get ready to go see the Sister Hazel show. Liking Sister Hazel is by far and away the whitest middle age man thing I do lqtm
Oh man I’m so jealous BF, I didn’t know they were still touring?I love Sister Hazel I have many of they’re CD’s ,Champagne High,All for you,Feel it,Your Winter and so many more great stuff!Enjoy the Show 🎤 🎸🥁
We finally have some good young players. Our offense is not the issue. Bullpen overuse by starters never going past 5 innings. AND bullpen guys expected to be good that have been awful. Alexander will get better. Maybe the Pads saw something in Rogers (the new one) and passed for a reason??
Fill the striplin manea hole with 1 really good reliever via a trade and we make the playoffs
opps not WITH but AND
Cards rang up 6 hits/6 earned off Urias and led Dogs 9-2 before error by Golds with 2 out opened flood gates and Freeman hit grand slam to cut lead to 9-7.
Urias ERA now 4.39, not numbers you want to have in contract year. Current salary $14 mil.
Saw some minors news: Harrison had rough outing where he only last 3 innings and gave up 5 runs/2 bombs and 3 more walks in 3.1 innings. He’s walked 27 guys vs. 47 Ks in 26 innings, only given up 17 hits. Bailey homered in that game, at Reno (elevation 4500 ft).
Z seems fine with Harrison per MCC site, just wants him to cut down walks. Patience, grasshopper.
Richmond won as Luciano homered and doubled 2-5 drove in 4 and leadoff LF Ismael Munguia went 3-5 with HR, now batting .291 with .784 OPS. Richmond won 11-4.
5 run 8th as Cards add on vs. Dogs pen, ahead 14-8.
We just muddle along pretty much unnoticed…
Shit, all we gotta do is hang around the north side of .500 till the deadline and we’ll be fine.
A great night,The Dogpile gets blown out and the Fakers lose too! Eat it LA teams!!
Re: the lede.
Dotel ? …
Baggarly with a good Z interview in the Athletic. I like that he asks about the lack of roster diversity, but I was amused to see him leave out Wilmer on his list of Latin players (Estrada, Doval). Maybe that Friends-developed English suggested Flores no longer counts. The Giants also did have Perez on the roster before the injury.
That did generate more comments than most of rest of the Q/A topics and was good to hear interplay btw. those 2. Notice more Latin guys on lower minors, Arteaga etc.
Z also talked about reliever Ryan Walker, who came up along with Bailey as Bart placed on IL.
Solano was always fan favorite, Donnie barrels.
I went back to look who’s played CF for SF since 2000. Benard, Murray, Ellison, Grissom, Finley, Rowand . . . Torres’ ADD-fueled 2010 gave way to Pagan’s nice 3 year run, but then we’re back to Denard Span. Given the not so subby-subtext of Brian “I love my Human Beings” Sabean’s glorious reign vs. Robot Zaidi’s fraudulence, I’d say let’s see how Matos fares next year.
Forgot Shinjo!
Blanco played a lot of CF iirc. He caught the deep fly ball to save Cains perfecto.
He made the nearly disastrous error in LCF , game 7 2014
Exactly, there was a hole in CF that needed to be filled when Zaidi came on board, so he went from Pillar and then grave dug his way through Slater, Tachman, Brinson, Fairchild and Johnson but also had to use out of position players from Dubon, Bryant, Yaz, Gonzalez, digging all the way down to Wisely.
I hope you won’t be rooting against Matos since he was part of Sabean’s 2018 International signings.
The “hole” you’re so critical of now existed for most of Sabean’s tenure. I’m sure there will always be a deficiency to point to over what I hope is the next 10 years of the Z man’s rule.
Why would I root against Matos? Heck, Sabean drafted Brandon Belt and Fred Lewis!
I was rooting for Matos last year when he was in some affiliate in Oregon (Eugene?) and face planting . . . Everyone, but Winder I think disliked him. Anyway, I am all for him John. Been watching the kid since he was signed by Sabes.
Lofton
Loved that guy, even though his numbers weren’t actually that great for SF. There are probably a few other fun fact CFers in the less than 300 AB range.
Memorable Sabean move to get him when he did.
It was early Burrellesque.
Good one. The earlier wild ass trade for those three WSox pitchers sort of hinted at his bent. But I always think of Lofton when I see Shinjo’s name.
Giants call up Patrick Bailey to replace Bart. I guess we’ll see if the kids are all right.
