Shake It Off
Expected a dud on get-a-way day and it delivered with a thud. We will be doing our typical opener bullshit today in Milwaukee though it appears that Webb is to follow because of his back? What’s an inning or two of an opener gonna do for Webb’s back?
I still play wordle every day and love it. 5-6 minutes max? I got the time.
Hey, speaking of Milwaukee (because that’s where the Kuiper’s are from) what’s everyone’s take on Glen Kuiper being fired for his use of the N word during a game a couple of weeks ago? I watched that clip several times and he clearly just fumbled his words into the worst possible word he could possibly say in the situation. I supported him getting fired because you just can’t have that happen. But let’s not forget that he went to the museum in the first place to honor the players there and to learn more about it. And he was clearly trying to say something positive about the experience of the museum.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say I feel bad for him cause I’ve always thought he was a pretty underwhelming announcer and he won’t be missed. But that word doesn’t come out of your mouth by accident. Although this was clearly an accident.
Thoughts?
Kuiper did the same thing in 2020. It’s on youtube.
He did but it wasn’t as pronounced and obvious. At least that how I remember it. This one was the actual word no questions about it
No one who has trouble enunciating the long vowels in the word negro should be a professional announcer anywhere, but especially not in baseball. Duane has an unfortunate underlying accent driven impediment too. Remember LFer “Morris”? Or the inability to sound the t in peanuts as he repeatedly praised the bobblehead on the radio? Beat writers tweeted about during the game. Hilarious, but not fatally offensive.
Brewers 15-9 at home plus 20 run differential, despite being minus 2 overall with 27-22 record.
Giants beat Burnes and Ray in SF when Brewers were in worst stretch of season, 6 game losing streak they snapped by beating Stripling.
Can’t think of anything positive to say about A’s or G Kuiper.
Has anyone in the business come out and publicly defended him?
Dave Stewart has.
The head of the Negro Leagues Museum did, too.
I grew up in a household where the N word was tossed around every once in awhile. I spent most of my early years about 3 blocks from East Palo Alto and you heard the word all the time. But, it wasn’t right then and it isn’t now no matter how you feel.
Every NL West team lost yesterday.
Braves salvaged last game of 3 at home with late rally for walk off W, Padres SP gave up 4 early as Nats beat them, AZ lost Gallen start in 10 as Phils rallied with 2 HR by Turner to tie game 2 outs in 9th.
Brewer shut out Astros for second day in a row.
Yeah, I always thought it was a trip driving down Middlefield Road in Redwood City. Going from auto body shops and 100 taquerias to Atherton and their $4 million houses. Friend of mine lived on Linden Dr near Bill Walsh down there. Said he used to see him mowing his lawn every once in a while.
I always find it funny when a Negro calls a Negro a Ni***er and that’s cool to them, but if it comes out of a white man’s mouth it’s all racist ,riots, and beatings coming up.
I wanted Glen Kuiper axed as well u can’t be going with a live mic 🎤 saying shit like that without paying the consequences. If he needs to go on a rant, it’s only behind closed doors at his home.
I see where Duane is taking the high road and making no comment on his brother, which is smart being in the broadcast business with the Giants for like 40 years with his good pal Krukow and not about to make any waves as he rides off in the sunset with Krukow together..
Well, it would be like me calling your mama a drunken whore as opposed to you calling your mama a drunken whore.
Even as a joke, family can say things about each other that others can’t. Kinda the same thing.
slush in online sporting green this AM said Webb will start on weekend, behind Wood tomorrow and ahead of Cobb on Sunday.
Thank you for sharing that Craig. Preface by saying my mom passed away 2 Mondays ago at the age of 88 . . . My cousin said, “Your mom was a force of nature.” She raised 2 rebellious sons as a single parent on a waitress’s salary until she went back to school in the 80s and then worked at NASA. I always thought I would end up taking care of her in her “old age.” Wrong. Despite losing one of her sons to drugs, my mom perservered. My mom got married again (40 something years they were married) and I think the last 20, both of them were retired, where they averaged going on at least 2 and sometimes 3 cruises annually. I think my mom has been to more countries than I have, perhaps as many as 50.
I digress though . . . I still vividly remember being 4 years old living in San Francisco and visiting my uncle Frank’s home on Christmas Day. His family lived on Shafter Ave., Hunter’s Point. That Christmas day – my brother Mike and I, along with some cousins, were playing outside with some black kids, having a blast. Just being kids. I don’t recall the reason, but my uncle came out with a shotgun and told the black kids to go away. That’s when my mom suddenly appeared and read my uncle Frank the “riot act.” Man, my mom was pissed and cussed up a storm, telling my uncle to never, ever do what he did again. My uncle apologized and sheepishly went back into the house. Mom then asked the children to come over to the stoop. They sat down on the steps on each side of my mom; and my cousins, along with my brother and I sat on the other steps. Just chatting and laughing. Along with a lot of other wonderful times and memories with mom, this particular memory of her I will always cherish.
Sorry to hear that, Blade. She sounds like a real firecracker. My mom was much the same. Fiercely protective and a true Jack Kennedy Irish Catholic progressive Democrat.
When I got thrown out of Catholic school she defended me to the end. I had been cutting for a month before the school decided to call my mom. The school was like Hitler Youth camp. My knuckles still hurt from all the whacking with yardsticks.
Your mom was an amazing woman Blade sorry for your loss!RIP 🙏
Good for her giving Uncle Mike the deserving riot act dress down.