I’m looking forward to new players! Didn’t even know Bart was hurt again he sure has had a frustrating year.Bailey was tearing it up, first at AA, promoted to AAA and held his own. He’s the best defensive catcher, frames well& has a bazooka arm. Let’s see how the bat plays out, as a Switch Hitter he’s better against RH pitchers then LH pitchers so I guess we’ll wait and see how that plays out.
Ryan Walker RH reliever with a deceptive funky delivery was playing great at Sac, 20 innings pitched 9 hits allowed only 2 runs allowed WHIP an impressive.089! So yeah excited to see him pitch, couldn’t be any worse then Highway to Hjelle I hope..
I think it’s Bart’s 10-58 streak in his last 20 games. 4 RBI, .172.
He’s not hurt. he’s sucking wind.
It’s a torn slugging %, lowest of all the starters. Takes a while to heal; sometimes never does.
Jim Brown dead at 87…

Oh shit. One of my favorite persons (forget football, albeit, I think he is the BEST ever to play the game). RIP Jim . . .
one of my early football heroes. Hank Greenwald talked about his exploits in various sports, lettering in football lacrosse basketball and track, at Syracuse in his great bio.
Damn. Very sorry to hear that.
That sucks..Jim Brown was “The Man” he just destroyed any football player in his way! Loved him Dirty Dozen as well..Like Blade said pound for pound the best of alltime ..RIP Jim ..
AK, at his prime (essentially the ENTIRE TIME HE PLAYED IN COLLEGE AND NFL), he could play today or 10 years into the future. He was the prototype football running back. No one could hold a candle to him – then or now.
Brown allegedly did quite a bit of damage at the Playboy Mansion as well…
Brown was fun to watch he hurt people when he ran. I think he’s was probably the best RB I have ever seen.
Bart seems snakebit.
He was starting to get his batting eye, then popped his groin.
They probably brought him back too soon, and he popped it again.
If Bailey comes up and impresses, Bart could be destined for another club…
Sam’s Club, maybe.
1. LaMonte Wade Jr. (L) 1B
2. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
3. J.D. Davis (R) DH
4. Michael Conforto (L) RF
5. Mitch Haniger (R) LF
6. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
7. Casey Schmitt (R) 3B
8. Blake Sabol (L) C
9. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
P: Anthony DeSclafani
How does this guy have an ERA of nearly 5?
Crawford looked like he’s ready to announce a mid-season retirement on that AB.
Crawford just looked about as overmatched as humanely possible…
Haniger with the big hit.
Just don’t load the bases…
Taking the lead.
Schmitty!
Hilarious that they threw Schmitt a strike there. Awesome.
Crawford unretires…
I have to say the Rook and not Schmitt are Bailey but Sabol with a real bad rookie move last inning after he K’d u can clearly see his right arm sleeve that said twice Sabol,Sabol on it,Cmon Man !!!
Victory!
Bailey looks great behind the plate. His reactions to foul balls are quick and accurate, he instantly knows where they’re headed –unlike Joey when he came up. And Bailey seemed to handle Tyler’s weird stuff with ease. His arm comes well recommended. We’ll see. But if he can hit at all ….
I thought he looked good too.
Just hate when the catcher drops the target before the pitcher throws…
It’s part of the new approach. Maybe show then drop before the batter can catch a side eye glimpse? I don’t know. Htf you supposed to throw through the target if it ain’t there?
Right Xoot.
It defeats its own purpose (as Jake Lamotta said to his wife over cooking his steak)
That was a good game to watch.
It was interesting to me how loud the crowd got during the argument with the umpires.
People still get into that, especially when it’s animated…
Explanation for argument I read was Marlins said Davis wasn’t engaged with pitcher so Stallings had right to call timeout to go to the mound, which ump said he did illegally. so they called the vio on Stallings for Ball 4.
Giants are playing well enough to draw crowds without superstars. And yeah those that are there seem to be having helluva good time.
I just realized who Schmitt reminds me of a bit with his swing, especially when he doesn’t look good: Hunter Pence.
Desperite #2 seed vs #8 seed goes from 5:15 to .49 seconds left and sores 2 points!! Has a team come back after losing 1st 2 games at home? Epic fail by the Celtics! GO GIANTS!!
Nice save by Rogers with Doval unavailable!
DeSclafani line doesn’t look great, but of the 23 batters he faced the ones not named Luis Arraez only got 2 hits/2 walks off him. Man that guy is revelation to watch hit.
GGF horse in the Preakness?
I guess Chase the Chaos is no Hoof Hearted.