It was really good to get those kids back on the porch as they were probably upset about what happened as well.. Moms will always be the best, I still miss mine and think of her everyday, and when she died ironically on May on Mother’s Day in 2014, my Father only lasted 3 more months till August, basically from a broken heart 💔 yeah 2014 was a terrible year for me and my sister, and yet they lived a long life,She was 88 and my Dad 90! 65 years of marriage their was plenty of memories I can still think of and talk to my sister about the good times we all had…
My sincere condolences, blade.
Great story on your mother.
As for Glen Kuiper, I saw the tape, he seemed to me to just have fumbled that one, for whatever reason. I have no clue about what’s in his head, and whether that was a horrendous slip of the tongue trying to say Negro in the context of the museum, or he uses the slur in private and it just came out at the wrong time. I suspect the former, given he’s been around so long and nothing like this happened before, as far as I know. If the former, I would have suspended him for a couple of weeks, and then he comes back. Maybe the A’s wanted to dump him anyway, and this was their chance. This isn’t the usual case where a guy is caught unawares on a hot mike saying some vile crap that reveals who he really is in private, then he apologizes and lies saying “that’s not really who I am”. What he should have done is immediately say after he blurted the slur that he misspoke and apologized for it. Waiting even the few hours was not a good move…
Thank you everyone . . . I am friends with many of the Flappers here on Facebook, where I posted mom’s passing the day after Mother’s Day (AK, mom may have died that evening on Mother’s Day too, as your mom did. Not certain, because my stepdad, Dennis, didn’t discover her passing until the next morning, on Monday). Mom battled lung cancer for a year and a half. She stopped smoking over 25 years ago, but it still got her. I am so grateful she is no longer in pain.
In any event, again, I want to thank all of you on Facebook that posted condolences. Much appreciated.
For most announcers saying a racial slur with a hot mic is a career killer. This happened to Reds play by play guy Thom Brenneman( back in 2020) who thought the mic 🎤 was off but nooo he blurted out homophobic ( between innings)remark about in KC :Great the Fucking capital world to play at..He’s never came back from that, and I expect that will happen to Glen Kuiper. It would be hard for any organization too take a chance on these 2,no matter how much apologizing they do their will always be doubts in the public eye..
Andy Reid and J Harbaugh weighing on latest NFL rule change that just about wipes out KO returns.
Used to be one of more exciting plays in the game, and guys like Noland Smith Travis Williams Alvin Haymond and others were fun to watch. NY Giants had speedster DB Clarence Childs that had 100 yd TD for them early 60s.
iirc when Gale Sayers scored his 6 TDs vs. Niners in rain, one was on punt return. Who would do that today, put top running back on special teams?
Lol maybe announcers are just dumb?
Take it for what it’s worth, but we were at a party at our neighbor’s house in San Carlos (this was late 90s), and her sister said she and Glenn Kuiper dated for a while. At some point she told him that she had dated a black guy previous to him. Turns out it was Keith Henderson, a guy on the 49ers for 5 minutes back in the day. She was a pretty hard partier and said that the Niners back then were wild. But she said that Kuiper told her “I don’t date chicks that date black guys” and he dumped her on the spot.
Hmmm, interesting tidbit.
I’ve heard Kuip on KNBR a couple of times when given the chance to talk about his brother’s situation. He basically said it’s a difficult time for the family and he politely refuses to say anything else. Though in his most recent statement, it seems like he’s saying some of the folks he deals with regularly are pretty pissed off at his brother, at him, or both. Why they’d be PO’d at Kuip for what his brother did is a bit of head scratcher to me, unless there’s something historical we don’t know about; but anyway here is what Kuip said this past Tuesday about his brother’s firing, per KNBR podcast:
“Well I mean, look, it’s a tough period right now for Glen and for all of us, the whole family,” Kuip told Murph & Mac on KNBR. “If I want to salvage any kind of relationship for some of the people I work with and for, it would probably be a good idea if I kept my mouth shut.
“And I’m not talking about the Giants, who I’m thankful for every day. This is a special organization, and I’m thankful that I’ve been a part of it since 1982.
“It’s just a tough time right now, and we’ll get through it.”
Yeah that hearsay sounds real reliable. Maybe the excited utterance exception would apply if he blew his top, threw things around, and screamed the words.
Jimmy G back under the knife…
https://www.knbr.com/2023/05/25/jimmy-garoppolo-had-foot-surgery-after-signing-with-raiders-report/
Even though the Raiduhs knew he needed surgery, they nonetheless signed him with $45 million guaranteed. That’s Crazy…
It’s probably gonna be a long year for him. I know Davante Adams isn’t to happy with the situation. I think the only year he didn’t miss time was 2019.
Late Night Wade with another great 2 out hit knocking in Schmitt who stole a base to set up the run!
After Conforto’s hit, that AB by Davis is a contender for worst of the year so far.
Jimmy g once again waits way too long to get the surgery?
I wonder how close Schmitt is to the record for longest streak of PAs without a walk to start a career.
Conforto bomb!
Break out the bomberooski
Clutch hit that.
Schmittt happens!
Schmitty!
Bailey ribbie!
Wow what a BLAST 💥 by Conforto !! 7 HR’s in his last 14 games and let’s throw in 2 Doubles and 15 RBI’s as well! yeah he’s on fire 🔥 now if they can EVER get Haniger going, he’s always 0-2 in counts which never helps that would be great sometime very soon..
And the rook Schmitt does it again with a 2 run double, screw walks for Schmitt their overrated when you can produce RBI’s instead..
Ballgame!!!
Victory in Milwaukee!
Ends Brewers 2 game winning streak.
Bullpen games may be underrated.
Great Victory!! Clutch hits, 4 SB’s, defense solid tonight.Conforto seriously on 🔥 and the Bullpen game was exceptional!
I’m not betting on Casey to beat this:

Back when your SS didn’t have to hit.
CLINT!!!
